Re: [MBZ] W123 vs W140

2015-01-06 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
You need to find another dealer.

W140 parts, no matter how strange, are readily available through MBNA. The only
things that are drying up are soft froo-froo parts like floor mats for the
coupe.

Next time you run into this or even think you can't find something for a W140,
let me know and I'll get a definitive answer from my dealer parts guy.

 They’re a 1404210312, $129/each for the discs.

This is for the 300SE 3.2, chassis 140033/140042, correct?

Gimme a VIN. I’ll bet the parts are available and in stock at MB.

[MBZ] Push Car. was: So what do I want?

2015-01-06 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
...
G: BIL built a red, 2 place push car for small children that had a handle like
a push lawnmower. Each evening the kids wanted a push. That soon got old since
they would jerk the steering wheel back and forth and the pusher had to do an
energetic dance as the little car moved side to side.
I finally tied it on the back of an old Cushman scooter with a long rope and
the kids loved their wild side-to-side driving even more.
In time they tired of it and went on to other things. I don't remember what
happened to the little red car, but the children; now grown and with kids and
grandkids of their own; still remember it fondly.

Maybe but my thought was of push cars for little folks and that all one

'Reminds me of the bar that I attached to back of #1 Grandson's bike when I
was teaching him to ride 'bout 19 years ago. It was a 20-inch bike and I
was having problem bending down slightly to hold back of the seat while
running along beside 'im. The bar attached at 2 points, one near top, front
of rear fender and another down low near pedals and curving up rearward at a
comfortable height for me made the job a lot easier. Another teaching
technique that made the process a lot easier was static training (sort of
a Link trainer). While standing still beside the bike with rider/student
mounted, I'd lean the bike left or right at random while instructing the
student, If it leans to the right, turn right; if it leans left, turn
left. After they mastered that, we'd start rolling slowly while I'd lean
it left or right and make the bike come back up as the student turned in the
right direction; if he/she turned the wrong way, I'd make the lean worse.
I've found that to be very easy with the children I've taught.

[MBZ] TOT (totally off topic) Amazing tidal power project in Scotland

2015-01-06 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
The MeyGen tidal project in Scotland will be the largest tidal power plant
in the world once operational. Atlantis, the Australian company that is
building it has just received the green light from the government and
construction should begin this month. The tidal project will be located in
an area that lies in the channel (“Inner Sound”) between the island of
Stroma and the north easterly tip of the Scottish mainland, encompassing
almost 3.5 square-km of fast flowing water.

When MeyGen is fully operational, it should have 269 turbines that produce
398MW of clean energy, generating enough electricity to power 175,000
Scottish homes.

Interesting graphic. Looks like it might supply near peak power for 1-2 hours,
twice a day, and maybe usable power for 6-8 hours twice a day?

I wonder what that does to the grid when the times of production are ever
changing, but at least it's predictable, should be even more predictable than
solar, so you should be able to ramp up/down a coal or NG plant to balance it.
Wind and wave power aren't so predictable. There's no way you can pick up a
calendar and say 'peak wind power will be at 3pm on August 15th', but you
should
be able to make plans like that with tidal power.

This sort of stuff is exactly what the banned-lite list was made for.
What year did B-L last have a new message posted to it?

Mitch.

Valero generally thinks different from the rest of the pack. Their
MO is to buy up distressed real estate (refineries and stations) and
then run them cheap. In the ethanol meltdown a few years ago, they
bought up several ethanol refineries. That gives them an edge on E10
Benzin.

Don't know if I mentioned it already, but the Valero station on River Road
in Bethesda, MD is selling diesel for $2.99, which is surprising since
there is no other competition for at least a mile away, where the price is
40 cents higher...

Interestingly diesel is holding over $3.00 (generally $3.09) in MA but down to
$2.93 just over the border in NH. That tells me the MA stations are seriously
raping us on price since NH has a higher fuel tax and traditionally prices
climb 15-20 cents when I cross the border.
Gas is around $2.39 just about everywhere, with the coming of cold weather our
slide has slowed but I heard on the radio last night that oil is under
$50/barrel so we should see prices continue to slide.

