I have not had a chance to tell the tale of the selling of my ML which 
I immediately regretted due to selling it way way way too cheap. 
Anyway this guy bugs the crap out of me wanting to look at it. I talk 
to him on the phone and answer his questions. He wanted to know if it 
had 2 sets of keys and owners manual. He also wanted the vin to run a 
carfax. The truck had a cracked from bumper due to neighbors cow 
running into it. No police or insurance involved. So he shows up and 
starts looking it over. Then said he pulled autocheck which shows the 
bumper shows as wrecked. I pull out my phone and run a carfax which 
shows clean and explained how it would be impossible for the cow 
damage to show up. Probably a ploy to get me to sell it even cheaper. 
Guy turns out to be a dealer and was talking dealer talk about 
auctions etc to which I responded with dealer talk as well. He low 
balls me on my already way way way too cheap price to which I tell him 
I am firm and he can take it or leave it. I ended up knocking $100 off 
just so I did not have to deal with any further idols. His big concern 
was the cd changer was missing the magazine and kept asking if I had 
one. I had several 140s and 124s out back and he said surely they have 
one, he has never seen an s class that didn't. I told him I did not 
have a spare one to give him. Later on I am showing him around and 
looking at cars and as we are looking he keeps opening the trunks 
probably looking to see if I have a changed magazine. Kind of annoyed 
me. He finally pays and leaves. Now keep in mind I just put a brand 
new set of Michelins on it as well as brand new ac with new Denso 
compressor. Probably close in value to what I sold it for. When I did 
the work I figured people would appreciate and recognize a well 
properly maintained vehicle bit I guess the M class crowd is just 
looking for a cheap car. I probably should have pulled the tires off 
and Put the old work out tires back on. So anyway a couple of days ago 
the guy calls up saying it runs and drives great but has the most 
uncomfortable seats in and ML he has ever had, said somebody but have 
replaced the padding with something else. Was also complaining about 
the way it steered around corners. He then wanted me to send him 
receipts for the tires and ac work. I told him if I ran across them I 
would send them to him.

When I was there in the 60s, There was still quite a bit of social and 
economic fallout.  Other than the royals, most people had pretty limited 
means.  I lived with a family with 6 other kids.  It was what we'd call 
a 2 BR townhouse. I slept in the LR.  It was maybe 9 x 12.  There was a 
couch and a chair and a tv in the room.  Most homes were heated with 
lump coal in open fireplaces.  We spent most of our time outside.   They 
took me to a WWII airfield for the 4th of July.  It was Burton Wood.  At 
the time, USAF was still there.  One of the neighbors.Mrs, McIntyre, 
told me they could tell the difference between the German planes and the 
Brit/Merkun planes.  The DB engines ran at a significantly higher RPM, 
so the sound was higher pitched.


Mind you, we were in the North of England, and near Wales for 6 weeks.   
There were far more scars closer to London, although scars were fixed or 
overgrown faster as you neared London In some ways, it seemed like I was 
reliving the 30s.  Most cars were 30s designs, there were no coil 
collectors, so I could find pennies and other coins going back into the 
1800s.  That helped me to learn the sequence of kings after Vickie and 
before Liz.   Riding the bisses around was fun.  6 or 8 cents would get 
us nearly anywhere we wanted to go.  For a trip to wales and to Burton 
Wood, we were able to go by car.  My host family' father ran a "school 
of motoring" so he had access to cars.


The family house was pretty near identical to where RIngo Starr grew 
up.  I was able to see his house, but not the homes of John Paul or George.

Yeah, the wife was watching that. She’s a Father Brown fan.

I really like these shows, not so much for the content but the 
historical perspective. I knew little or nothing about the UK from the 
end of WWII to maybe the 60s-70s, and have found them pretty 
fascinating for their treatment of the historical part of the stories.


I had no idea that WWII did such a number on their society and 
economy. I mean, I knew it was bad, but I never knew any of the details.

I made some good friends in England when the companies I worked for had 
offices there.  Wife and daughter and I went over for a visit a few 
years later, stayed with some of them here and there. One lived in 
London proper, in this area that had all these townhouse kind of things, 
all attached.  She explained that they were Edwardian, which apparently 
dated them to some time period, I forget.  Anyway, in the neighborhood 
were all these newer units in amongst the old ones, much more modern 
designs.  So I ask, oh, have people bought these and torn them down, and 
rebuilt in a newer style.  She says, "Not quite, this was Hitler's 
doing." Bombs and V-2s and such created random urban renewal in the hood...

