Re: [MBZ] Local W108 in MD

2024-07-13 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
I can't speak to values, other than to echo Dan that generally the crappy
ones aren't worth the effort. And sedans anyway are not worth as much as a
coupé or convertible.

As to the hydropneumatic compensator: a clever but poorly understood
contraption mounted in place of the transverse steel spring on the rear
differential. The idea is that, with some movement over uneven pavement,
the compensator would pump itself up against a nitrogen cushion to provide
height control. Same principle as the hydropneumatic system on the station
wagons: the system only provided a "levelling" function. The clever part
being that the hydropneumatic compensator did not require a pump because it
did that part itself!

They were made by Boge and are available rebuilt provided you have a core
to supply. Last time I checked it was ~$1,500 for a rebuild. I'm sure they
replace a bunch of seals and stuff, but most probably all that fails is
they lose the nitrogen gas charge. Same thing happens on the station wagons
and for that matter the 6.9 system. Different again (essentially a copy of
Citroën's system in the DS from 1955) because there are literally NO steel
springs. The car is totally dependent on the hydraulic system to stay "up",
hence the way the 6.9s sink to the ground if not used. NOT like the W100
and W109 systems, which use air, not hydraulic pressure.

I swapped in the (easily available from Mercedes) spring on my W108 in
place of the compensator. Took about 15 minutes. I have kept it just in
case...

For perspective: my less-than-100k-original-miles California 1972 W108
280SEL 4.5 with original paint and no accidents, full leather interior,
cost $3800 when I bought it in 2007.

I wouldn't drive it ONE FOOT before replacing all the rubber underhood fuel
injection hoses. Any D-Jetronic-equipped engine is a flamethrower waiting
to happen unless those hoses are serviceable.

2024-05-08 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
I have no collision coverage on any of my six (now five, alas) cars, under
the logic that I would never cause an accident and that the other party
would be insured -- because that's the law. If I did happen to cause an
accident, my liability coverage would handle the other party's claim, and
my punishment would be no relief from whatever damages my side sustained.

Alas, I did not take into account that, unlike my native Toronto, here in
the US it's not uncommon to have uninsured drivers. Which, given how
litigious people are here, seems crazy.

Absent collision coverage, I'm limited to the paltry Uninsured Driver
coverage, which makes no attempt to represent the vehicle's value.

Indeed, the fact that the other party is not insured makes this
particularly bad. While I'm "covered" for that situation, my insurance
company's limit is $3500 in property damage. So essentially a useless

Title says it all, Randy.

David, sorry to hear this, but on the bright side you and your
passenger(s), if any, were probably able to walk away from this with nary a
scratch.

I hope you can get some kind of a good settlement. If it?s any consolation,
my former 1998 E320 wagon got rear-ended recently, and initially the
insurance company wanted to fix it. After the body shop got into it, the
insurer decided they wanted to total the car out. 225k on the clock, solid,
well-maintained, but was developing some ?patina?, shall we say.

They offered $5300 out of the gate. I paid $3k for the car in 2017 with
175k in the clock as I recall.

I took the money. Probably could have griped and gotten a little more, but
I just didn?t have the time to deal with it.

Re: [MBZ] MBCA

2024-04-22 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
I was taken by surprise when the dues went up recently. I gather the MBCA
was haemorrhaging members by the thousands, so much so that the kickback
that used to come to the local chapters from the "National" level were
suspended, meaning locals had to scramble to raise funds. Others here
likely know a lot more of the details behind that.

I used to enjoy the *Star* magazine, but since their "redesign" they have
almost completely abandoned the tech columns that were really, for me, the
item of primary interest. Not because it isn't possible to find the tech
info online, but because of the variety of things that I wouldn't
necessarily be exposed to for myself; you never know what you might own in
future. I did find their occasional online events pretty good.

For me, the dealer discount isn't worth it because retail dealer prices are
way overinflated. I'd sooner order online from a dealer; the 25-35%
discount on internet orders far exceeds the MBCA discount.

The local MBCA chapter near San Francisco runs First Sunday Drives, but
those seem to involve pretty much only newer MBs. Any of my 1970s MBs would
easily be the oldest vehicles there, by a couple of decades. Lots of
post-2010, computerised appliances that I just have no interest in seeing.
They don't seem to get that it was the W123/W126 that *defined*
dependability for Mercedes.

As with any car club, it's always the same people slaving away, running
everything until they're finally broken and quit. I've seen it with the
Citroën club, the Arcane Club, the Renault club, and lately with the MBCA
Bay Area chapter.

