It took several months of Italian tune ups before this '95 E300 from Dan's son
was producing decent power, I'd not be surprised if your car will respond in
the same way.

[MBZ] I used the vacuum-assisted coolant refiller ...

2020-08-03 Thread Craig via Mercedes
on our '93 E300D and found there is a leak in the cooling system
somewhere.

I found the ultimate vacuum by plugging the port to the radiator with my
finger and turned the air on. When I repeated the process with the unit
attached to the cooling reservoir fill cap, it did not reach the final
vacuum and when I closed the valve to the cooling system, it started
leaking up to atmosphere.

I'm mulling over how to find out where the leak is.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Urban dictionary says the W = win but your explanation seems more likely...

I think it's even stupider than that.  "Dub" short for double-U, as in "w", as
in "wheels".
I've never even known one 'chick' to give a flying fork about anything like
that.

[MBZ] 2020 S-class technology

2020-08-03 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
https://www.autoweek.com/news/future-cars/g33456533/5-tech-features-rolling-into-the-next-mercedes-s-class/

1. Front airbags for rear seat passengers, built into the front headrests.

2. 4 wheel steering. (just like a 30 year old Prelude?)

3. Active side warning (if it senses your hand moving towards the door
handle and there's something coming from behind, it sounds an alarm,
startling you into opening the door quickly so that cyclist doesn't get
away).

4. E-Active Body Control (another new form of active ride control)

5. Pre-Safe Impulse Side (thanks to #4 above, the car has the ability to
jump up 3" when you're about to be T-boned, to take the impact lower on
the door and involve the chassis structure in the collision).

[MBZ] OT: Computers

2020-08-03 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
I've periodically reported on my various Adventures in Computing, and I
thought I'd check in again. As some may recall, I upgraded my main
desktop home/work (now) system from a Mac Pro 2,1 to a Mac Pro 5,1
(both were common firmware upgrades from the immediately preceding models,
followed by CPU upgrades), and I had a LOT of trouble trying to run a pair of
spendy
3.46 GHz processors. These were unreliable in a pair, but either would work
great
in a single-CPU card. I finally gave up and put in some cheaper, slower 2.93
GHz
processors, a speed that matched what it had in its 4,1 state, and the thing
hasn't
hiccuped since. I booted it on May 28, the morning I installed the stock-speed
but
upgrade CPUs, and it's been running nonstop ever since. (Yes, "who -b" says
May 28.)

I run Mac OS High Sierra, almost the newest it will take. I also run, via
VMWare 11,
Windows 10 and Linux. I also run Raspbian via Qemu, since I'm developing for
Raspberry Pi as well. (For use in the Theme Park augmenting coin slots with
the Park's cash-equivalent cards.) All of these work flawlessly, and
simultaneously,
using multiple desktops to keep the mess contained on the 30" main monitor.
It never even breathes hard, it has 48GB of RAM.

It has been an exceedingly painless and highly effective and satisfying time
since I got off the Gigawagon. Nothing I do is even remotely CPU-bound, except
the ARM simulation. And that is about the same speed as a Pi 1B, so it's not
horrible.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Gun fun

2020-08-03 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I've got one in 16ga.The problem, and the real reason I didn't buy a used gun,
is that steel shot will pound the choke out of that gun in a season of heavy
hunting. You could use bismuth shot at only $40 a box, steel is like $16...

That sounds like most of the guys I’ve shot with at my club. A lot of them are
really serious about their shooting but not judgmental about the guy/gal next

Sporting clays would be tough with a bolt action, it's all doubles.Actually
I'd like to see somebody try it, or with one of the Henry lever guns.
Interestingly a 20 or 28ga isn't at a serious disadvantage in sporting clays
the way it is in trap. A lot of folks shoot a 20ga.

My brother bought a rather nice 28 double back in the 1980s. I'm trying to
remember if it was O/U or S-S.

