I would agree with everyone on the battery side. I retired two Troy-Bilt weed
whackers/whatever earlier this year because I have a lawn service. I don’t miss
them at all. And I heartily agree that the latest battery technology for tools
like this is pretty extraordinary. I have not experienced it with string
trimmers, but I have with leaf blowers, and it’s amazing how powerful they are.

Re: [MBZ] Weed eater

2023-08-18 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I've just been thinking about this also.

I have an Echo 2-stroke weed eater that I paid a decent amount for. It's been
endlessly troublesome, I think because I don't use it enough. I think if you
are a lawn service and using them every day they are probably fine. I spend 20
minutes getting it running and praying it will stay running every time I use
it. I've had similar issues with my Lawn Boy 2-stroke push mower. I've had it.

I bought an Atlas (Harbor Freight) electric push mower in the spring, and been
happy with it. I use it for mowing small areas that the riding mower doesn't
reach.

Last week I bought an Atlas 18" chain saw (uses the same battery) and it made
quick work of about 4 dead trees I've been meaning to cut. Not huge trees, but
not saplings either. Probably about 4-6" diameter. Cut them like butter.

I'm convinced that with the latest generation of batteries, it finally is
making sense for the homeowner to switch. I'm planning to buy the Atlas weed
wacker next. It's nice that they all use the same battery. So far I only have
one battery and it's been enough.

Note that I don't necessarily think this is good advice for commercial use, or
very frequent use. Ultimately I think gas engines have more power and of course
will run all day, and the build quality of pro-grade equipment is definitely
higher than what you get at Harbor Freight.

But for me, who uses these a handful of times a year, it seems to make sense.

Hope so. I've had a wave of minor but annoying problems with cars this summer,
I'm a little tired of a new problem every other week.

In another, longer reply to this, at the end of the quote from

it says,

Its rugged, forgiving nature made it an excellent primary

Re: [MBZ] Now it's the AC fan

2023-08-18 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
After a moment's thought, I don't think testing the blower voltage at the final
stage is necessary, since I already verified the blower works. If it were
getting adequate power, it would be blowing.

I checked the voltages on the 4-pin connector, they all look as expected. So
with inputs good and no output, I'm diagnosing the "final stage" controller as
the problem.

Ordered the controller from NAPA, got a 20% discount code, will report how it
goes.

Grant, is there a type rating for aircraft like this?
Answer: No however, if you fly one,, or own one and fly it.. the
insurance company will require you to get a course of instruction in how to
fly a high performance tail wheel aircraft, and a requisite number of
flight hours, with instruction and solo before selling you insurance..
typically.
Then, it is a pure case of "Come to the airport and bring money"...

Re: [MBZ] Now it's the AC fan

2023-08-18 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I removed the covers under the dash and tested the blower motor by applying 12V
to the leads. It works.

I don't have the connectors handy to make up test leads for the "final stage"
controller as illustrated here:

https://cdn4.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Mercedes-W211/103-ELEC-Blower_Motor_Testing/images_large/pic09.jpg

Wondering if it's fairly safe to assume that this is my problem, since the
blower motor works, and the control panel behaves normally?

NAPA carries them, https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/ECHBR469

As does RockAuto,
https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=2062614&cc=1426429&pt=6557&jsn=884

NAPA costs more but would be an easier return if it turns out that's not the
problem.

Hoping it's just a fuse. The control panel is behaving normally, just no

I looked it up and found it's called the Boeing PT17 Stearman.

On the website
https://www.americanheritagemuseum.org/aircrafts/boeing-pt-17-stearman/
it says,

Defined as one of the most recognizable WWII trainers ever built,
the PT-17 Stearman "Kaydet" flies on into the 21st Century.

The PT-17 traces its roots to the Stearman Model 70, built as a
private venture to meet a 1934 U.S. Army Air Corps request for a
new trainer to replace its aging primary trainer fleet.
Re-engined with a Wright J-5 Whirlwind, the design was first
ordered by the U.S. Navy in 1935 as the NS-1. Using a Lycoming
R-680-5 radial engine and known as the Model 75, the Air Corps
ordered the type into production as the PT-13 in 1936. With a
variety of engines and designations, the Model 75 went on to
become one of the most widely produced and used primary trainers
in U.S. military service.

The Model 75 biplane featured a fabric-covered, welded steel tube
fuselage and spruce wing construction, and enjoyed a reputation
as a simple, cost effective design. Student pilots occupied the
front cockpit, while the instructor sat in a rear cockpit with
identical controls. Its rugged, forgiving nature made it an
excellent primary trainer, providing a relatively safe
introduction for pilot trainees into military flight.

Wingspan32 feet, 2 inches
Length 24 feet, 9 inches
Empty Weight2,635 pounds
Powerplant 1 220 hp Continental R-670-5 radial engine
Crew2
Max Speed 135 mph
ServiceCeiling 13,200 feet
Range 505 miles

I presume the power plant listing is "One 220 hp ..."

Re: [MBZ] Does Ok Don or somebody need a Boeing?

2023-08-18 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I maybe held the stick for a few minutes, at best. I had never flown a “stick”,
only aircraft with yokes, so it was an interesting experience. My co-worker had
flown planes like the Stearman for some years, so he was quite competent. Side
note - I got to ride in another Stearman with him when we were in San Diego on
business. He had some Stearman friends that we visited, and they were gracious
enough to let him take one of theirs up. It was the best of all my rides in an
open-cockpit aircraft, as pretty much any time of the year in WI when you’re at
altitude it’s pretty darned cold.

Grant, is there a type rating for aircraft like this?
