Pull the electrical connector at the monovalve. That should let the
monovalve stay full open. If still no heat, the monoalve insert is toast.
Good luck finding a replacement.

The classic symptom of a torn monovalve insert is heat ONLY at low
engine RPM. It is possible, but not likely, that a damaged insert
would cause no heat. But it could be electrical failure.

I'd unplug the electrical connector on the monovalve and go for a
drive. That is the full heat setting. If there is still no heat,
it has to be the monovalve or the coolant flow. If there is heat -
then it's the controller.

2014-12-22 Thread Jon Agne via Mercedes
Hi Andrew,

Go with a new OE mono-valve. I had the same issue and bought 2 chinese
mono-valves from Rusty before crying uncle. The OE ($146 IIRC) has worked
perfectly since it was installed almost 3 winters ago. The cheap Chinese ones
would get a little tear in the rubber diaphragm allowing the coolant (under
pressure) to get where it shouldn’t.

The other 2 issues that will affect you are the actual sensor itself (under the
little grill in your dash) and the tube. I do not think that these are your
problem now, but if you replace them…..your system will work completely as
designed. I did both, and my wife has no more complaints about the temperature
control.

Union Station to pick up my 2.3-16, which I promptly overheated driving down
i-90 and i-94 at 0-10mph. I don't think I ever got that car to 50mph the whole
time I had it in Illinois.

Major company branches seldom move to Atlanta
proper; they move to one of the outlying areas.
MB is probably thinking of the Atlanta area for
several reasons: lower overhead, a world class
airport with direct flights to all major
international cities, seldom any weather
disruptions in the winter, major international
ground and air shipping routes and facilities,
a few hours drive or 45 minute flight to their

Company employees transferred to the Atlanta

Battery-swap station can send Teslas back on road in 3 minutesPublished:
Monday, December 22, 2014

Tesla Motors drivers in California will soon have a faster way to recharge
their batteries when driving from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

The company says the battery-swapping station it opened Friday will allow
customers to recharge their vehicles in about three minutes. Eventually,
Tesla hopes to replace a battery in as little as one minute.

Tesla already has high-speed "supercharger" stations in many areas of the
country, but that equipment takes three hours to fully recharge a battery
-- though that's still faster than many other electric vehicle charging
stations.

Unlike the supercharger stations, which Tesla lets vehicle owners use at no
cost, battery-swapping will require paying a surcharge, which it said would
be "slightly less than a full tank of gasoline for a premium sedan."

The company said the new battery-swapping station is located in an area of
Interstate 5 just north of the Los Angeles area, near a supercharger
station that is popular with drivers (David Baker, *San Francisco Chronicle*
,
Dec. 19).

Drove back from NYC last night and almost froze to death. Crazy symptoms:

1. Blower works fine but even with wheel pegged to max heat, there is no
warmth to the air flow.

2. Two right side dash vents blow so cold they had to be shut off; two left
side blow lukewarm at best

3. Air to floor is icy cold (ambient air?).

4.  Problem worsened as time went on.

Ideas?

I was thinking the problem could be blamed on one of the following:
1. defective mono valve
2. push button ACC malfunction (system not responsive to temp. wheel)
3. defective "AC heater and control valve - used with A/C and heating
controls in dash":

Anyone ever repalced a W123 "AC & Heater Control Valve?"  If so, what
symptoms did it resolve?

Incidentally, the AC blew ICE COLD all summer long.

BTW, how do you account for the large price difference in new monovalves
offered on ebay that appear to be identical:

OTOH, paying for a MD inpection is a pretty good deal as a pre-purchase
inspection prior to buying a used car from an individual (doesn't have to
be from MD either).

[MBZ] Tesla Motors' killer app

2014-12-22 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes

The company said the new battery-swapping station is located in an area of
Interstate 5 just north of the Los Angeles area, near a supercharger
station that is popular with drivers (David Baker, *San Francisco Chronicle*
,
Dec. 19).

The headlight aiming scam may have been abolished since the last time I
lived here (1997). Stil, it's a royal PIA and expense getting a car
through inspection in 2014.

