I still have a pair of NOS bumper overriders for a W111 coupe and a

2016-10-12 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Yep, that is about what I found. One was $3500 with what appears to be
BMW bags (but could be samsonite) and a windshield. Black/ white
pinstripes. Others were $4k up.

Wish I had a way to pick it up and move it west a couple states. I
could fix it up this winter and split the increase with you when it
sells. It I could find a way to hitch a ride for it, I'd buy it if you
didn't like choice A.

down at $1400 though it was a bit more rusty in the frame then mine
is. I'm not really interested in in doing the work and sourcing the

[MBZ] Value of nice W111 bumper set: Jaime?

2016-10-12 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I'm wondering if anyone can help me figure out a fair value for a nice
complete front and rear bumper set with uppers from a Nevada desert 111.

I'm not sure if anyone can help much unless Jaime knows or someone can
find the price for new halves from EPC.

The last time I checked, maybe 12-15 years ago one half of one bumper,
without the uppers or bumper guard was over $1000. If new parts are
available, the parts would probably be $6000 to $10,000 I'd guess.

These are nice, good chrome, complete paint inside, but they have some
small dents as typical for a car that was driven. They are not perfect
for a show car, but are very nice for a driver, or need little work to
be restored/rechromed.

Complete Front Bumper, with uppers and bumper guards and mounts.

Complete Rear Bumper, with uppers and bumper guards, license lights, and
mounts.

I'm pretty sure nobody found any rods but number one and rarely number two bent,
and nobody claims to have found bent rods on a car with intact sealing on the
oil galley through the head gasket by cylinder one. The head might need to be
milled, the head bolts definitely need to be replaced when you take the head
off, but I'd be willing to regasket a 350 and drive it 100k to see what happens.

Indications are that the bent #1 rod comes from coolant leaking into the
#1 cylinder when the head gasket fails. No proof. If I found a
non-oel burning rodbender, I might try just changing the head gasket.
If I did not have 2 good spare engines, I would change the head gasket
for sure! I'd guess 90-95% probability that would fix it so long as
there is no prior damage.

Re: [MBZ] Nice, A Little Pricey

2016-10-12 Thread Donald Snook via Mercedes
The seller claims in its been in the family since new. If they have records
showing a new head/engine/rods etc, then that car is an absolute steal. I
agree with you, if it has never been addressed it is just a matter of time. In
fact, it makes more sense that it has not failed yet considering such low
mileage. Remember what Dr. Booth said, if the issue has not been addressed
then they ALL fail without exception.

I was at an Auction last year and a very nice super clean 90 300E (124) with
only 60,000 miles sold for $9,000. I thought it would go for $6000 or maybe
$7,000 if there was a bidding war. I can only imagine what a 126 Diesel with
45,000 miles could do at a big auction. A lot of low mileage cars are bought
at these auctions by dealers who put them on ebay for insane prices. If I had
that car and the rodbender issue had been fixed, I wouldn't take less than
$10,000 for it. There are enough people out there who love MB diesels and love
the 126 that I think it could go HIGH!

In 1945, one of my older brothers and I rigged a gal. paint can with nail
holes in its bottom on the roof of a farm shelter to serve as a shower. We
put a wash/laundry tub on top of the shelter and filled it with water each
morning. At the end of each day, we would pour the solar-heated water into
the "shower head" for each other. I'd bet we were the only farm, boys for
miles around getting a daily shower. I was already an innovator at only 11.

As a kid, my mother drove a '72 T-Bird for many years. It had a 427 ci engine,
what a gas hog! I think the body was very similar to your brother's car in
terms of size (HUGE), but not as angular. Terrible in the Wisconsin winters
without snow tires, but Mom drove about thirty miles each way to work so she
preferred all-season tires. That car got stuck a lot in the winter, I think we
kept a chain and shovel in the trunk year-round. Very comfortable ride, fast
for the time, stylish, I think it had over 150k miles when it was sold to the
mailman. He drove a rural mail delivery route and racked up many more miles in
short order, I think the car only lasted a few more years on mail delivery duty.

My Mom inherited a 1973 Chevy Impala Sport Coupe that had a 350 in it. That
thing was like driving a giant marshmallow. You would hit a bump and the
suspension would finally settle a couple miles down the road. No feel for the
driver, I recall using the term “wallow” when describing it to my Dad.

That being said, it was a fun car to drive compared to a Beetle. I remember
the nice brocade cloth upholstery and the front bench seat.

Better is subjective.
SparkEV is a better driver in many ways than Spark (even the upgraded 2016-2017
Sparks have less than 100hp, and none of them can squeal the tires to 40mph like
SparkEV can), but I have trouble thinking of anything a Leaf can do that a
Sentra cannot.

Faster only applies to Spark and Tesla.

Cleaner I have to wonder about, especially when taking remote powerplant and
manufacturing induced emissions into account.

Cheaper to buy, only if you really mean 'bought with taxpayers' money. Spark is
a $14k car, SparkEV is a $26k car. Sentra is a $18k car, Leaf is a $30k car. And
don't get me started on Tesla.

Cheaper to operate, yes, for me an electric uses 2-3 cents per mile of fuel. A
40mpg gasser is 6 cents.

