That doesn't even touch on the loss of liberty, intrusion on
freedom, and the "mommy state" telling us what we can and cannot
do. "Wear your jacket!" "Don't go outside until you put on your
Wellingtons!" "I'm cold, you need to wear a jacket."

Freedom means the individual gets to choose what they think is
best - even if they are wrong.

If someone feels they are at risk, they can stay home. Or wear a
mask. Or keep 12 ft away. But don't force me to hide under my
bed because you are afraid, and I won't force you to leave your
house and take off your breathing mask.

I've used epoxy to glue in a new hose nipple when one cracked off the
reservoir tank, it's been holding but I can't say I don't worry about it
sometimes. I have a new tank just haven't gotten around to replacing it.

2020-05-25 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Replace it..
It will not heal, it will only get worse and fail when you least expect it
to... like when the temp is up and you are running AC in slow traffic...
the crack will expand as pressure goes up, then full failure of the tank.
My money goes to "replace with new".

I have noticed a small coolant leak coming from the LF area of the

Re: [MBZ] GLK 250 Blutec fuel gauge issue

2020-05-25 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
Well, it turns out that the miles since "reset" was not what I thought.
The reset occurred BEFORE I purchased the vehicle. Turns out that I have
driven only about 200 miles from the full fuel tank. The gauge is down a
little over 1/3, which corresponds with the 567 mile range of the car.
Today I went for a spin on I-270 up to Home Depot in Gaithersburg (22 miles
RT) and achieved 35.6 mpg, if you can believe the computer...

Storied from my elderly mother, survivor of the depression of ’29, numerous
real epidemics and quarantines (locked doors), WWII, and all the history over
the past 90 years says she never has seen the country in such poor shape as it
is now. Nobody closed the economy, except FDR was a disaster with is policies
which crippled the nation. But, the daily work and business was as active as
could be. Shops and offices, as well as transport and manufacturing went on so
that the nation could remain viable. It was expected, demanded by the
citizenry, that there be work, jobs, life. FDR stole butter and other
“rations” during the war, which flooded the market once Europe fell. It was a
corrupt time, in her words, but nothing compared to the outright criminality of
the past three months. Huey Long looks like a saint in comparison.

Sorry. Gotta call bullshit on that one.

Key paragraph:

It is true, however, that the government will pay more to hospitals for
COVID-19 cases in two senses: By paying an additional 20% on top of traditional
Medicare rates for COVID-19 patients during the public health emergency, and by
reimbursing hospitals for treating the uninsured patients with the disease (at
that enhanced Medicare rate).

Karl, you are blessed to be in a hospital setting that has no corruption that

There is a tremendous amount of money at stake here. Especially considering

Old ladies getting dizzy get delayed in the best of times.
Her first big dizzy spell was in June. She fainted in my arms in
September. I'm just glad I happened to be standing behind her when that
happened. She finally met the brain guy a week before Christmas. Got the
biopsy done a week before the Super Bowl. Spent Super Bowl weekend in the
hospital when she took a downturn right before the lab dealt with the
biopsy. Treatment began around the first of February, in the form of a
chemo agent with anti-inflammatory side effects.

Today, I suspect we'd get nowhere until she passed out and rode an
ambulance in September, then they'd start running the tests that got run
in July and August, unless Arteritis is much farther up the list of things
to check than it used to be. I ended up believing that Arteritis is so
rare because more people die from it than are diagnosed with it.

Re: [MBZ] OT Wuhan Red Death: Can't trust the numbers

2020-05-25 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
What should it be recorded as? The person died in the hospital.

There will always be data irregularities but the idea the hospitals are
somehow systematically having doctors enter fraudulent codes on death
certificates is pure BS. 1) it's a felony, with no benefit to a doctor to
do that, 2) we test everyone and we know whether they have covid 19 or not,
so there is no uncertainty 3) the people who die of covid pneumonia in
hospital have imaging ample imaging and other studies to back up their
diagnoses.

The idea that hospitals can somehow control what I write in a death
certificate is laughable. I have zero incentive to lie about anything. The
hospital doesnt get paid any more or any less whether someone has pneumonia
from covid or another virus. All this stuff is politically motivated trolls
casting aspersions on electronic media. It would not surprise me if these
ideas originate outside the US in many cases.

Covid deaths at the beginning were vastly undercounted - not over counted.
A glance at the excess monthly mortality by year tells the story. People
were dying but we had no way to diagnose them because even hospitals could
not do tests.

2020-05-25 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Yeah you put the mechanical 603 pump onto the 606. I have that motor in my
87 wagon. Works great. If you get greedy with element sizes then they get a
bit smoky off idle.

The EDC pump on the turbo 606 is pretty basic but it is electronic to some
degree. If you put a bigger turbo and intercooler on a 606 in a 99 w210
and then put bigger elements in the pump and leave the electronics intact
and switch out the maf sensor for higher boost, you get really nice smoke
free pump control and nice performance.

