SNIP The question is how? Abolishing the US Depart of Education would be a good start. Agree. Common Core; would be a great idea if the focus was re-training the teachers on the basic principles of the foundation of USA instead of socialist indoctrination of all children. We have, through lack of action by Citizens, allowed US Department of Education to produce an entire generation of uneducated and for all practical purposes unemployable youth. College graduates are currently the highest unemployed [per capita for their category] in the entire country. Per capita, USA spends more per student than any other country, and has for 40 years running... Worldwide, USA ranks far below first in student performance.. so more money is not the answer. Example: The immigration law firm I'm part of is in need of 6 law clerks. To date, we have taken over 300 applications. These applications are submitted by college graduates. The applications are so full of spelling and syntax errors I have taken to the practice of marking them with red pencil and returning them with comments [some quite to the point]. These are people who have paid for college education, and still can not spell or demonstrate use of basic communication skills in a professional environment. Sadly, it becomes my duty to damage their self esteem, it seems I'm the first in their young lives to tell them they fail. Abysmal hardly says enough. 12 years of public or private school, 4 years of law school, $200,000 in student loans and Would you like fries with that order? is the apex of their work talent. Somewhere, those teaching and those setting the standards for teaching need their self esteem re-adjusted. Token Mercedes Content: All my Mercedes are working as designed, perfectly. Re: [MBZ] Battery charger bright sparks - W123 300TD
If the glow plug relay is stuck it will continue to send electrons to the glow plugs even when the car is off. While running the alternator might sorta keep up with the battery drain but when you shut the car off it will drain down the battery fast. This is what happened to the SD the daughter unit has, she got a new battery and it died too, a shop replaced the alternator and some other stuff and it was still having the same problem, I told them to check the relay and sho nuff that was the problem. Easy enough to see if the glow plugs are staying hot after the 30sec or whatever (or even without glowing -- put a finger on one, quickly!), or to put an ammeter on it and see if the relay is drawing current even after the glow period, or when the car is shut off. --R On 4/2/14 12:45 PM, Andrew Strasfogel wrote: How would the GP relay drain the battery but not start the car? there is also a hiring bias that guarantees you will not get qualified candidates. a lot of those people asking if you'd like fries with their order could do the job you are looking to get done, but they can't get hired as people are risk averse and would rather hire someone they know can't do the job who looks better on paper (say someone with previous experience at the job) who they know can't do the job than someone who actually might be able to do it. it's really as much about how organizations work as it is about the education system. the talent is there but it often cannot connect with those who wish to buy it on account of this ideology i like to bet very young race dogs who are moving up in class on this principle that the dog is actually by far the best dog at this level and you'll never have a chance at this level again to make money on it. most wish to have a dog prove themselves inept at a class level before supporting them. the latter is where most organizations are at i'd tell you a story that illustrates this point, but i gotta go take a girl to lunch instead On Wed, Apr 2, 2014 at 11:04 AM, G Mann g2ma...@gmail.com wrote: SNIP The question is how? [MBZ] Bluetooth Radio Noise
I have a Bluetooth adapter that connects via line-in to the radio in the van. It charges via USB. The audio is fine when it is not plugged in to the van power; however, if the USB cable is plugged in when running, I get static-y, whiny noise. To make this a little more interesting, I also have an external battery pack. The other day I connected it to the Bluetooth adapter, and if the external pack was connected to the car power I got the static - if it was not, no static. Because of this I think my adapter is okay, and I am suspicious that there is some AC coming off the ground from the lighter socket. Can I just run a capacitor or two across the fuse in the power connector to filter? Any suggestions on appropriate capacitance? Anything else I should consider? Re: [MBZ] OT - Say it ain't so...
