Has a slight uneven cold idle which turns into a dead cylinder when
hot, leaking lots of fuel into the ground. I removed manifold today.

Near as I can tell from brief research, the largest glass container of milk
in the 1950s would be half-gallons...

I have seen gallon cartons in the past, but they're somewhat unwieldy.
Most dairies use plastic jugs for milk nowadays.

Larry Turner via Mercedes
March 19, 2017 at 7:28 AM
That's why I don't like metal ramps - they have always started to
slide when I tried to drive onto them. I guess the concrete surface
where I was working was too slick for them? I was thinking that
perhaps there are some kind of hard foam/plastic ramps that will
support the car, and be light enough to move around and will be easy
to drive on and won't slide across concrete.

Of course a lift would be ideal.

Re: [MBZ] Sunday's 300SEL Fun

2017-03-19 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Sounds like more fun that I had -- just front brakes and hoses on the TE --
rotors were marginal and the pads pretty worn but not shot, but I was getting a
grinding sound on firm brake application so I replace everything.

Found that the rotor retaining screw had broken away a ring of the disk, so I'm
betting the drag and pulsation I was getting up front was a rotor installed on
a dirty hub. It was done by my brother when he put new ball joints in it while
I was down with heart failure a couple years ago. Should have done what I
thought of and re-installed that rotor myself, he's prone to rushing and
getting pissed and not doing things quite right.

So now the pedal feels right, there is no pulsation or drag, car feels almost
like a Benz should.

Got an annual bonus check from work, smaller than I'd like, but enough that I
will order the rear parts tomorrow - rotors, pads, new springs and pins, a
caliper rebuild kit for one side, and the three rear hoses. Dollar to a
doughnut I have a bad brake line causing drag.

Might finally get decent milage with this car, it's been very low 20s and as
low as 18 mpg, even on the highway. Tires might last a bit longer, too!

Now if I can just figure out why I have intermittent heater blower
activity. Damned thing works if you wriggle the connector up by the brake
booster, but only until you shut it off. I'm thinking one of the pins or
sockets in the connector has a bad solder connection.

[MBZ] Change the oil, and fuses

2017-03-19 Thread clay via Mercedes
There was a club tech session yesterday. Pretty good shop, they let us put
cars on the lifts and got lots of great feedback. Lots of leaks pointed out on
Polei. Lots of stuff I was not aware of.

The kick off was a really pretty 380SEL, burgundy with an ok interior. Some
young fellow got it for $500 and drove it in to the shop with a complaint of a
loud ticking in the engine. The valve covers were off and the cams and rockers
were on a table, with the replacement cams and rockers.

The ticking was caused by the lobes no longer being oval, but nubs, and the
rocker faces were worn down at least 6mm. The hex bolts took an hour of
cleaning to remove the crud in the holes so that a hex tool could be inserted.

No mention of any of the other fluids. Based on what the brake fluid looked
like (black as diesel oil), there was no maintenance done in at least five or
six years. Pretty sure the car had at least 25k miles since fluids were
serviced. The car only had 135k on the clock. At least it a double row chain.

I just did yesterday. Club event at local shop, we got to put cars in the air.

Fellow who has a red 220D that he keeps immaculate, showed up late. We have
been pals since I got Gump. He has all manner of manuals and deep research.

ANYWAY, he learned of this item and was thinking he needed the Mercedes Source
rebuild kit. Much money and instructions. Then he looked online (being big on
research) and the part is $18, no longer a rebuild item. It comes all as a
unit and is used on IP from 1965-1985 (OM617). I have no idea what it does,
but seems it needs replaced on my SD. Just because.

Re: [MBZ] I am an Idiot

2017-03-19 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I tied a bunch of knots in a heavy piece of rope so they made a big bundle, put
the bundle of knots under the ramp, laid the rest of the rope out so when I
drove up on the ramps the rope would be under the tires of the car. Once the
tire hit the front of the ramp the rope can't come through. Worked slicker than
snot when I had my 240D. The 190D needed a piece of 2x8 laid before the leading
edge of the ramp to get the front clip up over the ramp but that still worked
pretty good.