If only I were seriously good with a shotgun, I'd deal with fools like
Dan's Beretta snob by outshooting them with my dad's bolt action Mossberg
.410. But I'm the guy who hits 8 out of 25 with a 12ga pump.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Gun fun

2020-08-03 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
There was a Mossberg in the running for this purchase but the long term
reliability reports on it were poor where the reviews for the Browning included
several torture tests "I shot 1100 rounds with no cleaning or added
lubrication" and one "I shot 500+ rounds in the rain". Since this will be a
field gun I wanted something that can take a licking which is also why I opted
for a composite stock instead of wood.
My slug gun is a Mossberg 500, 1980s vintage, this purchase allows me to keep
the slug barrel on that full time and not need to worry about losing scope zero
changing barrels.
Oh, the other reason for an autoloader, at some point I'd like to go shoot snow
geese. For that I'll get a 5 shot extension tube (10 shots total). Snow geese
are such a plague that they have "conservation hunts" which are not to conserve
snow geese, they're to preserve the habitat that snow geese destroy. The
purpose of the hunts is to eliminate as many geese as possible so all the
normal rules about ammunition limits and bag limits are gone.
I want to see the "goose tornado" where the sky blacks out with geese...

If this is an early W211 you should be happy with 38 mpg on a long trip,
48 just isn't happening. What is interesting is that MBZ claimed 6.6
seconds 0-60 for that car, which is about 2/3 of a second better than my

Re: [MBZ] 48.5mpg

2020-08-03 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
If it makes serious smoke under hard acceleration, the EGR is stuck open. Or
at least not closing properly. Had this issue on the Volvo TD, very serious
smoke. Plated off the EGR on that one, it really only needed the actuator rod
cleaned so it closed properly (and all the goop cleaned out from using dino oil
in it).

In your case you will have to fix it, which is probably why the car went for
cheap.

It will run better when it's working -- unlike gasoline cars, max EGR is just
above idle and drops as the fuel comes on. If it doesn't close under
acceleration, you don't have enough oxygen for the fuel going in and it smokes
badly. Wide open at idle doesn't have much effect as you aren't putting very
much fuel in.

I figured maybe it could be cleaned out like the M112 ones but never messed
with a 648 before. I will probably look into sorting it out or see if the
bypass thing is viable.

[MBZ] ***SPAM*** RE: OT: Gun fun

2020-08-03 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
I had a trap range near my house way back, and used to take my scarred,
plain-Jane field grade Rem. 870 once in a while. I was never a great
shotgunner, but could usually break better than 20 out of 25.

One day a guy next to me had a nice engraved Browning auto. His score was not
good, but his sense of humor was spot on. When we had finished the set he
turned to me and said:

"That's a really nice shotgun you have there!"

I’ve never paid a lot of attention, but it seems that the hard core guys that
come out every weekend with their own golf carts and shooting vests and such
all use O/Us. I got grouped with a guy at a fundraising shoot last year that
was trashing everyone who didn’t have a Beretta. He made fun of my “import gun”
even though he had never heard of Lanber (very well known in Europe and Down
Under despite being out of business now). As most shooters would do, I offered
to let him shoot it, but he refused and started in with the “nothing but a
Beretta” crap while everyone rolled their eyes.

We all shot better than this guy. He was pretty quiet by the time we got to the
last stand. It was clear he was a hack, as his stance, pull and other aspects
of his form were all out of kilter. One of the other guys in our group offered
in a very diplomatic manner to give him some pointers but the guy blew him off.

My former boss was the guy with the Mossberg and my shooting coach. He’s still
shooting well with that gun, and has no desire to buy anything else. The idea
that the more expensive a gun is makes you a better shooter will never offset
poor technique or fit.

I have a Browning BPS pump in 12 ga. 3 1/2" magnum. I got stopped once by the
wildlife cops in BC who had a hard time believing it only would hold 3 standard

I’m sort of like Ty, Chevy Chase’s character in Caddyshack. Not that I’m that
good, but I go shooting to have fun and enjoy myself. I rarely keep score

I do I’m usually around 6-7 out of 10, maybe 8 on a really good day.

My brother bought a rather nice 28 double back in the 1980s. I'm trying to

The CEL is a known issue with the EGR. The EGRs screw up as they age and stop
working or get clogged. You can’t disconnect them without it throwing a CEL,
which is why it’s doing it. Connect it back up and the car will run like
garbage.

