It's a one way pulley, keeps the alternator from pushing the engine and smooths
out the belt. Mine works, I needed a tool to move it to a new alternator...

If the key is still in the run position (position one) then you should be able
to insert two 2mm pins, sharpened with the angled face toward the inside, and
release the collar. The pins need to be inserted 4 cm to engage the release.

On a related note regarding eating the local wildlife, there have been

I think those have a one-way clutch, which smoothes out the alternator rotation
when at engine idle, so the belt doesn't jump so much. On the OM603 engines
and others with the serpentine belt, the change in belt jump at idle is
dramatic.

Re: [MBZ] Key shtuff.

2017-04-18 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Let me know if you'd like a couple pictures. Prior to removing the steering
column, use a big screw driver to twist the face of the ignition tumbler,
breaking a pin that holds the hardened face of the tumbler to the body that
holds the wafers. Once this face can be rotated, rotate it to the #1 position,
then pins can be inserted, but the collar probably will not release. If you've
been living right, the collar will release, but only if someone took it all
apart before and didn't put back the little levers and springs that lock the
collar. Simply inserting the pins is not enough, the tumbler body also needs
to be rotated, but I'm assuming it won't, thus all the cutting and grinding.

Loosen the steering column, drop it down a bit so you have more access. I used
a dremel tool cut off wheel to cut off the bottom half inch of the security
collar, so that it can be removed. Once that collar is off, with the pins
inserted, the tumbler comes out. (Note that I had plenty of access because I
cut the steering lock at the neck between column and ignition lock / switch
body, so I could rotate it around to get to all sides)

After the tumbler is out, a screwdriver can be used to rotate the switch to the
#1 position, then the wiring harness connector on the back of the switch will
pull out.

After the wiring harness connector is out, the three screws that hold the
switch to the steering lock can be removed, and the ignition switch separated
from the steering lock.

If you also need to remove the steering lock (if it is the failed component, or
you damaged it during an earlier step) the pin holding the steering lock in the
column is ground down, and the steering lock pulled out of the column. I
removed the steering column for this step. Drastic, but made the grinding part
much easier.

I thought the real problem was when you turned it off and needed to turn

Wriggle, shake, twist, usually you can get it to turn one more time. You only
need to get it to the #1 position (unlocked but nothing on) to get the tumbler

First for both. Maine charges you for the turkey tag and then a fee for each
bird to the point it wasn't worth it. Mass is a $5 tag, register the birds
online.
A friend would like some turkeys removed from his backyard so its a service to
him. The season starts a week from yesterday but I won't be able to hunt the
first day as I forgot to get my mandatory "don't shoot other hunters" safety
sticker what must be affixed to the barrel of my gun.

Yes, I forgot to put that in the prior post. If it is stuck ON, all you
need to do is unscrew the kryptonite outer cover that hols in the tumbler.

Then you can turn it on an off with a screwdriver until the new tumbler
arrives, or dump the wafers out of the old tumbler and put it back in
forever or until you put the new tumbler in.

I'll be turkey hunting next week. Got to spend some time with my
muzzle loading shotgun last Tuesday. Bit of a humbling experience, I'd
thought it was an 18 gauge which is unusual but not unheard of. The
muzzle measures .635" which is bigger than 20ga but smaller than 16.I
had bought some 18ga wads but they won't hold tight in the barrel so
the pellets were falling back out... I used some wadded up newspaper
which worked pretty well. I've ordered some 16ga ones that I'll try
next week. On paper it patterns well enough with the newspaper that I
ought to be able to take out a turkey out to 20 yards or so. Hopefully
with better wads I'll be able to go farther out.

Re: [MBZ] Key shtuff.

2017-04-18 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
All you really need to do after what Max said is to drill out the pin
that holds the steering lock in Once that pin is released, loosen the
clamp holding the steering lock on the column; then you remove the whole
steering lock. Then you can grind to split off the kryptonite shell
around the tumbler.

This step can be done in place to make removing the steering lock
easier, (first choice) or can be done after you have removed the
steering lock assembly. (second choice) If the key is still stuck on,
remove the 3 screws that hold in the electric switch on. It will come
right off if the key is in the "on" position. If they key is stuck
"off, the don't do this step until the tumbler is out of the steering
lock so the steering lock can be turned to the "ON" position so the
electric switch can be removed.

Here is hoping the vibrating sander works!

Max Dillon via Mercedes
April 18, 2017 at 6:00 PM
If the vibrator trick doesn't work, and you're prepared to start
cutting, remove kick panel, instrument cluster, and loosen the two
bolts holding steering column to dash support. Remove the brace on
right side of steering column that goes under the ignition / steering
lock and blocks the access you'll need for cutting.

Re: [MBZ] OT Land Shark - low country style

2017-04-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I'll be turkey hunting next week. Got to spend some time with my muzzle loading
shotgun last Tuesday. Bit of a humbling experience, I'd thought it was an 18
gauge which is unusual but not unheard of. The muzzle measures .635" which is
bigger than 20ga but smaller than 16.I had bought some 18ga wads but they won't
hold tight in the barrel so the pellets were falling back out... I used some
wadded up newspaper which worked pretty well. I've ordered some 16ga ones that
I'll try next week. On paper it patterns well enough with the newspaper that I
ought to be able to take out a turkey out to 20 yards or so. Hopefully with
better wads I'll be able to go farther out.

