[MBZ] Latest with jobs

2021-10-25 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Well, I received another job offer today. I started talking to this one before
the one that I accepted last week. It’s basically going to end up being around
$3k less a year than the first offer, except they cover 100% of the insurance
for employee and most of it for family. The first company was going to be about
$1600 a month in premiums. This company offers 2 weeks of vacation time
starting out, then 3 weeks after a year. First company only offers 1 week after
a year. This company will be 2-3 weeks of travel a month, mostly likely just 2.
On weeks not traveling, you are literally just at home basically off work (so
plenty of time to work on cars). Some trips may involve traveling on Sunday
but I think I can live with that. Company 1 has around 60 employees. Company 2
has about 20 and is a small family owned operation. Actually first company is
also. Current company is a large international corporate deal with the end goal
to be sold or go IPO very soon, which explains all the layoffs.

As far as current job, they came back with a figure they think they can do to
get me to stay, but still waiting for final. The difference would come in bonus
which they keep telling us they are working on it and then said they would roll
it out Nov 1. Today they gave us some info on what they thought it was going to
be, but could change. Now talking about rolling it out Jan 1. In other words,
continue to have us chase the carrot.

I bought a $20 recip saw years ago as my old Sears (rebranded Milwaukee)

There’s more truth to that than you might want to believe. I’ve done it on a
W114 and W108. Horrible, nasty job. The only positive thing is that as these
are older cars, the level of complexity in the dash is extremely low, meaning
there’s very little stuff in there to goof up while you’re doing it.

Whoever wrote the ad does not appear very knowledgeable about the car. I
wondered if they expected the blower to send air down into the footwells

2021-10-25 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
I've done it twice - on a '70 220D and a '76 300D - both W115s.
The proper way per the factory repair manual takes 16 hours to R&R - remove
the dash, all the heating ducting, etc.
The second time IPulled it out through the front center speaker hole -
enlarging it just enough to pull the fan out, then put the new one in. That
time it only took 8 hours. A lot of that time is spent lying on the floor -
would be easier with the front seats removed. I wouldn't try it today - I'm
not as limber as I was in the '80's and '90's.

2021-10-25 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Do you have a neighbor who owns a tractor with a front loader? If you do,
now is a good time to make him your "new best friend" and lift the engine
off the trailer, move it to a nice paved surface and set it on cribbing
that will let you work on it now, and get an engine hoist attached to it
later.
Something like this would work nicely for you, plus, be a lot safer than
balancing the engine on furniture dollies.

I've got one of those, I think you got yours cheaper, I think I paid $20.As
with all angle grinders I beat the ever loving snot out of mine. It's performed
well although the switch is started to get flaky, it might be from the time I
dropped it, or the other time I dropped it, or the time it caught in the cut,
smashed my arm, bounced of the wall and fell...
It was worth every penny though, when it quits I'll get another. Actually if I
see one on sale for $10 I'll snag it before this one fails.

Is PVC Pipe Alright to Use with Compressed Air?
PUBLISHED ON May 1, 2019 by Brian Farno
A question arises every now and then on whether or not PVC pipe, yes the stuff
from your local hardware store that says it is rated for 200 psi, is safe to
use as compressed air supply line. The answer is always the same, NO! OSHA
agrees – see their statement here.

Schedule 40 PVC pipe is not designed nor rated for use with compressed air or
other gases. PVC pipe will explode under pressure, it is impacted
significantly by temperature and can be difficult to get airtight.

PVC pipe was originally designed and tested for conveyance of liquids or
products that cannot be compressed, rather they can be pressurized. The
largest concern is the failure method of the piping itself. When being used
with a liquid that cannot be compressed, if there is a failure (crack or hole)
then the piping will spring a leak and not shatter. When introducing a
compressed gas, such as compressed air, if there is a failure the method ends
up being shrapnel. This YouTube video does a good job of illustrating how the
pipe shatters.

While it may seem that it takes a good amount of pressure to cause a failure in
the pipe, that is often not the case. I have chatted with some local shop
owners who decided to run PVC as a quick and cheap alternative to get their
machines up and running.

They each experienced the same failures at different points in time as well.
The worst one was a section of PVC pipe installed over a workbench failed where
an operator would normally be standing. Luckily the failure happened at night
when no one was there. Even though no one got injured this still caused a
considerable expense to the company because the compressor ran overnight trying
to pressurize a ruptured line.

Temperature will impact the PVC as well. Schedule 40 PVC is generally rated for
use between 70°F and 140°F (21°-60°C). Pipes that are installed outside or in
non temperature controlled buildings can freeze the pipes and make them brittle.

If you haven’t worked with PVC before or do not let the sealant set, it can be
hard to get a good seal, leading to leaks and a weak spot in the system.

The point of this is the cheapest, quick, and easy solutions are more often ,
the ones that will cost the most in the long run.

If you would like to discuss proper compressed air piping and how to save
compressed air on your systems, please contact us.

Re: [MBZ] Project for poos

2021-10-25 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Mine has a 500, not sure what is in that one.  When I bought it years
ago this old guy in Houston, known for rebuilding Cad engines, had
redone it, ran great.  Of course it had no power but torque was mad.

Consider an el-stupido move like catching a hose on the bumper of a car you're
backing out.
You don't want your entire air system to go out the door too, dragging your
compressor on
its side out after you. Where do you _want_ something to break then? Make it
happen.

Re: [MBZ] Shop air

2021-10-25 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
I would say that the flexible hose is very easy to install. I replaced the
PVC because it is rated for water pressure, not compressed air and it was
not routed where I wanted it.
I have a shutoff valve right at the compressor and shut it off when I don't
need the air. There are still a leaks somewhere - it will drop 15 PSI over
24 hours and I don't want the compressor running when I'm not using the air.
