[MBZ] RANT: FB Marketplace

2023-05-20 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Yeah, I know, we’ve all heard this before, but…

I’m changing some landscaping in the front of the Florida house, and as a
result I have a bunch of these border blocks that we used to go around an area
in front of the house.

My Marketplace ad has the quantity, a description with pictures, and my
(general) location.

I got four responses for these overnight. Three of the four ask:

“How many are there?”; and

“Where are you located?”

I responded to all, “Read the ad.” Two people got nasty with me.

The lack of intelligence of the general populace is disturbing. Really.

Of course they all did the “Is this still available?” thing, too. < facepalm >
One of the three that responded also asked the price (which was clearly listed

Yep, it’s really bad. I think it’s all tied to people now totally and
completely addicted to their phones. I have always noticed this for a while but
for some reason it really hit me yesterday. I was in a fast food restaurant and
looked around as it was so quiet, every single customer in the place was
sitting with their groups all in a trance glued to their phones. At that moment
I thought about ripping the bandaid off and getting rid of my phone going back
to a flip phone. And yes I am sending this from my phone.

I’m sure that the obsessions with phones has something to do with it, but more
so it’s a matter of comprehension. It’s not like the ads are long or complex -
the information is all there.

This is the post:

https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/256788820344724/?referralSurface=messenger_lightspeed_banner&referralCode=messenger_banner

Price is at the top where it always is.

Condition is clearly stated.

A number is the first thing in the ad. Detailed description with dimensions.
Close with a location as well as the little map that FB provides.

Everything is there in clearly described text.

The only thing I can think of is that people who are scroungers just go through
and click on everything they see, and if they get a response they go for it. I
mean, why else would you get all the “Is this still available?” replies that
ask questions whose answers are clearly stated in the listing?

One of the respondents asks, “Where are you in Lakeland?” Whaaa???

I simply don’t get it. I think these people are brain damaged.

Since FB auto populates the type your words in here area with “ is this still
available”, these people find it much easier to do one click to engage,
regardless of what the ad says, rather than having to type useful words.

[MBZ] Dilemma

2023-05-20 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
We are looking at two ML 350 Bluetec SUVs for possible purchase. One is a
single owner vehicle with 34 service records, no reported accidents, all
updates, and in perfect cosmetic and mechanical condition but with 217,000
miles (!). As my mechanic said, "it was driven like sh*t and maintained
like sh*t."

The second has 138,000 miles with one minor accident and three previous
owners. Service history is less robust and there is one outstanding issue
with a "frozen rear ride sensor". It has a few more options than the other
ML (360 camera, panoramic roof, rear seat entertainment).

The price difference is $2,000 higher for the ML 350 with 138,000 miles.
Each vehicle rides about the same with no obvious issues.

We do not expect to put more than 6000 miles/year on the vehicle we
purchase.

How do I determine which is the better/less risky choice?

Re: [MBZ] Dilemma

2023-05-20 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

What years and prices on each?

You will probably have to budget $2-3k/yr for maintenance if you are
paying someone to do it.  Or if the engine kakks then it will either be
a write-off or will cost A LOT.  I'm not sure how "34 service records"
and"perfect cosmetic and mechanical condition" correlates with "it was
driven like sh*t and maintained like sh*t"

We are looking at two ML 350 Bluetec SUVs for possible purchase. One is a

updates, and in perfect cosmetic and mechanical condition but with 217,000

Not my words. Meant as a compliment, I suppose.

Both are 2014. $12.5 vs. $10.5K

The asking price on the 217k ML is non-negotiable. The other has already
come down from $16.5K and is not local.

[MBZ] Slightly O.T. AC Work on my Dodge

2023-05-20 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
A little over a year ago, after I rebuilt the HVAC box on my 2005 Dodge 2500 Cummins 5.9, I took it to a somewhat reputable shop near me to have them recharge the AC system. They recharged it and then found two small leaks: one leak is on  “the AC manifold line”, and the other is on the  “rear cover of the AC compressor”. After driving it around, in town, on these first few 100+ degree days, I feed I need to fix this. I haven’t done any appreciable AC work. What am I in store for? If I replace the manifold and the compressor do I need to replace the other big components as well? Is it worth buying some nice AC service hoses/manifold? Is getting the be cold juice a pain for a common man? AZBob Sent from Mail for Windows

Terminology? In my (limited) experience, the manifold IS the thing that bolts
to the compressor.
Usually there are O-rings there, and that is one of the most common leak points.

It can be as easy as:
1) Drain the system.
2) Disconnect manifold from compressor and replace O-rings. Reinstall
manifold.
3) Vacuum and re-charge the system.

I'd start with that, were it me.

Basdon your description it sounds like a line needs to be replaced along with
the compressor.

First, you’ll be releasing refrigerant into the air, not a good thing really.
If it’s discharged enough that it’s not making cold at this point, I wouldn’t
worry about it.

You’ll need a manifold gauge set, a vacuum pump, a can tap and some R-134a.
Don’t buy anything with dye or other crap in it, just the plain Jane cans of
R-134a that are about $10-$12 which you can get at any FLAPS.