They are getting pretty good at hacking the ecus for the 613 and 648
though. That is what all the Europeans are doing. Hard to make really big
power with it as the head does not flow as much air as the 606. So you need
more boost etc. But it has pretty good power at baseline. I have a 648 in a
123 wagon but havent driven it much yet. Something to look forward to I
guess.

Our supplies are still restricted but we can at least get a mask that we
reuse. In the beginning even surgical masks were really scarce.

Re: [MBZ] OT Pre-existing immunity to WRD?

2020-05-25 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Thanks Don. That Sci Am article is a nice synopsis. There is also some talk
about circulating ACE2 levels, which is the main binding target for the
virus. Higher circulating levels of this receptor may confer protection.
Women and children have higher amounts, and do better in general with this
disease. Certain genetic polymorphisms may affect the levels. A study of
this has been proposed, and even infusion of recombinant ACE2 to treat. But
it is all highly speculative at this point.

Re: [MBZ] OT: cure worse than disease

2020-05-25 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
That temporal arteritis stuff would all happen currently if anyone thought
to check the labs for it. Pretty urgent.

The other side is a lot of people are not seeking care because they dont
want to go places like ERs or doctors offices due to fear of contracking
coronavirus. Heart attack diagnoses went down quite a lot, for instance.
Which means people are either having them and not coming in or they are
overdiagnosed to begin with.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Now it's the washing machine

2020-05-25 Thread Mitchell Haley EA via Mercedes

I used to want an on-premises commercial Speed Queen. (laundromat quality
but no coin box)
Back in 2002 a front loader was about $1400.

I ended up getting Mom a high efficiency Fisher and Paykel top loader
instead. Spiritual ancestor to the Whirlpool Calypso.
No belts or gearbox. Just a high efficiency motor, pump and a bunch of
valves. Only real problem is when the pump motor dies it pulls too much
current and fries the circuit board. Solution to that was an inline fuse
on the pump motor. Parts were cheap, repairs were easy.
But now the parts are expensive. A $35 pump is now $140.

So eventually I'll have to find a new favorite washer. What'll be hard to
replace are the top loading dryers that came with them. Nothing is as fast
or easy as pulling wet stuff out of the top of the washer and dumping it
in the top of the dryer.

Keurig doesn't get crudded up.

Also, distilled water apparently has less dissolved air in it, makes clear
ice cubes.

2020-05-25 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
We struggled with this on a GE front loader bought in the early 2000s.
Unfortunately, it was not one of the front loaders covered under the massive
recall campaign that seemed to affect nearly every one that was built. I used
to drain the sump almost weekly, but could never get it totally clean. Black
slimy stuff built up in it, and no combination of bleach or other chemicals
would clean it out completely.

Replaced it with a top loader and will never go back.

Re: [MBZ] What is the deal with light bulbs?

Yuk! The current lamp is decorative, as well as functional. Anything marketed
as Disco Dance Party need not apply.

All we need is a slab replacement bulb-equivalent in order to remain functional
and as decorative as it is, yet without becoming a bug crematorium. (Moths that
investigate that highly attractive bright and HOT 500W halogen bulb usually get
the Big Surprise.)

Nice. I noticed that as well. I believe the seller is not a native English

Brown, according to the seller. Who, to be fair, doesn't seem to know whether
his mother has a p*nis or not, so color identification likely isn't a skill,
either.

Correct. Whirlpool was the primary supplier of Kenmore label products when it
came to large appliances.

Re: [MBZ] GLK 250 Blutec fuel gauge issue

2020-05-25 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Spend a few $$ (150) and buy an iCarsoft (or similar) scanner ffom Bezo and you
can see if there are any new or old codes showing related to the fuel sender.
This 211 I just bought has some stored codes related to that system. I need to
get a VMI to see if anything was ever done to it.

The first time I put gas in was weird, I couldn’t get the tank filled (per the
gauge) though it was acting like it was full, pump kept shutting off Then I
(actually) filled up again the other day and it seems fine. I don’t think it
filled before, maybe it was the pump, but I’m wondering what was going on
before.

In any case the scanner is a very useful relatively cheap device for these
newer cars with all the nannies.

Re: [MBZ] purchased for my mother from California. He can no longer drive

2020-05-25 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Not really, considering the condition and mileage.

While Euro headlights are nice, I like the look of the W116 with the sealed
beams. And I totally agree about the fog lights. They look horrible on these
cars, the J.C. Whitney analogy was spot-on.

Looks like some clear coat issues on the hood over the left headlight, and am I
seeing overspray or just a wear through of the undercoating in the right front
wheel well?

Still a nice looking car.

Re: [MBZ] OT: cure worse than disease

2020-05-25 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Exactly so. Collateral damage includes everything from suicide and drug use to
domestic violence, to delayed disease diagnosis, to delayed medical procedures,
to hospital near bankruptcy and unemployed health professionals. Then there
are the economic impacts like unpaid bills and social damage like lost
education. If we still had real reporters and news media they would ferret out
and quantify such things. But we don't. For the most part we have a herd of
jackals and hyenas.

He operation may be a success but the patient is near death.
