Re: [MBZ] nails in the coffin

The Prius owner took his car to the dealer and was told it was NOT on the
recall list.
Nothing was done to the Prius.

Why do drivers continue to drive when this happens instead of shutting off the
vehicle (without locking the wheel) and then pulling over?

I'm going to have to educate my family when I get home...

There was a scare story on the radio this morning about a Pious that
unintendedly accelerated in Collyfawnya AFTER having the fix, was up to
90mph, a cop was following the guy and got in front of it to stop it
until the guy could somehow shut it off. I guess with those things, the
brakes, engine/motor, shutoff is all computer controlled, so I could see
that happening, though why just with one car and not all of them?

Re: [MBZ] Who was it that replaced their #1 rod?

2009-11-14 Thread Michael LaFleur
All the rods have to be with a certain number of grams in weight from each
other. I can't remember what it is exactly. My book is a couple of thousand
miles away.

Did you remove one of the others to balance the new one?

I reused the head bolts on my OM603.961 rebuild and they were all within spec.
A few months later I found coolant in my #5 cylinder. I don't know if it was
the head gasket (it looks good) or head bolts.

I replaced just the #1 rod at 180,000 miles. It's just over 228,000
now. So far, so good.
That was on my 94 S350.
Pulled engine and trans as a unit.
Two or three of the head bolts were out of spec and replaced. Others were okay.
You have to be prudent on what items you replace or it gets way
expensive way fast.

2009-10-07 Thread Michael LaFleur
I've replaced the fan on a W115 a little over 20 years ago. I've also removed
dashs from W123s ans W201s.

The W115 was by far the worst.

I even tried to drive the W115 without the dash and I forgot about the oil
pressure sensor line and felt the hot oil on my leg.

I tried to put my thumb over the line and drive back to my parking spot but the
pressure was too great and oil too hot.

Removing the dash on a W123 is child's play. I'm told, however, that removing
the dash on a 114/115 is the extreme opposite and takes about a day. That's why
the death of the fan motor has often meant the death of the car; the process of
getting to the fan is a little like unearthing the evap unit on a W140.

As to the 914, I am quite familiar with it having bought a 914-6 new and

a long delay and a big price increase. I still doubled my money when I sold

We've basically been told this will happen or There will be layoffs...

2009-02-04 Thread Michael LaFleur
Technically, they made one in 1985.

A 2.5 liter OM602 for the w201, w124 and w460.

I don't know what month of 1985 they started selling vehicles with these
engines, but Mercedes says they started production of this engine in April 1985.

I've never seen an '85 with one in it though.

I want to install a diesel into an older Jeep Cherokee but also want to avoid

HMMM if it was in the G class that would mean that it can have the 4wd option

California, as a state of the union, has the right to adopt any emission

States rights are where it's at baby. States can do good things and bad things

That's a slippery slope argument. In California, through the democratic process
we have decided that we want to do something about our air quality problem but
the federal government is trying to stop us. This statement is logically
meaningless:

political changes happen in California tend to eventually happen in the
rest of the country

If you don't live in California, and don't want to have the same laws, then
don't vote for them!

You are correct that overpopulation and geography are unique problems here, but
that doesn't mean we need to pass our laws based on someone elses unique
problems rather than our own!

And the issue isn't cars anyway. Modern car exhaust puts out CO2 and water.
The issue is that LA is in a bowel surrounded by mountains that block air

Re: [MBZ] What do y'all think?

2009-01-27 Thread Michael LaFleur
I don't think I've got it so wrong. I stated that the several states could do
what they want as long as it doesn't interfere with the rights that have
already been recognized (I won't say granted, because the constitution doesn't
grant rights, it only recognizes the ones we already have)

Our courts over the last 200 years have gently twisted the commerce clause to
mean anything that effects an individual via commerce. This is wrong. The
original intent I believe is that Congress has power to specify rules to
govern the manner by which people may exchange or trade goods from one state
to another, and to remove obstructions to domestic trade erected by states.

Looking at this I realize that much lower emission standards could be a
restriction to domestic trade and therefore 'may' therefore be regulated by
congress. Hmmm, I didn't think that one through all the way before.

