Re: [MBZ] MBZ] No Start, 240D

2013-04-05 Thread M G
Which of the terminals on the starter/solenoid are you jumping with the
screwdriver?

If it's the two big bolts with the heavy wires on them then the only thing that
will happen is that the starter will turn. Just what is happening.

If you are jumping the big wire coming into the solenoid to the small contact
with the push-on terminal on it and the starter just turns then there is
something wrong with the solenoid.

My guess is that you are jumping the two big wires. Try jumping the incoming
big wire to the little terminal and it should make the starter turn the engine
over rather then just running by itself. There should be a small wire on that
small terminal. If there isn't then you need to look for it because it fell
off. (push-on connector too loose) That would also be why turning the key
doesn't make the starter work.

Over the last 4 months, I have replaced the following:
Ignition switch (electrical and mechanical portions)
Starter
Voltage regulator
Cables
Car will not start. Nothing happens when key is turned. When I turn the key
on and try to start it using the big old screwdriver, it just spins the
starter.What should I check? I'm getting annoyed.

Re: [MBZ] This week's fender repair project.

2013-03-30 Thread M G
Ha I can tell you never drove down to Key West before they built all the new
bridges.

My Dad let me drive down there part of the way back in 64 or 65 on my learners
permit. Thank god it was a VW bus. I remember that on some of the bridges the
big trucks would slow down to 5mph or less and fold in their mirrors so that
they could pass each other in opposite directions. When they could see ahead
they would hit 55 or better and every time they blew past going the other way
it rocked the old bus over to the side and blew the air diverter on the ceiling
wide open. After a couple of time we just left it open even though it wasn't
hot enough. Learned a lot that day.

Lots of fun.

Re: [MBZ] Trailer hitch done

2013-02-07 Thread M G
My understanding was that the factory used the same bolts to hold their trailer
hitch on. In any case there is an expensive aftermarket hitch that uses the
same fastening with the addition of I believe one more bolt on each side
fastened to the under side of the main body channels on each side. Since I
don't intend to pull heavy trailers I'm pretty sure that the bumper fasteners
will be good enough. If needed I can always add two bolts to the bumper to give
it a bit more hold.

The hitch that came on my 300D is done that way. Two bolts to the bumper and a
couple to the bottom of the spare tire well. I did add a bit of extra metal
inside the well (4" x 12") to kind of spread the load a bit. I haven't had any
problems with that in the 7 or so years that I've used it. So given that I
believe that for the intended use my hitch will be at least as good.

Looks fine to me! My only concern is all the bolts to the body - what is on

considerably less substantial than a factory hitch.

Regarding steering boxes... I went through quite an ordeal last year trying
to get a properly rebuilt one from several rebuilders, -Snip-

I ended up going with an MB rebuild and I'm still blown away by how it
feels each time I drive the car. People like to say that up to 20mm of
play in the wheel is normal. It may be with in acceptable wear, but its
not how a box should be when new. This box is perfectly tight and has the
precise steering of a new car. If you have the budget and plan to keep the
car for a long time, I recommend this route.

Exactly. I wasn't sure how public that info was, but yes, they are brand

According to my local MB dealer those short pieces of hose are now once again
available. You no longer have to buy the whole meter long piece. That is of

Thank you for clearing up some of my misconceptions Philip. The problem with
the program disks is not a problem if the computer is running XP directly as
the disk will be either exchanged with the disk already in the computer or if
the disk in the computer is bigger then the old disk will be cloned onto the
new disk. That way everything will still work, or should anyway.

If a used/refurbished Asus G1 or G1s was not so expensive then I would get
another one of them but it seems like they cost upwards of $1000 or more for
the couple I have found. Course those may have been on old pages from years
ago, can't tell. The one I have went to Iraq in 05 with my daughter and lasted
till now when I screwed up and forgot to clean the radiator so that the video

[MBZ] OT: Laptop info needed

2013-01-24 Thread M G
OK my turn to go off talking about MBs.

My laptop crumped. It was an Asus G1 and has served well for a long time. I
have another newer laptop that I absolutely hate as it has win7 and will not
allow XP Pro to be installed. It is an HP G60-635DX and nowhere can I find any
drivers for XP or any instructions on how to go about doing the dirty deed.
Yes I know that linux of some flavor or another may be installable but I have
some older programs that require no later then XP in order to run. No I don't
want to run XP in a virtual machine under linux or win7 as that is to me just
too cumbersome.