BTW, we have a new R governor so all you right wingers should be
comfortable moving in, paying your taxes (maybe you'll get a rebate based
on your political affiliation), and settling in to the only State with an
Italian language motto:

"The official motto of Maryland is the Italian motto of the Calvert family
- "Fatti maschil, Parole femine" (loosely translated as "*Manly deeds,
Womanly words*")."

I will give a jar of my notorious jalapeno pepper jelly to each and every
one of you as a further inducement to settle, payable on the 1 year
anniversary of your residency.

On a recent trip to MD we discussed in class how bad the drivers were. I
pointed out that I didn't think the drivers were so bad but I couldn't figure
out the flow of traffic. We decided the problem was that so many people weren't
from MD that there was no cultural flow to the traffic, everybody came in with
their own cultural style of driving and wouldn't integrate. My hyper-aggressive
MA driving style gets me through most places but I felt very exposed in MD
where I could never go fast enough to get away from people. It felt like
everybody was out to get me all the time but I was boxed in and couldn't get
away.Very off-putting.
In all honesty I really didn't need a car, I didn't realize how close Silver
Spring is to Regan airport, I should have just taken a cab, the car sat in the
parking garage all week.

I fear the flip side of all that, is that if you educate everyone, there
will be no one willing to do the dirty work.
Everyone with a "higher" education feels entitled to a white collar job
where they won't get their hands dirty.

Hopefully, we can automate the jobs that require a button pushed or a
lever pulled so that people have meangingful work.

I do think that the old fashioned apprenticeship was likely a better
form of education than most of our highschools and universities provide
today.
Sadly, just having the diploma does not mean that you learned much or
even that they tried to teach you much.

Didn't Atlanta basically shut down for a week last year for a couple
inches of snow? Don't they shut down every couple years for a hurricane?
Don't they have tornadoes in Georgia? Seems like the north east has way
fewer weather disruptions. While I agree that southerners tend to be
friendly but in my experience they also tend to be uneducated and dumb.
This often is the reason given for car makers leaving places like Alabama

A friend of mine went to Georgia a few years ago and loved it. Then after
a doctor screw up he died. I blame it on Georgia.

Major company branches seldom move to Atlanta proper; they move to one of

several reasons: lower overhead, a world class airport with direct flights

a few hours drive or 45 minute flight to their plant in Alabama, etc.
Besides that, Atlanta is probably more of an international city than

Company employees transferred to the Atlanta area seldom have problems

2014-12-22 Thread WILTON via Mercedes
I was 12 or 13 when I realized that the key to a better life and a better
feeling of self-worth is education, and I've said many times since then
that, "If every child, every teenager, could have even a little bit of the
intense desire for an education that I had, the world would need many more
schools and teachers, but no truant officers, less police and drastically
fewer prisons. The drop-out rate and "street" crime would be nil.

After age 12, I never missed a day of school; many times I went to great
lengths to get my school assignments done, sometimes staying up all night.
Some of the other boys at school started calling me "Brain," because of my
performance in class, writing papers, giving speeches, etc., but it
certainly was not because I was any smarter than anybody else; it was simply
because I had spent a LOT of time outside of class in preparation.

My incentive came not so much from my parents, neither of whom went beyond
about fifth grade, though they both always wanted me to get an education and
do well, a much greater incentive came from listening to my older brothers
talk about their experiences. I owe a debt to my brothers that I'll never
be able to repay - they not only gave me the incentive, they made it
possible in many ways.

Wilton I like your attitude toward education and I feel like if more
people of your generation had felt that way we might be better off today.
Here in mill country lots of people never bothered to get any schooling
because they could always get a job at the mill. Well not anymore they
can't and its sad to see people who are basically unemployable because
they've got no real skills beyond pushing a button or pulling a lever. The
guy that lives next door to us is a good case in point, he's in his
mid-40s, he's been working in a plastics factory for 20+ years since he
was in high school. If that factory closes he's up the creek because he
really doesn't know how to do much of anything. I've suggested he ought to
take a few classes but he doesn't see the point. I haven't mentioned that
I'm nearly 10 years younger than he is and make nearly 3x what he does...

Yep, another one.