If the vibrator trick doesn't work, and you're prepared to start cutting,
remove kick panel, instrument cluster, and loosen the two bolts holding
steering column to dash support. Remove the brace on right side of steering
column that goes under the ignition / steering lock and blocks the access
you'll need for cutting.

Re: [MBZ] scan tools

2017-04-18 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The best scanning tool will always be one that is particular to the vehicle. I
bought the VCDS cable for my VWs which is outstanding and allows not only
scanning of issues but changing of parameters like injection timing and
speedometer offset for different tire sizes.
I know Dan has talked about the MB one in the past and I presume its similar.

 Subject: [MBZ] scan tools

Anyone have any reliable info on scan tools?

We need something better than the basic models. I had a very basic one
that would show codes and permit resets. I bought a better one that will
give data when the engine is running etc but it is still not enough.

I am reluctant to spend $1000 plus to get the sort that the shops use.
Wondered about software that would feed into a laptop but looking online
does not appear to show me much that would be any less expensive and be
more useful than what we have.

I told the story about the smoke generator and my son's issues with the
old Supercrew last week. The smoke did not show any significant vacuum
leak as suspected. A better scan tool borrowed by a friend  showed a
misfire on #5 and changing coils seems to have solved the problem. The
truck did not have a check engine light on and no codes were shown on
the scan tool that I have., so now a better scan tool is being considered.

My son was reluctant to keep driving it for fear it might do some harm.
Our scan tool was showing that the fuel trim was off - apparently
dumping more fuel in as it showed a lean condition.

I now wonder if he had continued to drive it, if it would have
ultimately produced a code that showed us a misfire on #5. I had some
issues with that truck years ago relating to the Coils and had to drive
it a considerable distance on a couple of occasions to get home where I
could sort it out. Those instances did not appear to do it any harm as
that is likely 60K miles or more back.

Re: [MBZ] OT - 2015 Jetta 2.0 Diesels

2017-04-18 Thread Kevin Kraly via Mercedes
Yes, these are brand-new 2015 TDI diesel's that have never been sold. I have
decided to take the buyback offer on my 2014 beetle convertible TDI and pick up
one of these 2015's. I was even able to find one that was the exact same color
with only 35 miles on it, but it's in Houston!! Road trip!! The price I was
quoted was $5000 off the sticker if it is financed through VW, and $8000 if it
is leased! My nephew and I are flying to Houston next Thursday, and driving it
home over the weekend. Since I will still have the 2014, I will be able to swap
over the wheels and upgraded tires to the 2015. I could not pass up the deal!

Re: [MBZ] scan tools

2017-04-18 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Those cheap dongles can read and report various parameters to a
smartphome app but that might not be enough for what you/he want to do.
But for the $10 or $15 from chinee sources like DX or banggood it would
be worth a try. You can check out the details of the apps too before
you buy them (they have free basic and paid version with more
capabilities). I looked into those a few months back so don't remember
much about them since it has fallen to the bottom of my stack.

Not quite the same thing, but I do understand your response to the
engine. My F150 has the 5.0 Coyote engine and it sure makes a nice growl
when I step on the gas a bit harder than normal. I can imagine what that
must be like in the Mustang. The truck is rated at something like 370 HP
but I think the Mustang is up to about 415 HP. My son who used to work
in the shop that did custom work says they had a Mustang that they did
some work on that was putting out something over 500 HP.

I’m telling you the guys on Benzworld that own these are totally nutz about
them. It would be cool to have that 5.6 liter engine in a smaller/lighter
chassis than the sedan. I suspect you can get pushed back in your seat with
minimal effort…

If there was a negative it’s that some of the parts are unique to the chassis,
like headlights, so finding replacements or Euro versions is tough. A minor
issue at best.

Re: [MBZ] Rebuilt CVJ Axle - 1st Gen W126

HOW LOW WILL YOU GO? WILL YOU FINANCE FOR PAYDAY?

I have a rebuilt axle from CVJ, the premiere axle rebuilder, that fits a first gen W126,
specifically a 1984 300SD. You need to verify the application/fitment with CVJ BEFORE you
buy this axle. It's a CVJ part number A74310 and fits a 1984 300SD, that I know. What
other W126 1st gen models it fits I don't know, so this is your responsibility to
determine in advance. You can email CVJ with your application information and they’ll
get back to you typically the same day. This has the original homokinetic
"can" style joints - the good original ones, and is an original Mercedes axles
that CVJ has rebuilt.

It’s worth $200 shipped, which precludes return shipping and/or your core
charge. I’ll sell it here for $175 shipped if anyone is interested, or
consider a swap for W123 or W126 stuff of equal value, like a set of W123 steel
wheels and covers…

Looking at the number of cars in the background with covers on them, this
seller is probably pretty good with their cars.

Re: [MBZ] Tie rod goodness

Glad that ended well. Two alignments ago, I had to replace a tie rod assembly,
dealer had it in stock for $70. I was shocked!
