Re: [MBZ] OT - desktop hard disks

2018-04-11 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
>
> I have read that SSDs have a much longer lifespan, and are a lot faster to
> boot (pun attempt).

Completely false on both counts, depending on circumstances and subtracting
the pun.

SSD's are _usually_ faster, and don't have mechanical wear mechanisms. But
there are also two basic facts of physics working against you:

1) The fundamental electron tunneling mechanisms used have a
wear-equivalent behavior, and they literally slow down with every erasure.
Depending on the technology, at a 10:1 ratio or worse. When near EOL, some
devices can take 1/2 second or more PER ERASURE to finish.

2) Some flash technologies have a wear-out threshold in the hundreds
(10^2!) of cycles. The best ones are only millions (10^6). 10^4-10^5 are
the middle of the road. Most flash vendors don't want to tell you the raw
numbers. The newest high-density MLC/TLC flashes are the worst.

Plus, there are more factors:

3) Wear-leveling mechanisms, required in order to compensate for the above
two conditions, are often not matched to the filesystem. This can result
in highly-unoptimal use behavior of the raw flash device, causing
accelerated wear on the flash. Yes, making things worse instead of
better. Current trends are to integrate this necessary mechanism into the
device, where it is opaque, unspecified, and unadvertised. By the time you
find out it's actually shit, it's too late. Low-cost commodity devices are
usually the worst.

4) The more full the SSD is, the less free space there is to push around
for wear leveling purposes. A nearly full device will wear out much faster
than a nearly empty one.

5) Retention is usually unspecified, but can be measured in months on the
worst devices. Higher temperatures exacerbate the problem.

For some heavy write-oriented applications, a traditional rotating disk
will actually work better and last longer! A company I once worked for
changed production from rotating to SSD, "to enhance reliability." Failure
rates in the field went _up_! They did not switch to a flash-friendly
filesystem format, and the traditional fs just wore the flash out in short
order. The 'improvement' was made by the purchasing/marketing department,
and engineering was neither involved nor consulted. Oops.

OTOH, a truly optimal implementation, largely read-only and well-matched to
the application, will really fly, last a long time, and will be immune to
physical abuse.

Our big Macs here at home use SSD for the boot/application disk, and
rotating media for all the user files. They're blazingly fast in general
operation, but a catastrophic SSD failure will not result in the loss of
critical data. These machines all use Time Machine to back up to a server,
which uses 2TB RAID HD's to catch. One of these raw HD's is rotated out to
off-site storage quarterly, and the RAID is rebuilt with the oldest offline
device. (4 2T mechanical hard drives in rotation, 2 serving 'live' at a
time, 2 in separate off-line off-site locations.)

Fast, and safe.

The 560SL takes its ground through the speedometer, and not the big plug,
unlike the older cars. It's easy to blow the trace inside the speedo head
if you flash the clock power line to one of the metal shells, for example.
Then everything is messed up. Fortunately it is an easy fix, if you are
handy. Don't know if this applies, or not.

[MBZ] bench test

2018-04-11 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
Any of our long term tech people have a good way to set up a bench test so I
can figure out if the instrument cluster parts for pre-1992 are working? I
picked up a cluster from a w116 that could swap into my SL. My clock does not
function and the tach is slow. Only spins up to 2500 top. This replaced the
nonworking clock with tach that would swing and pop all over but never tell the
truth.

Speedo in this unit does spin up, but I think the odo is shot. Stuck trip
meter and the odo is not seeming to click over. I need to check fuel gauge
and temp. If I can set up the test bench, I would be able to certify the other
dozed clusters living on my parts shelf.

Re: [MBZ] OT - desktop hard disks

2018-04-11 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
I have gone to modest (like 500G) SSDs in all my PCs and store most files
externally on a NAS. PCs boot much faster from a SSD. My main NAS (always on)
is a Synology DS216play with two 8T WD red drives that I bought refurbished on
ebay for much less than new. The 216 is set up as two large (8T) volumes with
no RAID, They have been running fine for about two years now. I also use a
Synology DS413 set up as 13T RAID 5 with three 6T and one 3T WD red drives (all
ebay refurb) which is the backup for most things, including all the DS216.
Finally, I have an external USB drive plugged into the 216 for weekly disk
image backups of all PCs. Storing full image backups on a USB drive simplifies
a restore. To date, I haven't had problems with the WD red drives. I use
Acronis for backup on the Win machines and the Synology (free) package for
backup between the Synology machines. No complaints so far.

When you do that, the larger disk thinks it is the size of the smaller
disk, which is why you have to use a partition manager (on Linux, parted)
to enlarge the last partition on the disk.

