There are plenty of older non DEF trucks running around here in NC. If the
situation changes, and only new trucks get to operate on the roads, there will
be even more shortages, and a huge amount of truckers will be forced to go out
of business or raise prices even higher to afford to buy expensive, new trucks.

On the previously owned market light trucks and SUV prices will crash over the
next eight weeks, and sub compact and hybrid prices will soar. On the new car
side car makers that have pinned their hopes on trucks and SUV sales will tank
hard (Ford). Manufacturers of small cars will win the day. Oops.

Marshall always contended that with a turbocharged diesel spirited acceleration
was better for fuel economy since you got into the turbo charger sooner and got
the efficiency benefit of the turbo sooner.

My TDIs are into the turbo at just above idle so which prevents turbo lag and
keeps efficiency up but I still like to wind them up...

I believe the term I have used for her driving technique is “binary throttle
control”. It applies to braking as well. Ceramic pads are a requirement for any
car she drives.

I drive like you, mainly because it’s the most efficient, however, if required
I will certainly stomp on it.

It’s all moot, as her car was driven less than 1,000 miles last year, and the
year before maybe 2,500, if that. In the grand scheme of things gas mileage
really isn’t an issue. I will say it would be nice if they ran on regular
instead of premium, but that’s a discussion for another time. The way she

My 210 99E320 would turn about 28mpg which is quite acceptable, the
99E300 (D) would do 30-32 maybe a bit higher.  The 05E320 4m wagon does
about 22mpg.  The 04E500 does about 22mpg as well, and I don't drive it
easily and it mostly 50mph or less driving around, which is not bad for
a powerful V8, and kinda surprises me.  I don't know what a non-4m E320
wagon would do, I guess it would be higher.  The 05ML500 does 15-17
depending on if I am towing the little trailer or not.  Towing the big
trailer it drops to 12 or so.

I won't even talk about the SL600...

A CLK is a bit smaller so with a 500 maybe it would get close to 25 in
normal-->spirited driving?  I don't know, just a guess, but that
wouldn't be too bad considering the performance.  A CLK320 would
probably get 30ish maybe, 20% better, which in the scheme of things
would not necessarily rule out the 500? Some mileage penalty v. fun
factor, and of course initial costs could make the equation a bit closer.

2022-03-08 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Says the guy with a super short commute.

With the exception of vacation type trips this is a lame excuse, especially if,
as a family you've got more than one vehicle. The EV becomes the around town
car and it's really good for that, immediate cabin heat being one good example.
You charge it overnight when you aren't using it. With a 220v charger sub 8
hour charging is the norm.

Re: [MBZ] Console stereos are making a comeback

2022-03-08 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
It will be interesting to see what effect the recent events have on the used
car market. I think the idea of $5/gallon gas (or more) is still not something
that people are considering yet, since the situation has been relatively short
in duration so far.

I am still actively looking for a W208/209 as a replacement for Mrs. Dan’s 97
SL500, and I’m wondering if I should hold off for a little bit to see if prices
are going to start coming down.

Re: [MBZ] I’m not sure if I heard this correctly

2022-03-08 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
All trucks in California, [and now everywhere] for example, are required to
pass EPA rules, which means only new production trucks are allowed to be
licensed. All those use DEF, made from Urea, which is now shut off from
export from Russia.. If a new DEF truck runs out of DEF Fluid, the magic
nannie electricals will shut off the truck making it an 80,000 lb brick
that does not deliver goods to market.
"For want of a nail, a shoe was lost. For want of a shoe a horse was lost.
For want of a horse a Knight was lost. For want of a Knight a battle was
lost. For want of a battle a Kingdom was lost.
For want of a Kingdom a people were lost." Thus the phrase "You've been
nailed".

Re: [MBZ] I’m not sure if I heard this correctly

2022-03-08 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Global problem. We now need russian oil to run american tractors with parts
made in china and we need russian fertilizer and urea [for DEF for the
tractors and trucks]. Thus, USA farmers don't farm as many acres and it
costs far more per production bushel. Then, we need fuel and fertilizer
[and EPA dictated DEF made from urea] to run the trucks to take the wheat
to market. All which cost more, and there is not enough of.
The opportunities for leaders across the globe to make poor decisions is
manifold in the near term.
Being very careful to avoid any political inference, we in USA are setting
on huge energy reserves, natural gas reserves, and labor reserves. The real
shortage appears to be the hard logic reserve required to make best use of
those raw materials to take them to best use and feed ourselves.

no problems.  price of nickels is up 90%, your nickels are now worth
10cents, you can pay for gas with nickels that are worth double and that
will offset the doubling of gas prices

Re: [MBZ] And now for the gas shortages

2022-03-08 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Filled up at crazy Costco last night. $4.299 for premium, $3.999 for unleaded.
You would have thought you were in the 70s during the fuel shortage.

What’s silly is that every gas station I passed on the way there and back
looked perfectly normal as far as activity.
