I have a black plastic cup holder thing that fits in the center console. It
came with the car. Dwight had that car for most of its later years so maybe he
installed it?

Two choices:

1.) Replace it. If they’re still available from the dealer, buy a new one.

2.) Using one of those dressmaking pins that’s shaped like a “T”, carefully
poke into the offending nozzle and see if it frees up any crud. Be careful not
to move the nozzle, or you’ll have to buy a special tool to re-aim it. If that
doesn’t clear it, go back to 1.

If you'd bought it from WalMart, you could walk up to any returns
counter within 90 days for a 'full refund', but I don't know if shipping
is refundable. When they had Ozark Trail boots on sale for $25, I
ordered both sizes which might fit me figuring it'd put me over the $35

What my industry contact says:

If it's certified API SP, GF-6, or Dexos1 Generation3, just about any
"American" oil is going to be made to meet the standard as cheaply as
possible. But that's OK, the standard is a very high hurdle. Doesn't
matter if it's Kendall, M1, Syntec, Valvoline, or Pennzoil, the oils all

EU advertising standards are higher, if it's sold in EU as 'synthetic',
it's made with more expensive base stocks than USA 'synthetic'. In USA
'synthetic' means 'whatever we want it to mean'.

One known exception: Redline exceeds SP. But my oil guy will charge me
2-3x as much as he'll sell me Kendall for.

Royal Purple is no better than anything else.
Luqui Moly didn't enter the conversation, so I can't say if it's
considered premium or not.

If it doesn't have the API logo on it, you don't want it, no matter how
flowery the advertising lingo is. Oil guy speaks well of Warren made
private label oils, including Amazon, Kirkland, or SuperTech. My last

Re: [MBZ] Obligatory oil question

2023-09-05 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
In my opinion, it doesn’t matter. I’m no oil snob, I use the minimum (at least)
of what the manufacturer recommends or better. I changed most of my cars based
on miles for years, but with our driving over the past few years being minimal
at best, I am going to an annual change interval on those that don’t hit the
mileage amount.

As long as you use a quality oil and change at or below recommended intervals,
you’re good. I don’t see the value in buying premium oil like RedLine or
LubroMoly. If you want to use oil samples to monitor your oil and change
intervals, sure, it can make sense, but the time and money invested for the
return isn’t worth it to me. And having worked with industrial engines for many
years that use oil sampling programs religiously, I could do this, it’s easily
within my abilities.

I don’t have any M103s in the stable currently, but I would likely use Mobil 1
0W-40 or higher. Probably 15W-50 due to the age and miles on the engine. For
example, my youngest son’s 2002 E320 with almost 105k on the clock was
consuming oil. It’s rarely driven for any distance, which doesn’t help. I
bumped it up from 0W-40 to 15W-50 and it’s barely used a drop in over 1,000
miles since the last change.

The M103 likes to leak, especially from the front cover. Thicker oil can slow
that down somewhat, too, as well as the possible leakage around the valve
guides, which tend to start getting sloppy in these engines around 150k.

Just my $0.02.

Re: [MBZ] Obligatory oil question

2023-09-05 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
People think that stuff is great, I'm not sure why.  I have been buying
Costco synthetic and using that, it appears to be an analog to Mobil 1
and is a lot cheaper.

My thinking is that oil today is so much better than it was 30yr ago, or
at least "better" whatever that means, so using any decent synthetic is
going to work fine.

Use Mann or Hengst filters, FCPEuro have them on sale occasionally so
you can stock up on a few, then if you send them back you'll get another
for free.  Kinda overkill for a $9 filter, but Iv'e collected 5 or 6 of
them now so worth stuffing them in one of those flat rate things from
the PO.

I was looking on Collinite's webpage for the origin of the name, but did
not find anything. Thanks for the back story.

A high-voltage REMC lineman from many, many decades ago turned me on to
Collinite. That’s what it was originally designed for, waxing high-voltage
transmission line insulators. Every couple of years as maintenance they would
do their thing and wash/wax insulators. It kept them clean and prevented
environmental goop from sticking to them. Anything decreasing the surface
conductivity on a 115kV line insulator is a Good Thing.

Re: [MBZ] Wallmarks AC juice

2023-09-05 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
This is sort of interesting, as I wondered how the third-party sales on
Walmart’s website were managed.

Poorly, it appears. I mean, think of it. You let someone piggyback on your
existing website, which is already dialed in for online sales, making the
additional load/responsibility minimal for which you can charge a goodly amount
while increasing choices for your customers. Scale it up to Walmart
proportions, and I suspect it’s a decent chunk of change.