A couple of days ago, I was starting to change the differential gear oil
on the Big Red Van. I could roll under the van on a creeper, but it was
rather tight. So, I backed the van up onto two car ramps to increase the
clearance. At one point, I wasn't sure I was on top of the ramps, so I
backed up a little more. The rear wheels then went off the vertical end
of the ramps and bounced on the floor. Fortunately, the BRV has lots of
clearance, so it didn't touch the ramps when it came down. It was only
embarrasing, not damaging like it would have been if I had done this in
 the Benz ...

I make it with the ends of a beef tenderloin rather than short ribs. Yum.

In Korea they prepare this stuff right at the table on butane burners. The
cooks stand there and turn the beef while cutting it into smaller pieces with a

Re: [MBZ] Sunday's 300SEL Fun

2017-03-19 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Done.

Got everything back together without a great deal of effort. Tensioned the new
belt before tightening the 19mm bolt. Made a fan pulley holding tool from a
“J” hook and a pencil. Temporary, but now I have a template for a tool I can
make at a later date.

Still got a little squeal on startup which sounds like the air pump based on
the mechanic’s stethoscope. I may have to go to the pre-airpump engine belt
and just eliminate the air pump.

I’m done for the day, other than some cleaning up. Last big job will be the
driveshaft center bearing and the front flex disc. Bearing and carrier should
be here by Tuesday, but I expect I’ll do the job next weekend due to the amount
of time it will take.

Yesterday I pulled the injector set from The White Whale and mailed them back
to Mark Blevins to get the pressures set correctly.

I'm tempted to try cleaning up the two that had no heat shields, reinstall the
old set, and see how the car runs. That would be double work, but might
validate my theory, and the car wouldn't be sitting for several days waiting
for the injectors.

Just got done cleaning what I suspect was about a half pound of belt dressing
off the various pulleys. Oy!

I just figured there was some bits of old belt stuck in the grooves of some of
the pulleys, but when I went at the stuff with a small slotted screwdriver I
found that it was putty-like and quite sticky. Fortunately, brake cleaner
breaks it down well, so all of the pulleys got an initial scrape to remove what
I could and break up the surface, then a soaking in brake cleaner, another
scrape, another soak, then a brass brush run all the way around until the
grooves were clean.

Jeez, I even found the stuff on the outer edge of the fan pulley which the back
of the belt contacts. Grr.

A quick respite for some sustenance and back out for reassembly.

Re: [MBZ] Overseas shipping?

2017-03-19 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Somewhere in a city near you is a very specialized operation called a
"Freight Forwarder". Find them, because it is their specialty to know all
the customs issues, who ships what and on what schedule, for overseas
shipments.

They will charge for their services, but it will be money well spent to
have a professional handle customs clearance on both ends and shipping
arrangements.

Customs and Import people are VERY anal when it comes to having the correct
documents .. any little thing and your shipment gets set in "Customs
Impound" until it gets cleared up.. could take a month before you even find
where it's been sent to be held.. Government speed you know..

Over the past 30 years, I've spent thousands with Freight Forwarders and
Customs Clearance people and never regretted a dime of it.

Yeah, if there was a negative about my wooden ramps it would be that they’re
long, maybe 5’, and it makes it harder to get under the car some times. In
fact, I rarely drive on them, I usually just jack the car up and slide them
under the wheel. The bad part about that is that they’re so long I have to
turn them the opposite direction because otherwise I couldn’t get the jack
under the jack points on the rockers.

[MBZ] Sunday's 300SEL Fun

2017-03-19 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
No car stuff yesterday. I needed a mental health day from cars…

So this morning against my better judgement I figured I would replace the belt
tensioner on the 300SEL. I wasn’t looking forward to this job, as I recalled
it being a real PITA on the oldest son’s former 300E 2.6.

