[MBZ] More on FCP Euro Parts CJQeQdN32u

2016-09-01 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
I still haven't done the flex disks on my 126 300SD, in part because I
needed the center bearing parts.

I ordered these parts from FCP Euro and here's what I got:

* The bearing is FAG (Korea) which is good stuff IMO

* The driveshaft boot is Rein (as listed on the FCP site) made in
Italy, looks OK but not a critical part

I ordered two driveshaft supports because I was unsure of the quality:

* The Rein part came in a box marked made in India, 2015. The rubber
is stamped with the old MBZ part number (126 410 0181) where something else
appears to have been ground off. The flat rubber face appears to have
surface cracks and the rubber feels "dry." This one was about $10.

* The Meyle part came in a bag with a Made in China sticker. But the
rubber is stamped MEYLE-Germany and it is stamped with the new part number
(014 041 0042). It appears to have some kind of coating (paint?) on the
flat rubber surface. It too has "surface cracks" which appear to be only in
the coating and the rubber feels more "live" under the coating. This one
was about $20.

I'm inclined to go with the Meyle part at this point. Or maybe I should get
OE for about $100?

[MBZ] DIY Wuz: Brakes! Brakes!

2016-09-01 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I have a couple places I will let touch the air cond. I let certain
shops do alignment, and I let tar shops mount and balance tars.

Last set of tars, they screwed up the TPM so it leaked. I took it back,
they said it didn't leak. I took it back again and that time they
finally took the tire off and told me I had a bad TPM. They told me it
had been installed wrong. (crossthreaded) When I pointed out it was
the only one they had replaced, they ate it. Good thing, because
otherwise, I'd have made them eat it one way or another..

I don't know how many engines I have seen that never had the oil filter
changed even though the owner was charged for the filter and changing
it. In the OM621 and 615, they'd throw away the main filter always and
change the cartridge sometimes. Without the main filter, the oil didn't
go through the cartridge. Effectively, there was no filter.

Nice!

Glad you and your are here to relate the tale. Another reason why I
prefer to do stuff like brakes myself. I thought I was getting to old
for this stuff too, but decided I can't afford the alternatives.

So, I bought a dewalt battry op rattle wrench. The first job I applied
it to, taking wheels off a junk car, completely overwhelmed it. But it
turned out that with me standing on the 18" breaker bar, and jumping on
the breaker bar would not work either. I did get 10 of the bolts loose
by beating on the handle of the breaker bar with a 2 lb LFH as hard as I
could. About 20 to 40 whacks with this "impact wrench" would break
loose a lug bolt. Well over 300 Ft Lb. It woulda stripped any rice
burner lug nut. (or merkun) However with several other jobs since then
where bolts are near the torque spec, the thing works a charm. I love
it. It works better than any of the air rattle renches I have had, and
is no where near as temperamental. (and does not require oil in the
air hose end.

Had an interesting morning on tuesday.

Tuesday is take-my-granddaughter-to-breakfast day and we were in
traffic, going by the rehab hospital when the traffic stopped for a
red light.

Why are we not slowing down, SH*T no brakes! Managed to avoid the car
in front by swerving into the gutter and stomping on the (Bloody
Awkward) emergency brake and stopped. Whew.

With almost no brake fluid and only minimal rear braking, crept to
NAPA for juice and slowly down the street to breakfast. Crept home again.

The people that I normally use to do the repairs that I don't want to
do recently replaced the passenger caliper, both disks and pads in the
front.

It appears that the mechanic (moron) who replaced the caliper,
unscrewed the unit from the hose and re-threaded the new caliper onto
the old hose.

Then twisted the caliper to fit against the mounting lugs. This left a
curl in the hose that rubbed against the tyre, and, e viola, no
F**G brakes!

They will get a present of the hose from me as a learning aid. New
hoses installed by Fred.

I got hosed, even though it was suggested that a new pair of hoses
would be a good idea.

I'm getting too old for this sh*t.

