Not a bad looking example of a pre-facelift model, despite the lousy photos.

Wouldn’t go into that neighborhood alone, however. Not the best part of town.

[MBZ] OT - Fun with ADS-B

2022-06-25 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Youngest son likes to track flights, so I got him an ADS-B RaspberryPi receiver
from FlightAware. It came with a little base-loaded magnetic antenna that he
had stuck up in one of the skylights in his room, which limited the reception
somewhat.

Just put up a full blown ADS-B “stick” on the roof today and hooked it up. Not
a major difference in reception, but a lot better range, for sure. We’re
picking up flights from as far away as 100 miles and a lot more traffic to the
east and south, where there’s little in the way of topography to block our
reception.

Fun to see all the traffic going over the house.

2022-06-25 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I have to admit I'm a bit surprised. I haven't worked with any restaurant
equipment since the late 1980s but what I remember of it is that it was *not*
sophisticated. Reliability was paramount; no restaurant would be happy about
losing a freezer full of food. Therefore things were simple and overbuilt. An
extra relay or sensor would just be something that could fail and would not be
used if it were not necessary.

Maybe stuff is more "advanced" now.

2022-06-25 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Thank you !! Just send the winning lottery numbers so I can fund
development and you win the first one for free. :))
At this moment, my very fertile mind is exploring just how to do it. But,
I've alway loved a challenge and I may have just found one.
Thorium is not a rare element, it is in good supply and in most cases where
it exists is presently being re-buried simply because there is no market
for it.
Yet another reason to use it to generate power for a power hungry world.
Why drag around a 2,000 lb battery with a charge cycle life span that
demands recharging and will leave you stranded when you "could have" a
system that generates its own power. weighs less, and could last a lifetime.

I have the freezer running now and the fans reinstalled. That temp switch it
mounted right on the evaporator so I am assuming once it cools down enough then
fans will kick on. We shall see.

Yea, I do not take any credit for their schematic. Since the fans are
wired together I am not really sure why one would run but the other
would not yet both powered up fine with power applied directly.  I am
going to reinstall the fans and let the unit run for a while.  I am
assuming the evaporator needs to cool down to a certain point to close
that switch and power up the fans.  Will see what happens.

[MBZ] commercial freezer

2022-06-25 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes

The new thermostat and evaporator fan arrived and I replaced the
thermostat.  Compressor kicks on fine.  Before all this is had  one of
the 2 evaporator fans not running.  I ordered a replacement but when the
unit kicked on, neither one of them were running.  They should run when
the 2 door contact switches are closed.  I checked the voltage when my
meter and when the door switches are closed its getting around 18
volts.  Nowhere near 115 it should be.  I then went ahead and pulled
both fans and both up with power is directly applied.  So, I guess the
motors are fine but first I wonder why one of them was not working and
why now neither of them are?  Both motors are wired together then wire
into the freezer but appears one of the leads runs thru a round 2 pole
switch or sensor of some sort mounted up above the right fan near the
evaporator. I wonder if it is some sort of temperature switch.  In
looking at the attached wiring diagram, I am thinking it could be the
defrost termination switch.  I wonder if the thing has to cool down a
certain amount before the switch closes and powers on the fans?  Or
perhaps this switch is bad.  I guess I need to see if i can bypass it
and see what happens.___

Re: [MBZ] An electric Mercedes-Benz drove 747 miles without recharging

2022-06-25 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I have another point of view on the future of EV's and available
electricity.
My view is to design and produce a desk top size Thorium reactor which
would be scalable in size to power EV's including heavy haul trucks and
construction equipment.
A ball of Thorium, correctly managed, the size of a golf ball is capable of
generating all the electrical energy you would use in your lifetime. Thus,
power a car, or truck, that not only never had to be "plugged in to
recharge" but could be "plugged in" to power your house when not driving.
No batteries, no exotic elements in short supply mined by child slave
labor.. etc etc etc...
Such a "laptop reactor" would instantly resolve all the shortcomings of
wind, solar, and battery storage and disposal.
I want to become the new Elon Musk worlds richest man.

That would not be possible in my 300SD, and very unlikely in my 190D.
And 200m of elevation drop over a 1200km trip is not cheating,
especially when it's probably upwind.
The battery is 5x the capacity of the 400lb battery found in a Chevy
Spark, so one has to wonder about the cost and weight.
But over 7 miles per kWh is stellar at any reasonable speed, and doubly

If people would charge at home and schedule appropriately, we could keep

Unfortunately, the ultimate baseline power source, nukes, have been
