If you peal back the onion you will find that John Kasich was responsible
for much of that prosperity and for balancing the budget. Ask someone who

[MBZ] OT: Another truism

2016-06-11 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

See attached photo.
Oh so true. Big uproar over one. BIG silence over the other.

Double standard? Hypocrites? Why the disparity?

so all the west coast and it seems a good part of the country is all
atwitter that this stanford kid got a light sentence.

Meanwhile, a serial rapist walks free, delivering "speeches" so
memorable nobody records them, and rakes in millions for selling state
secrets, with his dear wifey, hands out millions of taxpayer dollars, of
which about 30% are paid to him, and outside of a couple guys on the
radio, nothing is said. No demand that he be prosecuted from the
"caring" public, no arrest, nobody atwitter, only crickets.

You can turn off the micafone in the setup menu, I did that.

The instructions (and the other user "manual") alludes to the GPS input
but no details on how it might work.

The keep back 500ft from dumb trucks is BS, has no liability protection.

It's your decision. From my recent experience.. I suggest you take extra

Should have had this in SWMBO's car last night. If we like it, I'll
probably get a second for The White Whale.

Called The Authorities today about the damage from the truck's load raining
onto the car, and basically we are up the creek as far as pursing a police
report and insurance claim. The officer I spoke with this afternoon said
the best thing would be to see if DMV will run the license and provide the
registered owner, then pursue them in small claims court. He said some
trucking companies (especially the local guys) will settle immediately and
write a check, but that is not too common.

The State Police have an automatic license plate reader system, that may
have captured the trucks plates / time / location, so if we can get that
record, more evidence for a court case. State DOT also has various traffic
cams around, they may have footage as well. Would be nice to show our car
in position behind the truck with turn signal on trying to get out and pass
but being blocked and held in place behind the truck by heavy traffic in
the right lane.

Today I was driving on I-95 in SC and NC and there were 3 or 4
incidents where I am tooling along in the left lane at 75, passing a
truck or something, and some car comes up VERY fast behind me and gets
right on my bumper until I complete my pass and move over. Also a
couple where I have moved left to pass, one comes up fast behind me,
switches to the right lane and passes me then cuts right () in
front of me to pass the other vehicle too, speeds of 75-80. That
scared me more than the idiot riding my bumper as one small swipe on
my RF fender would send us both cartwheeling and likely kill us and
whoever else happens to be in the vicinity. I had the cam running, I
should probably download the trip just to have that to review. That
was some scary times.

Re: [MBZ] template for Grant's popos to follow

2016-06-11 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Well.. I just had dinner with my lawyer best buddy. We explored what legal
device could defeat all of those "ism" claims and came up with a simple but
elegant legal move.

To date "Idiot", under applicable laws has not been declared a "Race" or a
"gender" and "equally applies to all skin colors..

So it was mutually agreed that all offending parties could be called
"Idiot" without incurring legal issues.

I'll put it out for a vote.. what say you?

Re: [MBZ] Sand blasting

2016-06-11 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Same here, open truck loads are supposed to be covered with a tarp. The law
was pass ten or more years ago. SWMBO is convinced this driver was sand
blasting her on purpose, as he passed her and then the attack began, and she
was trapped by heavy traffic and couldn't move into the left lane to pass.
Apparently she didn't consider or didn't feel safe slowing down to let the
truck pull away.

Any caveats to be aware of using a “test” refrigerant?

My biggest complaint at present is the system has been converted to R134a
and performs OK at speed, but if you come to a stop and are idling it’s
not efficient and the vent temperatures drop off noticeably. The system is
charged with the correct amount of R134a and the pressures are correct for
that refrigerant. Personally, I don’t think the (original) condenser is
big enough or the correct type for the system.

Here, all dump truck loads must be tarp covered. Most of them now have
signs on the back that say "Stay back 500 ft." also.

Arizona used to be the land of construction [pre 2008 housing crash] and
held the record for broken windshields and damage from debris blowing /
falling off trucks. Laws were passed.

2016-06-11 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Reading the Enviro-Safe instructions, looks like a smaller charge is
required compared to R134a. I'd go slow with charging, measuring the vent
temperatures, until I was getting about 40 deg F or so (but don't go too
much lower or risk freezing up the evaporator).

I've got a few cans that I plan to install in The White Whale, just need to
get a round tuit and I'll be all set.