[MBZ] 2004 W211 4-matic oddities

2023-12-27 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
I'm in Toronto for a couple of weeks and have borrowed my brother's
crumbling 2004 W211 4-matic station wagon WDBUH82J95X170353 with 410,000 km
on it (about 255,000 miles).

When cold, on dry pavement, the drivetrain has a nasty habit of
slipping/grabbing when cruising along. Under aggressive acceleration
there's no issue, it's just when you're cruising or
accelerating/decelerating mildly. It's like a shudder, with the engine RPMs
bouncing up and down. Once warmed up it goes away.

Is this a conductor plate waiting to say goodbye, or something in the
4-matic? He says it has been doing this for years.

Also, imagine my delight in seeing that it's not just my ancient 1970s MBs
that leak at the top of the windshield!

My '79 300SD has a hinged cover like the ones shown. I don't know whether

FWIW, when I last ordered front pads for my '79 300SD (WDB11612012010864) with
Bendix calipers, Tom Hanson of the Classic Centre gave me 001-420-78-20

Re: [MBZ] Help - WDDGF8AB2DR288607 2013 Mercedes C300

2023-09-28 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
I have direct experience, and yes it can be a nightmare.

Putting aside the question of whether any of these modules are so-called
"theft relevant" parts (which MB might be unwilling to sell to mere
mortals), there is the advantage that this would just be labour, not
jackhammering like earlier cars when the ignition lock decides to fail.

I still cannot believe how lucky I was that when the column lock (not the
lock cylinder... the actual column lock) failed on my 1979 300SD W116 in
110F heat on the square in Sonoma, CA, an hour from home.

We had been driving and stopped for ice cream. Got back into the car and I
could not turn the key to "on". By some miracle I was able to turn it *barely
*far enough to unlock the column so that the car could be driven. But how
to start it? Ah, a quick jumping of the starter solenoid did the trick.
Because the key could not be turned to "on", we had no turn signals, no
alternator, no ventilation. Luckily we had left the windows down, which was
a lifesaver during the sweltering 1+ hour drive home!

Then came the gruesome project of extricating the column lock without being
able to remove the lock cylinder! Again, by pure luck, the key turned JUST
far enough to disengage the anti-theft device that prevents removal of the
column lock. Mine was also not the later type (eg W124, later W126) where
unless the key is in the "on" position, you cannot disconnect the
electrical components at the back of the column lock.

The whole thing took about a day to R&R but in the end, successful! Out of
an abundance of caution, I ordered a replacement ignition lock cylinder
(originals are NLA and the "service" cylinders are slightly different and
need adapting to be installed), and in the end it worked out. I've saved
the functional original lock cylinder in case I ever want to put it back. I
might one day get around to refurbishing it. It's a relatively simple
system inside.

Re: [MBZ] Tires for old cars

2023-07-25 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
The tires are tubeless, but would originally have had tubes and can be run
safely with or without depending on the application.

On the DS, with rim landings that are not "safety landings", you ought to
run tubes, but plenty of people do not. The 2CV tires are also tubeless.
But since the rims frequently leak, tubes are a help. In both cases the
tires are designed to safely accommodate tubes, not a given for most modern
tires because of heat buildup.

And yes, price is high, but again depends on how you use the car. Export
price is without VAT. Free shipping to the US.

Vague in a bad way. Not quite bad enough for me to get rid of them, but bad
enough that I would never repeat the error.

I'm thinking of ordering a set of Michelin MXV-P tires
https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/185hr14-michelin-mxv-p.html from
Longstone. I've ordered from them for my Citroëns several times over the
years. Note that these are genuine Michelins, not licensed copies. For a
while they were made in France, lately in Serbia.

The 2CV got a set of
https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/125sr15-michelin-x.html and the DS got
https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/180hr15-michelin-xas.html on the *front*
and narrower https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/165vr15-michelin-xas.html on
the *rear*, as was supplied from the factory!

The tires arrived quickly (ordered from UK on Monday, received in
California on Friday) and were cheaper than Coker. Generally free shipping.
Of course vastly more expensive than the Kinergy ($250/tire vs $90), but
also vastly better, IMHO. Depends on how you use the car.

[MBZ] W108 heater o-rings

2023-07-11 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
Good day,

I'm in the middle of the nightmare of removing the heater core from my
W108.068. This was prompted by the death of the fan motor. Since I'm in
there and they're leaking a tad, I will be replacing the o-rings at the two
valves. I gather it's 000-835-12-98 and 000-835-13-98 and that one or the
other is NLA from MB.

Does anyone have any leads on the substitute? I gather one or the other is
an x-profile, which I'm betting is what's NLA.

Appreciate any thoughts on the o-rings, cables, or any other aspect of this
epic job.

