OpenOffice was purchased by Oracle. Nothing had changed for a
_long_ time, which wasn't much of a surprise looking at Oracle and
open source software. So most of the clever people there got fed
up with do-nothing and created a fork that is more
open/free/libre. This is called "LibreOffice". At first, there it
wasn't as smooth - but it's good now.

Then OpenOffice was bought by Apache - who really does understand
(grok) open source. It is now being developed again.

So there are two. Which is better? I like the license of
LibreOffice better. But there is very little difference from the
perspective of a casual user. A "power" user may encounter some
differences, but even those are fairly minor, so far as I can tell.

If all you want is the window widgets to be similar, there are _so_
many to choose from one of 'em will be close.

For the rest of the user experience, the session manager LXDE is
a lot like MSWin in layout and feel. _I_ dislike it for that
reason - but others will likely think it feels comfortable. It's
certainly more like classic MSWin than Gnome3 or Win8!

Is there any way the OE fuse holder could be replaced with a standard
fuse holder or a circuit breaker?

The fuse is really weird, it's soldered in, but the body
clips into a regular fuse clip. There are wires to the
fuse body clips too, and they're not exactly the same
as where the fuse is soldered in.

I'm sure it could be replaced with something else, but I'd
want a good schematic to look at before I'd really want to
do this.

Jim,

I am thinking a jumper in place of the OE fuse, then mount a push
button circuit breaker

I had a door interlock mishap the other day, and our kitchen
microwave went dark. I pulled it out this morning, and found
its line fuse dead. (This is normal for the series when an
interlock 'fails'.) The fuse is abby-normal, so I pulled one
from the parts oven in the garage, and it's back in service.

Amana RR-6W is still going strong, and has only been
in service for 39 years. Built like a brick outhouse,
it's truly well-constructed inside. And heavy. If you
poke it hard enough to scoot it on the table you will
need a splint afterwards. And it doesn't beep, I like
that. To date it has needed:

1) New filter capacitors on the timer board
2) Interior lamp
3) Clean and reattach the door window glass
4) Line fuse

It was made 100% in the USA, by companies such as Amana,
Litton, Raytheon, Advance, etc.

I would call it the 240D of microwaves.

Ubuntu is intended to be a user friendly Linux, and has the overhead to
achieve it. Something from the correct era, like CentOS or Debian, will be
more difficult to administer but should feel less strained. I have
installed CentOS 4 and 5 on P4 and Celeron machines with good results,
though usually without X.

I am using Fedora as a desktop at work. It runs well, though the machine
is pretty beefy. Might be worth checking out if CentOS doesn't have
software you need.

On a related note, you might think hard about replacing those systems if
they are going to be on most of the time. I figured the power cost for
replacing my old Xeon, and the payback was pretty short.

I would reformat. The disk will be slower if it isn't ext3 or so. You may
have been running off the CD, which will certainly be laggy...

Libre office applications may be run locally.

The Java Office apps take a long time to load, in my experience. Once they
are up they are tolerable, but personally I'd rather run the real thing
(well, 2003 maybe) in Wine.

Any distribution should have rdesktop, which should work fine as long as
you have the domain security stuff off.

> While on the RDP subject: Can I install VNC everywhere and avoid the
terminal Server per seat licensing? Will it be a huge security risk to run
VNC?

You can use VNC without security concerns, but in my experience (rather
dated) performance is unusably poor. I use RDP, and SSH with remote X on
Unix. TightVNC or RealVNC may be good enough for your users now, though.

I love W7 (professional, never used home). On the same machine it booted
faster, and did about 10% better than XP transcoding video. It also seems
to handle memory better long term. I have all the animations and whatever
off, of course.

> The only reason the precision 360 video cards, (one is a quattro FX)

I thought all the Nvidia cards had a monolithic driver that installed on
any Windows. They also have a closed source Linux driver, though if you
are only doing rdesktop you will probably be happy with the open source
drivers. I have two Nvidia cards in my Fedora box at work.

