Not to mention Long Beach is a hole. How many towns in major cities are there
where can you live next to a working oil well?

I mentioned the thing about Jersey, as I was surprised when I took a field trip
from a customer’s place in Union and went to visit a friend who lived in
Neshanic. I had no idea. I was of the impression that New Jersey was a heavily
industrialized place that was shabby and smelly. What was even more amazing
was that you didn’t have to go that far to get into the boonies.

Re: [MBZ] W126 AC Rebuild

2017-07-01 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Sort of. Rebuilding the major hose assembly was half the cost of new. They
could have rebuilt the others, but I don’t think it would have been as cost
effective. New compressor cost me about $225 including an expansion valve and
receiver/dryer.

But I’ve got a hard stop now…

Poop.

Looks like I'm done until Monday. I got the compressor out and everything
swapped over to the new compressor. I was sighting the manifold that I had
rebuilt by my local industrial hose place and thought, "Gee, that fitting to
the condenser doesn't look right."

That's because they assembled the new hose with the fitting to the condenser
off by 180 degrees. Dang it!

So I've got a hard stop until I can take it back to them and get it fixed.
They'll have to cut the crimp off, rotate the fitting, and recrimp it. Not a
big deal to do, but it really sucks as I was just about to close up the system
and start pulling a vacuum.

So the thread will be suspended until Monday, I guess. Good thing I took the
day off.

Re: [MBZ] W126 AC Rebuild

2017-07-01 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
New from receiver/dryer to expansion valve, expansion valve to fitting on false
firewall. Total was about $170 new from Mercedes. Manifold that connects to
the compressor has two hoses on it, had the whole thing rebuilt at Amazon Hose
here in Tampa and it cost me $150. It goes from fitting on false firewall to
compressor, compressor to condenser. New assembly from Mercedes would have
been about $320 my cost and the only one they had was in Germany, so it would
have been a week to get it. Amazon rebuilt my hose in a day.

Hose from condenser to receiver/dryer was included with condenser.

So all hoses have been replaced with new barrier style hose. All new O rings,
of course, too.

Thanks for posting that! Last night my daughter asked "What was the Alamo,

Aux fan arrangement is a little sketchy, but I think it will work out OK as

Re: [MBZ] Today's history lesson

2017-07-01 Thread Mountain Man via Mercedes
“Mr. Speaker — I have as much respect for the memory of the deceased,
and as much sympathy for the suffering of the living, if suffering
there be, as any man in this house, but we must not permit our respect
for the dead or our sympathy for a part of the living to lead us into
an act of injustice to the balance of the living. I will not go into
an argument to prove that Congress has no power to appropriate this
money as an act of charity. Every member upon this floor knows it. We
have the right, as individuals, to give away as much of our own money
as we please in charity; but as members of Congress we have no right
so to appropriate a dollar of the public money. Some eloquent appeals
have been made to us upon the ground that it is a debt due the
deceased. Mr. Speaker, the deceased lived long after the close of the
war; he was in office to the day of his death, and I have never heard
that the government was in arrears to him.
“Every man in this House knows it is not a debt. We cannot, without
the grossest corruption, appropriate this money as the payment of a
debt. We have not the semblance of authority to appropriate it as a
charity. Mr. Speaker, I have said we have the right to give as much
money of our own as we please. I am the poorest man on this floor. I
cannot vote for this bill, but I will give one week’s pay to the
object, and, if every member of Congress will do the same, it will
amount to more than the bill asks.
“He took his seat. Nobody replied. The bill was put upon its passage,
and, instead of passing unanimously, as was generally supposed, and
as, no doubt, it would, but for that speech, it received but few
votes, and of course, was lost.
“Later, when asked by a friend why he had opposed the appropriation,
Crockett gave this explanation:
“Several years ago I was one evening standing on the steps of the
Capitol with some other members of Congress, when our attention was
attracted by a great light over in Georgetown. It was evidently a
large fire. We jumped into a hack and drove over as fast as we could.
In spite of all that could be done, many houses were burned and many
families made homeless, and, besides, some of them had lost all but
the clothes they had on. The weather was very cold, and when I saw so
many women and children suffering, I felt that something ought to be
one for them. The next morning a bill was introduced appropriating
$20,000 for their relief. We put aside all other business and rushed
it through as soon as it could be done.
“The next summer, when it began to be time to think about the
election, I concluded I would take a scout around among the boys of my
district. I had no opposition there, but, as the election was some
time off, I did not know what might turn up. When riding one day in a
part of my district in which I was more a stranger than any other, I
saw a man in a field plowing and coming toward the road. I gauged my
gait so that we should meet as he came to the fence. As he came up, I
spoke to the man. He replied politely, but, as I thought, rather
coldly.
“I began: ‘Well, friend, I am one of those unfortunate beings called
candidates, and–‘
” ‘Yes, I know you; you are Colonel Crockett. I have seen you once
before, and voted for you the last time you were elected. I suppose
you are out electioneering now, but you had better not waste your time
or mine. I shall not vote for you again.’
“This was a sockdolager… I begged him to tell me what was the matter.
” ‘Well, Colonel, it is hardly worth-while to waste time or words upon
it. I do not see how it can be mended, but you gave a vote last winter
which shows that either you have not capacity to understand the
Constitution, or that you are wanting in the honesty and firmness to
be guided by it. In either case you are not the man to represent me.
But I beg your pardon for expressing it in that way. I did not intend
to avail myself of the privilege of the constituent to speak plainly
to a candidate for the purpose of insulting or wounding you. I
intended by it only to say that your understanding of the Constitution
is very different from mine; and I will say to you what, but for my
rudeness, I should not have said, that I believe you to be honest….But
an understanding of the Constitution different from mine I cannot
overlook, because the Constitution, to be worth anything, must be held
sacred, and rigidly observed in all its provisions. The man who wields
power and misinterprets it is the more dangerous the more honest he
is.’
“I admit the truth of all you say, but there must be some mistake
about it, for I do not remember that I gave any vote last winter upon
any Constitutional question.
” ‘No, Colonel, there’s no mistake. Though I live here in the
backwoods and seldom go from home, I take the papers from Washington
and read very carefully all the proceedings in Congress. My papers say
that last winter you voted for a bill to appropriate $20,000 to some
suffers by a fire in Georgetown. Is that true?’

