Do you remember that saying - "there is nothing more expensive than
cheap Mercedes"? Multiply that by 10 for a cheap airplane.

I’ve been prevented from doing much with the former Floyd E500 as I had rotator
cuff surgery about 3 and a half weeks ago. But today I changed the cabin air
filter under the hood, was able to do that one-handed. There was a fair amount
of accumulated pine needles, tree seed pods, and general muck in the space
below it, which I sucked out with the shop vac. Also replaced the broken engine
air intake flex tube on the right side. Removed the front piece of the engine
cover, which is cracked, and JB welded it. If that doesn’t hold I’ll shop for a
replacement on the bay of fleas. Removed the rear piece of the engine cover and
will replace the engine air filters and reinstall tomorrow.

[MBZ] Day 4 - CL600

2023-03-14 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Again, work got in my way of any really significant progress, although I was
able t put two coats of the ceramic coating on the car. Steam cleaned the trunk
liners and carpet, so that’s done and back in the car. Steam cleaned the
carpets on the driver’s side both front and back as well as cleaned out all the
nooks and crannies on either side of the seat.

The big surprise, and there are always big surprises when you get a new (to
you) car, was the trunk license plate panel.

As most of you know, the panel where the license plate is mounted is different
for NA cars than the RoW, since our license plates are smaller and a different
size. I had noticed this panel was a bit loose, which I attributed to a missing
screw, one of two that hold the panel in place. Or so I thought. Turns out
there are eight M3 studs with nuts that hold the whole panel on, being bolted
through the trunk lid. Not that it matters, but on the W215 chassis the trunk
and front fenders are fiberglass to save on weight.

So I popped the trunk lid liner so I could get at the nuts on the studs that
hold the panel on. The studs are clipped to the panel through a subframe or
bracket that was, at one time, glued to the back of the license plate panel.

I pulled everything out and laid it out on the bench. I had all the broken
pieces and fasteners, so I mixed up a batch of JB Weld and went at it.

The mounting frame is now setting up with the JB Weld to be reinstalled to the
trunk lid tomorrow. While It’s out I’ll be cleaning the area on the trunk lid
it covers. May never be off the car again, but at least I know it will be clean.

I’m hoping to get the car in the air tomorrow so I can inspect the
undercarriage and get the belly pans reinstalled. I ordered a right rear ABS
sensor from FCP Euro early this morning and it’s already shipped, should be
here on Friday or Saturday. Hoping once that’s installed the funky instrument
cluster nannies will go away.

2023-03-14 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
No more smug feeling than when your backup plans are working well,
and you're warm, snug, and dry.

Loved it a few years ago when the power had been out for a few days,
and the neighbors came up for dinner. They had: candles. (No doubt
gluten- and cruelty-free.) We had the (evil, fossil-fueled) backup genny
running, so we had (wood) heat, lights, water... They stayed for hours
before trudging back home in the dark. Basically tent camping in their
own home.

Now, today and tomorrow it’s going to rain all over whatever snow is left.
It was 80 here today but it started drizzling about an hour ago messing up my
three perfectly pristine vehicles, only two days out of the Martha-thon I had
last weekend; wash, clay bar, and wax plus interior detail on all three.
At 63, that is still as fun as ever but it isn’t as easy as it used to be.
Very evenly sore, I am.

Subject: [MBZ] I can't pass it up

This friend of mine has a 97 Suburban with like 350kmi on. She has
always had it stealer serviced since new. Put in a new transmission 4
or 5 years ago and had lots of other stuff done with it. It's actually
in pretty decent shape, no rust, body good, clear coat peeling, good
tires, tow package, but has a few little issues, nothing fatal. It's the
same colors as my 96 pickup that was my dad's so hard to tell them
 apart. It looks nice.

A year or so ago she bought a GLK and had this thing parked at the Vast
Estate while she bought a new house away from here, moved, all that. So
a few weeks ago she decides she wants to get the Sub fixed up as a spare
and I drove it to the stealer again. It was not a high priority so it
sat a bit, they finally got to it, did an oil change and diagnostic on
stuff, $278. They came up with a $3500 estimate for radiator, hoses,
(it is slowly leaking some coolant from somewhere) belt, and a few other
odds and ends. Again nothing fatal but stuff that is reasonable to do.
 Stealer pricing!

I had told her at some point she didn't need the thing but she had
nostalgia for it and wanted to keep it but this bill scared her off.
She offered it to her daughter who has no interest in it. So today she
asks me if I still want it. I tell her it depends on the number. She
talks around it all a bit and I tell her she can let me know, we can go
get it, I'll keep it around, whatever.

She finally says $500. We'll go get it, you can pay for the work, give
me the other $200whatever and it's yours. Deal. How could I pass that up.

So having just bought that GL450 for towing I'm thinking this old Sub
would be better so I should sell the GL on and use the Sub for towing.
 Choices choices, but for $500...

[MBZ] I can't pass it up

2023-03-14 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

The shadows on the photos really prevent one from seeing much at the
bottom of the car.
It does look like there might be a rusty spot just behind the right
front wheel.
