Re: [MBZ] W211 E500 more air suspension questions

2024-05-01 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
FCP Euro is listing only the rebuilt struts. RockAuto has both rebuilt and new.

Here's the Arnott page about them, but I can't say that it's particularly
enlightening.

https://www.arnottindustries.com/all-struts-shocks/

I guess what they say about the OE cores "they eventually wear out and can no
longer be rebuilt" makes some sense. They say theirs are "Engineered &
assembled in the USA"

I compared the specifications, and they look the same except that the rebuilt
struts list "Adjustable Damping - Yes" and the new ones say No.

FCP Euro lifetime warranties everything, so I'll probably buy the rebuilts from
them despite the higher price vs. RockAuto. Basically would end up paying about
$250 more for the lifetime warranty.

Arnott apparently does buy cores but they list the 03-09 E-Class (W211) fronts
at only $50. Also if the car already has aftermarket struts (not sure yet) they
would not buy those.

So the professionals are saying rebuilt Arnott rather than “new” as they are

People are telling me that both the rebuilt and “new” Arnotts have the same
warranty (2 years?) If that’s the case, unless the core charge is something
spectacular, it would seem that the new ones would be the best choice. That, or
do the maths on the rebuilt ones with core and shipping charges through FCP so
you get their lifetime warranty. See what Arnott is doing for cores, that is,

sell off the cores to offset your costs.

Re: [MBZ] W211 E500 more air suspension questions

2024-05-01 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Apparently Arnott now sells "new" and "remanufactured" struts.

FCP Euro sells the rebuilt struts. Rock Auto has both.

The new ones are described as:

This new assembly replaces the O.E. strut and features a new custom
tuned shock absorber calibrated to provide an outstanding ride and
performance. The Arnott strut includes a new air bladder from
ContiTech protected by an aluminum can along with a CNC machined top
mount made from aircraft quality aluminum. This new air strut comes
pre-assembled for easy installation and includes Arnott's long
lasting seals, bump stop, heavy duty crimping rings, and connector
valve along with a dust boot to protect the strut.

The rebuilts are:

This Arnott rebuilt OE Mercedes-Benz air strut features a new
ContiTech air spring bladder along with a new CNC-machined aluminum
upper and lower piston.

They are only a few dollars different; the rebuilds do have a core charge and
require returning the old parts.

I wonder if the shops you heard from were talking about the "new" Arnott struts
or their rebuilds?

Re: [MBZ] W211 E500 more air suspension questions

2024-05-01 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
RockAuto also has these by "FCS" for $365.

https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=11387517=1426429=7556=1387

I probably sound like I'm cheaping out, and if it were a newer car I'd not
hesitate to just put new Bilsteins in it but the car is 20 years old. I'm
taking more of a "keep it on the road" approach with it. Yet I want to get
something that's not going to blow out in 18 months and especially not leave me
on the side of the road needing a tow.

I should probably try to see what brand it has on it now, whether they are the
factory originals or have already been replaced.

Is that an M110 engine? The thing probably has a top speed of about 45mph.
Seems to be missing the interior engine cover, otherwise looks pretty original.

Does that more definitively indicate something leaking in the strut? I
