Re: [MBZ] Lucas Transmission Fix

2015-03-14 Thread rogerhga--- via Mercedes
Mitch,
We may have different problems, yet looking for positive results.  The
used tranny my Indie installed "supposedly" only had 95K on it and my Indie
said it looked really good and clean, but...  It was from a parts yard in AZ so
my Indie said some internals might have dried out causing my problems.  And my
Indie won't overhaul a tranny only replace them.  My tranny shifts ok when
first cold and it shifts ok if you let it take off at soft pedal.  But once
warm or if you give it a hard pedal it wants to slip/flare between 2-3 and 3-4
gears.  Once in 4th, in runs great.  If you use the kickdown, it will
slip/flare dropping back into 3rd.  You can give it hard pedal and let up
slightly at about 30-35 mph and it will jump from 2nd into 4th and continue
fine.  My Indie has checked everything, linkage, vacuum, modulator, etc. with
no success.
So, if the Lucas helps that would be great.  If not, I'll just adjust to
how it shifts.  I've got three other vehicles, so it's not a daily driver.
Again, good luck to both of us.

I've actually got three things going on:

1. Won't downshift into first when in overdrive, and as it gets worse, won't
always shift into first from reverse. Still works fine in drive, and in
overdrive as long as you shift back into drive while you're still going over
30mph. This is a sticking piston, I've heard it's plastic and gets bent after
150k or so. Mine started doing it at about 180k.

2. Hard shift into 2nd. I this is a worn clutch pack but I'm not sure.
Don't expect magic chemicals to fix it.

3. Doesn't always lock the converter at freeway speeds. This one throws a code,
so the computer is trying to lock it but it just doesn't happen.

4. I just remembered one more. In real cold weather, there were a couple of
times it didn't want to go forward or backward for the first 30-60 seconds.
Makes me wonder how much of 1-3 is from a weak pump.

I have a good used valve body, complete with pump and all solenoids including
the TQ solenoid. I figure that when I have the time to put that in, everything
but the slow hard shift into 2nd should go away.

Now Curt has me thinking. The Lucas has a definite odor, but is it ATF-like or
weakly like gear oil? It doesn't smell as strong as gear oil. I guess it's been
a few years since I sniffed a fresh bottle of 85W-90 or dino ATF. It's way
thicker than pancake syrup, whatever is in it.

Mitch.

[MBZ] Lucas Transmission Fix

2015-03-14 Thread rogerhga--- via Mercedes
Mitch,
My 1980 300SD with the used tranny installed a year ago slips between
2/3 and 3/4 under medium load.  I just had it serviced and had a bottle of
Lucas added.  Lucas claims to fix slipping, hard shifts, etc. etc.  There was
no immediate improvement as some claim on Youtube.  I'll report back as well
once I've driven it awhile.  If it doesn't show improvement, I'll take it back
to my Indie for a drain and refill with regular ATF.  My Indie thought I was
crazy (maybe I am), but he didn't see how a product could fix both hard
shifting and slipping as they are at somewhat opposite ends of the problem
scale.  But I'm still open about it so I'll wait and see.
Good luck to you too.
Best Wishes,

Besides the other ills this POS has been exhibiting,
lately it smells 'gassy'. I looked into it, and found
the $%%#$ EHA valve leaking. Through the body, it's

I installed it this morning. I also noted that the air

that's not good. I tried re-centering it, again, and
I guess today we'll see if things are any better.

I've been wondering about ESP lately.
If you put it to work, the brakes wear out, and does it just let you go faster
before you lose control?

If you can manage to not up the speed when driving with ESP, it should be a big

[MBZ] Lucas Transmission Fix

2015-03-14 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes

Is Lucas Transmission Fix the stuff Curt recommends?

It feels strange squeezing (you can't pour it) something into an auto trans that
looks like STP with red dye and smells like 140w gear oil.

Aren't there things inside transmissions that don't react well to sulphur?

Anyway, put about 10oz of the stuff in a Taurus with a sticky valve piston, will
report back to the list next weekend with results.

There was one of those corn shellers in the barn when I sold the farm in
KY, had an auction beforehand, not sure how much it brought. I thought
about keeping it but had nowhere to put it and not sure what I would have
done with it had I kept it. I think some Amish guy bought it, they go for
that stuff.

