Re: [MBZ] Project anyone?

2016-01-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The Sami had a 1.3l of some 66hp. They make a good base because of the solid
front axle. Vitaras got stuck with IFS which makes them much better onroad but
limits you offroad unless you're willing to swap in a solid axle. The Vitara is
also wider which is nice.My Jetta TDI makes 90hp but a lot more torque than the
Sami in about the same size package. Kits are available to put it into either
the Sami or the Vitara. If I did so I'd chip it and use larger injectors aiming
for around 130hp. I haven't wanted to do that in the Jetta as it'd be hard on
the clutch.

The auto auction uses a fleet of viteras to run around on the lot,
jump cars, etc.  They are very good for that and lightweight offroad.
My cousin had a suz samurai in the 80s and he drove it hunting in the
mountains and was quite happy with it except to get to the other side
of the island (200-250 mile RT) had the little engine screaming all
the time.  (I am sure it was louder than a 123 240D!)

This car had a Cadillac 390 V8 coupled to a unique TurboHydramatic slushbox
known as a “Jetaway 200”. It actually got pretty good mileage, into the high
teens on the highway.

[MBZ] OT landline telephone recommendation needed: answering/wireless/handsets + headset/speakerphones

2016-01-18 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I'll bet someone on this list has figured out the solution I'm looking for.

SWMBO loves to be wireless and hands-free while talking on our home phone.

Our current phone is a Motorola L903, which comes with a nice small light
wireless headset that can be used to either pick-up a call or switch a call
from the wireless handset over to the headset.

http://www.motorola.com/us/cordless-phones/L903-DECT-6.0-Digital-Cordless-Phone-and-Headset-with-Answering-System/72825.html

SWMBO loves this little headset, but it is now cracked and the battery is
getting weak. Replacing the battery looks like an ordeal - I took a peek
this morning. I can't find a part number or way to buy just the
replacement headset.

The ideal home phone system would have a base unit with incorporated
answering machine, at least two wireless handsets (DECT 6.0) that have a
nice speakerphone feature, and some form of wireless headset.

Does anyone know of a base unit phone that can connect to a Bluetooth
headset? That would allow us to pick a separate headset, replace as
needed, find a model that she likes (lightweight, good sound clarity,
decent battery life).

One solution I found on Amazon is a base station that can be paired with a
Bluetooth headset, and added to existing phone system (just plug into a
free phone jack), but the two that I looked at have very poor reviews.

Re: [MBZ] OT landline telephone recommendation needed: answering/wireless/handsets + headset/speakerphones

2016-01-18 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

Can't help with the base, but as for the BT headset, Blue Parrot is
the way to go. I use the BT-XT250, but with a new base unit, you
should be able to use the XT350. B Photo in NY generally has the
best price delivered.

Blue Parrot headsets are made to cancel out the noise in truck cabs,
and thus work great in any situation. Unlike the over the ear BT
things where the other party hears everything they say echoed back by
the over ear POS thing, with the Blue Parrot there is NO feedback to
the caller. Callers believe you are in a professional office talking
on a landline (until the wireless carrier drops the call) I put in
roughly 3500 min/month for years in my 300SDL "Office" and unless I
told them I was driving, nobody was the wiser because the headset
works so well.

[MBZ] Spring Cleaning

2016-01-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Yeah, I know it’s still winter for everyone for the most part, even us. It was
in the high 30s this morning when I got up! That’s damned cold for this part
of Florida!

Anyway, with the Federal holiday, I decided to take some time and clean out
some closets to make some room for stuff. My major undertaking was to get rid
of all the old paper records we have been carting around with us for years,
some of them going back to the late 1990s. I checked the IRS regulations and
see they say 3 years is all you need, so I”m going through boxes and files with
a vengeance. Now if someone would only have one of those free document
shredding days soon…

Anyway, I found some good MB stuff while I was sifting through all of this.
Some good electrical diagrams for W123 models and an 8 CD set of European EPC
data, which could be helpful for older cars. A few more hours and I’ll be done
with this and can look at the MB stuff closer to see exactly what I have. If
it’s of value I’ll post it up here for anyone who might need or want it.

