I had been seeing and hearing that the regionals are hiring like mad right now
and you can get thru training and hired in about 2 years. They are supposedly
starting out at 60k a year for FO and upgrade to captain within 18 months with
huge sign on bonuses. I would not think a 40 year old would ever make it to the
majors though.

At 40+ the uphill struggle gets "more uphill". Lots of young pups with
plenty of vigor competing for the slot you want.
It takes time to build the hours necessary to fly "commercial class"
aircraft. Those hours are most often build flying as a flight instructor,
or hauling freight, or something less desirable than "flying the big ones
loaded with passengers.." Expect 8 to 10 years before anyone will look at
hiring him for a co-pilot slot in a heavy, after working his way up the
ladder flying regional airlines and such...
Type certifications typically cost around $35,000.00 and they are "on your
nickle" most often... bigger aircraft cost more... then, there is the
issue of flight physical... Is he healthy? Will he stay healthy past 55?
ATP rated pilots [airline transport pilot] require a First Class Medical
exam every 90 days... anything less than perfect... you have a problem at
payday... cause you can't fly.

It's a tough life. How many ex wives does he have? Flying takes you away
from home a lot.. women don't "store well". etc etc..

Rent the plane AND the instructor pilot while you learn. Capital outlay
will be less, your pace will be more relaxed, and you will learn more.

Qualifying for a pilots license isn't like a car driving license. Takes
much longer and involves many more details that must be done "just right"
or you die. There are no "parking lots" in the sky where you "pull over
and sort it out". All aircraft wrecks start on the ground before you take
off. Find a good Certified Flight Instructor and stick with them.

Grant...
Commercial Pilot, fixed wing and helicopter, Multi Engine, Instrument,
Restricted Aircraft endorsements, multiple type certificates, low level
aerobatic endorsements. etc etc etc.
I've spent a considerable amount of time not in contact with the ground,
earning a living. You will know in first 10 hours flying with instructor if
you really want to do it.
And, remember, take all the letters in the word "aviation" and you will
never spell "cheap" with them... ;))

Harbor Freight blue nitrile gloves, my stock purchase from them nearly every
visit. I would go with the black ones but they last too long, meaning when I’m
done they’re not, so they can get thrown away and wasted.

I glove up for just about every operation on the car, and if I have to use
multiple pairs, so be it. Saves on hands and cleanup.

2018-03-22 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
The aluminum is very difficult to get out because the rubber is rock hard, you
have to very carefully pry it loose. Probably need to cut the rubber to remove
it, it won't come out very easily.

The new seals are much softer -- put on the glass, insert the straightened and
cleaned up aluminum, and lace in per instructions.

You want a set of those suction cups on a stick to manage the window, else it
takes three people.

[Check the box of gloves you buy, your source may vary from mine.]

I, for one, am glad that OkiBenz is platform-agnostic.
These things have a way of working out. Expect to see competition (small at
first) to tech monopolies, soon. I know several firearms training programs
currently use the tube site, just because it's there. But these days there is
no real reason not to self-host. Personally, I don't use or care about the
fakebook time suck. Now, Google is another matter.

Not presently. I like this car too well to let it go right now. Maybe in the
future when I tire of it, but for now I plan on enjoying it for a while. Nice
to have a solid spare driver, and the youngster is flying the coop shortly, so
I’ll have a good spot to store it once he’s gone.

It still has things it needs, but it’s stuff that can wait and be done at my

Transmission shop scam.

Right after I got the 300D, I took it to the trans shop to see about
replacing seals. It would puke a qt or 3 randomly when parked. (TX
car, Autohaus, Dallas, as is my 81 240D)

They told me the trans was shot, blah, blah

I drove off while they were still telling me the sky was falling.
(shop owned by the local JF church high ups)

The car has over 300k now, it was under 150k at the time. Trans is
still fine. I put a can of the seal softener stuff in it and drove it.

Re: [MBZ] 400E Catch Up

2018-03-22 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Figured out the speaker, and it was just as I suspected.

The crossover capacitor in the smaller high frequency drivers was shorted. I
clipped one end of it to take it out of the circuit and I now have the large
driver working again. Probably wasn’t doing the amp any favors running into a
short, either.

Drove the car to work today, a really nice ride.

I’ll probably do the transmission fluid and filter and the spark plugs this
weekend, and that will wind things down. New windshield on Monday, then all is
well for the most part.

Re: [MBZ] Getting fan shroud out of W124 E300D/2.5 Turbo

2018-03-22 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
There is another method of securing the fan that was on my 603 diesel that
might be present on yours:

On or near the top of the water pump housing behind the pulley are a couple of
ribs cast into the housing. Using these as a stop, a piece of rod stock about
3/16” in diameter, bent into a short “L” shape with the bottom end of the “L”
being maybe 1/2” long or slightly longer, is placed up against one of these
ribs and the end of the rod going into a hole in the back of the pulley or
flange.

Hope that makes sense *and* it’s something that’s on your car.