I hadn't looked since January when I ruined my hood.
Found one for $100, 100 miles away, downgraded condition, apparently for rust,
3 years older than my ML.

2018-04-11 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I have had good luck with hitachi. Other than some that were bad out of
the box, I don't recall any (of hundreds) failing. The bad ones were
replaced with refurbs, and no problem ever with the refurbs. WD, and
seagate, have failed. I think it was some seagate I bought in 2000 that
i figured were programmed to brick in 10 years. They all died exactly
10 yrs after mfgr. date.

Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes wrote:

I have read that SSDs have a much longer lifespan, and are a lot faster to boot
(pun attempt).

Also, I too favor WD over the competition.

My solution was a NAS with a pair of red 4TB WD HDs. The cost for the WD
MyCloud Mirror was no more than the cost of the 2 HDs in it. It also runs my
HDHomerun DVR software in its spare time.

[MBZ] CoPart

2018-04-11 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
I took a 3 hour lunch break yesterday to check this out and bid on it.
https://www.copart.com/lot/27896988

It has the parts I need to fix my 2100 mile car that's slowly depreciating in
my garage.
(except for the side curtain airbags, seatbelts and hood)
It's the same color and bodywork, (slightly rare RS nose/tail/side ground
effects package) and even the same month of production, so there was a very
good chance of the black granite metallic paint matching.

I wanted it pretty bad until I saw the dent in the hood, still bid $2600 on it
at 2pm the day before the sale, I was the first person to even bother bidding
on it. By the time I got home last night it was sitting at $2650. By morning it
was $2700, which means that yesterday some other retail idiot with access to a
pro account kept raising his bid by $50 until he beat me and then somebody else
outbid him overnight. Sold for $4550, which is a lot more than I paid for my
less damaged 2016. That makes the 2nd time I found a RS the right color, and
the 2nd time it went for at least 50% more than I expected. I'm not going to
pay over $5500 out the door for a parts car and then buy seat belts and airbags
too. Somebody must have really wanted to restore it.

Mitch.

Re: [MBZ] OT - desktop hard disks

2018-04-11 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
It would be stretch to say SSDs always have a longer life than spinning disk
drive. They do have a known lifespan, last I knew it was 10^28 writes to any
given data location at which point you've got a read-only drive.
For most people that means the drive will last a really long time, however if
you were doing lots of write/delete cycles you could kill a disk pretty
easily...
I've got a Touchbar Macbook Pro because the SSD in my Retina Macbook Pro quit
after 4 years. I've never had a laptop drive failure before...

As an aside I was just thinking about how many drives I'm responsible for
currently, I quit counting at 300...

My boot disk and the second disk - used for backing up photos, etc. are almost
full. This is an older (9 years old) HP consumer box.

I'm seeing 4TB disks for reasonable prices, Seagate and Western Digital.
What have the rest of you experienced in terms of drive reliability/life?

I only have two drive bays in the case - seems inadequate today . . .

I'd hate to have to rebuild the box from scratch, with the licensing hassles
from M$ and Adobe, etc., but am also thinking of one of those HP workstations

[MBZ] ML350 voltage regulator

This winter my 2003 ML350 quit charging with no warning lamp.
In the pre-computer age, that would have meant a bad regulator or dash

Since it's a MBZ with 190k on the clock and a TINY alternator pulley, I'm
thinking 'throw in a regulator/brush pack and see what happens'.

But I have some questions:

Is the brush pack externally accessible?
If not, can I directly swap in an alternator that does have a quick detach
brush pack, like the one from my 1999 E320?

How do I tell if it's a Valeo or Bosch alternator?

Where do I buy the brush pack?

I haven't had to do this kind of stuff in many years, but last I remember,
copying a disk does not get the MBR, just the files and directories. A
clone would get the MBR, but how that works with a disk of a different size
I don't know. You used to have to purchase software to do this stuff
decently, is there freeware that works now? I'm running W10 . . .
I'm guessing boot to a Linux USB drive with the utilities, then clone the
old drives to the new ones?

If you’re buying a single drive, splurge and buy an enterprise grade drive.
Well worth the extra bucks.

I have recently bought a couple from Newegg I think, I want to say HGTV
brand (!) but that's not right, but it is something like that.  They got
pretty good reviews for whatever that is worth. They were a bit more
expensive than the Seagate and WDs which got poor reviews.  I'm not sure
any of them are very good these days, some seem to be built better.

I would suggest getting 2 and putting them in external holders (cheap)
and mirroring your HD to both of them so you have some reliability and
redundancy.