2017-07-01 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Independence Day is an annual opportunity to reflect on the unique
founding and blessed history of our great nation. The parades, picnics,
baseball games, apple pies, and fireworks displays are like a national
family reunion, reminding us of our shared heritage as American citizens.
In many ways, we are the beneficiaries of sacrifices made by great men
and women who went before us. The signers of the Declaration, and the
framers of the Constitution, understood that they were establishing a
new model with no guarantee of success. It has been the duty of each
subsequent generation to embrace the sacrifices required to preserve the
benefits for those who would come behind.
Leaning on each other, and looking to God for direction, the Founders
crafted a system that empowers people to govern themselves, enables
individuals to follow their dreams, and that enshrines liberty for all.
America was founded on enduring principles that are strong enough to
withstand even our deepest political and ideological divisions, unless
we abandon the foundation itself.
The future prosperity and tranquility of America falls to each of us,
just as it has for every generation before us. It was George Washington

who asserted that the federal government "can never be in danger of
degenerating into a monarchy, an oligarchy, an aristocracy, or any other
despotic or oppressive form so long as there shall remain any virtue in
the body of the people."
The notes of Dr. James McHenry
,
who was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1787, quote
Benjamin Franklin responding to a question about the type of government
we have here in America. According to Franklin, we have "a republic...
*/if you can keep it/*."
Even as we celebrate this week, let's recommit to doing our part to
preserve the republic for future generations.

Happy Independence Day!

Not to go to Long Beach. Trust me, New Jersey is heaven compared to Long Beach.
And I’m betting you haven’t seen the parts of New Jersey where Jaime lives.
It’s not a lot different from rural areas around you - quite pastoral. Most
people picture Jersey as the nasty industrialized areas around NYC or Philly -
most of the state is quite nice, but few get past the ugly parts.

Sort of, but not completely. MBUSA moved parts of their operations to
Atlanta. I don't work for MBUSA, but MBRDNA... our work is moving to Long
Beach, CA.

Re: [MBZ] W126 AC Rebuild

2017-07-01 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Just got the fittings on the expansion valve tightened and the hoses routed
through the false firewall and put all of that together. Whew! I won't put
the interior back together until I've been able to test the system in the event
I have issues with the expansion valve fittings, which I don't expect.

Next I'll be draining the cooling system so I can remove the radiator and
install the new parallel flow condenser. Pretty straightforward job and
doesn't involve getting down on my hands and knees much, thank goodness.

