At this rate I will still be driving the '85 when I retire. It will need a
short block at some point I guess, but it gets great mileage and hauls a
lot. Cruise control must have blown a fuse today or something; I already
had the amp rebuilt and rarely use it but it just stopped doing anything
today. But it just keeps going. Maybe they should give some
environmentalism award or an HOV sticker to anyone driving a car more than
20 years old that gets more than 20 mpg, on the basis of all the
environmental imact they have avioded by not buying a new car every 5 years
like everyone else for the past few decades.

Re: [MBZ] EV's

2022-10-11 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
I don't know who "they" are and I have know idea what they want, but here
in LA an electric car already makes a lot of sense for a lot of people. If
the prices ever come down, they will be the best option for maybe 70% of
vehicles on our roads. Just from a cost of ownership and convenience
perspective. A lot of families could have one EV and one ICE, rather than
two ICE cars.

One of the big advantages in a major metro is no point source emissions. It
will clean up our air quite a bit. It is hard to imagine how much exhaust
comes off the 405 every day. We live just over the hill from it.

Anyway I don't see diesel trucks going anywhere soon unless we get a lot
more serious about rail infrastructure. There is a lot of infrastructure
that would need to be built to make EVs more broadly practical than they
are also.

The electic grid would be fine. The impact would be less than the advent of
residential AC. Just build it up if needed. But they will all charge off
peak anyway, just the way my thermostat already gets turned up
automatically when demand is high on hot evenings.

Not a solution to every problem but EVs are a good solution to a lot of
problems. If we got serious about separating bike lanes from car lanes and
making cycling truly safe like they did in Holland, tons of people would
ride bikes here in LA and a lot of them would be electric. An electric bike
is an impressive thing. Much more impressive than electric cars, from a
power to weight perspective. If they can ever get this Aptera thing off the
ground, it would really be a cool mode of commuter transport. Until then a
velomobile with a power hub is as close as it gets. Electric skateboards
are also impressive, but less safe. Those One Wheel things will apparently
go 100 miles on a charge or something. They weigh nothing.

Not work.

There was an OT Benzworld thread on EVs that popped up on an email feed. This
is my response.

Unless John Deere is going to make electric combines and tractors, locomotives
stop using diesel fuel, and semi trucks become electric, EVs are a virtue
signal. A refinery can only skew the crude crack a few percentage points one
way or the other as far as end products go. You like asphalt on your roads? You
need to refine crude. You like plastic for all the purposes it serves? You need
to refine crude. If you still refine crude and have no demand for gasoline, the
price drops precipitously or it becomes a waste product to be flared off, much
like natural gas on an oil rig. There is currently no fuel source with as much
Btu capacity per pound as refined petroleum products, save perhaps nuclear
energy.

Build thorium powered nuclear plants, use Fischer Troupsch to turn coal into
diesel and gasoline and the planet is saved. TPTB don't want a solution. They
want control.

And what does the battery weigh? 4 X as much battery has to reduce the
payload on the truck.

That 4 gallons can be had for under $20, right now.

I also noticed that they had to do a partial recharge of the F150

they were charged around $20 for this --- MORE than the equivalent

Now, it's not like they have to have a 35-gallon (equivalent) energy store
to match my current trucks. Roughly only 1/3 of fuel results in useful work.
The other 2/3 are lost as waste heat, via exhaust and through the cooling
system.
In theory an EV could get away with maybe a 12-gallon (equivalent) energy store,
so maybe 3x the battery that the F150 had. This would cost 3x too, of course,
and be 3x as hazardous since you can't extinguish lithium battery fires.

And recharge time would be dreadful.

These things are still toys, only suitable for well-defined commuting.
Not work.

Re: [MBZ] Short trips in a clean diesel

2022-10-11 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Lots of short trips means it’s probably going to have a clogged up DPF, and
since it keeps trying to regenerate it’s injecting more fuel but never gets to
complete. If the price is reasonable might be worth taking a chance on.
Otherwise short trips are not good with these new diesels.

Re: [MBZ] Solar Powered WiFi Cameras on Sale

2022-10-11 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Yes, they record locally, and you access the recordings through their app. You
can download or share the recordings if you want. They connect to 2.4GHz WiFi
(only) as it’s more robust for handling the bandwidth of the video.

You can access them from anywhere using the app. It can be use to set
alerts/notifications if something shows up or triggers the motion detection.
The motion detection can be adjusted to “look” for people, animals or anything,
and you can pick out where in the field of view you want motion detection.

I know whenever anyone walks across our courtyard, comes to the front door, or
moves in front of the garage at our AZ house. I’ll get a notification on my
phone of the motion detection and I can look at a 30 second clip right from the
notification or go into the app and look at it from there. I can also see real
time from any of the cameras, as well as sound, too. Recordings contain video
and sound, which you can turn on or off (sound) depending on what you want to
record.

My solar camera is covering the front door. I explained previously why it was
such a PITA to get power there, which is why I went with the solar camera.
Here’s a snapshot form it I just pulled down from the app:

[cid:5C0FA6FD-C610-4ED1-92A1-7EA15A14243B]

You can share the cameras out to others as well, so once they’re set up you
just send Regina an invite and she’ll get a link to the app and everything will
be set up for your cameras.

And yes, that’s the 2003 ML350 under the cover.

Let me know if you have more questions.

I just bought two more of them for the back 40 in AZ. That’s the south side of

[MBZ] Solar Powered WiFi Cameras on Sale

2022-10-11 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
The solar powered WiFi camera w/spotlight I have is on an amazing sale right
now at Amazon.

https://tinyurl.com/vh8fjr33

It’s normally $199 but you can use this link to get it for $129 and there
should also be a $20 off coupon as well, bringing it down to $109 (MI Mitch
should be proud of me!) It wouldn’t let me stack them, so I had to buy them
individually to get the $20 coupon. No biggie, the cost is the same.

I just bought two more of them for the back 40 in AZ. That’s the south side of
the house so there’s sun to recharge them.

These would be great for your barn/shop, Kaleb.

Re: [MBZ] The Arab Kleb

2022-10-11 Thread Robert Massmann via Mercedes
I watched my local Copart auction a week or two ago and was amazed at the
variety of countries that were buying, Mexico, European countries, and Emirates
of Arabia was one of them. I was trying to get a small Airstream trailer and
the buyer's country was listed as Ukraine.

In Okieville that’s pronounced, “A-rab K-lab.”

Re: [MBZ] I wonder how hard it is to assemble one of these?

2022-10-11 Thread Robert Massmann via Mercedes
I watch the homestead rescue program from time to time a one of the episodes
they assembled one sections are bolted together and then raised into
position. Then the next is raised and bolted to the next. I pick a calm day
to do it as they are light and flimsy until multiple unites are bolted
together. I imagine U tube would be the place to see the assembly process.
