Re: [MBZ] S124 Hatch latch.
Friend used to think he had to help me get my scooter in and out of trunk/boot of my 124. 'Seems he couldn't wait to slam it closed. 'Took a while for 'im to heed my instructions to please let me do it all by myself, and "please don't slam the lid on my hand." Then I would smoothly and easily lower the lid and merely lower it quietly and smoothly and press it gently for the last clear "click" of the latch - no slamming necessary. SWMBO can't get it straight, either - slams it every time she closes it, and every time, I say, "Oh!" But she still doesn't "'get" it. Bomb bay doors on B-52's operate very fast via 3000 psi hydraulic pressure, but they don't slam violently for the last very short distance before latching; movement to the latch is fast, but the latching itself is much slower and firmer - they don't slam fully closed. Also if someone slams the rear door shut whilst you're sitting in the car, it is not a pleasant feeling. I try to educate my dear family that there is no need for banging down the door, they do it gently once or twice and then it's bang bang again until I drop a valve again, it's a vicious circle. Perhaps if you had owned an S124, you would understand that the system is not unnecessary. Did the bomb bay doors on the B-52's shut gently or did they slam shut and shake the plane? As far as what the problem with them may be, could be the micro switch that tells the motor to start motoring and suck in the door. The door will still shut but maybe only into stage 1 but don't worry you can drive these things with the rear door open and you won't even notice it, well Fay didn't. Also I wonder why they did not extend this system to the other doors, I know the 140 had them but then they abandoned that after the 140, did they not? On a semi related note, I was watching an ep of the mythbusters yesterday, one of the myths was that a big sound system could break all the windows. So they grabbed an old 126 SD and built a giant speaker into it, which was actuated via a linkage from the back of the gearbox, so it would move up and down. The expectation was that the sound pressure would pop out/break one of the windows but it was the sunroof which gave out first and released the pressure. The funny thing was that the other myth being tested was that driving a car faster over a rough road would make the ride smoother, they used a cutlass for that and I thought to myself, if they used the 126 for the smooth ride and the cutlass for the sound thingy, things may well have been different. Actually I started yesterday evening but I am counting those hours. No big surprises except the air passages on each side of the evap were difficult to break loose. Also, it took a while to become comfortable working with stuff I have never worked on before. I found the directions from Wilton and PeachParts forum to be very helpful but a few things have changed since the 87 they used as an example. Not hugely different from my 91 W124, but enough to make it interesting. I came in to take a rest and research the details of pulling the HVAC box from the dash to minimize the problems. Thanks again to those who took the time and effort to put their experience in writing - it was/is _*very *_helpful! I think I broke a couple of the clips that hold parts into the dash but those are minor problems. You "make ChowdaQ happen". Left to my own devices I'd sit around all day and drink coffee. Somebody needs to direct as it were and you're it. Be glad that all it takes is renting the space and expecting me to show up. :) Speaking of motivation, my 20th high school reunion is this year. I've been battling my weight for a long time now (down 20# since 2001, I'm not rushing it :) ) and decided this is as good a time as ever to crack the 200# barrier. I've managed to keep myself around (mostly just over) 205# for a year, I've drifted as low as 204. I remember getting my first hunting license and being at 205 so it was a good mental milestone. 200 is a nice round number and cracking it should let me wear 34" pants comfortably. The reunion is in August so I've got plenty of time. This week I've been working on cutting back snacks and getting more motion. I've gone for 3 "runs" which are really more like "lumbering jog/walks" but I'll take what I can get. Buster isn't pleased with the runs, he prefers a leisurely stroll/sniff... -Curt Date: Fri, 2 May 2014 15:47:28 -0400 From: Dwight Giles To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] MBCA Thoughts Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Curt, maybe you can make us some chowdahQ decals. Yeah, the Seattle section was overly heavy on the social stuff for a number of years due to a lack of somebody with a tech interest. Re: [MBZ] Now you can't get R107 Tumblers
The Saga continues. DBAG no longer makes the ignition lock, just the tumbler and key. W116 and W107 are S.O.L. if you need one from the factory. Chinese now manu-fake a replacement that can be sourced for under $200, but not from the dealer. I ordered the tumbler and coded key at the dealer. They have no idea when the dark elves from the Black Forest will be able to forge it from their mighty smithies. In the meanwhile, I had hoped to get a locksmith to pick the lock or jigger it so I could get the tumbler free. The locksmith said they send Mercedes to my indy for lock jobs. So, I gave them a call. Instead of the $1500 to drill out the part, the indy will do it all for $300 labor and they even found a NOS ignition lock body in NorCal. I just may be able to drive before the end of the season. clay On Apr 26, 2014, at 3:43 PM, M. I tried this approach some years back when I first arrived in the area. I was met with so much resistance despite Scott's assistance and encouragement that I tossed in the towel and left. The membership of the local section was so heavily engaged in having social events and had no interest whatsoever in car related activities, or for that matter, tech related things to the point where they considered my efforts a threat. Re: [MBZ] MBCA Thoughts
That's one of the reasons I never got that involved with my chapter. For the most part it was a social club for dinner gatherings and nothing else. Scott Suits, our area director and a great guy, really worked hard to get things going, but if there are one or two car related things going on in a year that's a lot. I can't say that I have ever seen them do a tech session. Add to this that everything is centered around the dealer in St. Pete, which is a logistical issue as it's a tough place to get to and not at all centralized for the area. An hour's drive for me one way. If they would use MB of Tampa it would be more centrally located and they would probably have a better turnout, I would think. Last year the only car related event I know of was an "auto cross" (and I use that term loosely) where they started in St. Pete at a Panera's and ended up in Holiday at a German restaurant. I think seven or eight cars participated. Dan Sent from my iPad > On May 2, 2014, at 7:52 AM, Jaime Kopchinski wrote: > > I think its sad that a car club hosts so few car events. Yeah I really wish more mainstream and regular car events such as cars and coffee would become a reality. These long drawn out drives to fancy places require too much planning and take too much time and are too infrequent. I think its sad that a car club hosts so few car events. The Northern NJ section does the June Jamboree, which is pretty nice. You can bring any level of car, walk around, talk about cars... you know, car club stuff. But its a big production. But most of the other events are of no interest to me. I'd like to begin lobbying for more car-centric events. There are loads of old Mercedes around here... there must be some interest. Sunday morning cars and coffee seems like a worthwhile activity.
