Re: [MBZ] 124 rear subframe

2020-01-28 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Yes, this has turned into a lot longer, more expensive and in depth
project than I thought.   But the end result will be a great almost like
new 300D 2.5 that might be good and reliable for the next 20-30 years
and quarter million miles. Since it will become primary transport for #1
daughter, I am doing more than if I would be driving it.   Gravity
assists in removing the subframe,  I was concerned about how to get it
back in.   My little wood platform made all the difference in the
world.    Karl and Max gave me some clues, and Wilton and Max helped
with the new (used) subframe and wheel carriers.    Eddies Tar and
Automotive helped with the press work.

I did rear rubber replacement on the 123 240D several years ago but a
124 is completely different.  Added to that was the rusty subframe, a
bad caliper and rustedout brake lines and a few body holes to patch.

I think the welding on the front frame mounts for the subframe turned
out ok, and it is stronger than original, as it is built up from angle
iron, so thicker steel.   Nowhere near a Dimitri job, but it was flux
core wire.   After I sprayed the undercoat on,  (after grinding goobers
off) it looks passable.

Motor mounts on a 240D are fairly easy.  just don't tighten anything
down until all the bolts are in.   I put a 2x 4/6/8 on top of the floor
jack under the oil pan to jack up the engine.  You can take out all the
bolts first, but at least take out the big bolts before you start
jacking it up.  (8mm allen socket)

OH! and if you are going to put new hard lines to the oil cooler on the
engine, now is the time.   To replace them, you have to take the left
motor mount off the engine.

Attaboy! That is so nice to hear when a good, old Mercedes can be
saved. I’ve got Hildegard up on ramps and ready to do the engine
mounts. I’m planning to do the fan shroud replacement afterward since
I won’t have to worry about fan blade clearance when I jack up the
engine without the shroud in place.

By the way, the rear brake lines are 18" Left, and 33 " right.   I used
18" and 36" premade lines.   ABS, but not limited slip.

The subframe is in.  Yay!

I put the assembled subframe on a heavy sheet of cardboard, then slid it
under.

I made a wood platform to hold the subframe without Diff and axles that
would balance it on the floor jack.  It worked like a charm.  I was able
to slide the jack under the platform under the car.   I jacked the
subframe up and into place, making a few adjustments on the way.  The
right side was a little higher, so I started bolts on that side first,
then went to the left side; jacked it up a couple strokes, then started
those bolts; checked alignment; then tightened it up.

I have pictures of the subframe with the platform   It worked slick as snot!

The LCAs have new bushings in, so those and the springs are next.  I was
going to replace the pinion seal on the diff, so I need to make some way
to hold the axles stubs in place so I can get the yoke off to replace
the seal.

Then the axles and diff go in.

Then calipers and bleeding the brakes
hookup emergency brake
bolt on driveshaft
put up the back 2/3 of the exhaust
and it should be ready!

Supposed to rain all day tomorrow, so probably nothing will happen until
later.

SEA you could take your the unused portion of paint in the can to the recycle
depot/hazard waste yard for recycle/remix. All the discards got magically
enhanced into a large mixer (somebody must have had a clue what they were
looking to end up with) and then dispensed into 5 gallon buckets for quick and
dirty application to walls. Sold the stuff at dollar store prices. I never
used it, but did supply them with many buckets of paint. I am at a loss for
how they mixed up the pumpkin spice flavor cans I donated.

Either way, I think the end product was on the greyish (zombie flesh?) tone or

[MBZ] 99 $500E300

2020-01-28 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
So I’m out here checking this car over. Interior needs a good cleaning but is
quite decent, upholstery good, a few little broken bits but nothing bad, the
bits are in the car. Body has a coupla small dings and various little ditzels
where rock chips have rusted through but otherwise quite straight. One piece
missing from front bumper next to the tow hook. The intercooler is sorta loose.
Engine is pretty clean.

I don’t think the guy put everything back together when he removed the intake
manifold, there are a few bits including the EGR tube collar (which is a PITA)
to replace) in a magnetic dish under the hood but I think all the bits are
there.

I have the battery charger on it so tomorrow I’m going to see if some simple
twiddles, relays and connections and such, might get it going.

