Yes, the list is really slow lately. Not even much off topic stuff.

Been driving my old car a bit this week as I am running out of time.
I always pull the plates a the end of Oct and put it up for the winter
before the weather gets really cold.
Have hardly driven it this summer. Not really sure why. Drove it to the
lake in late May and filled it with fuel when I got back.
Only something like 282 miles since then. I filled it again on Sunday
and noted the number of miles. I don't think I have filled it in between.
Diesel is more expensive than gasoline here now. All summer it was the
other way around but regular is now $1.149 per liter and diesel is $1.269.

Cost $68.16 to go that 282 miles this summer.
Some years I have driven it 3K miles but the last 2 summers have been
pretty sparse. Last year I had no front seats for half the year as I
took them in to be repaired and the shop had them forever.
This year, I had a bit of a mess in my garage and that made it more
difficult to move the car in and out.

It is annoying how diesel has been consistently more expensive that
unleaded. Premium is $3.30 and diesel is $3.65 right now here in AZ.
Sometimes when I read you guy posts about putting cars up for the winter,
putting on snow tires, getting out storm windows and storm doors, or i read
the obligatory winter oil thread I miss not living where there are seasons.
As the winter trudges on, however, AZ reminds me why I live here.

Yes, I think I can appreciate why you might like to be in AZ for the winter.
A lot of folks around here have bought places down there in the last few
years after the price of houses declined.

I tell myself that I need to embrace winter since I live here where it
gets cold but it is hard to convince myself.
It was easier when I was younger. I used to have snowmobiles etc but
have mostly lost interest in that sort of thing.
I think the short days and the cold conspire to make me lazy. Maybe
nature's way of helping us preserve ourselves?

I could work in my warm basement on winter evenings but I rarely do.

I sometimes wish I had a big heated garage to work in but I have to
doubt how much I might use it.

One of my projects is the ressurection of an old Lund.
It is a 20 footer with a Mercruiser I/O.
The hull is aluminum but all of the wooden parts are rotten and falling
apart. It needs new floors and consoles etc.
I wish I had somewhere to work on it over the winter so I could have it
ready to go come spring.

That might prompt me to get doing more in the evenings this winter.

Unfortunately, I have collected so many tools and so much stuff that I
hardly have room to work in my basement now.

I am in a 2 storey house too and as such do not have a really big basement.
It is however, nice to have some place to do things in the dead of
winter. Pretty difficult to do much outside here when it is really cold.
I have cut up sheets of plywood into smaller pieces (so that I could
trim them and work with them in the basement) outside when it was more
than 20 below C.

I have a double garage but it too is pretty full and does not leave much
room to work. I have insulated the walls mostly and put in a new
insulated door but have yet to do the ceiling and so if I try to heat
it, all of the heat rises into the attic and melts the snow on the roof.
I have done things like changing a thermostat when it was minus 30 C but
I am getting old and smart. I wouldn't do that anymore. My younger son
is a mechanic and has an arrangement with his girl's uncle to use his
big heated shop. If I needed something in the dead of winter I would get
my son to do it for me.

My favorite long time hobby is woodworking, and with a basement I could have a
full time shop set up.

When we were back in Indianapolis I had a full blown shop with all the tools I
needed and really nice amenities, such as a dust collection system. I could go
down there and putter with the lathe or get serious and build a complete
bedroom set, which I have done for each of my boys as a graduation gift.

I also had a really good source for hardwood lumber there, so when the wife saw
a piece of furniture she liked I could pretty well turn out a duplicate with
minimal effort.

I miss woodworking. No possibility for it down here unless I would give up the
garage, and that's not going to happen, not to mention it would barely be
adequate as far as space.

Sigh.

I have done a fair amount of woodworking over the years too.
I also have some projects that have been waiting for me for a long while.
One is a grandfather clock (grandmother maybe as it is not huge - Shaker
style). I bought the works and the plan for it about 30 years ago and
have not built it yet.
I hope the works are ok as the warranty is long since expired and it has
never been run. Probably have to clean and oil it.
Had a clock repair man we used for the old mantle clock for a long while
but not sure if he is still alive and working. Clock has not needed him
in a while.

today. Heater did not want to kick in this morning so our day started
cold, but a light hit with the flashlight and the main gas valve
opened and the boiler fired up. Let's hope it is running fine, or
maybe a main gas valve replacement is in our DIY home work.

And, now... on to off-topic: Why is the gov't subsidizing the insco

odd in a free market - or maybe this isn't a free market?

