Either the seat or antenna are shorting out based on your list. Those are the
only things I suspect would draw enough magic pixie electrons to cook a fuse.

Re: [MBZ] re Short

2018-07-20 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Larry:

Classic battery flattening problem is a bad light delay relay. It's a solid
state relay that turns off the interior lights after a delay, and when it goes
bad it draws a couple amps after the lights are off. Sadly, the only way to
check is to check the current draw when the lights go off, as it still shuts
them down on time.

My brother and I have both replaced at least one.

Also check for a broken door switch, or a loose wire. They can short, or stay
on, and that will drain the battery. If a wire is loose it can short, which
will pop the fuse.

Central locking is a vaccum/pressure pump, and it fails it can stay on (its in
the trunk on the sedans, you may not hear it run), can also run the battery
down and/or pop a fuse.

[MBZ] re Short

2018-07-20 Thread Larry Turner via Mercedes

Ok, here's the fuse that blew - Position C - it controls the following:

Rear roof light

trunk light

rear door locking system

seat back arrestor

central locking

door lights

reading lights

Auto Antenna

Control Unit Seat Adjustment

But if one of these were left on, I think the battery would run down
(which it did) but I don't think it would blow a fuse.

The above is FYI in case someone knows a reason for my battery to
discharge in 2 or 3 days.
BTW, I charged it at 40A for 1.5 hours and it raised it to 12.15V -
almost where I want it to be when cranking the engine.

If the problem is not the glow relay, the easiest way is to disconnect the
positive battery terminal, set your meter for measuring current, put one lead
on the positive battery post and use the other to touch each fuse in turn. Any
fuse that draws more than ten or fifteen milli amps is suspect.

Re: [MBZ] Short

2018-07-20 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Had a weird one this week.
Neighbor can't start his truck. (1996 Chevy 1500 pickup)
Puts it on the charger, drives his wife's truck to work.
Calls me up and asks me to look at it, he doesn't think it's charging.
I go over there and it's DEAD, like Larry's car after being parked all week
with a big current draw, but his truck did it overnight. I jump start his
'smart' charger with my 'dumb' charger.
Six hours later, it's still charging.
He gets home, it starts right up, alternator is working fine.
He'll leave it on the charger until the charger shuts off.
Next morning it's still charging, he buys new battery.

While putting new battery in, he hears a clicking noise.
Calls me over to investigate, it's his AC clutch. It's engaging as soon as you
hook up the battery, with the key out of the truck and the AC off, in fact he
never turned it on as long as he owned the truck. Pull the AC relay, no more
clicking. And probably nothing wrong with the battery he just traded in.
(Autozone Duralast battery dated 11/2007)

Mitch.

The pre-glow relay is notorious for sticking on and killing the battery.
With the engine off and a fully charged battery, checck the battery voltage
with the battery connected. Disconnect or remove the fuse for the relay, see
if the voltage increases. If you see a jump, the relay is sticking. You may
want to start the car, let it run a bit, then shut it off and repeat the test.

The bearing is pressed into the wheel carrier, and then the hub is pressed into
the center of the bearing. Don't want you to end up with half of what you
need, eh? Three parts there.

The axle does indeed fit on a spline through the hub. It also holds the
bearing together, so the nut needs to be tightened correctly. Failed to do
that once and had to repeat the job.

My question is (finally, right?) and I need to know how to find the
short.  Just out of curiosity I checked the Fuses and found fuse "C" was
blown - something unusual - I checked the map and C protects the seat
motors, Trunk Light and some other stuff - I'll write all of that down
shortly.

So, I can disconnect the battery to prevent discharge but I'm wondering
how to troubleshoot what I always called a dead short.

I can pull the fuses one by one and check the rate of discharge but with
so many fuses that'll take a while.

Thx,

A couple of comments for you.

Firstly that price is silly.
I ordered a couple of keys for my car a few years back and I think the
plastic part was about $6 from the dealer.

I think I would check the dealer price.

Secondly, they did not last very long. They are soft and I assume that
may be to prevent injury in an accident but the softness of the rubber
or plastic or whatever it is meant it did not last very long before it
tore. I then had it wrapped with a zip tie. When it does tear, you are
at risk of losing the key. When mine first came apart I did not lose the
key but it fell down between the seat and the center hump. I was a long
way from home and wondered how I was going to fish the key out from
under the seat track. I thought I might have to go in search of a place
to buy some tools and remove the driver's seat. Fortunately I managed to
get it out and was able to use it without the plastic bit to get the car
started and go home.

In my opinion, I would not use the "genuine" junk.
Find some other means of making it work. I think Wilton made a key head
out of wood and posted a photo way back.

I had one original key with the hard plastic head and that is what I
have been using. The other 2 keys with the broken soft plastic keys are
now just spares.

Heat up the plastic head by dipping in boiling water, that should soften it
up enough that you can pull out the insert. I'd recommend using a needle
nose plyers to grab the insert and pull.

into varnish inside the fuel pumps etc. My pop bought a 108 coupe with
fuel injection on eBay years ago, and he paid more to have the fuel

Well, yes, that's true, but RVs are typically larger than the sleeper in
our truck. I would expect that in RVs people do not sleep directly under
the AC unit and its outlet, which is why I'm concerned about noise. That,
and cutting a hole in the roof.

In the 60s and early 70s, D-Jetronic was a huge selling point.
Today, especially in a hobby/collector car, I'd much rather have a carburetor
or two, especially if the carb rebuild kit is still available. Cleaning a carb
is much easier than fixing D-Jet.

We don't have that here. No civil jury trials here in decades.
Unfortunately, that also has ramifications. Then the decision depends

Good point about the non-fuel injection. I might agree with you about the
unique interior but the seller needs two wealthy collectors with similar

Another plug, much like the one from the mower deck, is a dummy plug that you
plug into so that you can go backwards with the deck removed. Just plug into
that, and you can mow backwards to take care of that spot you missed on the

Max's comment about ASR helps because I don't have ASR - only ABS - so
hopefully that's not going to be a concern.  But it looks like I should
try to find parts from cars close in manufacture to mine to minimize
problems and to state my 91 300D is non ASR.

I've been looking at Car-Part.com list of parts and they have a listing
for Knee (see also Strut Assy) so I tried searing for that.  In the end
it will take one on one talking to the junk yard guy on the phone if I
can get them.  Our local yard never answers the phone - they say come
look and see if we have what you need. ;-^

OK guys, my local shop for state insp is booked til next week but I will
go then and try to get a photo of the underside -

available in the US that car-part thinks will fit a 1991 300D are from 1994.
Maybe they went to 4 channel ABS or made some other change in 1995?

If I search for a 1995 E300D, the results range from 1995 124/129/202 to 2000 C

It seems a bit odd, because I thought a 1994 W124 was identical to a 1995 W124.