There was also a hand version of the sower for the garden, it had a bunch
of little gear-type things you put a different one in depending on what
kind of seed you were planting.

Did you ever ride on the tobacco planter and use it? I remember my
granddaddy had one, one morning he would go out and pick all the little
plants from the plant bed, then hitch the mule to the planter and off to
the field. He would have to get another man to either drive the mule or
work the planting. It had a sort of conveyor with little pointed trays on
it, kinda like a little garden trowel, which was geared to the wheels on
the planter, as you went along the guy working the plants would put a
plant in the tray which would then go down and get stuck in the ground by
the pointy tray thing. I guess it was all organized to get the plants at
just the proper spacing. Had to work that thing fast.

Yep, another one:

THE CORN CROP
By Wilton Strickland

Preparing the soil for corn was done much the same way as for cotton.
The same planter was used with a different seed disk installed to space
plants farther apart. The crop also required periodic plowing and
chopping with hand-held hoes to keep fields cleared of weeds and grass.
At least once during the growing season we gave the corn plants
additional fertilizer by dropping a small hand full of sodium nitrate
("soda") near each plant. As a boy of 9, 10, 11, I used a smaller bucket
than my older, bigger brothers to carry the "soda" along in my left hand
as I applied it near the plants with my right hand. My bucket was
usually a gallon paint can with a rag wrapped around the handle to ease
the pain of the handle cutting into my hand.
We usually harvested the dried corn in October or November by hand
one ear at a time. Two mules pulled a wagon through the field straddling
a row of corn. Two to four men or boys would walk along between the rows
of corn near the wagon and pull each ear of corn from its stalk and throw
it into the wagon. We were seldom lucky enough to have gloves to protect
our hands from the cutting leaves and shucks. When the wagon was full,
we would take the corn to the crib - a storage building usually adjoining
the stables and hog pen where the corn was often used to feed the
animals. Like most activities on our farm, the unloading was also done
by hand.
The corn crib usually included a mechanical, hand-cranked corn
sheller mounted on the side of a wooden box on legs that raised it to a
comfortable standing height. The shelling mechanism was a disc rotated
by the hand crank. On the inner face of the disc were lots of little
spikes or nipple-like protrusions that would grip and loosen the kernels
of corn as the ear was deposited into a chute at the top. One side of
the chute was mounted on adjustable springs that allowed the chute
diameter to expand and contract to fit the size of the ear of corn and
keep pressure on the kernels. The rotating disc would give the ear of
corn a spinning motion and pull it farther down into the chute causing
the kernels to separate from the cob and fall into a box beneath the
sheller. The diameter of the chute decreased toward the bottom to ensure
that all of the kernels were removed. The cobs would continue on through
the chute and be discharged out one side of the unit as rotation of the
disc continued. Another ear of corn could be inserted at the top of the
chute before the ear ahead of it had finished to provide more efficient
use of the cranking motion.

Rich,

Thanks, nice little bit of recent history.

Talking about discrimination in the grade schools, I was really struck by one
of the ladies comments that she felt her role was to prove (as a black student)
that she was just as capable as the white students.

That was about fifty years ago.

Now we have a unified school board for all of Charleston county. I think that a
majority of the school board members are black. About three years ago, they
released a five-year plan for raising student performance, with goals each year
for increasing the English and math proficiency at each grade level.

They had different, lower standards for black kids.

I was, and still am, flabbergasted. I challenged several Principals and school
board members, but they all tried to explain about "difficult socioeconomic
circumstances" and such BS.

Seems to me that many of our current school board and Charleston county school
district employees are completely ignorant of this local history, are racist,
and need to find employment elsewhere.

Re: [MBZ] OT - A COUNTRY BOY REMEMBERS - THE CORN CROP

2015-03-14 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
There was one of those corn shellers in the barn when I sold the farm in
KY, had an auction beforehand, not sure how much it brought. I thought
about keeping it but had nowhere to put it and not sure what I would
have done with it had I kept it. I think some Amish guy bought it, they
go for that stuff.

