Isn't it interesting that state governors (not the feds) mandated these
lockdowns but those states are all broke and can't print money. I don't think
the treasury (i.e. us) should be paying for this stupidity any more than for
the state's other unfunded obligations. In fact, clowns like Cuomo and
DeBlasio should sued be held personally responsible for the damage.

Yes the COVID-19 vaccine was developed in two days once they had the
genetic sequence from the Chinese. All the rest of the time has been
developing and performing the clinical trials and analyzing the results.

mRNA technology has also shown some promising early results in
developing a cancer "vaccine" that can be tailored to the individual and

From what I read, there are fewer than 100 apparently resistant trees
where chestnuts were once common, plus a few groves that were
transplanted outside the normal range of chestnut before the blight
(like a grove in Northern Michigan) that the blight never got to because
they were isolated from other chestnuts.
Fenner Arboretum in Lansing apparently has some grown with nuts from up
north.

Ours was just like Dad's usual popcorn we had every Sunday night.

Cooked in a pan with a little Mazola, piled up in a big pan until there
was enough for everybody, then melted butter poured over it. Everybody
added popcorn salt to taste.
Popcorn salt was extra fine, and flew out of the shaker much faster than
table salt, so you applied it carefully.

That big mesh disc, I assume it made smoke flavored popcorn?

Mitch.

There has been a breeding program for decades to restore them but some serious

Chinese Chestnuts are good eating, bigger than the American ones, and smaller

been too busy the last few years. Not as good a quality, but the trees are

[MBZ] OT: Vaccine tech

2020-12-21 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Quoting as found, perhaps some here will have the knowledge base to
confirm or refute:

mRNA as a process is well understood and not new. mRNA as a mode of
immunogenic antigen expression is cleaner than previous vaccine tech.

It may seemed rushed, but it wasn't in terms of creating the vaccine.
Lots of work was already done on SARS-CoV-1 and MERS. Unlike previous
vaccines, this one was made in the modern era where the entire viral
genome was fully genetically sequenced and sent to labs world wide via
email in January. No other vaccine push in history has had so many labs,
so many companies, and so much effort and resources dumped into it
putting everything else on the back burner. There are FIFTY EIGHT
vaccines for COVID in various stages of testing! The mRNA vaccines are
out first because they take the least effort to get right and put in
testing. It really only takes a few days of work to decide on the sub
sequence from the viral genome to build the mRNA that will cause the
desired antigen. It is actually much simpler to do this than older
vaccine development methods. Phase I/II/III testing looks like other
vaccines, except more expansive. The only difference is the EUA during
phase III after excellent studies with ongoing results showing great
efficacy and safety were evaluated in the setting of a pandemic.

mRNA vaccines have been in the pipeline for 30 years.

The limit on the technology has always been the molecule stability
(exonuclease and endonuclease degradation of RNA) and the ability to
package it in a way the gets inside a cell (delivery).

The former is addressed by modifying the phosphodiester linkage (the
means of linking one nucleoside to the next) to a phosphorothioate
linkage (Sulfur replacing one of the Oxygens) that is poorly recognized
by nuclease enzymes, and it turns out mRNA is more stable than
previously thought. The latter by encapsulation or association of the
mRNA with lipid nanoparticles.

There were mRNA vaccines developed but not needed so they weren't pushed
further. mRNA cancer treatments did go through trials and they were
safe, just not effective enough because it was before the tech we have
now.

Luckily, now we have good safety and efficacy data on these mRNA
vaccines.

Re: [MBZ] OT: chestnuts

2020-12-21 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
The American chestnut tree (/Castanea dentata/) once dominated the
eastern half of the U.S. Because it could grow rapidly and attain huge
sizes, the tree was often the outstanding visual feature in both urban
and rural landscapes. The wood was used wherever strength and
rot-resistance was needed.

In colonial America, chestnut was a preferred species for log cabins,
especially the bottom rot-prone foundation logs. Later posts, poles,
flooring, and railroad ties were all made from chestnut lumber.

The edible nut was also a significant contributor to the rural economy.
Hogs and cattle were often fattened for market by allowing them to
forage in chestnut-dominated forests. Chestnut ripening coincided with
the holiday season, and turn-of-the-century newspaper articles often
showed train cars overflowing with chestnuts rolling into major cities
to be sold fresh or roasted. The American chestnut was truly a heritage
tree.

All of this began to change at or slightly before the turn of the
century with the introduction of/Cryphonectria parasitica/, the causal
agent of chestnut blight. This disease reduced the American chestnut
from its position as the dominant tree species in the eastern forest
ecosystem to little more than an early-succession-stage shrub. There has
been essentially no chestnut lumber sold in the U.S. for decades, and
the bulk of the annual 20-million-pound nut crop now comes from
introduced chestnut species or imported nuts.

Despite its decimation as a lumber and nut-crop species, the American
chestnut has not gone extinct. It is considered functionally extinct
because the blight fungus does not kill the tree’s root system
underground. The American chestnut has survived by sending up stump
sprouts that grow vigorously in logged or otherwise disturbed sites, but
inevitably succumb to the blight and die back to the ground.

The chestnut version of COVID:

More than a century ago, nearly four billion American chestnut trees
were growing in the eastern U.S. They were among the largest, tallest,
and fastest-growing trees. The wood was rot-resistant, straight-grained,
and suitable for furniture, fencing, and building. The nuts fed billions
of wildlife, people and their livestock. It was almost a perfect tree,
that is, until a blight fungus killed it more than a century ago. The
chestnut blight has been called the greatest ecological disaster to
strike the world’s forests in all of history.  The American chestnut
tree survived all adversaries for 40 million years, then disappeared
within 40.