[MBZ] Alternative Refrigerants?

2016-06-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Considering changing the 350SDL over to a hydrocarbon refrigerant. Freeze 12
apparently is no longer made or available. Enviro-Safe looks to be the main
contender in the market. Are there others?

Any caveats to be aware of using a “test” refrigerant?

My biggest complaint at present is the system has been converted to R134a and
performs OK at speed, but if you come to a stop and are idling it’s not
efficient and the vent temperatures drop off noticeably. The system is charged
with the correct amount of R134a and the pressures are correct for that
refrigerant. Personally, I don’t think the (original) condenser is big enough
or the correct type for the system.

?

Inside Higher Education reported

that Laureate Education paid Bill Clinton an obscene $16.5 million
between 2010 and 2014 to serve as an honorary chancellor for Laureate
International Universities. While Bill Clinton worked as the group’s
pitchman, the State Department funneled $55 million to Laureate when
Hillary Clinton was secretary of state. That would seem a pretty major
story but virtually no mainstream media outlet has reported it while
running hundreds of stories on the Trump University scandal.

Bloomberg backs up the 16.5 mil payments to Bill Clinton.

How about leasing a car while in a residency?
Why would a resident need to keep up appearances?

Re: [MBZ] OT knead sum advise

2016-06-11 Thread Joel Cairo via Mercedes
You are pretty much correct but this is his deal now so he can figure it
out. The key issue is he just doesn't want to screw with a car so
something newer will probably be less of a headache. One hopes.

Interestingly enough residents' salaries are pretty decent now (as
opposed to when my wife went through that), and he lives pretty cheaply
so he has run the numbers for what he is comfortable with and continues
to be focused on paying down his loans so that is good.

No way would I put someone on a resident salary or paying medical

under the mandatory educational debt is hard enough without adding
gratuitous debt unnecessarily, especially if he sets up shop in any

Re: [MBZ] 1990 300D - SOLD!

2016-06-11 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Thanks, Kevin.

I don’t think it would have been a money pit, per se, as most of what it needed
was little stuff. Granted, the little stuff can add up quickly, but to sort
out the windows, radio and seat adjusters would have probably taken a couple
hundred bucks, tops.

I was more concerned about the integrity of the engine. It was wonky enough as
far as the cooling system and things that were going on there that I had no
confidence whatsoever in its longevity. Since I was looking for something I
could sort out and give to my oldest son for reliable transportation I just
wasn’t comfortable in that regard, so I felt it was best to pass it along to
the next owner.

Maybe it is fine, maybe not. I didn’t want to roll the dice to find out. Had
I not been in a hurry and done my due diligence when I inspected the car I
wouldn’t have bought it in the first place. Hence, lesson learned.

I've been a doctor for about 18 years now and I drove a Volvo 240 wagon
for

the first few years, and an 85 300td since then. Paid cash for both of
them. Not sure which was the better car, actually.

No way would I put someone on a resident salary or paying medical school
tuition into a car payment. That's unwise. Getting out from under the
mandatory educational debt is hard enough without adding gratuitous debt
unnecessarily, especially if he sets up shop in any major metro area
eventually. Save the cash for a condo or house downpayment, and buy him a
lightly used plain jane Nissan sentra with a 5 speed.

Sold the 1990 300D. Just too many questions regarding the integrity of the
engine. Bought for $650, put oil, filter and fuel filters on it, sold it for
$800 to the first CL buyer who showed up.

Can’t say I made money, but I probably broke even. Lesson learned. Just glad
I was able to get rid of it.

I’m done with project cars for the oldest boy for now. Going to focus on some
stuff with the 350SDL before I take on any (new) major projects.

With car-part.com you can often get a starter or alt for close to the
u-pull price, but don't need to waste your time and the part is
delivered to your door. Since for your plan you will need a starter
anyway, if the original can't be resurrected, you will need another starter.

That's a thought. I'm thinking about a visit to local LKQ to see if I can
get a compatible starter, which I could then keep as a spare.

Long term plan for the engine / drivetrain is transplant into a '95 124
wagon, replacing the gasser with a real engine.

I'm going to try Kaleb's idea first, and try jumping it directly from the
battery, see if it will spin with no solenoid engagement and then see if
12.5 VDC directly to the solenoid will kick it over.

If that fails, then I'll pull the starter, take it apart and see what's
going on. Maybe it can be revived.