> Winders 2000, though incomplete is still the best OS that M$ ever built.

I have a TRS80 model 100, found it the other day at the bottom of a tool
box. Booted right up. Microsoft, 1982, and four AA batteries.

I know a lot of folks love Macs here, but I have had the same kinds of
problems with old Macs that I've had with old enterprise desktops. In
aggregate I wouldn't consider them any more reliable than a decent x86
system running Linux.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Best Linux Distro for P4 boxes?

> Is there a better linux to use for RDP connections to a terminal server
(2003 or 2008 winders)? I am thinking the lag is because it installed with
winders, and did not make a separate partition as red hat used to.

I would reformat. The disk will be slower if it isn't ext3 or so. You may
have been running off the CD, which will certainly be laggy...

> I anticipate the main use to be to connect to a server via RDP. But some
Libre office applications may be run locally.

I use RDP, and SSH with remote X on
Unix. TightVNC or RealVNC may be good enough for your users now, though.

> because the digital video cards are not supported by lose7 (winders)

I have been able to use XP drivers on Windows 7 in most cases.

> 7 is no improvement,

> Some of the imacs are getting cheap enough that I seriously thought about
buying them for the RDC clients and just dumping all the dell stuff. Much
less hassle running old Macs, although they are getting bad too.

I know a lot of folks love Macs here, but I have had the same kinds of
problems with old Macs that I've had with old enterprise desktops. In
aggregate I wouldn't consider them any more reliable than a decent x86
system running Linux.

Best,

For voice quality, nothing beats a land line. For cell phone security, nothing
beats a BlackBerry. Hence, I still have a land line, and this is being typed on
a BlackBerry. ‎

Most "apps" are actually mobile Web sites, so if I want, say, the KBB "app", I
save a link on the desktop of the phone. All of the apps on the BlackBerry have
permissions, however the user can turn them off, or on, at his or her

Re: [MBZ] OT XP question Yay Russ!

2015-01-14 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

Russ is right (again)

XP activated, not over the internet, but over the phone. It is 100%
automated. Because these are the 10 machine license through technet,
but it has been installed on dozens, if not hundreds of computers, it
won't activate over the internet. The automated phone system used
used to crap out for the same reason. THen you'd end up talking to
some kid in india who would read off the activations numbers.

They have updated the automated phone system so that it works, and
you don't have to talk to the indian.

I beat the 140-some updates by turning off automatic updates in the
install. I downloaded SP2 and SP3 network install versions (which I
should have done long ago) so those will take care of a lot of the
updates. I have people mosly trained to not use IE, so I don't need
IE updates. Orifice will no longer be loaded, so no need for those
updates. Libre office will solve that problem. Once I get email
recovered form Outlook (trash) then I can get thunderbird working and
move mail there.Once this machine is working, then similar stuff
can be done to the other machines.

At that point, the only M$ will be the OS in preparation for moving
away from the MS desktop. once people learn libre office and
thunderbird, they they can learn *buntu and we will be away from the
M$ desktop.

Worked over the internet.

What about the heater valve on the heater hose (I presume it is on
the hose. most are. Some, like the 110,111,112 MB chassis have the
valve in the heater)

As owner of 3 F350's and one F450 all in the same year range as your F150,
I'll step in with some experience.
Ford used the same HVAC system on all the F models so should be good.

First, check at the firewall, passenger side, almost under the hood hinge.
There is a small vacuum pot there that opens the blend doors. Very often
the hard vacuum line that goes to that pot is cracked, or the rubber tube
that connects it is cracked from engine heat and age. If the line and hose
is good, start the engine and have your helper turn on heat then
air while you watch for vacuum pot operation. If it doesn't move, it's
failed. Move it by hand and hold it in position [I use a tie wrap for solo
test]. Then check for heat flow inside.