Going to take a break around 3:00 and go over to a friend’s house to
troubleshoot his kiln for him. Seems that half of the elements in it aren’t
working, so he can’t get it up to temperature to fire. Should be pretty
simple…certainly easier to work on than a car.

It's probably been 25 years since I bought the gauge, so my
memory of $20 may be wrong. And I can't find the same thing
now. The bubble and knob are like this one
http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Economy-Caster-Camber-Gauge,2699.html

but the one I have has a long beam so it spans from rim bead
to rim bead.

The description of this one seems likely, but I can't get a
photo to load.
https://lmr.com/item/MM-MMT3/Maximum-Motorsports-Camber-Gauge

All the others I'm seeing are digital or a curved spirit
level element. Mine uses a plain bubble and a knob. Using
it requires counting 1/8 turns of the knob - which is why it
has eight lines on the knob face.

I think the Speedway gauge would do as well, and maybe easier
if there are magnets in the end of the posts. Mine is not
magnetic.

Camber is read directly. Caster involves turning the wheel
+-20 degrees and measuring the difference in the camber.
That is the main reason for the turn plates.

Aren't the 6.5s known for having weak injection pumps? A friend had one and
seemed like he was putting an injection pump on every 100,000 miles or so.
Doesn't get the mileage of the 6.2 either.
I wouldn't mind having a 4BT in and older truck either. Some years ago I
remember seeing a place that was rebuilding M37s with a 4BT that made IIRC
130HP but who knows how much torque. They claimed they could make more power if
the customer wanted but that it was plenty...

The 6.5 has an electronic controlled injection pump, one
turbo on a "V" engine, and isn't as simple as the 6.2 - but
it sure has more power!

I haven't noticed any noise from the rear bearings, it must be just
starting. What symptoms should I look for? Would the wheel have some play
in it due to the bearing?
Thanks.
Ralph '87 300sdl

Aha! Now I suspect the diagnosis. Generally you hear a rear axle
bearing long before you detect excess play.

Bearing play would show up side to side or up and down.

Check the lca bushings. Check that the bolt in the end of the axle,
or the nut on the end of the axle is tight. I think the nut is 30mm
12 point, but 1 1/4 12 pt works. Bolt has a 13mm head. 123 is bolt,
124 is nut, but I don't remember what 126 gen II has but I think it
is the bolt.

You might want to take it to a good independent MB shop for a second
opinion if you can't find the play.

Push/pull the car sideways at the rear wheels and look/listen for play.

Or there is a crack in the head that allows the oil galley to flow
into the exhaust port. I am trying to determine the source of the
oil rather than throw parts at it.

The engine sounded good, and there was no excessive smoking, so I
don't think it is a bad cyl. That leaves the head and the turbo as
suspects. If I can isolate the oil supply for the turbo, than I can
determine if it is a really bad or missing turbo seal or if it is a
bad engine.

I had a real conventional phone line for a year.
When we'd have a power failure the phone and uVerse would go down a few hours
later.
Then they'd put a portable generator on the neighborhood digital switch and the
uVerse would come back on, then after the power came back on the phone would
start working, except for the time we had to call ATT and make them fix the
phone half a day after the power came back.

Curly, can you detect any radial play in the turbo front inlet? It
should have almost no play that you can detect.

Test: remove the cross-over pipe, start the engine. If the seals

On a serious note, I'm sure voter fraud varies greatly by region.

Rather than wreck the turbo by running it even a few seconds with no
oil, just disconnect the downpipe behind the turbo. Oil there is from
the turbo, it gets burned if it goes into the intake.

To check the front side, pull the intake hose loose from the turbo.
Oil on the blades, unless you have terrific blowby, means it's leaking
out the front.

