[MBZ] 560 SEL

2017-10-28 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
The heat control has been flaky for some time, and as things cool down
it's getting more critical. Just the lightest touch on the control
wheel would make it cut in and out. (The monovalve LED I added some
time ago is really crucial for this kind of diagnostic.) Today I
finally made some time and removed the ACC panel. I removed the
potentiometer from the PCB and opened it up. It's custom, no way to
come up with a replacement, except out of another unit. I cleaned it
out, and used DeOxIt fader spray on it, and did a very light
wire-brushing of the circular tracks and the sliding metal fingers.
According to my meter, the resistance change is smooth, with no
intermittency. We'll see if this works any better. While I was there
I added another LED, this one for showing AC energization, behind the
center button. I used the other LED from the same toy, but used the
blue side for this function. I used another 680 ohm resistor from the
junk box, and hooked the series combination between the X1-7 (Klima)
pin and power. Also, one of the two illumination lamps was
intermittent, so I replaced it with a new one. All this took a little
over two hours. On the test drive today it behaved well, but as it
was a warm day nothing much was proven. The next cold morning drive
should be more definitive.

Re: [MBZ] 2007 E350 no start

2017-10-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Crankshaft position sensor? While I know you didn’t say there was a code for
it, that is a very common "cranks but no start” reason on earlier model engines.

I just googled your complaint and this came up:

https://repairpal.com/mercedes-benz-e350-2007/problems

CPS is one of the common complaints for this problem.

I would also be looking at fuel pressure, too. Bad fuel pump can cause similar
symptoms.

This is another reason to stick with the 617s. These things are electrical
electronic and not designed to be easily serviced. And all cheap plastic bits
everywhere. Disposable and degradable. Sad.

The seat switch wasn’t moving the seat well so I got another one at the
knackers. Replaced it this afternoon, fairly easy job as the door panel just
has a coupla screws and the push-in plastic spiny rivets so it pops off easy
enough. The new switch isn’t moving it either so now I’m thinking it must be
relays in there somewhere as the switch and wires are cheap and flimsy, minimal
stuff, they must just be switching relays. Who knows where all that stuff might
be.

Man the 123s and 126s are looking better and better.

[MBZ] 2007 E350 no start

2017-10-28 Thread Tom Savage via Mercedes
Hi everyone, long time no see.

A friend has a 2007 E350 wagon M272 with 140k miles that won't fire, it
just cranks and cranks. I pulled codes and it shows P0011 cam timing, bank
1 position A (intake); P0271 Powertain, which google says is associated
with the first code; and P0521 Oil pressure switch.

I checked the cam solenoid magnet and it had the common failure mode of oil
leaking through the connector at the top, so I installed a new one from the
dealer this morning. Still no start.

Anyone familiar with these engines? I keep reading about balance shaft
problems, but I'm not sure if that will cause a no start like this.

The P0521 looks like it may actually be a stuck flap in the intake
manifold, but I'm not seeing any association with a no start. This is hard
without a manual or proper diagnostic equipment!

Any ideas?

Thanks,

[MBZ] E300 dizzel codes

2017-10-28 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

OK it looks like my HF code reader picked up 4 codes off the OBDII port:

P0380

P1369

P0100

P0400

Details below but looks like

P0380 is a bad glow plug or relay or something

P1369 looks like a bad glow plug #5 or 6

P0100 Bad mass air flow sensor  ($178 cleaner $7)

P0400 EGR malfunction (EGR valve maybe?  or relay or solenoid or
something? Or maybe just a vacuum leak per below)

It seems that changing GPs on this car is a complete PITA but I guess
that is what is needed if the relay is passing juice.  I think it is as
the car will start though the battery seems to be running down fairly
quickly after sitting a few days, I'm wondering if something is stuck
pulling electrons.

Looks like a little diagnosis time...

P0380 Glow Plug/Heater Circuit “A” Malfunction

P1369 Engine Temperature Light Monitor Failure

Does the temp light come on when you start the car? I think it is on, on
my car during the glow period. It's a red light that looks like a
thermometer next to the temp gauge.

P1 369 is for a bad Glow Plug as posted!!

I thought P1_369 was a bad #5 or 6 GP???

Is your GP light on?

I had a glow plug go bad it was #5 plug (code P1369, #5 cyl Ign cir
short) I changed all the plugs & also Glowplug relay (I messed this up
during my checking trying to undo a tight nut on power supply) but the
check engine light is still on with still the same code. Will this
eventually go out or is this a dealer reset situation.

   Code P1369 - 5cyl - ignition circuit short to ground - Would
anybody be willing to explain what it means and how to fix it.
   Thank you.

That is self-explanatory, the ignition key is grounding out, it
probably needs to be replaced. What is the car doing?

I am getting the following errors.