However, it doesn't nullify my position that the states can operate
individually as long as it is kept within the bounds of the constitution. For
example, if you want free health care. Move to a state that offers it. It is
not in the power (via the constitution) for the federal government to provide
this service.

Mike, that is a gross misstatement of the law and our system of governance. We
are a Republic based on Federalism. You are completely wrong about what
individual states can do. The federal government has power to regulate LOTS of
industries in the states (and this power is found in the Constitution). In
addition, the Supreme Court (for over 200 years) has prevented states from
enacting specific laws that conflict with other states because of an
individual's rights. Its called the privileges and immunities clause. If you

LA is severely overpopulated; So is the whole world to a lesser extent. Like I
said before- population is a FACTOR in the pollution problem, but not the only
factor. It's like this:

change in particulate level = (number of people * rate they produce particles -
rate at which particles dissipate) * time

You can't pick one factor out of the equation and say it's the only thing
affecting air quality...

I don't see how selling cars to LA is some sort of right. You're not having to
pay anything. Detroit doesn't have to sell any cars in California, or anywhere
for that matter. It's their choice to try and sell cars or not, and if they
choose to then they need to follow the local laws where they sell them. Since
selling cars and making a profit isn't a right, if they can't find a way to do
it it's their problem! You seem to be saying that LA and California have some
sort of moral obligation to ensure the profitability of the American auto
industry at all costs, even if the industry is detrimental rather than
beneficial.

Why is endless unquestioning consumerism considered some sort of patriotic
duty, and moral necessity? I don't think it should be. I think people have the

I thought replacement keys were a dealer item only. I had to bring in the

Same for the guide pin. The 8mm 4 one at the top of the head. I looked all

As for the hose, I must admit I only checked a couple of sites on-line and only
found the plug. So while I was at the dealer, I got some.

I hate going to this place for parts...

Toyota FJ40 series Land Cruisers used to be available in Diesel

Re: [MBZ] Hello - Need connecting rods - OM603 - 300SDL

2009-01-20 Thread Michael LaFleur
Yes, I've got a new block. Someone from a Mercedes forum gave me one and I
shipped it here. It has been resleeved and the crank reconditioned. I have new
pistons I got a good deal on.

If there's not a used set lying around, my next best bet is to go to Metric
Motors which will sell me a balanced set ready to install. I have just about
everything else ready except for a timing chain, belt and thrust bearings.

I do need to replace the guide pin that goes through the front case. The 8mm
one that is about 4 long. The one I removed was bent and only hasabout two
good threads left. I'm lucky I was able to pull it out.

Doers anyone have one of these?

You'd be better off looking for a decent condition 603 -- the only
rods available are a complete set of the latest version, and they are
NOT inexpensive.

I assume you found a new block -- there is no way I'd use one that
had a rod tossed in it.

Pull door lining in upward direction and remove...then... Note says...
Attention! Panel is hung on and not clipped on.

Yes, I've noticed that they have been revised. At least twice as I see in the

I'm going to go ahead with the ones from Metric Motors. They've been RR'd and

If you can swing it, get the new ones -- there are several revisions to the
rods for the 603, and the latest ones are significantly heavier than the
originals. Avoid the bent rod syndrom (it happens on the 3.0L too, just not
anywhere as often as the 3.5L).

That way your grandkids will still be driving it.\

The are the third version (with 2 oiling holes for wrist pin) that first cam

They have been reconditioned with new bushings and have been balanced. I just
need to put them in.

There is one more thing I need that I keep forgetting about.

I need the 4 inch long 8mm diameter guide rail pin that goes through the head.

[MBZ] Hello - Need connecting rods - OM603 - 300SDL

2009-01-19 Thread Michael LaFleur
Hello,

I'm new to this list. It was suggested I list here for some parts that I need.

I acquired a '86 300SDL a few years ago in an inoperable condition. The number
6 connecting rod end-cap came off and busted a couple of holes in the block.
Since then, I acquired parts to restore the car and now I'm ready to put
everything back together.

I've found that the previous builder of the engine in this car used end caps
from different connecting rods when putting it together.

Anyway, the parts I have don't match and I am in need of 6 connecting rods for
my OM603.961.