More information about Collinite:

https://www.collinite.com/product/no-845-insulator-wax/
A user-friendlier version of the No. 476s paste, No. 845 stands as
Collinite's most legendary product to date. Famous for its
versatility, durability and DIY ease of use, "IW" is ideal for both small
and large surface area jobs where lasting protection and timely job
completion are desired, but hard buffing and frequent reapplication are
not practical. Leaves behind carnauba shine and durable polymer coating
that preserves finish and shields against the elements; UV, rain, snow,
salt, dust, dirt, grime, bugs, staining and more.

Collinite 845 Insulator Wax Review

Collinite 845 is another wax from the Collinite team. Unlike the
476s wax which is a paste, 845 is instead a liquid wax. This has
been available for decades now, which should give an indication
of just how well it performs.

Re: [MBZ] Wallmarks AC juice

2023-09-05 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
So I got 2 cans instead of 2 crates of 12 which is what the order was
for.  Immediately contacted Wallsmarks and they passed my complaint
along to the vendor.  Vendor says "glitch" in their sales system.
Whatever.  I told them I wanted the product that I paid for.  They said
no.  So then I said I wanted a full refund and return label for
shipping.  They say they can't do that but they can refund my shipping
cost on the order and half the order cost.  So that would give me 2 cans
for $15 or whatever, which is not unreasonable.  I tell them no, I want
to send the whole thing back, they pay.  They say they can't do that
(probably because you're not supposed to ship that stuff via USPS) but
can do the shipping refund and half the order as the previous offer,
best they can do.  So I say OK.  I'll wait to see if they actually carry
through.

Wallsmark has been fairly good about this, apparently the correspondence
goes through them and Pradeep in Bangladesh monitors it or something and
was prodding the vendor.

But I won't be buying anything 3rd party through El Mercado de Wal again.

I got the battery today and will put it on the charger and see if it
charges up.  I noticed the voltage regulator right next to the battery
tray and looked at it, the cable connection on it to the battery was
loose so I tightened that.  Once I get the battery charged up I'll see
tomorrow if that cures the ailment, test voltages, etc.  I'm thinking
now that was the issue.

I put mine on my newest not-in-service flooded cell battery, a 2014
Interstate Megatron.
Charged it fully, made sure the plates were flooded, and let the
Minder do its thing.

It started out, a few months after its last recharge, at 10.6V.

After a couple of days a cell or two started getting warm. After a
week, I unhooked it and the voltage plummeted to below the original 10.6.

Somehow, the minder seems to have enhanced a slightly shorted cell or
two to make them more strongly shorted.

OTOH, after a week on the minder, my second newest spare battery (a
2007 Walmart Everstart) is doing quite well, I've been using it to
jump start a lawn tractor and wouldn't hesitate to stick it in a car.

I have a Lump+tranny sitting in the garage which I understand is a
common swap into these things that improves a lot of aspects. I vaguely
recall they had GM transmissions that mated up quite well so maybe the
whole package I have would pretty much drop in.  Not that I need another

Re: [MBZ] Chicken Wagon maybe FS

2023-09-05 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
> Oh my goodness, the Chicken Wagon. Have not heard mention for it in a long
> time. I thought it was long gone.

No, still here. I paid to have the B2 piston job done, but that was right
around the
time my dad got sick, before he passed. Got very busy for a time, and the car
simply
dropped off my radar. It hasn't been driven since I picked it up in 2018.

> Run it up the FB W123 group flagpole and see how many of those clowns come
> sniffing.

I should, my wife's on FB. But the guy who sold my son his E320 has expressed
interest. Originally in the 190D my son drove up in, but I'm not ready to let
that
one go yet. But the CW? Loved the car, and it worked well, but its time with
me
might be past. My wife would LOVE to see another car go. (Or ten.)

I'm going to let him have first shot at it. I did a quick survey, and prices
are all over
the map. I'm thinking that a running, driving example can't be going for less
than $3k
these days, no matter how tired looking. I have a crack-free dash for it
hanging in the
garage. Other parts too. I already let the 300CD go a few years ago. The CW
is the
last W123 here.

>> Why is it a "wagon" and not a chicken limo?

Because it sounded stupider to me at the time. Do recall that it was purchased
as a parts car. But its engine cleaned out so well with a tiny bit of TLC that
I simply
couldn't bear to part it out. The plan had been to trailer it home, in 2002,
but I ended
up driving it the 220 miles instead. It runs well, still.

I just brought it up out of storage to wash and vacuum it. The battery was
weak, could
barely crank after a glow, but after only a few revs it fired right up. Gd
car!

There are a couple of choices here, none ideal:

1.) Bleed/flush the system to get rid of the old fluid in the front of the
reservoir; or,

2.) Remove the reservoir, drain, and clean it. You would want a new set of
rubber bushings/o-rings for the master cylinder where the reservoir attaches.

#2 has some potential for damage, as the plastic on these is probably pretty
brittle by now, but I’ve done it.

I could use my Speedi-Bleed and push the excess fluid out of the
