Just got done watching Bob’s videos on resealing. Looks pretty straightforward

Any reason why one couldn’t use compressor oil rather than mineral oil for

Also, I assume there are charts somewhere that will give the amount of oil to
fill the compressor with before reinstalling it? I’ll do some Googling….

She was suitably unimpressed. She likes the smaller R129 chassis, and the
response that the M119 provides when you wail on it.

I have to defer to her choice somewhat, as the R129 with the later model wheels
and tires I have on it drives like it’s on rails. I don’t like the harsh ride,
however, but she does. I often considered trying to find a 400E or 500E for
her, but I was afraid it would cost me a fortune in upkeep and/or traffic
tickets in insurance premiums.

Whatever.

Try Johnstone or wayne dennis other HVAC distributor for hoses.

Dan Penoff via Mercedes
December 1, 2016 at 6:36 PM
Had to do the crank position sensor on the SL500 when I got home, took
me all of about 15 minutes, if that. Cleaned the MAF while I had the
air cleaner off. Seemed happy, so I moved to the 300D to do a couple
of minor things.

Replaced the old sealing ring on the power steering pump. It was
leaking slightly and making a mess, so it got replaced. Realized I had
left the brake fluid reservoir cap off when I was topping off the
fluid yesterday. Dang it. No sign of it anywhere in the nether regions
of the engine compartment, but no worries, as I had a spare in the
“drawer ‘o’ parts”. Huzzah!

I got some adapter hoses for my R134a manifold gauge set and tried
checking the AC pressures. No joy. The R12 fittings don’t have a nub
or button that projects out far enough to depress the pin on the
Schrader valve. Darn it. Guess I just need to break down and buy an
R12 gauge set. Wish I could find a set of hoses that would work with
my existing gauge set. If anyone knows of a source for some hoses that
would work, I’m all ears.

I may tackle the cooling system drain and flush tomorrow after work.
I’ve got new radiator hoses that are nice and flexible, unlike the
ones that are currently on the car. Over the weekend I’m hoping to do
the engine mounts as well and maybe the transmission fluid and filter,
along with the B1 piston kit that I got today in my parts order.

As I'm thinking about putting it on the DAS/Xentry tonight and
checking codes, it occurs to me that this is a classic crankshaft
position sensor failure coming on.

Go to Amazon for the Bosch part - none to be found through Prime,
meaning everyone else is shipping to arrive next week. Check the
FLAPS, no one has one. Call NAPA - nothing in the state.

It's 4:30, and I know my dealer parts guy is already gone for the day,
but I call anyway.

Cutoff for VOR orders is 4:45. Got one in Jacksonville and it will be
here at 7:00 am tomorrow. About $80 my cost, but the Bosch equivalent
is $50 and overnight or express shipping would have made it that much
or maybe more.

Here's the convert part:

Gonna give the wife the 350SDL to drive tomorrow. She's never driven
it, or a diesel, since my 1979 300TD. I told her once she got out of
the neighborhood she should drive it like she stole it.

This will be interesting.

Re: [MBZ] Let the Martha'ing Begin!

2016-12-01 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Had to do the crank position sensor on the SL500 when I got home, took me all
of about 15 minutes, if that. Cleaned the MAF while I had the air cleaner off.
Seemed happy, so I moved to the 300D to do a couple of minor things.

Replaced the old sealing ring on the power steering pump. It was leaking
slightly and making a mess, so it got replaced. Realized I had left the brake
fluid reservoir cap off when I was topping off the fluid yesterday. Dang it.
No sign of it anywhere in the nether regions of the engine compartment, but no
worries, as I had a spare in the “drawer ‘o’ parts”. Huzzah!

I got some adapter hoses for my R134a manifold gauge set and tried checking the
AC pressures. No joy. The R12 fittings don’t have a nub or button that
projects out far enough to depress the pin on the Schrader valve. Darn it.
Guess I just need to break down and buy an R12 gauge set. Wish I could find a
set of hoses that would work with my existing gauge set. If anyone knows of a
source for some hoses that would work, I’m all ears.

I may tackle the cooling system drain and flush tomorrow after work. I’ve got
new radiator hoses that are nice and flexible, unlike the ones that are
currently on the car. Over the weekend I’m hoping to do the engine mounts as
well and maybe the transmission fluid and filter, along with the B1 piston kit
that I got today in my parts order.

Part of the deal, unlimited incidents, flatbed towing, etc.

I’ll have to keep the 300D in the garage and leave the 350SDL outside, which
I’m not keen about, but to save $1000/year in premiums, I’ll do it.