My thought is to see if anyone knows of a laptop that I can look for that has
drivers for XP and will allow XP to be installed. I would prefer one that runs
at 2+ ghz, has all the normal plugin possibilities, and will take a 6 gig drive
or bigger. I don't need a huge screen and don't really like the keyboards that
have a numeric keypad added in the right of the normal keyboard as I don't use
it and it puts the keyboard off center and it feels wrong.

So there it is. I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Nothing personal intended in my comment below, it was meant as an
expression of the cumulative lack of balls now shown by American business
and Americans in general. Are there no real men left who are not enslaved
by PC , womens lip and government by regulation rather than legislation?

Remember when leaders actually did things? Offending someone or some
"special class" be damned? Remember when America out produced every country
in the history of the world? Remember when America went to war to WIN...
not to "Police for the UN" ? When "Made in America" meant "Made by
Americans" who paid taxes, raised families, went to church, supported their
communities and ran their schools so their children were actually educated,
not warehoused while mom "found herself in the business world" but engaged
in the honorable profession of "motherhood"?

Look around you now and find ANY of that... tell me where it is, or why
it's gone.

My read on it all is an attitude of "waiting for government to fix it
first" while I set on my uneducated ass and draw from the public
coffers.

Damn, Ferdand Porsche said it best "Leaders make decisions, committees only
discuss problems"

For natural gas yes. IF you have propane at home then you will need a
conversion kit with different sized gas jets and the internal regulator will

Google the model number and see if it is a true commercial model. It may be a

still less then the cost of the same thing new plus the installation. ;-)

replacement window motor for the left rear door, check on what is needed on the

need of a caliper and hose as it isn't releasing right. That of course means
two calipers and hoses as well as Akibonos? at the very least. Those seem to be
the most important things. Later I will probably need to look at the condition

Re: [MBZ] 1983 Mercedes 300D Hard Starting / AC Issue.

2011-08-26 Thread M G

If I remember correctly, If the clutch isn't seized to the pulley then the
pulley should turn free and easy. If the pulley doesn't turn it is usually the
bearing on the front of the compressor that the pulley turns on. This is
usually an easy repair after you get the compressor out and does not mean the
compressor itself is bad.

I am no expert on AC but is this not an issue with the clutch? The
clutch should permit the pulley to free wheel even if the compressor
won't turn shouldn't it?

Speaking of auxiliary fans, I'm impressed at how much air
the twin fans of the 560 SEL move, and how quietly.  Could
barely hear them when they kicked on while charging the AC,
yet the hot blast of air made me have to get a string to
tie to the throttle to rev it up  rather than grasping it
directly.

Unlike everything else we've got, which roar when they
come on.

[MBZ] Router help

2008-12-23 Thread M G
My daughter asked me about the longest range wireless
router in N. She is at camp Victory and a bunch of the
people got together and bought a used satellite dish
from some of the guys who were coming home. They live
in three trailers with foot thick concrete blast walls
between them. They have two access points on two of
the trailers but since she is the only one in the
third trailer in on the deal there is no router there
and her computer doesn't get the signal. So she wants
to buy a router that she can use when she gets back. I
don't understand how a wireless router will get the
signal when her laptop can¢t but I think it is just
the size of the antenna on the laptop vs. the one on
the router. That would mean I guess that she would
connect her laptop to the router with a cable and use
that or can she just connect to it wireless without a
computer connected to the router with a cable? Anyway
I know there was talk about that on the list a while
back but I didn't pay much attention to it so if any
of you have an opinion I would be happy to pass it on
to her.

Thanks,
Manfred

Good idea. But you still need to take off the pan and
see what is in
there and put on a new filter. What's in the bottom of
the pan will
 tell
you a lot about the condition of the tranny. Maybe
drop the pan first,
clean it and put a new filter on and then do the
cooler line thing. I
like that idea, never did it on the line but makes a
lot of sense on
your own car.

From: Mitch Haley

What I'd do on a new to me car with unknown crap in
the pan:
I'd buy a filter/gasket kit. Unhook the cooling line
into
the radiator. Maybe give the radiator a shot of air to
blow the oil in it back to the pan. Put a clear hose
on the cooling line, start the car, and run it until
bubbles appear. Shut off the car, pull the pan, change
the filter, dump a gallon of fluid in. Run the engine
until the fluid comes out clear, now you've got a
converter full of new fluid. Hook up the line to the
radiator, finish filling the tranny.