R. J. WORKS FARM
By Wilton Strickland

In the first week of January, 1939, a few days after losing the Neuse
River Farm, all of our machinery and the horses, near Raleigh, NC, we
moved

back to the R. J. Works Farm near Rocky Mount as sharecroppers.
On an afternoon in late January, the farm owner’s son, Raymond Junior,
about 17 or 18, came one day to shoot rats in the stables and hay barn. As
he bent down to go between the boards in the corral fence, he fired his
automatic .22 caliber rifle many times into a cow paddy on the ground
inside

the fence. As Raymond went on into the barn, I picked up one of the spent
cartridge shells, sniffed it and sucked it up my nose, where it lodged.
Mama had to take me to a doctor in town to remove it. I did not visit a
doctor again until 13 years later when I needed a physical exam before
entering NC State College.
In early spring I watched attentively as a new 6-inch-diameter well was
drilled in the yard near the house. The large pile of seashells removed
from the hole was very interesting. This was probably my first geology
lesson - or the first time I had thought about it, anyway. I enjoyed
studying the many types of seashells that came out of the hole and was
very
fascinated to realize that an ocean had covered this area at some time
long

ago.
During the summer, one of my favorite pastimes was catching lots of
lightning bugs (fireflies) in a small glass jar in early evening and
watching them glow in the dark. Another “game” was to attach a June bug (a
dark green beetle-type, flying insect about ¾” long) to the end of a
string

and walk or run around with it flying at the end of the string. Another
favorite activity was to push a steel ring or hoop (usually discarded from
a

piece of farm machinery) with a stick. The hoop was usually about 1 to 2
feet in diameter, and I could easily push and control it with light ”nudges”
on the side with a stick as I ran behind it.
I often also enjoyed listening to the radio, especially a local country
music show, “Talmage and Paul” (Talmage Pollard and Paul Byrd) at noon,
until the large battery-powered, console unit caught fire and was
permanently disabled. ‘Also enjoyed listening to “Gang Busters” and “The
Green Hornet“ in early evening.
(Many years later, I would occasionally see Paul Byrd, Jr., who married
my brother, Carson’s, sister-in-law. I enjoyed hearing him tell stories

[MBZ] Holiday parties

2014-12-22 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes

We had ours last night. A whole lot of cleaning went on,
including a (for me, rare) dump run. SWMBA wanted all the
cars away from the front of the house in order to maximize
guest parking. (About 30 guests, I think.) It was a fairly
warm day, mid-40's and sunny, and for a change the semi-
comatose cars cooperated. The 560 SEL actually _started_,
so I got it backed out of the way. The Chicken Wagon started
readily, of course, and with its bad B2 (?) was able to creep
forward enough that I could get it into reverse and park it
out of the way too.

The 'heap, of course, cooperated nicely, and I ran it out
to the end of the range, to mark beyond where not to go.
I ran an extension cord out to power the in-car Christmas
lights, and hooked up a battery charger so as to gain the
parking lights as well. Very festive!

It was eerie, having a completely empty parking pad. I even
swept it, and poured fertilizer on all the oil spots. Easy
to put six cars on concrete, and plenty of room for many
more on the gravel.

I don't want to leave the cars where they are, they need
to be closer for tool access and electricity, and I dread
SWMBA's reaction when I put them back!

I'm not sure if any of the Syntec Blend is diesel rated, but 10w-40 would be the

2014-12-22 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I would start with looking at the monovalve.

As for the disparity in prices, I would suspect that the URO folks are somehow
involved.

A URO rep surfaced a while ago over at BenzWorld and he tried to defend their
products. Needless to say he went quiet rather quickly as people took him to
task over URO's crappy parts.

A friend of mine roasted his transmission while vacationing in VA in 1993, he
salvaged the trip by trading his car in on a new one. Dealer registered it in VA
for him, I was stunned that his brand new Toyota had an inspection sticker in
the windshield.
I agree with Curt, what a waste of money to inspect a new car.

tough, but they have quit doing mechanical and now only check for emissions.

[MBZ] 1985 300TD Blows Ice Cold no matter how cold it is outside - even with the heat on!