After that will be the compressor swap and the installation of the remaining
lines and receiver/dryer. If I’m living right I might have this thing back
together by the end of the day. It’s wicked hot and humid here today, so I’m
pacing myself to prevent getting overheated…

Re: [MBZ] Car for Jaime

2017-07-01 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
I'm still employed through the end of July... I just turned down an offer
from MB to stay. It would have involved a huge amount of travel and time
away from the family, with little opportunity to advancement without
relocation. I turned the offer down on Monday and they came back and asked
me to stay until the end of July to finish up some projects. So, I'll be
unemployed in August. Looking forward to the break, but its sad to leave
Mercedes.

AH! THERE you have hit one one of the few authorized powers of the

planet that people are dying to get into, legally or not, should have

Correct, they should not fund NIH, unless it can be done constitutionally
under the heading of national security / defense.

Anything other spending should probably require a national referendum vote
to approve the funding, which expires annually and requires another
national referendum vote to re-approve it.  THEN the taxpayers will be able
to decide if they want to spend their money on it or not.  Good ideas and
worthy causes will get funded.  Stupid pet projects (pork) will quickly

Walker still makes some older stuff. I was able to source a resonator for the
300SEL from them and it was exact fit and far cheaper than anyone else. I even
got the production drawings for it and checked the dimensions and they matched
the OE part exactly. I think the price on it was like $175.00 or thereabouts.

I’m not saying they have something for a car that old, but it’s possible. When
I was looking for the 300SEL resonator I was surprised at the number of older
applications they still had stuff for.

Re: [MBZ] Okie Acres Miami?

2017-07-01 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I did business down there in the late 90s from an office in Pompano Beach.
There was a boatload of business in Dade County we never saw, so the company’s
owner wanted me to go down there and try and get some of it - mostly
government/municipal stuff.

I called on a purchasing guy in Dade County government. He laughed at me when I
said we wanted to do business with the County. He pretty much told me that the
likelihood of gringos like me doing business there would never happen. Even if
we tried to buy the business (lowball) they would throw us out because we
didn’t have a business presence in the County. He went so far as to
congratulate me for having the biggest pair of cohones he had ever seen on a
gringo for coming in and thinking we could do business there. So I had that
going for me…

It’s so bad that our company’s territory was the whole state of Florida except
Dade County. There was a Cuban refugee that owned a company in Miami who was
our distributor there, and that’s the only territory he had. That gives you
some idea of how completely different the economy and culture is down there.
I’m sure it hasn’t changed.

Let me get this straight. You are saying the NIH should not be funding
biomedical research, because of a document written in the 18th century?

Yes, the point I am making is that it is proper for the government to
subsidize technology development.

Re: [MBZ] big oil dying (again)

2017-07-01 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
The federal government spends money on lots of things that are not
immediately profitable. That is pretty much the role of the government.
Computers, lasers, the internet, gps, etc. Much of this is done by funding
basic science through NIH, a bunch by funding defense work by the Navy and
Darpa, and much of that does not pan out commercially. But enough of it
does to make it fully worthwhile.

Solar energy would not be approaching cost parity with gas etc if the
government had not invested in the market. A bunch of private equity is
funding local solar power development in Africa right now, because it is
cheaper than building transmission lines, which have the 100 year head
start but still never managed to get developed. So solar is coming along,
and is already cheaper here than increasing our US power rates to build
power plants that we don't actually need (see LA times article). You pay
one way or the other.

The Chinese are actually investing more than we are in nuclear fusion,
which spurred us into action on it. I do not think we want them to figure
it out first, as this would be a massive strategic disadvantage for the US.

Most major advances in technology are funded in one way or another by the
government. Your tax dollars at work.

I can't believe you guys are missing the obvious. The energy answer is the
"flux capacitor". We can convert garbage to energyand we all know we
have way too much garbage in this world. Or maybe the methanol out of
landfills and convert it to synthetic diesel. Or maybe something that
hasn't been thought of yet. I still remember when solar would be the
answer, then wind, then coal gasification, and so on. We probably need a
mix a many things, but most of all those things need to pay for themselves
without expecting the average taxpayer to fund someone else's energy.
Remember the company a few years back that got $650 million from the
government and then went belly up?
Keep looking. Similar to the X Files, the answer is out there.