2016-09-01 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Since mine is already off the rim I intended to shoot it in through the gap
using the tire stem hole as the relief. When you get tires filled they drill a
hole opposite the valve stem for a release.
I saw one guy who stuffed foam pieces into the tire before shooting foam in so
he wouldn't have to use so much. I was thinking that might work better since
the open cell foam would have some give.
My thought is I don't have anything to lose, the tires are already showing
signs of splitting. The old tires work better than the new ones although the
tubes are so bad they bled slime the last time I tried to use them, they'd hold
air for about an hour at a time...

I've gone through this with the little trailer at camp. Its hauled a bunch of
gravel, rocks, mulch, firewood, etc and the original tires rotted away after
maybe 25-30 years. Got some replacements at Harbor Freight which lasted about 3
years.
I bought some solid tires at Harbor Freight which turned out to be wheelbarrow
wheels that didn't fit for a variety of reasons.
There are some videos of folks on Youtube filling their offroad trailer tires
with spray foam, the Great Stuff that you buy at the hardware store. They claim
it works great. Then you Google it and theres plenty that say it won't work

Subject: [MBZ] OT little trailer tar

I have this little trailer that goes behind the yard tractor/mower.  It
has maybe 8" wheels on it.  One of them went flat, it is tubeless.  The
tire is completely detached from the rim, not sure it even has a bead to
seat like a car tar.  I don't think it is punctured, at least I can't
see/feel anything but who knows (Mercedes content -- a tar on wifey's ML
had a puncture from a thorn!  A wood thorn!).

I was trying to figure out how to get it reseated on the rim and then
inflated, it doesn't look particularly easy to do that. Maybe I can use
the strap trick and try to get it seated?  Any other ideas?  I don't
think the lighter fluid trick will work as there is not enough seated on
there unless the strap works.

Re: [MBZ] OT I'm seeing Snook in this ABqeoUtU6E

2016-09-01 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
If you recall, your indie had a really nice 300SEL for sale last year that he
wanted too much for.

The W126 with the 3.0 liter inline six is underpowered, but it’s still a nice
car. The reason I like them is that the W126 V8s are so tight and difficult to
work on I would gladly sacrifice horsepower for serviceability. The LWB models
are appointed better than the regular length models, too. The 300SE was like a
300E 2.6 - an entry level car that had a lot of options either unavailable or
deleted.

As for your head gasket, I’m betting the engine had about 150k on the clock.
Every M103 engine will need a head gasket between 150k-175k like clockwork.
Valve guides, too.

I have driven the W140s with the 3.2 liter six, and they are amazingly quick.
I drove one las year and had it out on the interstate with AC and everything
else on, and it had no problem standing on its’ hind legs and getting out in
front of traffic. That did convince me that I could own/drive a six cylinder
W140 at the time. Those engines are pretty robust and the amount of space in
the engine compartment makes things a lot easier when it comes to service.

I am firmly in the diesel camp any more, but if I had to buy a gasser I would
probably lean towards a late 90s S320 for ease of service. Yes, the W140
chassis is pretty damned complex, but at least by going with a 97 or later
you’re avoiding a lot of the known weaknesses of the chassis.

Early M180 engines used two solex 2 barrel carbs, Primary and
secondary. Much better over the long haul than the zeniths. no
warping problems.

M120 engines used Solex

The BMW R90S used Del Orto accelerator pump carbs rather then Bings. I
always wanted to find a set cheap and try them on my R75/5. I was never
a fan of the Big vacuum carbs. I tolerate them, but never been a fan.
I AM a fan of the cable slide Bings used on older/smaller BMWs. My
R50/2 would ALWAYS start! Magneto and cable slide Bings.

Never been a fan of carters. I can tolerate Holley 4 bbl. They are
fairly easy to tune.

Yep, I still dislike vergassers. GIve me a good OM engine any day!

I don't know about MORE cars, maybe different cars. I have too many as it is.