2014-12-22 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes

0008000478
Genuine Mercedes - AC &
Heater Control Valve; Changeover Valve for Climate Control; 2 Pin & 2
Vacuum Connectors
Anyone ever repalced a W123 "AC & Heater Control Valve?" If so, what
symptoms did it resolve?

Incidentally, the AC blew ICE COLD all summer long.

BTW, how do you account for the large price difference in new monovalves
offered on ebay that appear to be identical:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=mercedes+mono+valve&_from=R40%7CR40&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xmercedes+mono+valve+%2B+%28w123%2C+300d%29&_nkw=mercedes+mono+valve+%2B+%28w123%2C+300d%29&_sacat=0

No inspection in Florida.

I've heard that Virginia inspection is a real ball buster, too.

I agree about the convenience factor as far as repairs. The S420 needed a new
window regulator on the right rear window. Only reason I replaced it was
because my tint guys needed the window to work or they wouldn't tint the car. I
don't know how long it had been that way when Tom owned it, but it appears to
have been out of commission for some time.

I will say that W140 window regulators are a piece of cake to replace, despite
having to drill out rivets to remove them.

All viscosities were sold out last night, so it's probably a dead deal.

Why wouldn't a new car pass? What could possibly be unsafe in a new car that
would make this inspection worth it?
I find there very little redeeming about Maryland and you're not helping the
case any.

MD inspection is brutal.  It costs $75.00, takes a full hour incouding a
road test and NOBODY passes the first time around - even new cars.  There
is no point in buying a used car here unless the owner agrees to take it
through and PASS inspection.

Theres not that much that could make that pair go out. I'm going to guess a
failed motor which makes the fuse pop and he's too lazy to fix the motor. The
lazy factor in sellers cannot be under estimated. I actually I don't really
think its laziness, its like the 240D I gave to Dimitri, I just got to the

Wilton I like your attitude toward education and I feel like if more people of
your generation had felt that way we might be better off today. Here in mill
country lots of people never bothered to get any schooling because they could
always get a job at the mill. Well not anymore they can't and its sad to see
people who are basically unemployable because they've got no real skills beyond
pushing a button or pulling a lever. The guy that lives next door to us is a
good case in point, he's in his mid-40s, he's been working in a plastics
factory for 20+ years since he was in high school. If that factory closes he's
up the creek because he really doesn't know how to do much of anything. I've
suggested he ought to take a few classes but he doesn't see the point. I
haven't mentioned that I'm nearly 10 years younger than he is and make nearly
3x what he does...

Yep, another one.

R. J. WORKS FARM
By Wilton Strickland

In the first week of January, 1939, a few  days after losing the Neuse
River Farm, all of our machinery and the horses, near Raleigh, NC, we moved
back to the R. J. Works Farm near Rocky Mount as sharecroppers.
On an afternoon in late January, the farm owner’s son, Raymond Junior,
about 17 or 18, came one day to shoot rats in the stables and hay barn.  As
he bent down to go between the boards in the corral fence, he fired his
automatic .22 caliber rifle many times into a cow paddy on the ground inside
I enjoyed
studying the many types of seashells that came out of the hole and was very
fascinated to realize that an ocean had covered this area at some time long
ago.
During the summer, one of my favorite pastimes was catching lots of
lightning bugs (fireflies) in a small glass jar in early evening and
watching them glow in the dark.  Another “game” was to attach a June bug (a
dark green beetle-type, flying insect about ¾” long) to the end of a string
and walk or run around with it flying at the end of the string.  Another
favorite activity was to push a steel ring or hoop (usually discarded from a
piece of farm machinery) with a stick.
I enjoyed hearing him tell stories
about his father and his music partner.)
Another vivid memory is of my brother, Jerry, “looping” or “stringing”
tobacco on this farm.  (“Looping” tobacco is the process of using cotton
string to attach leaves of tobacco to sticks to facilitate hanging it in a
curing barn.)  One afternoon, Jerry and one of his teenage, female helpers
got a little too flirtatious for Daddy, and I heard Daddy scold them, “Son,
we’re barnin’ tobacco, now.  Stop playing around.  You can do your courting
tonight.”  More than fifty years later, after Jerry’s first wife of nearly
fifty years had died, Jerry returned to Rocky Mount and married the former
playful teen and helper, by then widowed.
Beside our house was a nice, large grove of pecan trees enclosed in a
chain link fence.  I enjoyed gathering and eating the fresh nuts in autumn.
Any pecan trees that I’ve seen since have been measured against these; I’ve
seen few to meet the standard, and I’ve wanted some pecan trees of my own
ever since.
Sometime in the fall, another neighbor boy, Carl Bateman, about 16,
came to the house one day to see my older brothers.  While there, Carl drove
the front of his dad’s ’36 Ford up onto a large pile of tobacco sticks
leaning against the tobacco pack house and grading room.  With the front of
the car way up in the air on the pile of sticks, Carl raced the engine,
spinning the rear wheels and digging them into the ground up to the axle.
The boys had to