P0380---faulty glow plug relay

P1369---faulty glow plug

My questions is are both bad or is one causing the other? Each morning
the glow plug light functions properly for the first start but after
that it give the error each time. I hate to spend the money on a relay
if the plugs are the problem but I also hate to change the plugs if its
just the relay. Is there any way to know which it is or if it is both?
Would really like to fix this before winter sets in.
I have been down this road several times with my 99 E300-TD and, to my
mind, the only solution is to do whatever is necessary to prevent future
occurences. This is a very expensive, but necessary, maintenance item.
Approximately each 100k km I have experienced these symptoms and have
concluded that one or more glow plug is faulty. Given the labour to
remove and replace the glow plugs, I change all six plugs, even though
only one or two have failed. On the last visit, at @ 300k km, the relay
was found to be "intermittent" and was also changed. This is about a
$1000 proposition but, to my mind, cheaper that the 3-4 major tune ups
that an equivalent gasoline engine would have required during the same
100km.
That is why I would check the resistance of the individual glow plugs
first! If they check out, then test the relay.

At first glance I can't see how the glow plug fault would fault the
relay. The relay is either on for a period of time and passes voltage
then off or it's always off or always on, both of the later create
faults. Good luck
the car computer can sense something wrong with the circuit, but can not
pinpoint the bad item. That what multimeter is for.
If the engine starts fine in the morning, that is indication at least
some plugs work, meaning the relay is good.
so if the relay tests fine it could be throwing the code only because of
the plugs or vice versa? just want to get an idea if i will probably
need to replace the relay no matter what or if there is a chance it is
ok and the plugs are just confusing it.
Those systems are fool proof. The relay is either open or closed,
voltage does not get to the glow plug(s) or regardless of key position
voltage is on and your battery drains.

You must test each glow plugs resistance, if they are low say 6-8 ohms
they are still good. Then test the voltage at the relay, with the key in
0 and 2. If you get 12V with key at zero--whoops. If you
get 12V after car runs for three minutes--whoops.

The relay is about 150 bucks.

No joke. I did get the monovalve replaced in the SDL. It’s a pain getting to

ones but this one has some sort of diagnostic port right above it limiting the
room I had to get my hands down in there.

Re: [MBZ] Valve adjustment

2017-10-28 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
It’s been sitting for a week cold. Just finished the adjustment. Took me a
couple of valves to get back in the groove of it. It’s probably been 10 years
since I have done a valve adjustment on one of these. I looked at chain stretch
and it is right on the mark at tdc, so no chain stretch. Cams lobs look like
new. Amazing. Anyway, I am looking at the belts now and they actually look
good, but I am thinking I need to replace them as well.

Re: [MBZ] Window rubbers

2017-10-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Simple. Then he should consult Dave’s list and buy from one of the online
dealers.

I can’t stress this enough, I would never, ever buy a windshield seal or window
seal from anyone but Mercedes. They are highly engineered parts that are
difficult to copy at best. Add to that the ease in which a manufacturer can
cut corners when formulating the rubber used which will cause it to age out in
a very short time.

Buy a URO. Look under the edge at the 6:00 position for the MB part number.
It won’t be there. Look in the lower corners for the little “third lip” on the
seal. It won’t be there. Try stretching it out a bit. You’ll see voids and
cracks in the rubber.

Re: [MBZ] Window rubbers

2017-10-28 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes

I see 3 possibilities here, assuming ÜRO is the new OEM for 123 windshield
seals:

1. Mercedes quality control forces ÜRO to make seals from the proper rubber,
not from molten mouse droppings, and ÜRO sells the same quality to the
aftermarket.

2. Mercedes get the good ones from ÜRO, aftermarket still gets overpriced
mouse droppings.

3. Mercedes starmarked seals are now made from mouse turds.

If 1, buy ÜRO.
If 2, buy OE.
If 3, hunt down the newest production Febi you can find.
Mitch.

Re: [MBZ] How do you know when you monovalve is bad?

2017-10-28 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
I find mine in a box in my office. Fixing to head out to replace that, then do
an oil change on the 240d. Will probably install the new set of tires I bought
for the other 240d but this one is about ready to be put on the road. Probably
should do a valve adjustment while I’m at it. No telling when that has been
done. It’s been years since I have done this job.

Importec or fcp lists uro. So then I was going to order a dealer one and
thought I remember those were uro now too. Heck I may have one around here
already. I got a trunk load of parts in the Craig 240d 3.0 and went to
look/unload what was in there last week and for some reason the key won’t turn
the trunk lock. It did just fine before but not it won’t. It’s like the key is
not going all the way into the lock. Seemed like there was a set of motor
mounts back there, or maybe a heater valve

So that does not really answer the question at hand.  If Uro is making
the seals now, then if you buy Uro or the dealer part, you would still
be getting the Uro part, right?

Perhaps. The current plan is, if/when time allows, to cut out the
passenger-side floor and try stitching in the new sheet metal I bought. If
that works, and helps, do the other side the next year. Otherwise...

I have a spare 220D body in the woods, but it's rusty too, and is the newer
body style. (No wing windows, etc.) A drivetrain and interior transplant
is not trivial. It's one of my options.

