Re: [MBZ] Bonanza

2017-08-10 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
If you mention bazooka, most people think of the shoulder held "rocket"
launcher first used in WW-2, but the very first bazooka was a horn made out of
plumbing parts, and then out of stove pipes and a whiskey funnel and invented
by a variety radio host named Bob Burns from Arkansas. WW-2 soldiers adopted
the name for their "tank killer".

Kaleb might have heard his parents or grandparents mention Bob Burns and the
bazooka. People who heard the bazooka played said it would be more effective on
the battle field than the army version. Since it sounded so terrible, the
Germans would have surrendered by the hundreds.

Yes, my response was not clear - no, I sold them so that I would not have

hence the new cars to buy me time before I have to work on them.

Which is pretty much why pro mechanics drive Toyota's and Honda's. They fix

But, as I mentioned in my reply to Max, I need to take some stuff to

No, this engine has an oil filter cannister like an OM617. It's at the
rear of the engine and has a lid with a central rod which lifts off.

I have moved the connector for the oil pressure sensor at the base of the
filter and wiggled the harness which, I think, contains the wire from the
sensor to the gauge. That seems to help a little, with the gauge
sometimes bouncing from zero to pegged.

So, I think, something is wrong with the wire between the sensor and the
gauge. How that went wrong and how I might fix it are then the questions.

Like Mitch said, that sounds like the wire between the sender and the gauge is

Re: [MBZ] Now what do I do?

2017-08-10 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Next step is remove the seat control switch (two Philips head screws).

After that, the rod that attaches to the door handle pull needs to be lifted up
and out of its hole in the door handle.

The door handle and the plastic surround behind it can be pushed forward and
removed.

NOW you should be able to lift the door panel up and remove.

(You did remove the door lock knob, right?)

I looked and didn't see anything -- the door speaker housing is
immediately below the armrest.

BUT I now have a more pressing problem:

I just changed the oil and filter, as well as disconnecting the battery

When I went to start the engine, I noticed the oil pressure gauge pegged

We're thinking of the same thing, our camp sleeps 5 comfortably, 6 if two
people share the double bed. If you've got a bunch of snorers the walls can
shake...The attached bunkhouse is 10x12, we've talked about building a detached
bunkhouse, probably 10x12 again, enough space for four more bunks with some
space for bags and to sit.
I'm not sure its something we really need but Dad likes the idea, its his money
anyway...

I have thought about creating another bunkie. My idea was to make a unit

One of the issues would be height as if we ever wanted to haul it out of
there, it would have to go through the carport side of the garage. The
travel trailer was backed into its existing spot by going through the
carport and it just cleared so it could not be any taller than the
original trailer. So, the thought was to make the part on the top of a
caboose with the windows removable so that the trailer could still be
removed if that became desirable.

Not going to happen any time soon but maybe some day if I do not just
make it into a flatbed trailer to haul stuff. Would not be heavy duty
enough to haul cars without a lot of extra work but to haul lesser
items, it would be fairly doable.

I would assume so, but doing the math they come out small.
You're not going to make 8' walls out of those for $50 a running foot as I
usually expect.

I'm used to seeing around $17-18 for 48x16, or 5 1/3 square feet of wall, like

Re: [MBZ] Bonanza

2017-08-10 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I have been thinking about cutting the cord but it sounds like too much hassle.
I just like setting things to record and watching them later. I cut my dish
package down to the lowest they offer which gives me about all the channels I
watch anyway. It cut channels others in the house like. Oh well.

What I've always found amusing was that the guy who turned me on to Ren &
Stimpy and Bevis & Butthead was my boss at Kohler. At the time he was a 60+
year old guy who you would never have guessed watched this stuff. He had
college aged kids at home who got him hooked.

I was in my 30s at the time, on the road, going to school and with two small
kids, so my TV viewing was severely limited at the time. If it hadn't been for
him pointing these out to me I probably would never have seen them.

Re: [MBZ] OT Tractor/trailer trailer size

2017-08-10 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
Good info, thanks. I kinda like the idea of having a fairly strong
structure already built and dry, and the dimensions are quite spacious.
Spray some foam on the walls with a bit of furring for wiring and yer
good ta go. I guess if one wanted to modify it a bit, a little cutting
and welding or riveting or something would do the trick.

I was talking to a guy a coupla months ago who has a spray foam
business, he said he does a lot of shipping containers like that, people
use them for shops, offices, housing, etc, he said it works out well.

The other idea was to build on the low-boy, use SIPs for construction,
with the wings it could go to 10-12ft wide, that would be quick and easy
to get a structure up, a lot pre-fabbed in the shop, that could be about
the same size or even bigger than your moving van trailer.

Or go the full route like you have, get the trailer and a tractor and
outfit it and make a space for a car or two and toys and be completely
mobile.

Musings...

Yup.

So then I was thinking one of those low-floor moving van trailers would
be even better, more headroom, loft space.

Yes. The inside height of most of our 51' drop-frame furniture van is
121". The front, where the trailer attaches to the tractor's fifth wheel
is 18" less than that (103").

We have added a deck and stairs to utilize the upper volume of our
trailer, so we can have boxes above and large things (like a car)
underneath.

Containers I think are up to 40ft for a double?

Yes, and you can get "high cube" containers, which are taller than
standard containers.

And some of those equipment trailers have wings that fold out to give
maybe 12ft wide for a wide load, so that would allow a larger "tiny"
house, I guess moving it would require some permit or something but
still...

Yes, you would need an oversize permit. Most likely something 12 feet
wide would be restricted to travel during daylight hours and also require
an escort vehicle.

So that got me thinking about how tall a trailer can be, I'm thinking
maybe 12ft max to clear bridges and stuff on the road, or can they go a
bit higher?

Generally allowable height is 13' 6", though some states (like Texas)
allow them to be 14' high. Note that the driver is always responsible
for not hitting things.

I see those big trailers driving with a pace car with a pole to
hit something before the truck would, and warn it off the bridge or
whatever. I guess if you weren't hauling a taller "tiny" house too
far you could get by with something taller?

You could, but then you get into all the permits/escort vehicle stuff.

My lunch-time musings, but ideas accepted. I'm wondering if there
would be a market for larger "tiny" houses built to a spec that was
much better than your average single-wide.

I don't know how one would determine the size of the market. Build it and
they will come?

2017-08-10 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
I live less than a mile from the largest antenna farm of terrestrial stations
on the west coast of Florida. I believe there are no less than 60 licensed
channels transmitting at the site, based on the work I used to do there in my
previous career:

http://antennaweb.org/Stations?Address=Valrico%2C%20FL%2033596%2C%20United%20States=False=27.8825312=-82.2474648

In other words, I can get most of these stations in my fillings.

All jokes aside, I have a homemade bow tie dipole antenna in the closet of my
home office that's connected to a TV card in my Mac. I can watch all sorts of
good programming for free on my cheesegrater.

I would cut the cord in a split second, but the spouse is a hard core TV addict
and insists on having hundreds of channels at her beck and call. Ain't gonna
happen.

There are two channels that run on our cable system with old programming: METV
and another channel I think is called "Decades".

METV runs most of what you list, as well as a bunch of obscure stuff. I've
watched the Dick Cavett show on Decades a couple of times, mainly due to the
guest he had on. One time it was George Harrison and Ravi Shankar. It was
pretty cool to watch, and Cavett was a good host, too.

Perry Mason is a staple in our house. I'm betting I've seen every episode at
least twice, but they're still entertaining. The original Bob Newhart is also
a favorite when it's running.

If you like Lawrence Welk, you'll love this:
