Re: [MBZ] Check engine light on 250 GLK Bluetec SUV

2020-08-31 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I'm actually only assuming Advance Auto will do this. I know Autozone
does, and it's free.

Loose gas cap can cause it, at least in gasoline cars. Not sure about a
diesel. Just realize that it may take some time for the light to go out
even if that's the problem. It take a certain amount of time with no
faults before the light goes out.

Nice. That could be fun.

The youngest son and I were trying out our sporting clay club’s new rifle range
today. 100 yards long, which is nice.

I took my Yugoslavian SKS and the youngster took his new Remington 700
chambered in 300 magnum. Needless to say he has a very sore shoulder. I do not,
as the SKS was hitting steels flawlessly with minimal recoil. Gotta love those
stripper clips.

Lots of fun was had by all.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Skeet with prizes!

2020-08-31 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Yugo and Russian versions did not have chrome plated bores. There’s a fair
amount of consternation over this historically, as the Yugoslavians had the
resources available in country to do the chrome plating. However, at the time
there were plenty of government run factories keeping people employed, so the
general consensus is that it was easier to just replace them with a new barrel
if they wore out and keep the masses busy.

I have no idea how much wear mine has, but it appears to be tight if I run a
gauge through it. It certainly shoots very straight.

I thought about disassembling it and refinishing the wood, but I sort of like
the”beater” look it has. After a good day of shooting there will be some oil on
the stock around the vents. I just wipe it into the wood and call it
refinishing.

Guns don't age the way other things do. I took my 11ga side by side muzzle
loader to trap last Friday. We fired both barrels 4 times. I shot it twice,
Angie once and the guy who runs trap fired it once.It functioned perfectly, all
8 shots went off with only barely perceptible delay. That gun dates from some
time in the 1890s and functions exactly the same today as it did 120+ years ago.
Most normal people will never "wear out" a gun unless that gun was really cheap
to begin with.
The SKS in particular is a very simple design intended to be used by people
with no technological skill whatsoever. Its a real winner of a design.

A long time ago, back when Clinton was president, Iron Bloc surplus was
selling cheap.

And Norinco would sell you 1000 brand new SKS rifles for about $35k, FOB
Shanghai. Obviously you needed to be a licensed firearms importer to take
advantage of those prices.
Those SKS were retailing below $100 in the USA. They were not the same
quality as the ones made for the People's Army but they worked.
Meanwhile a AWB crippled Colt AR15 was more like $700-800.

My biggest 'why didn't I buy that?' from those days were some Romanian
AMD-65 parts kits (a shortened AK-47 used by tank crews). Mel Tappan was
selling them for something like $75 a pair, plus some small pittance for
USA made receivers to make complete guns out of them. I found out about it
a day or two after he raised the price, I called up TapCo and said I'd buy
four at last week's price and they laughed at me. So I didn't buy any. I
don't like to think about what those, or any functional Soviet AK, are
worth today.

A year ago, a reasonable quality non-Colt AR15 (like Ruger or
Smith) could be had for $500-600, in 2019 dollars. That old Yugo
SKS was worth a bit more than a new S
Now, everything's selling like it's 2013, and I can't pretend to know what
market value is.

2020-08-31 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