[MBZ] MB online dealer parts, the all telling list

2017-10-28 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
This is from Dave, very comprehensive list and will give you the run
down of all the various places to order from.

I last checked this data a few months ago, but the current list of
dealers I'm aware of is below. Although several dealers have lower
pricing, Naperville's free shipping generally makes them the best deal
overall:

__

*NOTE:* Sample $100 part pricing is based on standard pricing (wholesale
$80, dealer cost $60). Some parts have non-standard pricing such as
tools, remanufactured transmissions/engines, accessory items (B-, Q-, or
BQ- prefix). Certain lighting items/brands (i.e,., Hella ) have lower
than normal dealer cost which can make the "cost plus" dealers
substantially cheaper than "list minus".

*"Variable" price dealers*
__
*MB of Stevens Creek (San Jose, CA)*

Re: [MBZ] One or Two for Mr. Snook, Esq

2017-10-28 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
That's the one I bought from the estate sale, $1300.  Haven't done
anything with it yet, sitting in the barn, I start it occasionally and
it lights right off.  I drove it before I got it and the brakes were
grinding and grabby but worked, car ran very well except the throttle
return spring is missing or broken or something (which is interesting, I
pulled one off the 79 300TD and the 78 300CD has a different throttle
linkage arrangement so it doesn;t seem to be the same).  I haven't even
looked at it much yet due to some other issues.

The story is this woman owned it since like 1981 or so, it was her
baby,  She died a coupla years ago, and the long-time BF would start it
occasionally and move it around the driveway and wash it, but she never
let him drive it when she was alive, so he never drove it after she
couldn't drive it or after she died.  She kept it up in good shape, it
was sitting under a carport so out of the weather mostly.  She had it
repainted at some point after a storm knocked down some branches or
something and dinged it up a bit. It is white with black leather
interior, very minor damage to drivers seat, rest of interior looks
really nice.  Some rust starting to show up under the side trim, you can
see where it is starting to discolor a bit, so there's that.  Trunk
seemed to be leaking, I think probably the rear window seal so maybe
some caulk would fix that.

AC ran down, probably just needs a charge unless the seals are bad.
Belt is off but compressor seemed to spin so I don't know. Would
probably need a set of tires if you were going to drive it far or fast
but they had good tread, just likely old.

It's a pretty nice car actually, very clean and looks good from 20ft and
everything is there and straight.  Runs, drives.  I was thinking to BAT
it unless someone wants it.

Bring your trailer and haul it and the E$500 dizzel home, we could work

MB Northlake in Charlotte NC used to be good, haven't used them in
awhile though. There's another in Atlanta that is competitive.

Need to order (Vac pump, IP, chain tensioner, thermostat) gaskets etc,
along with all the crush washers for the IP lines. Where is the best
source? What was that MB stealer (in SC?) who was reasonable for
online orders?

Maybe I should see if BAT-Dan would order them for me and send here

Re: [MBZ] Weird shimmy

2017-10-28 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
These are tires are fairly new, the kid I bought the car from had put
some new tires on it (they are cheap low-end tires on pimp rims) so
unless one actually failed they should be good.  The dealer he got them
from is a good shop chain around here so I'm sure they would do good on
it if it is bad.  The car has been sitting for awhile before I fixed the
aneurysm, I was thinking it had gotten a flat spot or something but this
did not happen until maybe 3-40mph and it just came on fast, then
slacked as I slowed down, so the caliper hose or belt issue seems more
likely.

I pulled the caliper and pushed back the pistons, did not get a chance
to take it out and see what is going on but will do that shortly.  If
the problem persists I'll order new hoses, or maybe swap on off the
knackered 420SEL and see if it works for now until I can get  a new
one.  I can also do a front to back tire swap, see if that makes a
difference.

Thanks for the diagnoses, I would not have thought of those aspects.

I would want to check DOT build date and look at rubber condition of

offending corner and rotate tire by hand with something placed in reference
to the tread face so you could visually observe any "out of round" however

Most likely it's the hose, not the piston. Based on my experience,
anyway. Especially since it seem to be applying, but not
releasing. That is the classic symptom of a swollen hose.

Re: [MBZ] Pahtz sources

2017-10-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
This is the place:

http://mercedespartspeople.com

Understand that I just ordered an accessory. I know nothing about them as far
as their ability to sell parts or their prices. I will say that they didn’t
give me any sort of a deal on the mud flaps or hazard triangle, but I didn’t
expect one because they’re accessories. I don’t get the same discount on
accessories from my dealer as I do on just parts. I think I only get 15% on
accessories versus 25% on parts.

My only motivation for ordering from them was that they can allegedly source
the accessories I need. I’ll believe them when the stuff shows up on my
doorstep, since every other domestic MB parts source I know of can’t find or
get the items. The numbers I have are good in the MB system, so if they’re
relying on that only they’ll get a rejection as soon as they place the order.