Remove bad components, install new ones. Pull a vacuum and test for 30 minutes
or so for a leak down. If none, pull a vacuum for a couple hours then charge.

AC work is pretty straightforward.

I agree with Jim. Go the O-ring route first. And yes, I agree that the
“manifold” is likely the low pressure line to between the compressor and
expansion valve.

Yes. If you're going to save the big bucks doing your own basic AC work, you
need a gauge set
and a vacuum pump. And a dial thermometer, for the vents. It's fairly easy
work, usually. (Not always.)
Perhaps $200 gets you all the tools you need. How far does $200 go at the AC
shop?

The E320 was blowing warm this year. Two cans of R134a and the nasty squealing
sound
(from the driver's seat) is gone. $20.

Lower miles is almost always more desirable. Higher miles aren’t bad, but far
more likley to have a need for major service sooner than later. That could
easily wipe out any savings you get over the lower mileage car.

If your mechanic says the high mileage car is crap, why bother?

Re: [MBZ] RANT: FB Marketplace

2023-05-20 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I'm looking to buy a new mountain bike, the vast majority of ads fail to
mention the size of the bike. When you ask they say "Come try it, you'll like
it." Well if it's smaller than a large I won't like it, that's why I want to
know the size...

Au contraire. Mechanic did a PPI and found nothing needs attention. He

underlying "issue" is how many well maintained miles can an ML 350 bluetec

"it was driven like sh*t and maintained like sh*t.”

I don’t interpret the mechanic’s quote as a positive statement. You’re making
conflicting statements here.

And yes, in my opinion, I would rather have a high mile car with excellent
provenance than a lower one with none. Are major repairs likely? I guess, but I
don’t make my car buying decisions on assumptions. The odds are higher that it
will need some sort of work in the future, but if you’re not driving it that
much to begin with, why worry about it?

My ML550 has 180k on it. I paid a relatively good price ($6k) for it. It has
excellent provenance when it comes to the VMI. Could the POs have driven it
like idiots? Sure. Will it require major repairs in the future? Possibly.

A lower mileage example without significant provenance would have been closer
to $10k. I’ll take those odds and save the $4k. I’m not sure if I’m living
right or what, but I’ve yet to get burned on a high mileage car I bought that
had documented provenance.

It is 'manifold' because on many compressors there's more than
one inlet and outlet hole that are ganged together by the manifold.
(Not so on an old York. Definitely so on many others I've worked on.)
The heat and vibration there seems to be hard on the O-rings. The
manifolds I'm familiar with need four.

If you're worried about environmental discharge due to an incomplete
repair, there's always test refrigerant. Enviro-safe is one brand, or you
can roll your own.

> cans of R-134a that are about $10-$12 which you can get at any FLAPS.

Not in WA. I drove across the border to ID, and found a pallet stacked
higher than my head of the stuff at Wal-Mart. $10/can. Wasn't it $5/can
two years ago?

The now-ancient garage refrigerator/freezer uses R12. My dead tabletop
icemaker used R134a. I noticed that the new replacement I just bought
uses R600a. Isobutane, in other words.

Expect that 'for the environment' refrigerant changes to be legislated
now approximately every patent cycle. Of course this is not causal,
it's purely 'for the children'...

So they are asking $10.5k for the high mileage but well-maintained car.
Offer $9k, budget for repairs with the understanding that it could
either go several more years to a MILLION MILES or it might need some
major work.  If you are interested in getting one of these, that is the
risk no matter what the miles.  If it were my decision I'd work on the
lower-priced car owner and do some shrewd negotiations and buy it and
drive it and not worry about it

Or, be like Waldo, spend $4k and find a disconnected sensor

Re: [MBZ] Dilemma

2023-05-20 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
The $4k 2012GL450 just rolled over 275kmi.  The trans needs some
attention, maybe a fluid change will help it, or maybe the torque
converter clutches are shot and that will need some major work.  It is
showing the CEL for the intake manifold flaps which I need to tend to,
this is a common problem.  I knew that going in, $4k is a fair amount of
money but not in the scheme of these vehicles, I could probably unload
it and make a lot of it back but then if I wanted a "good" one it would
cost 2X more, or more.

Indeed a dilemma

[MBZ] cheepcheep fixerupper wagon -- 1999 Mercedes-Benz 320e,$700

2023-05-20 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

Looks fairly nice, take 5 Bennies and drive it home

Great old wagon that needs some love. Miles unknown. Please read!
Issues…. 1. Dash gauges do not work. The miles and warning don’t work,
but the fuel gage does and the lights do as well. 2. Rear end makes
noise. I have driven it that way for a year, but never went out of town
or father than 40 miles. 3. Transmission sometimes down shifts when
going over 55. This issue has seem to have gotten worse. 4. A/C does not
work. 5. Fender dented on right front. THE GOOD… 1. Engine runs good. 2.
Tires are in good shape. 3. Rides nice. This would be a good project to
repair or for a around town form of transportation. Open to trades in
the form of kayaks or Mountain Bikes. I just hate to let it sit.