 Attaboy!

When i returned to the land of ice and snow Sunday, the washers had
frozen up in the van. SInce it will sit for quite some time, they
will stay frozen. I have noticed that the crappy blue juice started
out as good to 20 below 40 years ago, then was good to 0, then to
maybe 20. The last I looked at had no antifreeeze claim whatsoever.
THey just take water, add some blue food color to it, and bottle it
 and sell water for $1.50/jug.

A lot of the antifreeze is methanol, so if it sits a few months,
the methanol evaporates and you end up with water anyway.

Several years ago, we were forecast to get 4 - 6 inches, but got 18.

SO, here is my query to you automotive experts.

I want a large car. About the same size as my 7 series. In terms of
Mercedes that (I think) limits me to an S class.

I had a 126 S Class before and it was a very nice car. However, it was a
300SEL and it always felt underpowered. I know the 420's have the timing
chain issue. So, I suppose that would mean I am limited to a 560SEL for a
 126. I don't want to go older than 1990. So, that means, only 1990 and
1991 for 126. I would love to have a 350 SD (126 rodbender) if the rods
and assorted issues have been resolved.

OR, I look at the 140. Here is where I am relatively inexperienced.
Which 140's should I avoid? I do not want a V12. What years are best? If
the 126 6 Cyl is underpowered, I assume the 6 Cyl 140 is also.

I have almost no knowledge of any chassis newer than a 140 and I am too
 cheap to buy anything newer.

Finally, I might consider the ML. It seems like there is a definite line
between the good years and the not so good? Where is that line?

No.

That's why I'm here. Remember, I moved back to Indiana in 2008 and lived
there for two years. Prior to moving to Florida I lived in southeast
Wisconsin. I know winter all too well, well enough to know that while no
place is perfect, I will gladly dodge the occasional hurricane and live in
the heat long before I ever put up with another winter.

Filled up yesterday, local Shell station had diesel at $2.69. One local
grocery chain gives 5 cents credit toward fuel for every $50 spent on
groceries, another sells $50 gas cards for $40, one card for every $50
spent. Using both discounts, I had 20 cents off the pump price (price now
$2.49), then with the gas card paid an effective price of 80%, or $1.99 per
gallon. I can now fill the E300 tank, usually about 21 gallons when the
reserve light comes on, for less than $50. Very nice!

[MBZ] specific MB suggestions

2015-01-06 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
My 2000 BMW 740iL is a wonderful car. BUT, it has 215,000 miles. My wife
loves to ride in it when we go visit her older kids down in Ardmore, OK. It's
a 4 hour drive from Wichita, and the car really is one of the most comfortable
cars for long drives I have ever driven. BUT, as you can imagine with over
200,000 miles and being a 7 series, I am sort of on borrowed time. I know of
no specific reason to believe any major problem is going to crop up. But, it is
certainly possible. I have had a few minor things (mostly maintenance) that
occurred just recently - battery, new tires, radiator, and rear brakes.

I still really enjoy the car, but I am considering getting another. I know, I
know, you are thinking ok, Snook will have another car in a week. BUT, that is
not going to be the case this time. I have learned my lesson about getting rid
of a car and then having to buy something in a hurry. I am only going to
sell/trade my car when I find something I really want. SO, here is my query
to you automotive experts.

I want a large car. About the same size as my 7 series. In terms of Mercedes
that (I think) limits me to an S class.

I had a 126 S Class before and it was a very nice car. However, it was a
300SEL and it always felt underpowered. I know the 420's have the timing
chain issue. So, I suppose that would mean I am limited to a 560SEL for a 126.
I don't want to go older than 1990. So, that means, only 1990 and 1991 for
126. I would love to have a 350 SD (126 rodbender) if the rods and assorted
issues have been resolved.

OR, I look at the 140. Here is where I am relatively inexperienced. Which
140's should I avoid? I do not want a V12. What years are best? If the 126 6
Cyl is underpowered, I assume the 6 Cyl 140 is also.