I really like these shows, not so much for the content but the historical 
perspective.  I knew little or nothing about the UK from the end of WWII to

Yeah I can relate.  Although last winter sometime I pulled out my tux, 
which replaced the original I bought at Keezers of Harvard Square in 
Cambridge (which was actually in Central Square) about 33 or 34 years 
ago.  The original is too tight even with the adjustable waist opened up 
a bit, the jacket is tight.  The replacement, at least 20yo is a bit 
snug but still wearable if I don't eat too much at the dinner!  I wore 
that one to a dinner at Prince Ranier's Motor Museum in Monaco once, in 
like 1997 or 98, then after that we went over to the Grand Casino and 
walked around (we didn't get past the foyer though, even though I 
definitely looked like a high roller, Agent 009)!  I even had a very 
attractive young lady to escort, but the snobbish frenchie at the moat 
thought I smelled of elderberries and taunted me.


I was at a wedding a coupla years ago, not wearing the tux, and was 
sitting next to this guy I got conversing with.  Turns out he was a 
friend of the bride, and was from Boston area.  Oh, we used to live up 
there, blahblah.  What do you do?  I own Keezers of Harvard Square, it's 
a clothing shop.  That was so great, I told him my story about my 
original tux and he got quite a charge out of it.  Turns out he had only 
owned the place for a few years, had bought it from the founding family 
I think he said, but definitely liked the story.  We got on really well, 
it made for a fun wedding meal.  Keezers, the clothier to generations of 
Hahvahd (and some MIT) Men!

If it's bad enough to clog the in-tank filter (strainer) you'll need to
drain the tank. Clean/replace that strainer, and maybe clean the tank.  

I got a load of very wet fuel about 10 years ago and it rusted up the inside
of the tank (300SD) with symptoms like yours.  I had to pressure-wash the
inside of the tank and the amount of crap that came out was amazing.  You
can inspect the inside of the tank by removing the fuel gauge and shining a
good (LED) flashlight inside. I new tank will be shiny silver inside.  Black
is bad.  There are commercial places that redo fuel tanks but I never used
one.

The biodegradable wiring insulation was present from the early 90s, about 91-92 
I believe, through 1995.  There might be some really early 86 models with it, 
but I’ve not heard of any.  It’s also dependent on the chassis, too.

I’ve never been too clear on the start point, but I do know they stopped in 
1995.

97 E300 down since the 10 year newer R320 is torn apart in the middle of a 3 
hour (so far) alternator replacement. At least if this thing breaks down surely

#1:  What Jim and Mitch said.  Plus add agicide to the tank.  Algicide 
such as Biobor can be found at marine stores or truckstops.   Another 
symptom of plugged fuel filters in an SDL is premature downshifting when 
going up a grade.


Also, veg oil congeals (polymerizes) in the tank when it sits around, 
especially in warm weather.  The "i burn free fuel" WVO crowd will never 
tell you this.  The congealed veg oil will also plug the filters very 
effectively.  You may have to clean or replace the tank.  I found a very 
strong ammonia solution to be the best cleaner when the tank is out.  
Let the ammonia sit in the tank to do its magik.  It takes days to clean 
the crud out.  It is much better/cheaper to get a clean used tank.


#2:  Find the little piece of tubing that runs from the intake manifold 
to the left inner fender, more or less 90º to the direction of travel.  
take off the line, blow it out with high pressure air, then blow out the 
fitting into the intake manifold.  When that is plugged, you have a 
non-turbo.  with that clear, the turbo should kick in.  I do this with 
every OM603 engine I acquire, unless it already runs like a raped ape.


I am guessing algae is the #1 problem, but if it clears, you may find #2.

The top speed in my 300SD went down when I had an algae bloom in my 
tank and
plugged the clear pre-filter. I could leave home with a fine running 
car, notice
a power drop on the way home from town, and be unable to drive more 
than 30mph

by the time I got home.

Swap your fuel filters. If it starts running right then goes bad 
again, clean

your tank.

An SDL is no slouch, and slipping trannies are hard to mistake.
Your fuel system is probably crapped up. BioD scrapes loose
all kinds of crud.