If that test fails, your options go to the blend door it's self inside the
cover under the glove compartment. Since you are not getting hot or cold
air.. I suspect that has failed closed.

Are you getting any air flow out the vents? Defrost vents blowing even cold
air? Can you hear the fan running? Fan failure is another common fault.

Cold starts is certainly a part of it but what pulled me to M1 was its
ability to withstand high temps better than standard oil. But it sure
is comforting to hear an engine spin easily when the car has been

G: The '83 300D I bought in 2000 had had Amsoil in its crankcase for the first
180,000 miles. The next 120,000 it had Mobil 1 except for a year or so of Delo.
The mechanic who finished putting on the chain when I broke my hip, said it was
in great shape. It still starts at the touch of the key. The Amsoil certainly
didn't hurt it.

reduced price and buy the oil and other products at wholesale prices. If
you prefer not to do that I can sell it to you.

Even paying the dealer fee gets the oil for less than buying retail.

We used the "burban" as my sons called it for family purposes but it

Just like the F150 does now. I drive the old MB as much as I can in the

step in with some experience.
Ford used the same HVAC system on all the F models so should be good.
First, check at the firewall, passenger side, almost under the hood hinge.
There is a small vacuum pot there that opens the blend doors. Very often the
hard vacuum line that goes to that pot is cracked, or the rubber tube that
connects it is cracked from engine heat and age. If the line and hose is good,
start the engine and have your helper turn on heat then air while you
watch for vacuum pot operation. If it doesn't move, it's failed. Move it by
hand and hold it in position [I use a tie wrap for solo test]. Then check for
heat flow inside.
If that test fails, your options go to the blend door it's self inside the
cover under the glove compartment. Since you are not getting hot or cold air..
I suspect that has failed closed.
Are you getting any air flow out the vents? Defrost vents blowing even cold
air? Can you hear the fan running? Fan failure is another common fault.

with 134. But, never did get cool. The a/c is obviously a non-issue for a
while. But, NO heat is a little rough this time of year.

2015-01-14 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
Horse people are very fadish and one up. So if you want to win horse
shows, you have to show up with the best looking rider, the most
expensive horse, the most expensive tack, the biggest trailer with
living quarters, and the biggest truck. OTR trucks with a short bed
and lots of chrome make the best impression and get the most ribbons.
(expensive = they tell everyone what is cost was outrageously
expensive, or it looks more expensive than what everyone else has.)

As an old cowboy/wrangler friend of mine once said, "I ain't seen a
horse yet that can eat ribbons."

The vehicles that I wonder about are the Ford Excursion. My
stepdaughter rides Horses competitively. Whenever we have been to
competitions, the arena parking lots are full of Ford Excursions
pulling huge horse trailers. I talked to one of the other parents
that had one and he said they are very popular among the "horse
folk" because they can tow so much and they have room for a lot of
people. In fact used prices on the Excursions has started to go
up. This is especially true for the Diesels. But, the V10's are
still very popular too. I think there might be a real market for
buying old Excursions, restoring them and reselling them. But, it
could just be a fad.

Almost certainly this is the crux of the thing. The time for synthetic oil is
when you NEED the car to start when its cold out.If it were to be very cold out
I'd want a 5w or even 0w in the engine. I used M1 0w40 some in my '83 240D but
the engine was loud and it leak/consumed it bad, 5w40 was a better compromise
in that car. I suspect an OM61x car would tolerate the 0w40 better but needs it
less as they'll start when its much colder.

Wat do people think of the Chevy Suburban? More or less hideous

What year? The "Suburban" name under the Chevrolet label has been
in continuous production since 1934.

The car isn't bad. The type of trim and the demographics of the
purchasers of the Escalade have created a stereotype. But the car
itself is the same as the GMC Yukon and the Chevrolet Suburban -
and all are decent. I think even Holden has sold one.

There there are the Suburbans by Chrysler, Studebaker, Nash, and
the Suburban-like Travelall by International.