I take your points in good order. However, in our case, the persons hired to do the job required, will be responsible for case prep in often complicated immigration law cases. The documents prepared must be exacting in content, form and presentation. Lead Attorneys practice before federal courts including the Supreme Court of the United States. To turn in something that is less than letter perfect would reflect poorly on the defendants case and the firm. Thus, a requirement for attention to detail is part of the published job description. The applicants are fully advised of this in advance of submitting their written applications. If it were only a small percentage who had slight spelling errors perhaps it could be explained as that individuals error in attention to detail, however, the percentage of errors is much higher. Thus, my resort to the red pen edit as I review them. Further, this is not an entry level pay position. The expectation of professional standards is part of the job. Either education is lacking, or we simply have breed a society of slackers, apparently, who have never been held to a standard of business. In either case, correction is necessary for society to function as we have come to appreciate it. Re: [MBZ] '87300SDL vibration
Once while looking at the Hunter Roadforce tire balancing website, specifically the page listing shops near me with that equipment, I noticed that some shops also offered vehicle vibration analysis and remediation. This is the type of shop you need. A sensor is attached to the car to measure the exact frequency and vehicle-speed relationship, and your vehicle info is plugged into their database, and the machine tells the mechanic which component(s) to test further. It looked pretty slick, pure FM if it works. -- Max Dillon Charleston, SC Original Message From: Ralph Robertson rare...@gmail.com Sent: April 2, 2014 3:39:46 PM EDT To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Subject: [MBZ] '87300SDL vibration Have tired everything to locate vibration, would a garage that had a dynamometer be able to duplicate the vibration and locate where it is coming from? Re: [MBZ] OT - Say it ain't so...
Not so much any more. The school district I worked for just got tenure dumped, at least for new teachers or teachers who have not yet gotten their professional educator's license (you get this after your third consecutive year of teaching in FL, which was effectively when you became tenured.) The teacher's union was even on board with the whole thing. As for County government, I have only been there since January and have seen two people get the boot. And these were Civil Service employees, too, not probationary like me. There seems to be little sympathy for those who don't pull their weight from what I can see, and managers have no problem writing people up and documenting their inadequacies or poor performance when necessary. At least where I am, government jobs are getting much tougher to get, and are by no means a guarantee of lifetime employment. I think a lot of this has to do with having to get lean and mean when the economy was in the dumper and tax revenues dried up a few years back. I know we're just starting to recover where I am, and it's getting a lot tougher to get a government job and they're being pretty picky about hiring unless they can justify the need. [MBZ] Walmart: How big is it?
1. At Wal-Mart, Americans spend $36,000,000 every hour of every day. 2. This works out to $20,928 profit every minute! 3. Wal-Mart will sell more from January 1 to St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) than Target sells all year. 4. Wal-Mart is bigger than Home Depot + Kroger + Target + Sears + Costco + K-Mart combined. 5. Wal-Mart employs 1.6 million people and is the largest private employer, and most can't speak English. 6. Wal-Mart is the largest company in the history of the world. 7. Wal-Mart now sells more food than Kroger Safeway combined, keep in mind they did this in only 15 years. 8. During this same period, 31 Supermarket chains sought bankruptcy. 9. Wal-Mart now sells more food than any other store in the world. 10. Wal-Mart has approx 3,900 stores in the USA of which 1,906 are Super Centers ; this is 1,000 more than it had 5 years ago. 11. This year, 7.2 billion different purchasing experiences will occur At a Wal-Mart store. (Earth's population is approximately 6.5 billion.) 12. 90% of all Americans live within 15 miles of a Wal-Mart. 13. The value of product for Wal-Mart passing through the port of San Diego each year is a larger sum than 93% of ALL countries Gross National Product (GNP) ... and that is only ONE port- ...one way that’show Wal-Mart gets it's stuff. 14. Of the 1.6 million employees, only 1.2% make a living above the poverty level. 15. Wal-Mart's head office is located and centralized in Bentonville . Due to this fact, there are more millionaires per square mile there than any place on Earth. 16. The official U.S. Government position is that Wal-Mart's prices are no lower than anyone else's when compared to a typical families weekly purchases. That's the view of the statisticians at the Bureau Of Labor Statistics (BLS) responsible for calculating the Consumer Price Index (CPI). 17. 92% of everything Wal-Mart sells, comes from China . Another 4% comes from Chinese owned companies in the U . S . Or in 3rd world Countries. 18. Wal-Mart and MOST large companies, take out life insurance on it's employees, without their knowing. If an employee dies, ALL the insurance moneys go to the companies. I.e. An employee making $18,000 per year, dies, and the company might make as much as $1 million. Most often these moneys, coming from what is commonly referred to as Dead Peasant Life Insurance Policies, is paid out to executives as bonuses. (A common practice, unknown by the average consumer). 19. Wal-Mart now averages a profit (not sales) of $36 billion per year. [MBZ] Britain mimicking America, (or America mimicking Britain?)