You need several as big as your shop is. I would have at least 2-3 of them.
Heck, I have two in my 3 car garage - one on opposite walls so they’re easy to
get to. And put them in a location that makes sense and won’t get covered up by
a rolling cart or other stuff. Mine are right next to the doors where they’re
obvious and easy to get to and won’t get blocked in or covered up with
something. I have a third one I keep ”loose” so I can have it near where I’m
working if I’m doing work on a gas car, for example.

I have 2, one by the walk in door, and one at the opposite end by one of the

This is why I have a AC machine, I recover the refrigerant rather than vent it.
As expensive as 134 is I don’t want to lose anymore than I have to. If I charge
up a system and find leaks, I can simply recover the charge, fix the leaks,
pull a vacuum, then charge it again.

Re: [MBZ] RANT: FB Marketplace

2023-05-20 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Depends. If you're selling something that attracts bottom feeders, like the
rustbucket Focus I sold earlier in the year, you attract these idiots even on
Craigslist.

I described the rust and the failed brakes, and said I did not believe it would
be economical to make it roadworthy and was selling it for parts. People asked,
"does it run?" "Yes, I said in the ad the engine and transmission are good."
"Can I drive it home?" "well, it has no brakes, sooo no." "What if I'm
careful?" "Are you serious?"

Then you agree to an offer that's barely above what the scrapper is offering
and they still want to dicker over $20 or something and then they go silent.

Re: [MBZ] Dilemma

2023-05-20 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
217k is getting up there not so much for a well-maintained diesel engine but
for the transmission and all the other moving/rotating parts in the car. Wheel
bearings, suspension bushings, fluid pumps, etc. Despite the best maintenance,
stuff wears out eventually.

I'll be honest, neither of these sounds like a great deal to me but you're well
above my budget for what I'd spend on a car so my opinion is just that, an
opinion.

Are you dead-set on a diesel? For an SUV you'll have a lot more options and
lower prices with a gasoline model. If you're driving 6000 miles/yr that isn't
great for a diesel either, unless those miles are a small number of long trips.

Gas is cheaper than diesel anyway these days and has fewer maintenance concerns.

Re: [MBZ] Dilemma

2023-05-20 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
All good points, Allan.

The days of diesels being more economical when it comes to cars is pretty much
gone. Sure, there are the smaller VWs, for example, like Curt’s that get really
good mileage, but the more modern diesels won’t, and the cost of diesel fuel
isn’t likely to drop below gasoline again, I think.

If you were doing a “Marshall” and driving the length of PA weekly it might
make sense, but otherwise, it’s nothing more than a personal preference.
There’s no net gain from it, in fact, it might be more costly for a number of
reasons, which was Allan’s point.

Re: [MBZ] Slightly O.T. AC Work on my Dodge

2023-05-20 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
> I've always heard the advice to replace the receiver/dryer any time you open
> the system.

It's not _bad_ advice, but it is more trouble and cost. If you're just
replacing a few
O-rings on a manifold, the system will be 'open' for less than a minute,
followed by
an immediate vacuum. No significant moisture will intrude under these
circumstances.

IMHO it's not a bad gamble to keep the old receiver/drier if only doing this.
Or, if using test refrigerant, which has no chlorine and thus doesn't make acid
if water gets in there.

If you're willing to go a little older, ML350s seem to be plentiful at half
your price. Maybe 10 years is a magic number in pricing? Prices seem
dramatically lower for 2012 and older. Just need to avoid the bad engine years.

[MBZ] 210 diesel exhaust rattling

2023-05-20 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
The last week or so I have observed a rattle that sounded like like it was
coming from the rear. Usually only at certain RPM today I had the car running
and in park at idle exhaust rattles somewhat. I got on the ground and the rear
muffler appears to be rattling internally. I figured it was rubbing up against
a heat shield but it does not appear to be the case. Anybody ran into this
before? It’s ghetto sounding and something I want to address asap.

For the most part, yes. There can be weirdly-shaped ones, but they’re not

True, I was speaking more to O rings used on hose fittings. The top and back

[MBZ] Snap-On MTG2500 Scanner

2023-05-20 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Got one of these Snap-On diagnostic scanners. Haven’t used it in some time, but
it will do a number of tests and read codes, however, not for every module. One
nice thing about it is the ability to read real-time data, so you can have it
hooked up and collecting data while you drive the car.

I’m looking to sell it for a very reasonable amount ($100 + shipping?) with all
the cables, personality keys, etc., necessary to work on Mercedes. Another nice
thing about is that you could buy the additional modules and cables for other
brands of cars,, too. They can be found all over eBay, and I have some extra
ones that came with mine, too. I don’t use it and I just want it gone.

Here are some docs on it:

Re: [MBZ] Dilemma

2023-05-20 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
What Dan and Allen said - I gave up on Diesel cars - they just don't make
sense any more. Trucks carrying/pulling a load? Yes. A bunch of short
trips, no. After the Diesel Passat, I realized I bought the Diesel on
emotions, not logic.
That having been said, of the two options you gave, I'd choose well
maintained over lower miles, especially given that you drive almost as
little as we do. You are very unlikely to wear either of them out.