[MBZ] what's the best TD

2008-02-01 Thread M G
I am thinking of looking for a 300TD. I need the room
to carry stuff that I now always find myself having to
plan ahead and bring a trailer. What I don't know is
which one is the best. My first thought is to stay
with an 81 to 84 300TD as I am familiar with that
combo because of my current 83 300D. What I don't know
is if the later 85 on up is better or not. I figure
the mileage is the same with either model and
shouldn't be any different than what I get with my
300D (about 27 combined) If so why or if not why, and
in what ways. I figure asking all of you is the only
way to get an informed intelligent answer.

Let the storm begin! :-)

Re: [MBZ] 603 really smoky after sitting a while

2008-01-11 Thread M G
Alex,

That has happened on my 300D as well as two GM vans.
One a 6.2 the other a 6.5. It has only happened after
they had been standing for a couple of weeks and I
think only if it had been raining or had a very high
humidity during that time.

I believe it happens because the moisture has seeped
into the carbon collected in the tail pipe and
loosened it. Then when you accelerate the higher
velocity of the exhaust gases at the higher RPM before
the transmission shifts knocks the carbon loose and
blows it out in a black cloud. If you tend to
accelerate hard all the time it seems to lessen the
amount of carbon blowout after standing. Conversely if
you drive the car very easily and don't let the rpm
build up a lot then the deposits seem to get worse and
cause a lot more carbon blowout the next time the car
sits for a time or even if you suddenly decide to
accelerate hard some time you may have more carbon
blowout then you would otherwise. It doesn't mean that
the car is suddenly using more fuel.

At least that is what I have surmised from the
observations in about 15 years of driving diesels.

Re: [MBZ] 123 frontend rebuild

2007-12-20 Thread M G
Luther,

At the risk of having people get upset with me, I
reply anyway.

I have an 83 300D so I know this worked with my car. I
had to replace the lower ball joints, so I jacked up
the car and put jack stands under it near the front.

Then I tried to put the spring compressor, which I
bought from HF, on the spring. There wasn't enough
room to use it so I decided to at least get the
springs out and have the ball joints pressed in while
I worry about getting another type of spring
compressor to put it all together later. Since I was
outside and knew that the springs could come out of
there with quite a bit of force I made sure that there
was nothing in the way to get damaged or no one there
to get hurt just in case. Mind you I don't recommend
that anyone do this as you could very likely get hurt
big time.

Then I put the floor jack right under the ball joint
and jacked up a bit so I could disconnected
everything. That done I got on the hood just to make
sure that I wouldn't be in the firing line (OK so I'm
a wimp and a scardy cat) and slowly let the jack down.
Total anticlimax in this case. Nothing happened other
then the jack went down and the spring relaxed. The
spring was all loose in place with no tension on it at
all. I made sure of that before I came down off the
hood by poking it with a stick (yes I used to poke
sleeping dogs also, I had to learn everything the hard
way). In order to get the spring out I had to push
down on the hub/control arm so that the control arm
would go down far enough for the bottom of the spring
to clear it's seat.

Like I said, that was on my car. If it will be the
same on yours I don't know. If anyone decides to try
it this way they need to be aware that they are taking
a risk of precipitating a catastrophic event that
might cause irreparable harm to life limb and
property! What can I say, I'm just a calculated risk
taker. Mind you I do not like to gamble so that should
tell you how closely I watch and assess the risks I
take.

Oh by the way, assembly was the reverse of disassembly
and also went without any problems.

Thank you very much for the info Kaleb. I have a 300D and really need a 300TD.
This one isn't a turbo but I guess it will have to do. Is it very hard for
someone who can do good mechanical work to change it to a turbo? I figure it
may need the parts from a UPull lot. Turbo, intake and exhaust manifolds and
the various sensors and vacuum switches. Do I have to get the complete
injection pump or can I add the parts (ADDA?) to the NA injection pump? It has
a new pump and injectors so if that can't be done then I might have to just
drive it like it is even if it will be a bit anemic compaired to the turbo 300D.

Re: [MBZ] More on Weird vacuum problem -- perplexion

2007-10-28 Thread M G
Hi Rich,

I joined the list just recently and have just been reading, not having too
much to contribute. I have been thinking a bit on your problem and I believe
that your booster is indeed bad. To my recollection there is a valve in the
booster that in the closed position allows vacuum on both sides of the
diaphragm. When the valve is opened by a push on the peddle the valve shuts off
the vacuum from the reservoir and opens a port from the outside to one side of
the diaphragm. That provides the power to put on the brakes. If the valve does
not shut off the supply from the reservoir then the vacuum in the reservoir
will go out with the vacuum on the other side of the diaphragm and vacuum in
the line from the vacuum pump will show low and the brakes will not work very
well. Just the symptoms you seem to have.

Hope I'm still remembering all of this right and it is of some use to you.