Almost new original spare in trunk but lug wrench and tools gone. Tires have
good tread but are crap but I have the new set Of Kumhos on the smashed
$500E300.

No coolant in the tank so will have to check that out.

If I get it running maybe I’ll respray it in some pimp color, the white
nauseates me. Or maybe it will grow on me if I get it running. It’s probably in
better shape than the smashed $500E300 and a lot fewer miles, 185k v 325k. The
$600E320 has 242k.

I have no idea of value, but you should go to KBB, NADAand Edmunds with
the mileage, your zip code and if possible, the VIN.   Look up the avg
trade in and avg private seller values.   Take the lows of those 2
values, deduct the repair cost, and another $500 to 1000 and that should
be your offer.

A local body shop may give you an estimate, or you may need to pay them
for it.   Big differences in using junkyard parts vs new.   Paint is
just EXPENSIVE.

you can go to car-part.com and see what prive and availability is for
used parts.  Late model used parts are high.  at least 50% of new list
price.   Used to be you could buy NEW MB fenders from the dealer for the
price of used ones that needed prep time also.

[MBZ] OT: Using drones to combat pythons in FL

2020-01-28 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Interesting approach to a serious issue. Are pythons a problem in Dan's
neighborhood --- or a food source?

FLORIDABill would let agencies use drones to fight pythonsPublished:
Tuesday, January 28, 2020[image: Burmese python. Photo credit: Fish and
Wildlife Service/Wikipedia]

A Burmese python caught in Everglades National Park. Fish and Wildlife
Service/Wikipedia

Florida could turn to the sky to fight Burmese pythons on the ground under
a bill a Senate committee unanimously approved yesterday to allow two state
agencies to use drones in the effort to eradicate invasive plants and
animals.

The bill would create an exception to a current law that prohibits law
enforcement from using drones to gather information and bans state agencies
from using drones to gather images on private land. It would allow the
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Florida Forest
Service to fly drones to manage and eradicate invasive species on public
lands.

State Sen. Ben Albritton (R) said he has been told that drones equipped
with lidar, which stands for "light detection and ranging," might be able
to identify pythons.

"As you know, chasing those nasty critters down there in the Everglades is
a difficult task," Albritton said. "It would help these folks do their job."

He said drones would also help the agencies spot a fern native to Asia
that's destroying Florida's natural vegetation.

"There's this plant called *Lygodium* — Old World climbing fern — which is
wreaking havoc all over Everglades National Park and many other places in
the state. I've flown over it in a helicopter, and I recognized that it was
pretty easy to discern where it is," Albritton said.

The state wildlife agency's website warns that *Lygodium microphyllum* spreads
rapidly and is a "severe threat" to Everglades tree islands and puts other
forests at greater risk for wildfires because it serves as a fire ladder.

"The fern's ability to grow up and over trees and shrubs and to form dense
horizontal canopies allows it to cover whole communities of plants reducing
native plant diversity," the website says. "Some Everglades tree islands
are so completely blanketed by the fern that it is not possible to see
trees and other vegetation beneath the fern canopy."

The bill would also allow the agencies to use drones to fight wildfires.

"During a fire, they can use these drones to look for escape routes for
employees, if needed, if they get trapped in," Albritton said. "They can
measure tinder on the ground. There's a lot of different opportunities for
that technology to yield a safer environment for those folks." *— Brendan
Farrington, Associated Press*

Historically, VW and dogde stand out in my memory for offering bright
colors.   Plum Crazy, superbee, and bright yellow and red bugs along

I would expect these companies to be the first to offer colors again.
I have seen bright yellow dogdes already.

Re: [MBZ] 97 E300

2020-01-28 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes

Parts car. Maybe I could use the muffler and injectors (if they did just
install those, no WVO usage), then might be useful to remove the starter,
alternator, compressor, and put those on the shelf. Were the tires any good?
Radio stock? Wonder if the antenna would fit in a 124.

Re: [MBZ] 97 E300

The minute I see/hear “WVO”, “fryer oil” or “veggie oil” I turn tail and run.
There’s no way you’ll ever make one of these cars right again without major
work and $$$.