Re: [MBZ] W116 parking brakes

2023-07-11 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
AFAIK, only the 6.9 had torque compensation. I would imagine the chapter on
the rear axle would cover which models had what design.

Craig wrote:

Has anyone had experience with these? Or those of another model?

I am reading 42-530 and it isn't entirely clear.

It has illustrations of two rear brake and parking brake assemblies.

The first is titled, "Diagonal swing axle layout."

The second is titled, "Diagonal swing axle with initial torque
   compensation."

It does not, however, tell how to distinguish between the two or how to
determine which one's car has.

The difference is in the reassembly:

11. Install adjusting device (21 through 23) in both brake shoes, that
adjusting wheel (22) of diagonal swing axle faces forward.

  versus

12. Adjusting wheel (22) of diagonal swing axle with starting torque
compensation must face down.

In addition, getting the springs out without the special tools is rather
difficult. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

[MBZ] W116 adjustment of power windows

2022-09-27 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
Good afternoon,

I'm noticing on my W116 that the power windows, particularly the front
passenger-side, "twist" as the are raised/lowered. Meaning the window tips
forward during raising and backward during lowering.

Is there some kind of adjustment of the vertical rails in the door? I see
there's inboard/outboard adjustment for the vertical rail, but I don't see
a fore-aft adjustment.

Or, put another way, how do I get the window to stop twisting like that.

Thanks,

D.

PS: the genuine front driver's side regulator is NLA, passenger side is
still out there but I assume not for long. My replacement aftermarket
lifter for the driver's side lasted about two weeks.

(Once again, if anyone's feeling like seeing how the French do it...)

Interest has been strong for this year’s West Coast Citroën Rendez Vous,
October 21st through 23rd, 2022, in Sonora, California

Save $10 per person if you register before September 1, 2022!

*THE VENUE*
After considering locations all the way from Pacific Grove east through
Salinas and San Juan Bautista, we are pleased to announce that we settled
on Sonora.

In the beautiful Sierra Nevada Foothills and at the very heart of
California's "Gold Country", the town is named after the miners from Sonora
Mexico who settled the City in 1848. Known as the "Queen of the Southern
Mines", Sonora still holds on to its historic downtown charm while thriving
as the commercial, government and cultural center for the region.

Our home base for the weekend will be the Best Western Sonora Oaks Hotel.
Rooms include a full breakfast, WiFi, and access to the on-site pool. Our
group rate is $144/night and they've agreed to offer that rate for 30
rooms. After that it is market rate, which is usually about $165/night.

IMPORTANT: in addition to registering for the Rendez Vous here:

https://forms.gle/ENARZ17WhDH8Pp6bA

You MUST separately make a hotel booking at this link:

https://www.bestwestern.com/en_US/book/hotel-rooms.05408.html?groupId=3X5TE0C1

*THE PROGRAMME*
On Friday night you're encouraged to join us for a casual, prepare-your-own
dinner on the hotel BBQ, or drop by for drinks before exploring dinner
options in town. We will send more information about that as the date
approaches.

On Saturday morning we'll head out on a scenic drive through incredibly
beautiful foothills. Our endpoint will be the home of longtime SFRCCC
members Susan and Peter Kendall. There we will enjoy included soft drinks
and whichever of these boxed lunches you’ve selected at registration:

*Thanksgiving*
Roasted Turkey, spiced cranberry sauce, mayo, lettuce, on "stuffing" bread.
*OR*

*Roast Beef*Roasted and sliced tri-tip, horseradish cream cheese spread,
caramelized onions, lettuce, on a ciabatta roll.
*OR*
*Veggie*
Sautéed onions, peppers, and mushrooms, with alfalfa sprouts, tomato,
cucumber, Provolone cheese, fresh hummus, on sliced multi-grain bread.

Over lunch, hang out and chat amongst the cars, and take in a technical
session or two under the lift in Peter's dream garage.

The Kendalls live just 10 minutes away from both downtown Sonora and the
hotel, so Saturday afternoon you can either dip into a museum in town, or
dip into the hotel's pool. Your choice!

From 6pm on Saturday we will enjoy finger food and beverages in advance of
a 7pm plated dinner at the hotel's Oak Glen room. You’ll start with an
appetizer and whichever of these options you selected at registration:

*Grilled Moroccan Chicken Supreme* w/ Black Currant-Tomato Chutney,
Preserved Lemon Rice Pilaf,
Braised Brussels Sprouts w/ Creamy Sriracha & Shaved Asiago
*OR*
*Grilled Ahi Tuna Steak* w/ Mango Salsa, Coconut Rice,
Broccoli, Onion, Red Pepper, Summer Squash Stir-fry
*OR*
*Wild Mushroom Ragout* on Creamy Coconut Polenta w/ Parsnips, Chick Peas &
Miso
Broccoli, Onion, Red Pepper, Summer Squash Stir-fry

Your three-course dinner INCLUDES all soft drinks, wine, beer, and coffee.

