They are not seriously inferior in construction or longevity to any
other Mercedes. The lake the size and some of the features of bigger
Mercedes, but the quality of construction is as good and the design
scheme and many parts are shared with 124s. I've owned five of them and

Once you change to Mobil 1 (and some other synthetics) the scheme that's
outline in
older (up thru the mid '90s or a bit later) owner's manual doesn't
work. Mercedes solved the problem by eliminating the dipstick before they
mandated synthetic oil.

Well, that makes sense as the average person will not wait 8 hours to check
their oil, they will do it whenever or at fill up.

It also shows a consistency in MB instructions as I have a hard time NOT
doing what they say and here (old cars, synthetic oil) is obviously
something they are not interested in addressing.

Why synthetics take longer to reach the sump is still a mystery to me, but
one I don't really need to understand.

Thanks,

Chris

It worked rather reliably when conventional oil is used. Once you change

Mercedes solved the problem by eliminating the dipstick before they

The problem with Mobil 1 (and most other oils composed of group IV V
base) is that they may take as long as 6-8 hours to return to the sump
under some conditions! What's important is the TOTAL quantity of oil in
the engine - NOT the quantity of oil in the sump.

[MBZ] DIY toe in adjustment

2005-11-13 Thread Mike Piles
Hello all

I am getting ready to change the tie rod and center link on my 1985 300SD.
Is there a way I can properly adjust the toe in my self? Also my steering
wheel is not properly centered. If I pull the centering plug on the gear
box and center the gear box should the steering wheel then be centered
unless someone really screwed something up?

Thanks
Mike Piles

Re: [MBZ] DIY toe in adjustment

2005-11-13 Thread Mike Piles
I was planning on making one, the procedure as I envision it would be to
scribe a line down the middle of each of the front tires and measure the
distance between the lines on the front of the tire and on the rear of the
tire, the difference being the toe in. The only thing tat I am concerned
about is that it would be possible to get the measurements correct between
the tires but yet have the toe set incorrectly by having the distance from
the centerline of the car different on the two sides of the car. For
example for discussion sake lets say the total toe in is to be 1/4 inch.
Assuming 1/8 inch toe on each side. It would be theoretically possible to
set the toe on one side as 0 and on the other side to 1/4 If I'm all wet
or if anyone has any experience or ideas please clue me in.

Thanks

If I can get toe adjusted for $35.00 I'll probably do that. I didn't want
to pay for a whole alignment It was aligned last year and the parts I'm
changing will not affect the Caster/Camber. For a spreader bar I was
thinking about using one of those adjustable bars that they use to secure a
load in the back of a truck.

I do remember it's a fairly common metric thread, but I don't remember
exactly what it was. I just pulled the bolt from the centering hole, took it
down to the hardware store, and found one about an inch longer. Took the
longer bolt home and ground the end to a point. Instant centering tool!

Re: [MBZ] Fuel price wackiness

2005-10-26 Thread Mike Piles
My Jetta is a 2000 model TDI. Inside the filler neck is a button (on the
left side as you look in the filler hole) that gets pushed down by the fuel
cap when it is put on. The vent is there for fuel expansion. Any way if
you press this button while fueling you can put another 1.5 gallons of fuel
in +/-. The shoe horn is a figure of speech. I normally fill my Jetta using
the vent trick to the point where I have clear fuel all the way to the top
of the filler neck. I never have had a problem with fuel expansion. My
range on a highway only trip at 70 to 75 mph is about 800 miles.

Be sure not to overtighten the bolts that attach the pan to the
transmission. That's a VERY common mistake and can damage the gasket or
pan and sometimes require that they need be replaced. If tightened too
much the pan WILL distort and that can cause fluid to leak. You can also
CUT the gasket and transmission damage is likely (do NOT ask how I know
this).

Torque on the pan bolts is 7 Nm (that's only 5.2 lb-ft). If the pan is
not distorted that's all the pressure it takes to seal the pan. More is
NOT better.

The drain plugs (pan and torque converter) have a 14 Nm value (that's
only about 10.4 lb-ft).

We might make a day trip out of it sometime. It looks
 quite interesting.

Sounds like a plan; just say when. Are there many other listers out
there within a reasonable distance of St Louis? Perhaps we could turn
it into a mini listfest.

Hey Regina, can Kaleb come? Pretty please?

[MBZ] Brake shims

2005-09-14 Thread Mike Piles
I noticed that there are brake shims availble for my 300SD. Why does a disk
brake need shimming or are they for another purpose?

Thanks

[MBZ] 85 300SD Brake Job

2005-09-07 Thread Mike Piles
Hello all,

I'm getting ready to do a brake job on all four wheels of my Mercedes. What
parts can I expect to replace? I haven't been into it before.

Thanks
Mike Piles

Re: [MBZ] 85 300SD Brake Job

2005-09-07 Thread Mike Piles
II was looking for what parts that normally need replacement, especially
micellaneous pins, shims, clips ect. I don't know when it was last done or
when the rotors were replaced, so I'm expecting pads, rotors, brake lines.

Thanks
Mike

At the minimum, pads. At most, brake lines, brake fluid, pads, rotors,
calipers, and a master cylinder.
