Rusty told me GM had quit making R4 compressors, so he sent me an R4 that was 
made or rebuilt in Texas. Company had a website which claimed that is was 
actually manufactured there. It's still working well after several years.
Don't remember the name of the company and can't find any reference to R-4's 
being made in Texas.

The Sanden conversion for the R4 cars is a solution in search of a
problem.  R4 compressors work well and are readily available.  Why go
through all the trouble?  To save a couple of horse power?

Plus, if you're not careful, you end up with a chinese Sanden compressor,
which most on the market are.  But I guess that could happen with an R4
also.

I can understand it for york cars somewhat, but I'm more inclined to keep
those original now too, since cars with York compressors are quickly
becoming classics, if not already.  And this is coming from a guy who has
done these conversions on a few W108s.

You can find complete sets for a specific application for around $15.00 or 
less.  You can also buy the individual O rings, but I figure it can’t hurt to 
have the whole set.  About the only thing you might not need is the big seal/O 
ring for the manifold on the compressor if one is used.

Thanks a bunch for the offer, Mitch, but I ordered a complete set for the whole 
system just to have them.  I could have gone up to my local Advance Auto, as 
they have all kinds of A O rings and probably have the correct size, but I 
figure I’ll get a complete set just to have on hand and for future use.

I’m a bit puzzled over my inability to find the remains of the set I had from 
the S500 compressor replacement.  It’s not like me to have tossed them out.  
I’m sure I’ll find them as soon as the new ones arrive.

And Kaleb, this is the leak detector I got:

Seems to work pretty well.  I tasked it with a “sniff” from the supply line at 
the can to see how it reacted and to set the sensitivity, then cleared it out 
and went at it.  I did notice that if you block off the end of the probe it 
will go off, so if you’re poking around in an area you can’t see into you could 
get a false positive.  I was definitely getting hits at and around the plate 
where the two lines attach to the rear of the compressor, so I’m comfortable 
that the leak is in this area.  I don’t think it’s the original compressor, but 
if it is I can understand why the O rings would have failed in this area. I ran 
it over all of the lines and fittings that I could reach and got nothing 
anywhere else.

I’m going to replace the O rings on the compressor fittings, install a new 
receiver dryer, then pull it down and check for leaks.  If it holds vacuum at 
that point I’m calling it done and charging.

[MBZ] AC Leak

Got my leak detector the other day, just went out and put enough refrigerant in 
to get 50 psi on both sides of the system as they suggested.

Definitely got a hit at the connection on the back of the compressor where the 
pipes bolt up to the compressor case.

Ordering a set of O rings today.  Thought I had some from doing a compressor on 
the S500 coupe, but couldn’t find them.  No guarantee that they would have been 
the right size, so I figure I’ll get a complete set for the car just to be safe.