I have almost no knowledge of any chassis newer than a 140 and I am too cheap
to buy anything newer.

Finally, I might consider the ML. It seems like there is a definite line
between the good years and the not so good? Where is that line?

Online research indicates that the problem may be a fault in the nvidia

I don't see an option for re-loading the driver, if the device itself is
not recognized.

I may fool around with system restore later.

In the meanwhile, I'll borrow an external optical drive, and start saving

Today I found that the CD/DVD drive is no longer recognized by the laptop
(does not show up in the device manager, nor in Windows Explorer).  It has
power, opens and closes fine and the green light comes one, but no-worky.

Online research indicates that the problem may be a fault in the nvidia
graphics chip.

I don't see an option for re-loading the driver, if the device itself is
not recognized.

I may fool around with system restore later.

In the meanwhile, I'll borrow an external optical drive, and start saving
nickels and dimes for a new laptop.  Six years is a nice long life for a
cheapie from Walmart, so I cannot complain at all.

My niece's Toshiba lost its optical drive. IIRC the drive showed up in the drive
list until you put a disk in it but no disk would recognize.
Paid $9.99 for a used one with free shipping on eBay. Took out one screw, yanked
the old drive out, shoved the 'new' one in, replaced the screw, and back in
business.

I will say that I miss the fall, but that's about it for seasons.

Just as people used to ask me how I could stand the winters in Wisconsin (dress
for it!) the same applies to Florida. Yeah, it's hot in the summer, but you
just jump in the pool or go inside where it's cool.

Somebody ask Renfro what it's like living in Arizona if you want hot. It
rarely exceeds 95F down here.

My 2000 BMW 740iL is a wonderful car.  BUT, it has 215,000 miles.  My

It's a 4 hour drive from Wichita, and the car really is one of the
most comfortable cars for long drives I have ever driven.  BUT, as you
can imagine with over 200,000 miles and being a 7 series, I am sort of
on borrowed time.  I know of no specific reason to believe any major
problem is going to crop up. But, it is certainly possible. I have had
a few minor things (mostly maintenance) that  occurred just recently -
battery, new tires, radiator, and rear brakes.

I still really enjoy the car, but I am considering getting another.  I
know, I know, you are thinking ok, Snook will have another car in a week.
BUT, that is not going to be the case this time.  I have learned my
lesson about getting rid of a car and then having to buy something in
a hurry.  I am only going to sell/trade my car when I find something I really
 want.

I would love to have a 350 SD (126 rodbender) if the
rods and assorted issues have been resolved.

OR, I look at the 140.  Here is where I am relatively inexperienced.
Which 140's should I avoid? I do not want a V12.  What years are best?
If the 126 6 Cyl is underpowered, I assume the 6 Cyl 140 is also.

I have almost no knowledge of any chassis newer than a 140 and I am
too cheap to buy anything newer.

Finally, I might consider the ML.  It seems like there is a definite
line between the good years and the not so good? Where is that line?

Actually, the amtrak is the route of the Burlington (CBQ) railroad

Just as people used to ask me how I could stand the winters in Wisconsin (dress

The car is a very early 123 with what I presume is a very early style
thermostat housing. We should get Dimitri to get a picture of the thermostat
 housing, its weird looking...
Remember it didn't always do this and when its overheating its bubbling
the coolant back out the radiator so its not just a temp gauge variation. My
'84 190D temp gauge creeps up sometimes but always drops back down, that one
is a gauge gone mad. I've replaced the thermostat, the radiator, and the

Did you do the compression test hot? What am I asking that for, I'm sure you
did...
You make good sense though. It actually sounds like the car starts better now
than it did when I had it. How cold was it? I figured that to be a 20F car with
conventional oil in it. Below that things got iffy which is why I had the block
heater put into it.

To tap the block with the head installed would take a very long tap. I'd go
back to my washer theory.

http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/ctd/4821402725.html

The 300SE and S320 are under powered in the w140. The body is a wonderful
thing and full of luxury. These are built like a tank in the manner of the
w126. The early w140 are troubled with bad electronics and biodegradable
wiring. The vacuum close, locking and subsystem need a fresh vac pump to get
them operating.