I’m going to call my Allstate agent tomorrow and ask them if they have anything
remotely competitive. I’m sure they don’t.

2016-12-01 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
yes. Even when I drove the esquella bus, in snow, I'd hit the brakes
once in a while just to be sure I had reasonable traction.

Never had a problem with a bus or truck in schnee. One ditsy female
driver slid a busload of kids off a gravel road hill due to stupidity.
My route took me up the same hill. The dispatch told me to drive 10 mi
around to pick up the kids, and I was at the foot of the hill. Her bus
was clear off the road at about 40º tip. I turned around, got lined
up, backed up to be able to get a run, and ran right up the hill beside
her. At the top I stopped and had her kids walk up to my bus. They
were not even late to school, much to their chagrin. Had I driven
around, they would have been late. Had I driven around, I would have
had to back about a mile in from the last place I could turn around. My
load of kids was telling me I could not go up the hill, until I did it.
Then they were sheepish, and the new crew, figuring out they might not
be late to school were quite subdued too. THAT was nice!

My father was the drivers ed teacher at my high school, he taught us

losing traction on purpose, by heavy braking and by turning too
quickly, in order to refresh the memory of how to drive in the snow.

2016-12-01 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
If I'm driving a Benz in the winter I powerslide it once a week. The rule is I
can't lift throttle after the wheels break loose, I have to straighten it out
with steering only. Typically with the 4Matic I'd overcorrect 6-12" the first
time and then get it right every time for the rest of the winter. One winter I
got it right the first time.

With a FWD car, any sliding maneuver usually results in self-correcting
understeer, not much skill involved if it has ABS.

yes. When I left home, they said light snow in the early morning only
near the Mn border. over 100 miles away and no liklihood of hitting the
homestead. By the time I was an hour or so down the road, the schnee
was starting to hit 35 miles SOUTH of the homestead.

10 hours later, on the return, I run into snow 70 miles away, opposite
of the direction the weather normally travels. 35 miles later, in the
outskirts of the large metro I have to go through, traffic is getting
thick and people are starting to act nutso. After the turn 90º right to
the other interstate, there are 3 lanes, packed wall to wall, and kooks
flipping lanes without clearance, but not clipping anyone. The snow is
heavier, and starting to stick. I hit a slush patch on the ramp and the
rt drive tire lost traction.I have my own lane after the turn until the
next exit. I decided it was not safe and stayed in the rt lane and got
off on the first exit. I had intended to get off anyway to get fuel for
21¢ less than around home.

I went into the Mills Fleet Farm (Dan and Max will know this is a huge
store.) to kill some time until the traffic thinned out. I was afraid
if I procrastinated too long, the temp would drop below 32 before I got
home and another set of morons would start cracking up. In the store, I
ran into a policeman we we started talking. He asked if I was going
hunting and I said No, the traffic was thick and there were nuts on the
loose. It was the first snow of the season, so the city drivers have no
concept of snow or slick. He said the just came from a 3 car pileup,
then his radio went off that 3 or more vehicles had piled up in the fast
lane and into the median barrier, on the same short stretch I just got
off of.

I left with fuel after about 45 min. the traffic had thinned some. the
temp dipped to 32, but not below, then was back up to 33 and I got home
without further incident.

Last night someone ran into a C store in the large metro area. Yes,
completely into the store. This afternoon somebody ran full throttle
into a wallyworld where I first ran into schnee last night. so far 3
dead. As of now, they believe both were medical incidents, not related
to the rel ig ion of peas.

Re: [MBZ] "84 300D eBay Auction

2016-12-01 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Even considering the cost of the storage? That space could have been used for
some money making. To "tenderly" store the car you'd need climate control,
humidity reduction etc to protect your investment, could get expensive...
The car wouldn't be drivable 30 years later, all the rubber would need
replacing at the very least.

Don't know anything about them but they have been there at

They use part of the old WW2 AAF base for their track.

I do think a day at Bondurant's defensive driving school at

People think there's nothing to driving in a place like this, but when it

I was merely pointing out the criteria that make bidding on plebeian 123
cars go beserk. I would never want to own a 123 garage queen.

2016-12-01 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Good for him. I'm glad someone gets something out of eBay these days, as it's
become so buyer-centric that as a seller it's tough to do well.

When I tried selling the S430 with a reserve there were a number of bidders who
would bid some stupid number, like $20k, just to expose the reserve, then they
would retract the bid. I checked them out and several of the accounts were
used to do nothing but this, as they had tons of retractions.

