Happily, the solenoid can be easily replaced without removing the starter
from the car. Especially on a 240D. I have done this on my 300D W115.

Lately sometimes the starter just clicks. I hit the key a few times and it
goes. Also, after shutting the engine down, starter it still spinning but
not engaged to the flywheel. Just freewheeling. I have to unhook the
battery to stop it. If I whack it with a hammer it stops. I guess
something with the solenoid is sticking? Probably need to replace it as
well.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Coleman fuel alternative?

2022-04-26 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Will work fine in a KEROSENE Coleman lantern. It'll burn in a regular lantern
you just need some preheat, I actually did a video on that recently:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjE1pCY_VjU

NOT for use in wick lanterns, it's got lower vapor pressure so as the tank
warms up it can off-gas causing the lantern to run away.

Re: [MBZ] Colemans

2022-04-26 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Depends on the lantern, Coleman did make kerosene specific lanterns. You need
to preheat to get kerosene to light, fortunately we know a guy:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_CJZrpGCAQ

There is big debate about RUG (regular unleaded gas) in a Coleman lantern.
Nobody disputes that it will work, Coleman makes dual fuel lanterns
specifically for this. There are 2 prime points of contention:
1. RUG will clog the lantern generator (vaporizer) faster
This is true but probably not important "faster" is still a pretty long time
horizon
2. RUG has nasty additives you probably don't want to be breathing.
So don't use it indoors

I'd add one other point, RUG has a substantially higher water content than
canned fuel, you probably shouldn't leave it in the tank long term as it will
cause/promote rust. This is especially important for lanterns made after WWII
but before the 1970s. Some time in the mid '70s Coleman started coating the
inside of the steel tanks to resist rust better. Lanterns made before WWII are
mostly brass...

[MBZ] AC machines

2022-04-26 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
You recall my old robinair AC machine was giving me an error, and called local
service center who wanted $180 to look at it, then parts etc. I just bought a 1
year old new machine. Messed with the old one some more and figured it had to
be one of the pressure transducers. When powered on it shows low pressure
error. Unplugging the connector to the transducer the error would go away. When
trying to do a recovery the display would always show 31inhg. At the end when
trying to do an oil drain it would fail. I then figured if the transducer was
bad, it would not know if the was draining or not. Looking up the part number I
found the new transducers listed for sale for about $160 each off the robinair
part number. These apparently are supplied by a different manufacturer than
original as they look different. I then used the photo of the robinair part to
get the manufacturer and part number, did a search and turned up the same
transducer for $27 each. Ordered 2, replaced both of them to be sure and it’s
now working fine. No errors, does a recovery and oil drain just fine. Since I
already bought a newer machine I will probably put the old one up for sale as I
don’t think I really need 2 of them do I?

Technically, no, Lady Lake is a separate town northeast of the Villages. That

I don’t use organic pads on any of my cars. I’ve changed everything over to
Akebono. They last far longer and don’t generate anywhere near the amount of
dust that organics do.

Mrs. Dan is heck on brakes. The SL500 that she drives has over 30k on the front
Akebonos I put on it several years ago, and there’s still plenty of pad left.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Now it's the septic pump

2022-04-26 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
As rocky as the ground is where you are Allen I’m surprised you could have a
septic system. When we lived in Greenwood our house had a septic with a leach
field that was the bulk of the 1/2 acre backyard because the soil was heavy
clay. In the springtime when it was damp/rainy it wasn’t uncommon for water to
puddle in the back yard. I’m sure the previous owners had never pumped it. We
talked to a septic guy and he said to leave it alone unless there was an issue.
We took his advice.

My system has two tanks, the first is the septic tank where all the waste is
broken down, that flows by gravity into the "effluent" tank which is basically
a buffer tank to hold water, from where it gets pumped into the field.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Now it's the septic pump

2022-04-26 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I believe that’s another form of “advanced” septic. I saw those in AZ as well,
but they weren’t approved for the area we were looking at. All I know is that
the initial cost was stupid expensive and really made it unrealistic to do it
from a standpoint of cost. Investing $200k in a piece of land and having to
drop another $50-$75k before it’s even habitable doesn’t make a lot of sense to
me.

It could, but the field has perimeter drainage and there is also a backflow

Akebono are the best. Ceramic pads are harder than conventional pads but
somehow magically have more friction so you use less pressure overall and,
counterintuitively rotors should last longer.

I don’t think so. The ones I looked at used aerobic treatment and multiple
tanks to treat the effluent. They were pretty complex and had several pumps and
used electronics to manage the system, which no doubt contributed to the cost.

From my experience, no. What happens is the ground gets saturated and nothing
flows out of the fingers/leach field.

When we were considering building in Flagstaff, one area we looked at required
“advanced septic” systems. $50k+ depending on the size of the house. No thanks.

When you have a holding tank, a dose pump, and a raised mound leech
field, you need a high water alarm to tell you that the dose pump failed
before the toilet backs up into the bath tub.