It was amazingly easy, almost scary in that regard, as I got it completely torn
apart in under 30 minutes.

So now I’ll go back out and clean parts and begin the reassembly. If anyone
has any pointers/suggestions on properly tensioning the belt on an M103 I’m all
ears. I’ve read what I can from the manuals and various forums, but none of it
seems that clear cut. I’ve got a new tensioner and a pointer for it, as the
old one had no pointer. The idler pulley on it was shot, that is, the bearing,
as it made a “ticking” noise when you spun it.

The belt that is on the engine is good, but I think I've got a new one. Gotta
dig around in the new parts inventory to see if it’s there. I’ll need to clean
all the pulleys on the engine and related components as the grooves are all
filled with cruft from either crud or a failed previous belt that left remnants
behind.

This is good. I feel a lot better about this now that it came apart so easily.

I’m going to check the fan clutch to make sure it’s full of fluid, too. If not
I’ll add some.

Yeah, that’s container shipment for sure. Probably about a month.

I’ve shipped big stuff overseas on a “space available” arrangement with DHL and
other carriers. If you call them up and talk to their logistics people they
will tell you how to do it. You don’t know whether the item will go in a
couple of days or weeks. It’s definitely not something I would do around the
holidays.

I shipped an 8kW marine generator (800 pounds, probably 2’ x 3’ x 6’ in a

relatively speaking.

I have made a couple of different sets out of 3/4" plywood. The 1st set was
taller and wider than most and was used for an old Chevy pickup. The newer set
has longer ramps so that they work with modern cars with low front valances.
The other benefit with them is that they are much easier to drive up onto so
one is less likely to drive too far forward. The only downside is that longer
ramps interfere more if one is trying to get under the car from the side. I
originally got the idea for these from a Hotrod or maybe CARCRAFT magazine back
about 1970.I have had the metal ramps too but they were too steep for my 86
Taurus so I gave them to my b-in-l and built the 2nd set noted above. Not sure
what became of the 1st set. They were out at the cottage for years but my
mother must have disposed of them in some manner.

I have wooden ramps made with 2x12 lumber stacked up in layers.  No way those

them sliding across the floor when I tried to drive up on them.

So that was my “I can’t believe I did that!” moment for the week. Or
hopefully, the month.

When I cranked up the OM616 I got from mao, I forgot to take out the
blue paper towel I had stuffed in the intake to keep the birds and the
bees out of the intake. It ran kind of rough for a while, and
eventually smoothed out. When I shut it off, the blue towel was on the
ground, somewhat shredded, having been spit out the exhaust manifold.
Somehow, it made the whole trip through the engine. 425 PSI can pretty
effectively blow it out I guess.

Holy mother of pearl! A differential?

If it’s going surface you’re looking at a good 3-4 weeks. That would be in a
containerized shipment. If it’s going air, maybe a week-10 days.

My Monark nozzles didn't take long, but I'm pretty sure they came by air.
I doubt that a differential would fly, it'll probably take the slow boat.
I'd say a month is a good bet, maybe a little longer. I think it is about
10 - 14 days for the transit between continents, and then you've got
customs on this side which adds a few more days.

you can also see those vortices when it's humid at F1 races as air is
forced across the rear wings when the cars are on long straights or

On the wake turbulence aspect, that is related to lift and how an
airplane wing actually works -- it causes a circulation of air around
the wing when it is developing lift, and that circulating air rolls
off the tip of the wing (you can see the tip vortices when it is
humid) and then turns straight back and expands as it goes further
back. You can see that effect too when a big plane lands as it kicks
up dust and stuff along the runway, then will abruptly stop when lift
stops. But that rotating air persists for quite some time for quite
some distance and can really mess up anything that gets in it. I
recall seeing a vid of a Lear Jet tucking up behind a bigger jet (747
maybe) and then all the sudden FULL ROLL!!! It was at altitude and
the pilot was prepared for it, so it was a planned maneuver but it was
scary crazy to see that.