There was also a hand version of the sower for the garden, it had a
bunch of little gear-type things you put a different one in depending on
what kind of seed you were planting.

Did you ever ride on the tobacco planter and use it? I remember my
granddaddy had one, one morning he would go out and pick all the little
plants from the plant bed, then hitch the mule to the planter and off to
the field. He would have to get another man to either drive the mule or
work the planting. It had a sort of conveyor with little pointed trays
on it, kinda like a little garden trowel, which was geared to the wheels
on the planter, as you went along the guy working the plants would put a
plant in the tray which would then go down and get stuck in the ground
by the pointy tray thing. I guess it was all organized to get the
plants at just the proper spacing. Had to work that thing fast.

Yep, another one:

THE CORN CROP
By Wilton Strickland

Preparing the soil for corn was done much the same way as for
cotton. The same planter was used with a different seed disk installed
to space plants farther apart. The crop also required periodic
plowing and chopping with hand-held hoes to keep fields cleared of
weeds and grass.
At least once during the growing season we gave the corn plants
additional fertilizer by dropping a small hand full of sodium nitrate
("soda") near each plant. As a boy of 9, 10, 11, I used a smaller
bucket than my older, bigger brothers to carry the "soda" along in my
left hand as I applied it near the plants with my right hand. My
bucket was usually a gallon paint can with a rag wrapped around the
handle to ease the pain of the handle cutting into my hand.
We usually harvested the dried corn in October or November by hand
one ear at a time. Two mules pulled a wagon through the field
straddling a row of corn. Two to four men or boys would walk along
between the rows of corn near the wagon and pull each ear of corn from
its stalk and throw it into the wagon. We were seldom lucky enough to
have gloves to protect our hands from the cutting leaves and shucks.
When the wagon was full, we would take the corn to the crib - a
storage building usually adjoining the stables and hog pen where the
corn was often used to feed the animals. Like most activities on our
farm, the unloading was also done by hand.
The corn crib usually included a mechanical, hand-cranked corn
sheller mounted on the side of a wooden box on legs that raised it to
a comfortable standing height. The shelling mechanism was a disc
rotated by the hand crank. On the inner face of the disc were lots of
little spikes or nipple-like protrusions that would grip and loosen
the kernels of corn as the ear was deposited into a chute at the top.
One side of the chute was mounted on adjustable springs that allowed
the chute diameter to expand and contract to fit the size of the ear
of corn and keep pressure on the kernels. The rotating disc would
give the ear of corn a spinning motion and pull it farther down into
the chute causing the kernels to separate from the cob and fall into a
box beneath the sheller. The diameter of the chute decreased toward
the bottom to ensure that all of the kernels were removed. The cobs
would continue on through the chute and be discharged out one side of
the unit as rotation of the disc continued. Another ear of corn could
be inserted at the top of the chute before the ear ahead of it had
finished to provide more efficient use of the cranking motion.

Anyway, car has 154k on it, second owner (not first as he said in the
ad), a CPO car when he bought it in Alexandria, VA from the MB dealer
there. 3000 mile oil changes, all service done by the dealer with
documentation, good mechanicals, pretty decent cosmetics, everything
works.

The car was amazingly peppy for a six in a W140 chassis, as we took it
out on the interstate and I really put my foot into it. Certainly not
the neck-snapping response you get from the M119, but still pretty good
considering the significantly smaller engine with the same amount of iron
behind it and the AC running full blast.

It's got some sort of 3M clear film on the nose and hood that was
installed by the VA dealer to prevent rock chips. Hmm. Looks like it
can come off easily, and since it's clear there doesn't seem to be any
effect on the paint color (black). Both front and rear bumpers are
faded, and the top portions of the front bumper are starting to fail
paint-wise, which is not surprising and something commonly seen on these

isn't broken, which is good.

As mentioned previously, both front and rear bumpers need repaint. Side
lower trim panels look a little flat as well, but that may be me. It's
possible a hard core Martha session could bring them back.

All in all, a definitely contender for addition to the fleet.