The good I found in the car I have is that the ACC has a conduit to Antarctica
and Hell both. It pumps out heat to keep the cabin toasty at 1*f. The AC
really does blow ice cold. IIRC the vent temp was 1*c both front and rear. We
did have to repair something related to the fan while getting it ready for
inspection. Interior build quality is real MB, not an approximation of korean
cars or mopar.

My suggestion is that you look at the '99 models. Either the 420 or 500 would
suit your needs. There is ample legroom both front and back. S500 has heated
and sliding rear seats. There are privacy option for the rear as well. The
trunk is giant, and holds many dead bodies with ease. The engine is OBD
compliant, so you can scan it for codes and can reset them without needed
buckets of tools. Mileage is less than spectacular, but improved over the
earlier examples.

If you want a bit more modern car, the w220 is an option. It has integrated
gps, more legroom than a car full of six foot basketball players need. It is
perfect for long trips, as I did a 22 hour drive from Seattle to Denver in the
S430. I was tired, but not sore.

The less than spectacular about the model is that it is built on a par with a
Korean sedan. Lower quality leather, plastic and felt for trim. Much less
metal and chrome, cheap switches, chrysler level electronics. The soft close
fails and is expensive to rebuild. The assist functions are not long term
reliable and overly expensive to remedy. Mileage is not all it is cracked up
to be, but the same as all the other benz.Air suspension fails expensively.

Should you think a w220 fits the bill, the 2004 or '05, the last of that line,
had the issues ironed out, making them much more reliable. They should have
lower miles and updated electronics. Same low caliber fit and finish as a kia

comfortable cars for long drives I have ever driven. BUT, as you can imagine
with over 200,000 miles and being a 7 series, I am sort of on borrowed time.
I know of no specific reason to believe any major problem is going to crop
up. But, it is certainly possible. I have had a few minor things (mostly
maintenance) that occurred just recently - battery, new tires, radiator, and
 rear brakes.

I still really enjoy the car, but I am considering getting another. I know,
I know, you are thinking ok, Snook will have another car in a week. BUT,
that is not going to be the case this time. I have learned my lesson about
getting rid of a car and then having to buy something in a hurry. I am only
going to sell/trade my car when I find something I really want. SO, here is
my query to you automotive experts.

So, that means, only 1990 and 1991
for 126. I would love to have a 350 SD (126 rodbender) if the rods and
 assorted issues have been resolved.

OR, I look at the 140. Here is where I am relatively inexperienced. Which
140's should I avoid? I do not want a V12. What years are best? If the 126
6 Cyl is underpowered, I assume the 6 Cyl 140 is also.

I have almost no knowledge of any chassis newer than a 140 and I am too cheap
 to buy anything newer.

Finally, I might consider the ML. It seems like there is a definite line
between the good years and the not so good? Where is that line?

I have been tracking the lower end laptops for #2 boy. The 15 models can be
had for $250 at Fry's. That gets you a dual core, 4 gig ram, and 500 gig
drive. They run Win 8 out of the box. Those are good enough to run for a few
years and swap out for another. Cutting edge laptops would be the i5 or i7,
but those are expensive and fail anyway in four years.

#1 boy has a four year old i7 that is showing its age. Upgraded the HDD,
battery is worn down, it needs an external optical drive, but the screen still
runs. Windows has shat on the thing three times since he has owned it. It
required a full rebuild and for some reason keeps crapping itself.

Re: [MBZ] specific MB suggestions

2015-01-06 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
You are correct, Craig. I don't know of any reason not to get a 420, other
than it has less power than the 500 or 560, and uses almost as much fuel.

The first years of the ML - up to 2001 - had a braking only traction
control system, the 2002 and after had a more sophisticated system. I had a
2001, that the previous owner had sorted all the early issues out of, and
had no issues with it (other than a CEL light that was the result of loose
vacuum line).

We've had a recent discussion on the difficulty of finding new parts for
some of the older MBs (123), and there have been suggestions that we might
not want older cars anymore, to buy ten years old or newer. All cars are
disposable now.

