Re: [MBZ] Dr. Fats's belts
Seriously, this kinda perplexed me. I tightened up the alternator a coupla months ago as the belts seemed a bit loose. Then this past week they started squeaking a lot so I look at them and both the alternator and PSP belts are fairly loose. Tightening stuff up is not a problem, but it made me wonder if the warm weather had them expand enough to do that. Other than that it would be the alt and PSP moving, but those are tightened down so that probably is not the cause, but who knows. --R On 5/17/14 12:49 AM, Gary Hurst wrote: i think it's been like 17 years since i've been messing with selling parts and you are the absolutely first person who has found continental belts to be a problem. Re: [MBZ] Dr. Fats's belts
Check the bearings in the alternator - if it drags much it will eat belts. Had that problem with my old 220D, couldn't keep belts in it, and the issue was bearing so bad in the alternator that the armature was dragging. Rebuild fixed it right up. A bent or damaged crank pulley will do the same thing, too. I have been dreaming up building a trailer out of a w114. It would have been a great addition to Gump, but no place to build or keep it. It would also be a good carrier project with Frosch. Actually, it's made from a mid-to-late '30's Ford pickup cargo bed. Haven't been able to pin down exact year. Bed is a heavy gauge steel (much heavier than modern). I replaced axle, springs and wheels about 15 years ago. I also added tri star and MB wheel covers then; they make it a great conversation piece. Its paint is beginning to be a bit embarrassing; for 35 years, I've painted it the color of the tow vehicle of the time: bronze in '79 to match top of '74 Plymouth van, blue in '89 for '87 Dodge Caravan, red in '96 for '95 Dodge Caravan, ivory in '04 for '81 300D and red (burgandy) again for interior and stripe on outside of '87 300D. Started to paint it white to match the '87 300D, but it sits outside in the weather and under trees all the time, and I thought white on it would look too grungy too fast - the ivory didn't work out very well for that - so I painted it same as the 124 interior. Some places in the red are flaking/spalling and beginning to show spots of the old colors. [MBZ] Cloudy Day
Spring has sprung a little, in Seattle. Getting the ignition to work allowed me to move the car so I could wash it. It had been living outside because I could not get it driven into the garage. Bird poop, pollen, leaves, acid rain, squirrel piss. And the hard top was stowed for the winter, because I was only taking the car to club events. Friday was a warm, cloudy day. Perfect to prep the car for summer. Clean the snot off the top and boar brush it away. Then, wash, clay, polish, and seal the paint. I had to use a 10/1 water/peroxide solution to cut the moss growing in the window brushes. Might need a moss kill solution. Took a break for lunch and fluids. Back outside to wax and apply 303 protectant to the top. Car looks lovely now. Re: [MBZ] Sunny Day
Spent most of today with my '95 E300. First up was rotating the tires. As each came off, I cleaned inside wheel and out with Sonax Full Effect wheel cleaner. Really great stuff for cutting through brake dust, works like nothing else I've tried. Spray on dry wheel, it goes on green, work in with brush, turns purple as it dissolves the brake dust, let sit for a couple minutes, work over again with the brush, spray off with hose. I've had Bridgestone Potenza Pole Position tires on the car for about 30k miles, they are holding up well. Rotated them once at 10k miles, today was 20k miles later, but not much difference in wear between front and rear. All those new suspension bits and a good alignment must help some. Later I fixed the inside trim covering the B-pillar. The clip at the top had broken free from the plastic trim. I cut and chiseled a small piece of wood to fit inside the plastic trim over the broken hole, so it would hold the metal clip in place when screwed to the plastic trim. Works very well. Some on-line store, a couple years ago. Fifteen bucks for a bottle, pricey, but worth it. Amazon? Don't remember. One bottle will only clean 8 or 12 wheels, fewer if one cleans the inside of the wheel as well. My first purchase was a sample kit, also included car shampoo, dash cleaner, wax, washer fluid additive. I liked the washer fluid additive, shampoo, and dash cleaner, and the whole package price wasn't too much more than just the wheel cleaner. Should have taken a picture.