Hey, Gove - leave them teachers alone! Back in the 1980s, Pink Floyd’s ‘Another Brick in The Wall’ summed up the frustrations of a generation of young people in Thatcher’s Britain – bullied and fed through a mincer of rote-learning, millions were thrown on the scrapheap of the dole queue. Fast forward three decades, and it’s Thatcher-2, the horror sequel. Today it’s PM David Cameron’s hit-man, Education Minister Michael Gove, who’s the classroom bully, and teachers and school students alike who are being force-fed through the mincer. But teachers are hitting back, and have staged a series of national strikes in their two-year battle against the Con-Dem government. In the latest strike, on March 26, a walkout by the 300,000 members of the National Union of Teachers – the most radical of the teachers’ unions – brought thousands of schools to a full or partial standstill in an effort to get Gove back to the negotiating table for realistic talks about the massive attacks on education and teachers he is trying to ram through. Thousands of teachers staged a lively march in central London, where they explained their reasons for striking https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wWC56ZaSm0 and their rejection of Gove’s rote-learning proposals. In particular, teachers are protesting ever-lengthening working hours. Surveys show that primary school teachers are working an average of 60 hours a week and secondary school teachers 56 hours a week. These are forced upon them by ever-increasing amounts of form-filling, reports and testing, rather than classroom teaching. Teachers say that making them work these hours, while the government is proposing to make them work until 68 before they qualify for pensions (up from 65 years currently), is hurting educators and students alike. They are also vehemently against the introduction later this year of performance-related pay – a corrosive system that will pit teachers from the same school against each other, undermining the principle of collective teamwork by teachers and other school staff. Through these so-called /‘reforms’/, Cameron, Gove Co. are determined to force down teachers’ wages and conditions, as part of the Con-Dem government’s austerity measures aimed at shifting the burden of the economic crisis away from the bankers and big businesses that caused it, and on to the shoulders of already hard-hit ordinary working people and their families. The attacks on teachers’ pay and conditions are also part of Gove’s crusade to churn out a new generation of school-leavers drilled by soulless, dumbed-down and part-privatized education. His eventual goal appears to be to turn schools from centers of genuine learning into privatized exam factories, where young people leaving school will be fed into low-paid jobs on zero-hours contracts – all to feed the insatiable appetite for profits by Cameron, Osborne, Gove and Co.’s friends in big business. In response to those who say that teachers’ strikes http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-26749899 are hurting children’s education, NUT General Secretary Christine Blower points out it’s the other way around – it’s the government attacks on the teaching profession that are harming children’s learning. Sir Michael Wilshaw, the chief schools inspector, has described as a /“national scandal http://www.theguardian.com/education/2014/jan/15/ofsted-chief-teachers-quitting-scandal”/ the situation where two out of every five teachers that come into the profession are leaving within five years – a terrible indictment, and a sign that education needs a massive increase in funding, not the massive cuts being callously carried out by Gove. Then there are Gove’s experiments with privatizing education. The introduction of academies and so-called ‘free’ schools, which are being separately funded by Cameron’s government outside of local councils’ control, and with the involvement of private companies – regardless of whether such schools are wanted or needed by local communities. Meanwhile, conventional state schools are suffering from a lack of funding, shortages of places for children and growing class sizes. /“Under new legislation, teachers will not have to be qualified,”/ says Blower, the NUT leader. /“Free schools are opening in areas where they aren’t needed. But local authorities are not allowed to open schools where there is a schools places crisis.”/ The mood on the striking teachers’ demonstrations last week was one of increasing anger and frustration – and of feeling that now is the time to take a stand against Gove and Cameron, before it is too late. Typical of the teachers’ feelings were those expressed by Lee Coombs, a Buckinghamshire teacher on the march in Oxford http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-26758697, who told the BBC: /“The main reason I’m leaving and the main reason I’m on strike today is that teaching is no longer the journey of