He's been asking $4500 or best offer and has had no takers, for that
matter, no one else has looked at the car. It's a $3500 car in this
market, which I may offer him once I see the other car in Orlando later
today if my plans work out. He and the wife are leaving on one of those
European river cruises this Wednesday and will be gone for a couple of
weeks, so if I can't work something out before that I'll have to keep
searching if I'm interested. If I do follow through, I'm thinking having
$3500 cash in hand before popping off to Europe might be some incentive,
but it's clear this guy has a LOT of money, so that might not be a big
motivation.

We'll see.

It has a rear sun shade that's not working - no biggie, easy fix. It also has

Re: [MBZ] Potential poos car

2015-03-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Looked at a 1999 S320 this morning in Sarasota. Former diplomatic corps
retiree with more money than he knows what to do with. Long time MB owner,
first one was a new 1979 300D he did through diplomatic program with European
delivery. His wife just bought a Maserati convertible for a "fun" car. Go
figure.

Anyway, car has 154k on it, second owner (not first as he said in the ad), a
CPO car when he bought it in Alexandria, VA from the MB dealer there. 3000
mile oil changes, all service done by the dealer with documentation, good
mechanicals, pretty decent cosmetics, everything works.

The car was amazingly peppy for a six in a W140 chassis, as we took it out on
the interstate and I really put my foot into it. Certainly not the
neck-snapping response you get from the M119, but still pretty good considering
the significantly smaller engine with the same amount of iron behind it and the
AC running full blast.

It's got some sort of 3M clear film on the nose and hood that was installed by
the VA dealer to prevent rock chips. Hmm. Looks like it can come off easily,
and since it's clear there doesn't seem to be any effect on the paint color
(black). Both front and rear bumpers are faded, and the top portions of the
front bumper are starting to fail paint-wise, which is not surprising and
something commonly seen on these cars, especially down here. Engine
compartment was clean and everything was intact and in place. Looks like it
might need motor mounts, but there wasn't a noticeable amount of vibration in
the passenger compartment. They just looked collapsed.

Bottom of the car and wheel wells were clean with no signs of rust. Some minor
surface rust on some of the front suspension components, but nothing of
significance. Good tires ("It's always had Michelins!") but dirty wheels.
Lots of brake pad present. Trunk is clean and all the things you would expect
are in it, including an MB cover for the car. No signs of water or other
nastiness. 1.5 year old MB battery.

Interior leather had some overall wear but no rips, tears or breakdown,
especially on the driver's side bolster. All the interior bits work, including
sunroof, seats and instrumentation. Original Becker with trunk mounted CD
changer. AC worked and showed no error codes in diagnostics, and was ICE COLD
during our drive with an ambient of about 85F. Carpets are clean and pretty
much unworn. Headliner is clean and intact.

Negatives:

Driver's side rear door has ding in front of door handle where someone nailed
them in a parking lot with a car door or something. Not something the
paintless dent guys could fix, I think, but I'm not sure. Paint isn't broken,
which is good.

As mentioned previously, both front and rear bumpers need repaint. Side lower
trim panels look a little flat as well, but that may be me. It's possible a
hard core Martha session could bring them back.

All in all, a definitely contender for addition to the fleet.

Wilton, I really enjoy the stories you post. In my experience it's
rare for a person with a technical background to write so well. And I
like the subjects you choose - real work rather than just some artsy
impressionist stuff.

I can relate to those old farming ways. My grandfather's Ozark farm
had one of the corn shellers you describe mounted next to the corn crib
along with a hand operated burr disk apparatus.

One of the places I bought here in WV came with a barn collapsed on a
seed grain cleaner the size of a VW beetle. It blew air via a hand
cranked paddle wheel across a system of moving screens. There were tongue
and groove tight bins for the grain. This was on the second floor, above a
scale that weighed wagons. Further down the road was a threshing machine
in its own collapsed shed with an iron wheeled Fordson tractor rusting
next to it. When the neighbor who wanted the tractor pulled it out only
the top two thirds of the wheels were left and he had to skid it onto his
trailer. I saved the threshing machine for years for a fellow from the
Waynesburg PA historical society only to find he had died and no one else
was interested. It is pretty much melted away now.

On another subject, I have an interest you might want to write on. I
have heard bomber pilots are a superstitious group. Not wanting their
pictures taken and that sort of thing. Did you B52 guys in Vietnam have
superstitions?