During dinner on Saturday night we will enjoy some very special
entertainment and an awards programme.

While there are no planned events on Sunday, we'll be sending you more
information about local sights and driving routes that you can explore
individually.

Also new this year: there are delicious gluten-free and special diet
options for both the boxed lunch and the plated dinner. Just use the
checkbox on the registration form and we will get in touch with you to sort
out the details.

*SEE YOU IN OCTOBER*
We are so pleased to be organizing this year's Rendez Vous, and look
forward to seeing all of you who can join us in Sonora!

IIRC, automatic dishwashER detergent, laundry detergent intended for
front-loaders (with the "HE" logo), and TSP are all good because they don't
foam. Other detergents foam up and/or do not rinse off easily.

At least he had the good sense to install a roll bar.

Re: [MBZ] W108 heater blower motor - accessible through cowl vent channels?

2022-08-05 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
Thanks Jaime, Dan, and Don for your responses. I'll take a crack at it. I
guess I should have bought those W108 cowl filter inserts when they were on
sale from the Classic Centre a couple of months ago!

I'll be spending a few days on the W108 anyway; ordered a new fuel tank
from the Classic Centre (that's a BIG box!) and will be swapping that in
with new fuel lines, filter, sender, etc.

Dan, you mentioned doing this proactively in a W115. Did you access the fan
similarly, by removing the cowl grille? I also have a 115 that I'd like to
treat before it fails.

I REALLY hope that a gentle push and a generous serving of ATF will save
the day, but I fear I'll be digging out the heater box etc instead.

[MBZ] W108 heater blower motor - accessible through cowl vent channels?

2022-08-04 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
Good afternoon,

My '72 280SEL 4.5 has a dead heater blower motor. It was set to "low" and
when I started the car several months ago, electrical smoke emerged from
the area above the motor that contains the filters.

My question: I know that people literally cut through the firewall to
replace the blower in a 115. Is the 108 as bad, or will I be able to
actually reach the fan itself through the air intakes on the cowl to see if
it at least turns. I don't think I can REMOVE the motor that way, but it
would be nice to see if I can at least check whether the fan is seized,
maybe even put a few drops of ATF on the bearings.

Here's a video (from quite a sensible man, in California, with numerous
108-oriented videos) covering the replacement of the cabin air filters
under the cowl. In part of the video, he shows the insides of the cowl area.

Here's the URL

FYI, I got this warning when I went to the Queen of Denmark website that
Rick included in his posting:

I do logistics and mail & ups all the time, mixed in with the occasional
LTL motor freight shipments.

I use Endicia (Stamps.com) which is a paid shipping portal for USPS. I used
to use FEDEX and UPS with accounts ?.. NOW I use www.pirateship.com

Pirate Ship is a website which offers USPS and UPS

NO FEES

Anyway ?. I am shipping these around now

Rates for UPS are about HALF the rate of using my UPS account

Check it out ?. I?m amazed ?. And they offer UPS pickup for only 3.80 more

And for mercedes content I do ship some mercedes parts. Ha

Re: [MBZ] 1984 MB 300CD steering box

2022-04-23 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
Danger! Over tightening the adjustment on the box will cause sticking and
rapid wear!

The box should NOT have required adjustment after rebuilding. Setting it
properly is part of the refurb. It's possible that the shop you went to
doesn't understand that on MB steering assemblies, there's "normal" free
play of about a finger's width at the steering wheel.

They might have tried to second-guess the initial setting.

There's a process that involves a torque measuring device on the steering
wheel. In the probable absence of that device, it is better to adjust it
too loose than too tight!

Also, the flexible joint of the steering column where it enters the box
often wears out dramatically. My 115 has a HAND'S WIDTH of free play at the
wheel!

That kind of free play at the steering wheel is unthinkable today, but back
in the 70s80s90s it was understood to be normal. If you REALLY want to see
steering wheel free play, find a 70s VW bus!