If you have more than 50,000 miles on the turbo since the last
rebuild, chances are you are blowing quite a bit of oil through both
sides.

Re: [MBZ] OT landline telephone recommendation needed: answering/wireless/handsets + headset/speakerphones

2016-01-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Thats not really a land line though, if your internet is down you're outta luck.
The reason I've kept my "real" landline is that the phone companies are
required to keep a dialtone something like 95 percent of the time while
internet and cell companies have no such requirements. That said I've had so
few failures I don't see my backup plan being worth it and really I was keeping
it for use not when we're in trouble but the in-laws and other family. We're
pretty self sufficient should trouble arise...

You should be able to carry their dsl and not have land line. If you want a
land line and keep your number buy Ooma at Walmart or Amazon. You just plug it
into your router, plug a phone into it or run a phone cord from the device and
a phone outlet in your house and it wil run all outlets in your house. Then
port your number over to Ooma.

Re: [MBZ] Testing turbo oil seals

2016-01-18 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
If it wasn't smoking, it's not going through the combustion chambers
at that rate.

Take off the downpipe and check for oil, if you have oil there take
the turbo to a diesel shop and have them check for excessive leakage.

Or you can remove the crossover pipe -- if there is oil slinging out
at idle, it's leaking at the turbo.

And pull the pipe between the air intake and valve cover and see what
comes out of that, if you bent a rod from hydrolocking, there will be
PLENTY of blowby

2016-01-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Meaning you can't give up your landline without giving up DSL?
Might be worth seeing if somebody like DSL Extreme could hook you up with DSL
outside of AT Thats what we've got, its a couple bucks more expensive than
Verizon who actually services the line but when I have problems DSL Extreme
gets on it quick and if line work is needed they pester Verizon and it gets
fixed quick.
I think 2016 is the year I dump our landline, we almost never use it and 99% of
the incoming calls are telemarketers. I could surely use that $30/mo for
something else.

I probably could, but with losing the AT bundle discount I'd not save any
money. I'll check on DSL Extreme.

Republic wireless does look tempting, but won't work unless we make some

Re: [MBZ] Testing turbo oil seals

2016-01-18 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
Rather than wreck the turbo by running it even a few seconds with no
oil, just disconnect the downpipe behind the turbo. Oil there is
from the turbo, it gets burned if it goes into the intake.

To check the front side, pull the intake hose loose from the turbo.
Oil on the blades, unless you have terrific blowby, means it's
leaking out the front.

If you have more than 50,000 miles on the turbo since the last
rebuild, chances are you are blowing quite a bit of oil through both
sides.

Peter

___

Thanks Peter,

It is a rebuilt turbo. 0 miles. New head gasket. 0 miles on head
gasket. It pumped out 4-5 quarts of oil in 5-10 min of idling after
startup. I had my head under the hood checking out things, so did
not notice oil running out under and behind the car. No excessive
smoke. The car was smoking before the work. Headgasket was blown at
#1.

Therefore, the oil may be coming out of the head, or maybe I got a bad turbo.

I can take out the turbo and run the engine if I can plug off the oil
line port. It is 16 x 1.25 nut thread, double flare. If the engine
holds its oil without the turbo, then the turbo is bad. If the
engine pumps oil out the exhaust, then the engine is bad.

[MBZ] Anyone Need Memory or an SSD?

2016-01-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I have a couple of failed Crucial brand DIMMs in my Mac Pro. When I went to
Crucial to have them replaced, they couldn’t do it, as the DIMMs were end of
life and they no longer make a replacement.

They offered me $122.00 credit through their online store, which doesn’t do me
a lot of good relative to replacing the failed RAM for my Mac Pro.

If someone want to offer me $100.00 for the $122.00 store credit, I’ll do it.
That way I can just take the proceeds and buy some new RAM from another
supplier, like OWC, who will have the stuff five years from now if I need it….