Didn't Atlanta basically shut down for a week last year for a couple inches of
snow? Don't they shut down every couple years for a hurricane? Don't they have
tornadoes in Georgia? Seems like the north east has way fewer weather
disruptions. While I agree that southerners tend to be friendly but in my
experience they also tend to be uneducated and dumb. This often is the reason
given for car makers leaving places like Alabama and going to Ontario.
A friend of mine went to Georgia a few years ago and loved it. Then after a
doctor screw up he died. I blame it on Georgia.
For me anything after Connecticut is too far south ;)

Major company branches seldom move to Atlanta proper; they move to one of the
outlying areas. MB is probably thinking of the Atlanta area for several
reasons: lower overhead, a world class airport with direct flights to all major
international cities, seldom any weather disruptions in the winter, major
international ground and air shipping routes and facilities, a few hours drive
or 45 minute flight to their plant in Alabama, etc.
Besides that, Atlanta is probably more of an international city than anyplace
in New Jersey. Over 60% of the Atlanta area population are from someplace
besides Georgia; including numerous foreign countries.

Company employees transferred to the Atlanta area seldom have problems
acclimating to the local culture since Georgians, like Southerners in general,
are friendly and hospitable.
Jaimie and his friends would probably settle in quickly and be glad they were
transferred to the Atlanta area.

Most states don't have inspection. An honest state inspector will
pass a decent car, if it is ok.

Why not? MA cares that the wheel bearings aren't all loose, the exhaust exists
and the lights and wipers work.
Believe it or not some states don't even have inspection. I feel like its very
easy to forget that we live in a big country thats not the same everywhere...

[MBZ] Fw: OT - A COUNTRY BOY REMEMBERS - R. J. WORKS FARM

2014-12-22 Thread WILTON via Mercedes

Yep, another one.

R. J. WORKS FARM
By Wilton Strickland

In the first week of January, 1939, a few days after losing the Neuse
River Farm, all of our machinery and the horses, near Raleigh, NC, we moved
back to the R. J. Works Farm near Rocky Mount as sharecroppers.
On an afternoon in late January, the farm owner’s son, Raymond Junior,
about 17 or 18, came one day to shoot rats in the stables and hay barn. As
he bent down to go between the boards in the corral fence, he fired his
automatic .22 caliber rifle many times into a cow paddy on the ground inside
I enjoyed
studying the many types of seashells that came out of the hole and was very
fascinated to realize that an ocean had covered this area at some time long
I enjoyed hearing him tell stories
about his father and his music partner.)
The boys had to jack up the rear of the car and put boards under the rear
wheels to get it down off the pile of sticks.
I think Carl had seen Lucky Teeter, a stunt driver then touring
agricultural fairs, too much. Our home was not far across the woods and
fields from the Rocky Mount fair grounds. At night during fair week, I
could hear the engines of Lucky’s cars as they did their stunts, jumping
buses and driving on two wheels. I begged my brother, Jerry, then 18,
several times to take me to see Lucky, but I never did see the act in
person. Sixty years later, I kidded Jerry that that’s what’s been “wrong”
with me all these years - I did not get to see Lucky Teeter.
This, again, was not a very profitable year for the family. In spite
of raising 25 acres of tobacco, at the end of the year, we had made only
$11.
Jerry had graduated from high school the previous year and wanted to go
to school at Rocky Mount School of Commerce to study accounting, but neither
he nor Daddy had the $100 necessary for the tuition. After the land
