Just prior to their decent into Beaufort, Rankin heard a series
of very loud grinding noises coming from his single engine jet.
This caused a severe loss in power, the fire indication light to
illuminate and the entire instrument panel to darken. Fearing a
power failure, he pulled the auxiliary deployment power handle,
only to have it break off in his hand. After repeated failures to
restart the engine, the F-8 Crusader entered a rapid descent at
near super-sonic speeds. Having lost complete control of his
aircraft, Lt Colonel Rankin determined his aircraft was
unrecoverable and had but one option left; eject.

 - Grinding noises from engine
 - Loss of power and instruments
 - Not able to use auxiliary power (RATG, most likely)
 - Entering rapid descent without control

If the plane had broken up, he would not have been able to eject.

Not sure in your neck of the woods but here they have introduced a fee
on both the final price and shipping, supposedly to get rid of the
sellers who sell cheap but charge a lot for shipping.
However ebay have also partnered with Aussie Post, so you can get a
shipping label via ebay for a discount. This would be handy for items
that can be put in post boxes.

I'm pleased to report that after a week of use in 85F-90F temperatures
that the S500's AC is still holding a good charge, and based on the sight
glass it has not dropped since I charged it last week (no bubbles).

Prior to sealing the system it was leaking down enough to be noticeable
performance-wise in under a week's time.

If anything, at least the rate at which it was leaking has decreased if it
hasn't stopped completely.

$40 of sealant and $40 of R134a versus an evaporator and goodness knows
how many hours tearing the thing apart was well worth it, so far.

Absolute worst case scenario if it goes south is that it stays cool for a few

I braked so hard that the car slid for a few feet and I saw a puff

Brakes are pretty even too. Slid straight as an arrow.

Thankfully, I won't need a new grill, hood etc!

This was a 40 mph zone and the street was dry so that helped too. I
was not following all that closely and did not come close to hitting

What I have found with shippers like FedEx Ground and the USPS is that they are
often surcharging you on volume, and not basing the charge totally on weight.
I can't say for UPS because I don't use them.

I sent an SL fender panel recently using the USPS. I had to use my packaging,
which was very close in size to a Priority Mail large flat rate box. The cost
was near double the flat rate box, but barely a pound. When I asked the postal
worker why, they just shrugged it off an made some remark about how they didn't
set the rates.

I suspect they discount the flat rate stuff because it's a standard size.

I don't know how this applies to the 140 bumper cover situation, but I can
remember looking up a $80 Saturn plastic fender on Rock and finding it for
something like $38 plus $60 shipping. Needless to say, you were better off
buying it for $80. Maybe it would be different if you lived VERY close to
the warehouse Rock was shipping from.

[MBZ] Old Mercedes have good brakes

2014-10-10 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
On my way back from lunch a few minutes ago, I got a bit surprised when
traffic stopped in front of me.
I braked so hard that the car slid for a few feet and I saw a puff of
blue smoke behind me and could smell burning rubber.

Brakes are pretty even too. Slid straight as an arrow.

Thankfully, I won't need a new grill, hood etc!

This was a 40 mph zone and the street was dry so that helped too. I was
not following all that closely and did not come close to hitting the
vehicle ahead of me but it sure woke me up.

That's no doubt due to the shipping really costing them far less and the
difference going towards the profit margin.

This seems to be the standard ruse with eBay and other sellers who advertise
suspiciously low prices then charge obscene amounts for shipping.

No response yet. I suspect this is going to a large parts wholesaler like
WorldPac, who will probably reject my offer for just that reason.

I don't have a 3D printer yet though I have been thinking to make one,
there are enough plans and parts now to build one that works passably
well for a coupla-few hunnad dollas. I have the computer set up and
stepper driver board for my CNC machine that could just swap over to a
3D printer with some plugs to connect the stepper motors and hot end.
Or just get a whole new set of driver electronics, the prices on that
stuff is ridiculously low now, and the chinee sources are selling all
kinds of stuff now too that work fairly well with some tuning.

Trouble is those things take damn near forever to print something of any
size.

Uh, right. That would be one HECK of a 3D printer.

Yeah, I considered the plugs, but it really messes with the lines
of the car. I'm willing to wait to find the right one if
necessary, it's just that the grille on the bottom is busted up and
look like crap.

Sounds like a good use for a 3D printer.
1) Build a nice 3D model of the part.
2) Buy a nice, big 3D printer.
3) Print your part.
4) Sell us printing services for all our miscellaneous parts. :)

Or perhaps more cost-effectively, find out if there is a cover
plug for the sensor holes. I would be surprised if you couldn't
find something that fit.

Bumper cover - $130
Shipping - $175