Just for grins, go drive a 2012 or newer Passat . . . .

[MBZ] 190D back to legal again

2015-01-06 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Since I haven't been driving my 190D it's legally inspected status had slipped
so yesterday I set out to wrest it from its sleep and get it inspected. It was
a mere 25F when I went out but the car started nicely enough. Unfortunately
there was some ice on the inside of the windshield so I let it run while I
scraped the outside, then left it running and went inside to warm up.After the
ice had some time to melt I started checking all the inspectables, lights, horn
etc. everything was good until I tried the washer and found a no-go. Started
digging in and found the whole system was frozen up solid. I dug out the bottle
and brought it in the house. It took a lot of hot water to melt the green
Rain-X out. Apparently its not rated for below freezing...With the bottle clean
and charged with good orange Rain-X I could finally hear the pump running but
now water was spraying out from a white thing in the line, is that a check
valve? Turns out its plastic housing wouldn't stay clamped, a coup
le zip ties fixed that. Finally the last few inches of hose had to spend a few
minutes inside my coat to melt an ice plug.
Only took an hour an a half but we finally passed inspection. Then made a run
up to Keene to get coolant for the Jetta's radiator replacement. I'm going to
let a local guy do the replacement, its gotten all the way up to 12F today and
since my car has AC the whole front bumper has to come off for the job, not a
big deal but not something I want to do outside in the cold...

How many parts for 30 year old cheeps does cheep

does the toada dealer have? Not many, I'd guess. But
that does not mean that you can't get parts.

I don't consider my cars a hobby. But they are fairly
cheap and easy to keep running. The MB mechanically
injected Diesel is inherently reliable.

You can buy what you want. As for me and mine, we
will buy old MBs as long as we can find them and keep
them running.

[MBZ] More work on cars

2015-01-06 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Replaced some fuel lines (between in-line filter and preheater
thermostat and between thermostat and lift pump) and three of six glow
plugs -- ran out of time and patience with the glow plugs. Not bad
for starting at 8 pm and getting done by 11.

A secret if you ever need to change the glow plugs on a 300D with a
603: Push the cruise control linkage forward when changing #3. Takes
the job from un-doable to easy as pie. Still requires six hands and
two lights and a lot of cursing, but much easier.

My nephew who is training to be a diesel mechanic helped, and actually
participated this time. Badly spoiled by his mother, hard to keep him
motivated, but he stuck to it this time. Still rather fumble fingered
and doesn't think things out, but progress is being made.

Found all the intake manifold bolts just barely finger tight, so
torqued them all down. Car starts better and runs MUCH better, still
got a knock in #6 at idle, probably a bad pressure valve holder seal.
Idle is vastly improved, no more shaking and pounding, so I think much
of the running issues I've had recently were due to air inflitration
from those bad lines. Cracks, rock hard, split on the ends, problem
was much worse cold.

I guess I'll find out Thursday morning if it will start sub-zero. If
not, I'll stay home till noon, the TE needs gas line repairs that will
require having a new rubber bit crimped onto a steel line, part is NLA
-- it's the line that the hose from the rear fuel pump attaches to
that jumpers to the rear of the front pump and, I think, has the bleed
line from the pressure regulator/accumulator attached. One inch long
piece of rubber hose is going bad. Later models all have banjo
fittings on the pumps, someone must have had a better idea, eh? At
any rate, I'll pull it off soon and take it to the hydraulic place my
brother found who made the hose from the rear to front pump for us
after two replacements failed in a couple weeks. 200 PSI rated fuel
line, should last a while, I think.

Next weekend I'll put the other rear wheel bearing in the TE and
hopefully shocks in the rear of the diesel -- be nice to have TO
operating cars since I need to make a trip to Chicago on the 20th.

Remember it didn't always do this and when its overheating its bubbling
the coolant back out the radiator so its not just a temp gauge variation.
My '84 190D temp gauge creeps up sometimes but always drops back down, that
one is a gauge gone mad. I've replaced the thermostat, the radiator, and
