[MBZ] OT: Airport

2024-06-02 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
That is _not_ new! Two players, only four score reels. Fairly simple
playfield,
and is that shorter than usual? Hard to tell from that perspective.

A machine like that, non-electronic, can be kept going indefinitely.

Re: [MBZ] O.T. Small Air Compressors

2024-06-02 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I've got a 20something gallon HF compressor, had it 5 or 6 years now. Super
handy but also super loud. Not a problem in my situation but I see now they've
got much quieter options. Mine might go live on the great northern estate and
get a quiet one for here.
The only complaint I have is that it's hard to start in the cold. It doesn't
have a proper unload valve to isolate the compressor from the tank at startup.
A relatively minor complaint though.

Do we know if one is any better than the other?

Re: [MBZ] OT: Airport

2024-06-02 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
It’s new to me!

About as analog as you can get. I love it. Any “EM” or electromachanical game
is a 240D, maybe even 220D, of the type.
Airport is a great two-player
machine from 1969.

Gottlieb produced mainly single and two-player games, often referred to as
“wedgeheads” due to the unique shape of the back box. Also consider that more
players = more $$$ for the operator, so some would argue that they weren’t as
popular, but the numbers don’t really reflect that. Remember that at the time
these were revenue-generating equipment, rarely found in someoen’s home, so the
impetus is on attracting players and making money.

I also have a Gottlieb “Jack in the
Box” (1973) which is a
four-player game. It’s in the queue for refreshing shortly.

But - my pride and joy as well as a major bucket list game I recently acquired
is Bally’s “Fireball”
(1972.) So popular that there were multiple “remakes” as well as a home
version! It has the infamous “zipper flippers” as well as multiball play (very
uncommon at the time) and the “spinning disc” feature which can make you crazy.
I can recall setting these up when new as well as servicing them on location
when I was a teenager.

As mentioned previously, I’m moving my interests from cars back to pinball
machines (I’ve had numerous games over the years) as they’re less expensive
(EMs that is, not the modern electronic stuff) and I don’t have to do a lot of
physical stuff to work on them. Also, everyone in the family can and does enjoy
them, so it’s even better…

I remember Fireball, but thought it was a lot newer than 1972.
A quick image search got me pics of one with mechanical scoreboard and
one that said "Fireball Classic" with LED scoreboard.

I'm pretty sure the one I played was the latter.
IIRC, it actually said "Fireball!" out loud when you entered 3 ball
mode, and I don't think 1972 machines talked.

They did not. In 1972 voice output could ONLY have come from a tape loop or
the like.
Fireball was apparently popular enough that they re-issued it, at least once.
These
re-issues would have been built with then-current tech.

Just like Dragon's Lair was built with a random-access videodisc player inside.
Computers of the day could not generate animation-quality video in real time.
If it were to be re-issued now it'd just generate the video directly through a
PC
with video card. Probably not even a very high-end one.

As an aside to Jim’s comments, many, many years ago when I was buying and
selling games I had a rifle shooting game themed as a duck hunter. These
different duck targets would move across the background and you shot at them.
Coming to Jim's comments, this game actually had a “soundtrack” in the sense
that there was an 8-track tape player with a very short tape in it that played
different sounds or sayings at the appropriate times. For instance, if you hit
the flying goose that was projected moving across the top of the “field” it
would trigger the player to move the head to a particular track and then play
for 3-5 seconds - “Oooh, you got me!!”

There was a lot of really cool analog stuff around like this. I was always
intrigued by it.

When I was an undergrad at Caltech, we had in the fall an activity called
the Interhouse Dance, which, contrary to its name, had very little
dancing. Each of the seven student Houses would build a more-or-less
elaborate carnival display through which the vistors would travel.

My freshman year ('67) my student House (Blacker) had the theme of Snow
White and the Seven Dwarfs and was especially elaborate. It included a
paper mache mountain 25' high over an area of perhaps 1800 ft^2 held up
by telephone poles and many 2x4s, complete with a flooded courtyard with
small bridges and paths through the insides of the mountain which had
several stops, not unlike Disneyland.

One of the "exhibits" I helped with was a wishing well into which people
would toss coins (or small rocks :-) ). Down the well and out of sight
was a small piece of thin plywood which was connected to a microswitch
such that when the plywood was hit it would actuate the microswitch
before the coin fell off.

This was connected to some relays and a stereo tape recorder playing a
tape loop. One channel of the tape loop was a splash sound and the other
were two tone bursts:

- One just before the splash sound of a pitch interpreted by
some electronics and relay to connect a loudspeaker to the
  tape recorder's amplifier, and,

- The other after the splash sound of a pitch to disconnect
  the loudspeaker.

So, when someone tossed in a coin, one would later hear a splash. The
time delay between tossing the coin and hearing the sound, of course,
would depend upon exactly where in its looping the tape loop was when
the microswitch was actuated.

Showing the audience, when we took the display apart late that the night,
we found someone had computed the mean and standard deviation and written
them on the sign.

Reminds me of when I was fresh out of school. A buddy of mine and I had
apartments
at a place that had a fair number of young singles, and we were in the sauna
talking.
Not about work, just general conversation. A cute girl and her friend came in
and sat
down during our conversation. One turns to the other rolls her eyes, and says
"Engineers"
in a rather dismissive tone.

I don't think that these Rhodes scholars had yet figured out that Engineers are
actually decent catches. Probably just as well! But, our tender wittle
feewings
were hurt, nonetheless.

I'm sure you have gotten over it by now and have found a lady who does
appreciate engineers.