There’s a guy in the UK who sells a little bypass box of some sort that you
wire into the EGR harness that fools the car into thinking the EGR is working.
That’s the only fix.

I can’t recall if the CEL happens if the intake manifold “flappers” servo acts
up, too. I believe the one on this car may be disconnected or the link missing.
As long as the flaps are open you’re good. If they get stuck in the closed
position it will run poorly.

You got a hell of a deal, buddy. And a nice vacation, too.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Gun fun

2020-08-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes

The CDI says it got 48.5 MPG over 500 miles today averaging 75-80mph. That did
include a little bid of city driving yesterday. Do these really get that good
of mileage? It’s about half way between a half and quarter tank. I will
probably go ahead and fill it up in the morning and see what the manual

I've started making adjustments to my Stoeger, I'm consistently overshooting
so I'm starting with a small washer between the recoil pad and the top screw
that holds it. If that helps I'll invest in a pad spacer. I seem to shoot
pretty straight but high and it pounds my cheek a little which is actually a
symptom of the same problem. I'm probably shoving my face into the stock too
much which is whats making it hit me, a little down angle might help. That at

For the hunting gun I also wanted the option of 3.5" shells. Steel is less
dense than lead so you end up using larger shot sizes which decreases pellet
count. I'm not a huge fan of 3.5" shells, they recoil bad but my shooting buddy

Looks like a nice shotgun. My biggest concern is fitting a new gun. I had a
really nice Beretta but it was a crappy fit and something that would have to
spend some time with a gunsmith to make right. I sold it and got my Lanber,
which I knew from the previous use of one would be a good fit, and it was.

A lot of people don’t realize how much proper fitting matters with a shotgun.
You can have a fantastic gun with a lousy fit and you won’t be able to hit the
side of a barn. Buddy of mine didn’t have a lot of coin for a gun, but after my
urging spent time with my coach finding a good fit. He ended up with a Mossberg
that cost him about $500-$600 and he was busting clays left and right on his
first time out. Coach time was around $100 for the fitting, and worth every
penny.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Gun fun

2020-08-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I own and have shot both for clays and grouse. Personally, I prefer a shotgun
that breaks down. I guess an autoloader would be better for hunting just due to
the convenience, which certainly makes sense. If I was just shooting clays it
has no advantage, as you’re not allowed to load more than two rounds at a stand
anyway.

Coach time was around $100 for the fitting, and worth every
penny.

Pictures or it didn’t happen….

Re: [MBZ] Hey, FT, you getting some rain now?

2020-08-03 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Yes it started raining at 11AM or so, nothing too heavy, right now it is
just raining lightly, no wind.  Looks like it might rain harder a bit
later but so far just what we need as it has been quite dry here.

I'll probably take a bike down to the beach later to check out the surf

We got the weather station and creek level sensor set up Saturday, I
just checked it and it's not clear if it is working properly although it
seemed to be collecting some data and saving it.  It goes to the "cloud"
via a cellular data cnxn.  In touch with the manufacturer, might do a
bit of remote troubleshooting later.

[MBZ] OT: Gun fun

2020-08-03 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Duck and goose season is coming up and my hunting buddy has been picking on my
over and under shotgun since I've only got 2 shots to his 3. I shoot poorly
enough he's got a point. I shot sporting clays yesterday and I didn't even
bother to check my score, if I got 10 out of 50 I'd call it a win. In my
defense I've got a sunburn on my shoulders and probably shouldn't have been
shooting.

I've got a pump gun but its setup with the slug barrel and shoots really well
that way so I figured its time for a good duck/goose gun. I did a BUNCH of
research and finally settled on a Browning Silver.
https://www.browning.com/products/firearms/shotguns/silver.html
The main reasons I picked the Silver specifically were the cool semi-humped
receiver which looks a little like the Browning A5 which the then chief of
Winchester called "The ugliest gun I've ever seen".
The Silver is kinda-sorta out of production now, or at least the camo ones are
but I found one on Gun Broker for $950, with shipping and the FFL fee here I'll
be just over $1000.
I'm pretty excited, my second new gun ever and by far the most expensive gun
I've ever bought.

Hopefully it'll be here by early next week...