Cheaper to maintain, in the short run, an EV needs brake fluid, wiper blades and
tires, and every ten years or so coolant and hoses, assuming it has a proper
cooling system.
But the first out of warranty traction battery ($5k for Leaf, probably much more
for cars with proper battery thermal management systems) will get your
attention. I figure if I can get a used Leaf or preferably SparkEV for 10-12
cents per remaining battery warranty mile it'd be worth buying. And I have seen
$8k certified pre-owned Leafs with under 25k on the odo and battery warranty to
100k (friends don't let friends buy 2011-2012 Leafs with 60mo/60k batteries).

No offense taken. Its not my car. It is definitely not everyone's taste. For
those that are into this era of car, this is a good one. The Town Landau
package was a big deal back then. It dramatically increased the price of the
car. The 77 T-Bird was a huge seller when it came out. In 1976, Ford sold
53,000 T-Birds. But, in 1977 when this new body style came out, they sold
318,000 of them.

He also has a 1971 Pontiac Grand Prix that is BEAUTIFUL with only 40,000 miles.
It is spectacular and worth significantly more than this T-Bird. He just
recently bought a 1983 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham Coupe with super low miles
and he had to sell one car -- which is why the T-bird is for sale.

I think his price is too high. But, I have seen others like this sell for

Re: [MBZ] Shakes when...

2016-10-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I don't think so, but I haven't looked at mine to see.

The OM617 has a rack damper screw that is visible at the top rear of the pump
as a bolt with a lock nut on it.

The bolt has a spring on the end that presses against the fuel rack in the pump
to dampen oscillations in the rack at idle. When the accelerator is pressed,
the rack moves away from the bolt and is no longer affected by the spring.

The springs tend to weaken over time, so if unstable idle occurs, you can
adjust the bolt in to see if it affects the idle and smooths it out. If not,
replace the bolt if you're sure everything else such as injectors are in order.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Thunderbird

2016-10-12 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I saw a beautiful 64 TBird convertible in traffic yesterday morning.
Might be 65 or 66. Not sure how many years they had the big rectangular
tail lights but I think 64 was the first year and by 67 they had changed
a lot, if I recall correctly. 63 still had the big round tail lights.
Not my primary choice in color as it was a rusty brown orange color with
a black top but it sure looked in nice shape. I could go for one of those.

No offense to you or your brother, Don, but the 77 does not do much for
me now.
I almost bought one when it was new but my wife talked me out of it. She
thought it too big for her to drive. We bought a 77 Monarch instead. It
was not among the top cars that Ford ever built but we kept it a long
time and it served us reasonably well. Lousy handling etc but it looked
good (for the time anyway). It was white 2door with a white quarter
vinyl roof and a dark red interior.

[MBZ] OT: Thunderbird

If you are into non-mercedes collectable cars, my brother is selling one of his.

https://memphis.craigslist.org/cto/5824446509.html

It's a cool car and the car has been a winner at multiple car shows he has
taken it to. I was with him when he bought the car. It had 19,000 miles and
now it has 22,000 miles. 1977 was the first year for the downsized
Thunderbird. I suppose "downsized" is relative because this is still a big
car! It really looks like it has 10,000 miles on it. Not everyone's taste,
but still interesting.

After Hurricane Andrew hit, I went down to the area with a team from Habitat
for Humanity and some guys from my church. We camped out in a Church that had
rebuilt a big all purpose building and the facilities were pretty primitive.
We figured out the best way to shower was using this exact method. It was
always a battle to try to be the first few people to shower at the end of the
day after the sun had heated the water. It was good for about 3 very quick
showers before the warm water ran out and the only choice was straight from the
garden hose!

I wonder if it's worth having both a submersible and a pedestal in the
same

hole
if there's room for the bases. Each pump would need its own one way
valve

before
teeing the pipes together, but if you set the pedestal to come on an
inch

higher
than the submersible you'd be covered for any failure of the
submersible

(but
not for total power failure).

When I put my new furnace in, I set in on 11" stacks of concrete
blocks.
When I added the indoor coil for a heat pump 2 years later, I had to
ditch

the
blocks to make room for the extra height. Now it sits on 3/4" of rubber
patio
pavers. It turns out my sump never rises above floor level in power
failures,
but sometimes rainwater seeps into the basement opposite the sump, and
runs past
the furnace to the sump, usually when I forget to replace the outspouts
for the
gutters after I mow the yard.

Thank you. That's the nicest thing anyone has said to me about cars since I
bought a Prius.
The article was about eliminating gas and diesel cars in GERMANY, but for some
reason people thought it was about doing so in America which is highly unlikely
for the reasons given.
Personally, I like having a very economical, but rough riding, gas burner such
as a Prius when fuel prices are high, and a very old, easy to fix, smooth
riding Mercedes diesel to drive when fuel prices are low.

Hi Jon,
I owe you an email about your Zeniths. I've been doing two jobs at work
lately, so finding time for email is more difficult than usual.

But, interesting about the BMW pumps... I'll have to look into them. If I
buy a set I can get you some too and we can save on shipping.

As for rebuilding your carbs yourself, it's really not difficult. It's a
matter of keeping track of what goes where and how it all goes together.
Doing one at a time and taking photos makes it easier. Assembling the
chokes is the most tricky.

Good luck!

Injectors and/or timing.

The engine shocks are important, but replacing them won't affect the shaking at
idle enough for you to notice. Be aware that the repair kits, only available
through Mercedes, are about $75/each.

I would save the $ and put it towards a set of rebuilt and tightly calibrated
injectors or new engine mounts.
