We had a 64 like that and having learned to drive

The worst Vanagon was the diesel (1.6 liter, 48hp non-turbo same as the

I would guess a 2.0l TDI would do quite a bit better, I think they make
about 140hp?

The waterboxer in my Vanagon was just OK, it would do 70-75 on the
interstate but not really any more than that without getting pretty close
to red-line. It was pretty torquey though, and around town it was fine, at
least with the manual transmission.

There was a kit to put a Ford Focus (Zetec) engine in a Vanagon. It

engine. I'd probably do that over a Subaru conversion. Based on my
experience with my '03 Focus, the Zetec engine is bulletproof.

[MBZ] Pisten Bully update

2023-02-01 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Got back to the Pisten Bully yesterday. Monday one of the other guys walked an
excavator to it clearing the road so we could drive in.

I drew the short straw and "got to" go underneath to pull the oil pan. I don't
consider myself a small guy but in the snowmobile community I guess I'm
"skinny".
We jacked it up so it was sitting on 3 6x6 blocks which was just enough to let
me get the pan out.

There are a bunch of bolts and studs holding the thing up, it's a big pan after
all. Fortunately they all came out easily. Only one stud pulled and I only lost
one nut which fell down my coat and disappeared.

The only real victim was a rubber hose from the turbo oil return into the pan
that snapped. I'll get a chunk to replace it.

So the pan is out to get welded, the plan is to get it back this afternoon and
have it in the machine tomorrow morning. Hopefully the welder can make that
time frame, we shall see.

Adding fluids will be a trick, dang thing holds just under 5 gallons of oil and
almost 9 gallons of coolant...

I've owned diesel MBs for over 20 years. It used to be a nice combo of driving
an MB and getting decent economy fuel-wise. Probably would not buy another one,
only because the price gap from gas to diesel has grown. Diesel here is $5/g
and premium unleaded under $4.

Re: [MBZ] OT motor brushes bad?

2023-02-01 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
There are no brushes in that kind of motor. Repulsion and repulsion-start
motors,
which DO have brushes, went away mid-20th century. Our water pump used one,
and my big old air compressor has one, though I've not yet ever fired it up.

Repulsion-start induction motors have the best starting torque vs current curve,
even better than capacitor-start motors. But they're expensive, and have
brushes,
a commutator, and a shorting ring, all of which wear.

The hump on the top, and the modern paint job and construction, tell you that
this
is a motor with one or more capacitors. They fail, and when they do there's no
starting torque. They buzz until the thermal breaker pops, or the windings do.

Capacitors are very DIY friendly to replace, usually. They are a wear/fail
component,
just like brushes.

All motors need a rotating magnetic field in order to get started turning.
This can happen in one (or more) different ways:

1) Three-phase (Well, 2+ phase) power. (BG motors; VF drives; stepper
motors.)
2) Repulsion windings. (Water and air pump motors, now obsolete.)
3) Commutator. (Universal motors.)
4) Phase-delay via capacitor(s). (Most small to mid-size motors these days.)
5) Pole shading. (Small fan motors. Bathroom vents, etc.)
6) Mechanical jump-start. (Pony motor. Handwheel. I have gramps' old grinder
that needs a spin, and always did even when new.)
7) Others?

There are trade-offs among all of these.

Bad, yes. You are counting on the thermal breaker to pop to prevent
the winding from frying. These self-reset with time, so it will continue
to cycle. This will heat the winding (not good) and cycle the thermal
breaker (also not good), which could wear out. In the worst-case scenario,
the motor catches on fire when the thermal breaker stops doing its job.

The motor is drawing _starting_ current during this time, many times more
than normal running current. Heat, heat, heat. Bad, bad, bad.

[MBZ] 1996 "S-Class 320" - 146k miles - $4,350

2023-02-01 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Add claims it is a S-Class 320 “Long Wheel Base” presidential edition but
badging says "S600"

"the only single issue is a floating gas gauge which is throwing a CEL other
then that it’s perfectly fine"

I would say other issues include that owners are fans of loaded beef burritos
and have used seat pads to cover the evidence. Also it has a hideous
aftermarket radio.