Being younger? - yep, but you really don't want to be an old codger in
AZ for the winter. That does not work for me, no matter how I argue
to myself.

A warm place to work seems nice. Reminds me of maker space? i.e. a

Full size grandfather clock with German movement was built out of cherry for
our 10th wedding anniversary. I have often thought I should have a clock guy
come by and service it, but in the 23 years we have had it the thing runs great
and has rarely required regulation. I'm sure it needs some lubrication, but I
am not about to mess with it.

I learned how to do fluted columns on a lathe for this. Most of the rest of the
case work was pretty straightforward. The stile and rail parts that are arched
were tough, but I learned a lot from doing them (more than once!)

When we were in Indy and the economy was going down the tubes, I took advantage
and scrounged up a lot of really nice woodworking equipment. When it was all
said and done, I spent under $2k for:

13 DeWalt surface planer and stand
36 Delta wood lathe
Atlas 3/4 shaper with a set of 8 cutters
10 DeWalt radial arm saw
10 Craftsman table saw with a 2HP magnetic start motor and Biesemeyer fence
Atlas 6 belt sander with stand
6 Craftsman jointer/planer
Delta 2HP dust collector with bags

I'm sure there was more, but suffice to say I was a wild man on Craigslist. I
spent less to get more than I had ever had in the way of machinery in the past.
I was in woodworking heaven.

But - had to get rid of everything when we moved back here. No place to put or
keep it, not to mention the expense of moving it.

It sure was great while it lasted, though,

Unfortunately, I have collected so many tools and so much stuff that I
hardly have room to work in my basement now.
I am in a 2 storey house too and as such do not have a really big
 basement.
It is however, nice to have some place to do things in the dead of
winter. Pretty difficult to do much outside here when it is really cold.
I have cut up sheets of plywood into smaller pieces (so that I could
trim them and work with them in the basement) outside when it was more than
 20 below C.

I have a double garage but it too is pretty full and does not leave much
room to work. I have insulated the walls mostly and put in a new insulated
door but have yet to do the ceiling and so if I try to heat it, all of the
heat rises into the attic and melts the snow on the roof. I have done
things like changing a thermostat when it was minus 30 C but I am getting
old and smart. I wouldn't do that anymore. My younger son is a mechanic and
has an arrangement with his girl's uncle to use his big heated shop. If I
needed something in the dead of winter I would get my son to do it for me.

When Mom first gave the clock to me in '64, we lived in a house with no

bushings/bearings have had to be changed in order to keep it running.
It was my wife's grandparents clock so probably over a 100 years old
now. It is a Seth Thomas.
I also recall my grandfather would take their old clock and oil it
periodically.

sure it needs some lubrication, but I am not about to mess with it.

I learned how to do fluted columns on a lathe for this. Most of the
rest of the case work was pretty straightforward. The stile and rail
parts that are arched were tough, but I learned a lot from doing them
(more than once!)

When we were in Indy and the economy was going down the tubes, I took
advantage and scrounged up a lot of really nice woodworking equipment.
When it was all said and done, I spent under $2k for:

13 DeWalt surface planer and stand
36 Delta wood lathe
Atlas 3/4 shaper with a set of 8 cutters
10 DeWalt radial arm saw
10 Craftsman table saw with a 2HP magnetic start motor and Biesemeyer
fence

Atlas 6 belt sander with stand
6 Craftsman jointer/planer
Delta 2HP dust collector with bags

I'm sure there was more, but suffice to say I was a wild man on
Craigslist. I spent less to get more than I had ever had in the way of
machinery in the past. I was in woodworking heaven.

But - had to get rid of everything when we moved back here. No place to
put or keep it, not to mention the expense of moving it.

It sure was great while it lasted, though,

get serious and build a complete bedroom set, which I have done for
each of my boys as a graduation gift.

I also had a really good source for hardwood lumber there, so when
the wife saw a piece of furniture she liked I could pretty well turn
out a duplicate with minimal effort.

I miss woodworking. No possibility for it down here unless I would
give up the garage, and that's not going to happen, not to mention it
would barely be adequate as far as space.

Sigh.

I have done a fair amount of woodworking over the years too.
I also have some projects that have been waiting for me for a long
while.
One is a grandfather clock (grandmother maybe as it is not huge -
Shaker style). I bought the works and the plan for it about 30 years
ago and have not built it yet.
I hope the works are ok as the warranty is long since expired and it
has never been run. Probably have to clean and oil it.
Had a clock repair man we used for the old mantle clock for a long
while but not sure if he is still alive and working. Clock has not
needed him in a while.
