Maybe once I get the carbon and coke dealt with, a clean with this would be fine

these won't work in a semi-auto so well but you can buy 22 rat-

shot - they look like little shotgun shells sort of. they have a round
clear plastic cover over the shell. don't know if they are super sonic
or not - probably not -

those subsonic rounds are best for bolt action target shooting. but

I had to look up the Savage 24, I don't remember what model mine is but
grandfather gave me his .22/20ga. I've shot that an awful lot too. Good gun but
not as handy as the little H .410 and since the H cost basically nothing I
don't mind if it gets banged up a little. I think that was $100 and it came
with a .22 barrel. I'd love to find a reasonably priced .357 magnum barrel but
they're scarce and big money...

Realistically how many shots are you going to fire? Even at $25/box thats only
$1/shot. If you shoot 10 a year big deal...
Dad got almost a whole case of .410 from an estate sale for I think $25. The
only thing is they're #9s. I shot a partridge with one two years ago,
surprisingly cleaning it wasn't so bad.

That could work.

I’m pretty sure I can slide the new one in from the interior side of the door.
I just have to get an idea of the profile so I get something that will fit or
at least occupy most of the space, the rest of which I can fill with caulk.

[MBZ] Preliminary Front End Work

2017-03-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Wife’s SL500 had a really sloppy inner tie rod end that was discovered last
week during a routine alignment. Shop quoted me $220 to do the tie rod
including parts. Ouch.

Got a Lemförder tie rod from the Amazonians for $50 that’s on UPS for delivery
this afternoon.

In an effort to be efficient, I got under the car as soon as I got home in
order to remove the offending tie rod. Got my HF ball joint popper tool out,
put it on the outer tie rod end and had at it.

Didn’t budge.

Tap-tap-tap-tap. TAP-TAP-TAP-TAP-BOOM!

Wow. I knew it was going to pop, but I don’t think you’re ever completely
prepared for one of these things to let go. Darned near soiled myself.

The inner is a lot tougher, since it’s buried in the undercarriage with minimal
clearance. I could barely turn the wrench 10-15 degrees at a time. Got it
good and tight, then beat the crap out of it.

POP!

Done. The HF tool has paid for itself already. Car is ready for the new tie
rod, which the UPS guy is just now pulling up with.

Back to the garage…

Use one of those flush cutting oscillating saws and cut it off flush with
the door jamb, then just set a new standard one in place, trimmed to fit. A
bit of caulk between what's left of the old one and the ends of the new,
and you're set to go.

That would be great. Anything you can pass along would be appreciated.

I have a plate type spring compressor I got for the W140s, so I’m good there.
I don’t have a local machine shop identified, so I need to do that as I’ve
never had to farm anything out around here. My tire guys do front end work, so
I’m pretty sure I can get them to press the ball joints and all that since I
have a good relationship with them.

Both upper and lower ball joint boots are shot, so I’m assuming the joints are
on their way out as well. LCA bushings actually look pretty good from what I
can see, but if I have to go that deep into the front end it seems silly to
skip replacing them.

I have a big compressor, a big rattle gun and pickle forks (but not for the gun
- I can get some of those at HF, I’m guessing.) I also have all the W126
manual operations for the work. I would probably replace the front brake discs
while I’m there as they aren’t far away from hitting the wear limits, and the
pads are more than half gone, too. I’m assuming I would need a ball joint
separator - has anyone determined if the HF one works?

Someone replaced the tie rods in the recent past, as they’re all good and the
center even still has the Mercedes parts sticker hanging from it. Idler arm
bushing can probably be done as well. It’s not sloppy, but there’s a boatload
of grease around the ends which makes me suspect its integrity.

Not sure I want to go MB on this, as the upper control arms are stupid
expensive as are the lowers. I’m having a tough time finding everything in
Lemforder, too. I see Meyle and Febi, with Febi being the cheapest (money
would not be a major concern if I was doing this for a handoff to the oldest
boy, but I’m not paying $300 to MB for a part I can get for under $100
elsewhere, either.) Anything I would buy aftermarket I would go to FCP Euro
since they have lifetime replacement. That way if it wears out in a couple of
years I can get a new one from them gratis.

but it was ALL renewed). I got all the stuff from Jabba so can dig out the
order list of all the parts. I figured as long as I was doing the job the
marginal cost of parts was minimal. I think I did new break rotors and pats at
the time too just because it was all apart, and you will want to clean and
grease the bearings.

A BFH and air hammer (with pickle forks and chisels) are your friends for BJs
and steering bits. I have the spring compressor if you need to borrow it (and
I think you do need it, it is still under compression with the LCA lowered). I
took new BJs to a shop to have them use the tool to press in, cost maybe $30
and took about 15min. Bushings (subframe mounts too) are easy enough with a
biggish vise. A rattle wrench is your friend too just to make easy work of
losening everything.

I have some pics I took of some of the process, I can send them along if I can
dig them out.

Then you'll need to take it to a good shop for an alignment.

The only thing I should have done was to try to adjust the steering box, it is
still a bit lose.

I would think the way to repair it would be to remove the whole door

You should be able to get an aluminum threshold so you won't have that

Re: [MBZ] Thrashed Threshold

2017-03-13 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Can you make the top smooth somehow after you rip out the old seal?
Then you can put a seal on the bottom of the door.

If you have to take it out, saw it in two in the middle, and pull each
half toward the other door jamb, leaving casing in place. Fit the new
one inside the casing and fill the voids with foam and/or caulk.

Is it all that necessary, just between house and garage? Not exposed
to weather? Can you do some sort of "repair" (i.e., just rip it out?)

I wanted to try them more for keeping them reasonably close to the
vast estate, that they might not carry too far if they manage to
escape the trees and leaves and such, if by some remote chance I might
miss the vermin. But yeah, they probably don't have enough to work
the mechanism.

I bought some subsonic .22LRs a coupla weeks ago I have not tried yet,
the guy at the gun shop said they might not work the semi-auto rifle
as they don't have much kick. I guess the pellet gun has more
velocity (it is maybe 1150 fps) but not very accurate. I have a 16g
semi-auto but that is probably overkill for rodents, and shells are
hard to find for some reason. I should look around for a .410.

[MBZ] Monday 300SEL Fun

2017-03-13 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Drove the car to work today, a 50-50 mix of surface streets and highway. Other
than the serpentine belt screeching like a banshee when I was heading out (I'm
sure the neighbors loved that at 6:00 am) the drive was relatively dull. I did
notice a very low and almost imperceptible rumble that could be a driveshaft
center bearing or the front flex disc that has a small crack in it. That or I'm
just being overly paranoid, which I find sort of strange since I had no problem
driving the car almost 60 miles home on a bad wheel bearing

Got my 5% discount on an order for a new belt tensioner and adjustment rod from
FCP Euro. They should be here by the end of the week along with an Amazon order
for 20 meters of the hard vacuum line. Lots of vacuum line needs replacement
in this car's engine compartment, believe me.

I have yet to dig in, since Polei is the best running car in the
stable at the moment.

Before the drive out east, the turbo on the 603 was pretty much not
making goodness. On the return trip it started to leak oil. The thing
spins up, and I am thinking maybe the drains are coked up.

How big of a job will it be to remove the system and get it all
cleaned up? I am not feeling exceptionally brave at the moment. Too
many cars being less than spectacular, and I really want at least one
I can depend upon.