2001 BMW 740iL Sport 130K (likely for sale soon)
2000 BMW 740iL 232K (Daily Driver, I love the car, but some of the issues are
starting to add up, but we take a long road trip almost monthly to Ardmore and
back and it runs great!)
1992 Ford F-150 XLT 147K

Wife's car
2006 Cadillac SRX 125K (she says she is driving it until the wheels fall off
and then wants a Two-Seater)

Step-daughters new to her car
2005 Cadillac STS 175K

[MBZ] OT little trailer tar

2016-09-01 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

I'm sure I would fit, but probably not comfortably. I loved my 124 in terms of
size if I was by myself. The problem was if I had passsengers. Those rear
seats aren't very roomy especially when compared to a LWB 126 or a LWB BMW 7
series. We make a lot of trips down to Southern Oklahoma (Ardmore) and if we
have 4 or 5 people, the BMW still has lots of room for the kids to stretch out.
But that 190 is tempting because I think it would be pretty zippy and would
certainly get great mileage.

190Ds are fun but I don't think a Snook would fit well in one. IIRC he
complained about a 124 being small.

I'm not seeing the problem with the car other than the driver's seat should be
restuffed, or foamed or whatever it needs. There isn't much information about

So the guy took the car as a $4k value. He got screwed. PO probably changed
out the seat covers with something cheap and got an Earl Scheib
respray. Might be worth $2k or might be worth $500 depending on what's
on the seats and under the paint.

you can include me in the anti-1992 up MB list with Dan and Kleb. I
have deliberately avoided these newer cars.

But I will admit in 7-14 years, or whenever they get cheap, I might be
interested in the Metris (Vito) van as a replacement for Dogde. I
suspect though, that I will probably stick with Dogde.

123 LUST:
Yesterday I had to go ~60 miles to pick up a lathe. On the way, I
went past an auction. On the way back, I stopped to see what was
selling. In the parking rows, I saw a pretty decent (100 yard) 123.
It was a late model 300D and looked pretty well preserved. However
some rust was beginning to show, but still for a 31+ year old car, it
looked pretty good.

About 10 yrs ago, I was gonna dump the 240Ds to go with more modern
stuff. But as I thought about it, the plan is to hang out winters in
a warm place, then hang out summers as a Yuper. In either case, other
than the trek from north to south and vice versa (likely made in the
van to haul stuff) the only need for wheels is to drive to town (N) or
odd jobs, or to drive around town(S) with an occasional trip of ~125
mi R/T. Add to that something that won't depreciate, and something
that can sit in a garage for up to 9 months at a time, and the
ironhead DIesels stand out. The 240D is adequate for a 25 to 75 mile
radius, so it made sense to keep them. The white one is destined for
S and the 81 is destined for N. 240Ds are simpler and easier to work
on than even a 123 300D. The Quantum also did well sitting for 1-2
years at a time, then firing up and running all over the country, as
did the Escort Diesel. But Quantums and Escorts are pretty much
extinct. That leaves the 240Ds as "Ideal" for this use.

Re: [MBZ] I blame Poos

2016-09-01 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Lots of rain yesterday ahead of the storm.

Today it’s quiet so far, but the rain bands will start to come in from offshore
in a couple of hours - that’s when the fun begins with tropical storm force
winds and heavy rain alternating with clear and sunny skies. This is a weird
thing that occurs with tropical storms/hurricanes.

Pretty much a non-event for most of us, but for those in low lying areas there
will be some flooding.

The County and schools all freaked out and closed today, which means a paid
holiday for me. If I can swing it, I’m going to go look at the 1985 300SD that
I posted about earlier in the week. I’ve been stringing the seller along for
about a week to feign indifference so I can lowball him if it’s a decent deal.
My seat cover guy says he’s got a full set of Palomino interior covers for the
car, so that’s good.

And of course the 94 S420 from hell acted up again yesterday. Guess what? The
wipers stopped working. Fortunately this is a known issue on W140s with a
relay module that gets crudded up and needs the solder reflowed. What a PITA.

I really need to look at that W126.