I've been weighing doing this to my original-paint W108 (Horizontblau) and

[MBZ] OT: West Coast Citroen Rendez Vous Twenty-Two

2022-02-18 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
In case anyone feels like slumming it this October:

*The San Francisco Region Citroën Car Club is proud to present this year’s
West Coast Citroën Rendez Vous, October 21st through 23rd, 2022, in Sonora,
California*
*THE VENUE*

After considering venues all the way from Pacific Grove east through
Salinas and San Juan Bautista, we are pleased to announce that we settled

*THE PROGRAMME*
On Friday night we will welcome people at the registration area. You're
encouraged to join us for a casual, prepare-your-own dinner on the hotel
BBQ, or drop by for drinks before exploring dinner options in town. We will
send more information about that as the date approaches.

OR

*Roast Beef*Roasted and sliced tri-tip, horseradish cream cheese spread,
caramelized onions, lettuce, on a ciabatta roll.
OR

*Veggie*Sautéed onions, peppers, and mushrooms, with alfalfa sprouts,
tomato, cucumber, Provolone cheese, fresh hummus, on sliced multi-grain
bread.

OR
*Grilled Ahi Tuna Steak* w/ Mango Salsa, Coconut Rice,
Broccoli, Onion, Red Pepper, Summer Squash Stir-fry
OR
*Wild Mushroom Ragout* on Creamy Coconut Polenta w/ Parsnips, Chick Peas &

We are so pleased to be organizing this year's Rendez Vous, and look
forward to seeing all of you who can join. Drop a note to
citroe...@gmail.com if you have any questions, otherwise we hope to see you
in Sonora!

[MBZ] 1980 W116 300SD automatic transmission - stuck in 1st once warmed up

2022-02-04 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
Good afternoon,

A friend of mine has a 1980 W116 300SD. He reports that after about 30
minutes of driving, if you come to a stop, it will NOT shift out of 1st
unless you put it into neutral then back into drive.

I assume this is related to the
idle-in-2nd-until-the-accelerator-is-pressed mechanism.

On my 1979 300SD this is a simple rod. Is that the case for 1980, which I
believe was the first year of the dreaded vacuum controls with those
nasty little plastic cams? That was certainly the case on the W123.

Anyway, I might see the car on Sunday and will take a look at whether
there's any adjustment or anything that can be done.

Or could it be a bad kickdown switch or something like that? Odd that it
only happens once warmed up.

Transmission fluid and filter have been changed by a respected, longtime
Mercedes-Benz mechanic, but I will check the fluid level for good measure.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

As Jaime mentioned, laundry detergent is best. And I recall when this was a
topic during Dr. Booth's presence on this list, a key point was to seek out
so-called "HE" (high efficiency) detergent intended for front-loading
washers. It is the least "foamy". Not sure if that still matters, with the
current ubiquity of front-loaders in the US.

I can't see why it would need to be powder. The key point is that it
circulate and clean. I would think it would be important to RINSE very
thoroughly.

Next step will be to temporarily install the generic tumbler and then bravely

[MBZ] W116 ignition tumbler and key

2021-10-23 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
Greetings,

In case it is helpful for others, I'd like to relate my recent journey in
attempting to avert ignition tumbler failure on my '79 W116.120 (300SD). All of
the information below was confirmed with Tom Hanson at the Classic Centre.

Ignition tumblers coded to the vehicle are no longer available for W116 models.
Fortunately, it is still possible to order a generic "service" ignition tumbler
with a key that is not coded to the vehicle. The "service" tumbler may actually
use a different style of key. My W116 has the so-called "sidewinder" key, but
Tom mentioned that the service tumblers probably use the more
conventional-style keys used in 107/114/115/123 models. And by the way,
ignition tumblers for 107, 108, 114 and 115 are also NLA, even as an uncoded
service part. Only the later 123 tumblers remain available.

I also ordered two replacement keys that ARE coded to the vehicle. These are
still available, but under A2017600306 versus the original A0007600406, a fact
that my local dealer was unable to determine.

My plan is to remove the existing ignition tumbler, replace with the service
tumbler, then dismantle the old part. Sounds like the failure is caused by wear
of the lock pins, which then protrude and cause the tumbler to lock in the
housing. So I will take a look for that and make adjustments before cleaning,
lubricating, and reassembling the tumbler.

If I'm REALLY lucky, Tom is wrong and the "service" tumbler also uses a
sidewinder key. In that case, I will try to find a competent locksmith who can
modify the coding of the generic tumbler to match the vehicle keying.

I posted on this (R107) thread:

https://www.benzworld.org/threads/apparently-mb-no-longer-makes-the-ignition-tumblers-for-our-cars-so.2067042/page-4

where there's a useful link to
https://www.coolcatcorp.com/Mercedes/Lock190.html and this thread

Thanks everyone for the responses.

The provider is promising 1,000Mbps fibre to the house for $39.99/mo. Also
included is a phone line with unlimited calling to 60+ countries.

Seems like a good deal.