Re: [MBZ] OT Covids vax

2020-12-21 Thread Clay Monroe via Mercedes
For months on end AK crowed about all the empty beds. It was some sort of
virtue signal that capacity was wide open and beds were going begging. Now,
there is not a spare bedpan or folding cot without people lined up for it. It
is to the point that medivac to SEA is no longer happening, since those
hospitals are at capacity. Somebody is getting very wealthy off the sick an
dying.

They must be different between the W220 and W211. The W220 ones are rebuild by
the air shock guys (I can’t recall the company name, but very reputable) and
are around $500/each, exchange.

Dr. Boy got his Pfizer stick Saturday aft, he said he only had a bit of rxn, as

that might just be due to overwork he said.

Re: [MBZ] FCPEuro say the 211 is one of the best 5 best used euro cars to buy cheap

2020-12-21 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I looked at the cost of rebuilt air units (or maybe they were new
aftermarket, I forget) and a set of 4 was like $1500 I think. This was
for the E500 that had the offroad adventure.  Then some time to swap
them, which apparently is not too hard.  I suppose it would be worth it
for a decent car to keep it on the road after say 15 years, a hell of a
lot cheaper than buying a new car.

Soak them a few minutes in clean water -- this will re-hydrate them a bit and
soften the shell.

Cut an X through the rough part of the shell, if you don't they explode. Very
messy.

I roast them in the oven until they steam, you wan them cooked all the way
through but not dry.

An acquired taste I think, very starchy for a "nut" as the storage compound
are mostly carbohydrates instead of oils.

May need an overnight soak if they are old.

[MBZ] OT More info for all you anti-vaxxers

2020-12-21 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

Feel free to rant!

I had a mild rxn to my booster shot last Monday so advised the study
team of that.  Got this canned response.  I'm going in the morning to
get another anti-body test, see if I got the actual vax and if the
booster kicked in my immune system.  If not, I will get the actual AZ
dose sometime in the near future.

Dr. Boy got his Pfizer stick Saturday aft, he said he only had a bit of
rxn, as did his colleagues.  Some few reported some nausea and flu-like
symptoms, but that might just be due to overwork he said.

All those little germ factories pretty much guarantee you’ll get it or

cheap insurance, and it was.

I would also say that working in an elementary school pretty much guarantees
you’ll be sick the first year, then after that your immune system becomes near
bulletproof due to the constant exposure to all sorts of nasty stuff
perpetrated by the ankle biters. it’s funny, as you would see first year
teachers dropping like flies during flue season, while the legacy folks just
taking it all in stride.

Once you earned your stripes, so to speak, you were in pretty good shape. The

2020-12-21 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I got on the bandwagon when I started working in the schools in the late 1990s.
All those little germ factories pretty much guarantee you’ll get it or
something like it if you’re around them for any length of time. Seemed like
cheap insurance, and it was.

The
family would be wiped out sometimes during flu season and I wouldn’t even have
the sniffles.

I got a flu shot as soon as they were available, like in September, if I
recall. We usually get ours around the beginning of October, as our Internist’s
practice has a “mass vaccination” day where they do the flu vaccine for all of
the patients, something like several thousand in 3-4 hours. It’s quite the
setup. As soon as we saw it was available we jumped on it, so this year it was
Walgreens.

Re: [MBZ] OT Covids vax

2020-12-21 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Karl, I respect your medical experience and training (of which I have none).
Is your comment based on general experience or do you know specific examples
(e.g. things CDC prevented from doing or forced to do)?

That is a reasonable question. I tend to think that had they been allowed to
do what they wanted to do, based upon their expertise in this area, rather
than being micromanaged at every turn by people with no formal training in
medicine, public health, or any other form of scientific endeavor, that
things would have been very different in terms of the course of this
epidemic and its magnitude. We have lots of examples of countries that had a
strong centralized government response, and did far better than we have in
terms of deaths per 100k.

I checked the timing on that.
She was announced in December 2013, took office January 2014, ignition

theory.

WRT autonomous vehicles, when people see them on US roads, most of them

has at least one jerk who tries to cause a collision with the AV.
Why not put the test vehicles on the road in China, where people and
governments are less likely to care?

People, in general, are known to rend the bearers of news they don't want to
hear
limb from limb, so to speak. We are continuing to get exactly the government we
have paid for, and deserve. God help us.

Currently I lay the blame on the infotainment industry, and the ill-considered
positive
feedback policies of media outlets, social and otherwise. These are currently
NOT
designed to bring out the best in people, but rather the worst.

The governor is a "Republican", we all "MA Republican" anyway. He's said he

He has encouraged people to rat out their neighbors though which has shades of

Which reminds me.Since it was broken down right in the middle of the road I
fired up the ASV to see if we could push the PB back. Amazingly the ASV fired
right up at 25F. It wasn't happy about it but it started. I do wish I'd
adjusted the valves when it was warm out.
Anyway it turns out a 9,000# machine cannot push a 14,000# on a snow covered
road. I don't actually know if the PB could be pushed at all or if the tracks
lock when its not running. I could rock it a little bit but that was all.
Ben knew how to get it working again, he's been running that machine for 20
years, it was handy having 2 of us though.

Why is it, when I read this passage, I'm hearing "let feelz set your
corporate strategy"? (and she started with GM as an engineering student,
this is not a liberal arts major or human resources manager)

We spoke with Barra one day after she announced that G.M. has plans to
electrify their entire fleet of vehicles. “Climate change is real,”
Barra told investors, “and we want to be part of the solution by putting
everyone in an electric vehicle.”