I complained to eBay but they seemed indifferent about the whole thing.

My current pet peeve is drivers at the front of the line for a red light, who
start looking at their phone and miss the light turning green. I lay on the

I'd think you might be able to find that in South Afrika.  The original

One of them moved to OZ.  I think Henny was the last of our foreign members.

I would actually prefer to enroll her in a driving course and improve that
skill set.  May not happen anytime soon, but I'd be more comfortable in the
long run with that solution.  I guess I'm the typical husband / male who
thinks his spouse can't drive, yet I'm the one with the speeding tickets
and the (few) fender-benders.

My wife spent many of her adult driving years in southern Italy, a place
where (it used to be) that stop lights and the lines on the road were
purely for decoration and few wore seat-belts (wearing a seat-belt, I was
told, was a sign of fear in the wearer.  Child safety seat for the little
ones?  What a waste of money!).  Under stress, such a driver may revert to
those habits, passing on left or right, on the shoulder or over the line
into oncoming traffic, whatever it takes to get from A to B in an
emergency.  That works great in Italy or in a war zone, and probably in
many other parts of the world (Panama comes to mind, I've had some very
scary rides in taxicabs in Panama City), but in the U.S. of A., other
drivers just are not prepared for that type of behavior and some tend to
get violently angry when someone else "breaks the rules" and gets ahead of
them or inconveniences them in any way.

A friend who lives on IOP tracks a Miata with a team of guys, I should ask
him about such goings on. I think the Miata has an engine from some other
marque, maybe a SBC or something like that. Very redneck, upsets the
purists. They have done of the LeMons races, some "serious" races, I've
been invited to tag along and I've got to do that one of these days.

Re: [MBZ] Another Convert?

2016-12-01 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
I couldn't do it with the spouse. I would end up a quivering mass of jelly.

I do think a day at Bondurant's defensive driving school at Sebring would be
money well spent, however.

For a Christmas present for you both enroll in a day at the BMW track in
Greer. It is a great time and you get to drive spiritedly on a track

Re: [MBZ] Fl MiniQ

2016-12-01 Thread MG via Mercedes
Nope, trees all around, that's why you would need to be above 100
by the end. An amusing story, I invited a friend over one time.
He flies an ultralight just like I do, from a long paved runway
at a local airplane community. He flew over along the runway and
left, didn't land. When I called him to ask why he told me that
my runway was to narrow (90') and short. For an ultralight?
Really? It all depends on what you are comfortable with. With
your plane I would probably be uncomfortable. With mine I'm in
the air at 200 and at better then 300 by the end of the runway.
That's good enough for me to turn around and have a good chance
at getting down. I probably should try that when I get back to
flying.

As for the trees, yep it's been a while since I've used it. Told
myself I wouldn't fly till I got the dome done. It's taken a bit
longer then I thought it would. Slight understatement there. I
could have the trees out and ready to go in a week. Just give me
the word.

The Dome is right there to the west of the runway nearer to the
north end then the south. If the picture you see has some long
poles sitting near it on the edge of the runway laying E-W then
look real close at the E end of the poles and you can see a
shadow of me standing there. Those are the poles that are now
holding up the roof of the solar support structure.

Yes, but will they collect?

I read something a while back about how a relatively high percentage of eBay
car sales never actually close since it's rather simple to back out of the deal
with no consequences. Not sure how accurate that is, but my own experiences
there led me to believe there's some truth to it.

Re: [MBZ] More differentials

2016-12-01 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Again, while even if I have proof that fluids were done recently, I still do
it. It's cheap insurance and again it gives you a point of reference you're
absolutely sure is accurate.

It also forces you to look at and inspect stuff you might not necessarily look
at otherwise. The power steering filter in the 300D looked awful, and the
fluid was dark. How many people even know there's a filter in the PS system?

Re: [MBZ] More differentials

This is the pump I use for filling differentials. Makes filling them crazy
simple:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FJT0304/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Two fills and I'm done. The 300D took me all of maybe 10-15 minutes tops, not
including the time I left it to drain.

So it was probably like mine, out of sight out of mind and you never
checked the level or changed the oil like I am guilty of. One thing is
certain I am changing the diff oil in all my cars. Seems poos came up with
a pump or something to make it easier.

Re: [MBZ] Another Convert?

2016-12-01 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes

Undersquare, very undersquare, bore was an inch and a quarter less than the

Absolutely. Gives me a point of reference so I know for sure when fluids are
