[MBZ] Sprinter Becker code

2021-06-18 Thread Rick Hawkins Java Letterpress Cycles Photon via Mercedes
Folks,

I solved the code problem

Messaged the ebay seller and he said it’s your lucky day and gave me the code

It’s 64211 if you want to steal my radio (I also wrote it in sharpie on the top
of the unit.

Well, it mounted perfectly, powered up and took the code. I eliminated the
adapter harness and adapter antenna wire and the jvc radio and the plugs all
fit the Becker

It gets a million stations and right side speaker works which was not with the
JVC

Great radio for $25 delivered

As for the codes, I think the code is in the vin info registery BUT this is an
orphan radio now

Supposedly there is a .pdf of all Becker codes around and supposedly with
model# and radio serial you can look it up

Anyway I am happy ... I’m about to drive the sprinter to chincoteague island to
pick up a Bajaj 3 wheeled rickshaw like pickup that I hope to sell for 10.5 k

I just finished removing windshield and bondo-Ing the metal and painting it ...
was rusty and had small holes

It’s good... I had pros r and r it for $130

I also replaced the alternator and some tensioner wheels and serpentine belt
and brake light switch ... seems ok

I drove it from tybee to Aiken sc to Athens ga and back on one tank of some 25
or so gallons

That’s the news from tybee ... Instagram is printerrickthe for those who do that

[MBZ] Sprinter breaks itself

2021-02-26 Thread Rick Hawkins Java Letterpress Cycles Photon via Mercedes
Folks,

So the 2004 Dodge Benz Sprinter space hauler has been sitting for about two
months With the windshield removed while I address the unsealed windshield and
the associated Pennsylvania rust. Battery was dead so I charged it. I
started it just now and I heard a screech and saw some smoking under the hood
... I figured some idler was noisy WRONG. The serpentine belt was tossed
off. On checking I see the alternator is frozen solid. Can’t even move it with
a pipe wrench on the sort of hub back of the grooved pulley. Ideas? Odd that
the bearings would seize on sitting in the delicious salt air for two months

Ideas!

[MBZ] Covid and price of cars

2021-02-13 Thread Rick Hawkins Java Letterpress Cycles Photon via Mercedes
Folks

Whether you believe it or not, the price of ICE powered cars is really going
to keep falling no one is driving much, they don’t have jobs to go to and I
think electric cars will be super mainstream so quickly we will be amazed
look at the price of fax machines!

Our daughter who lives in the Bay Area has, count them, TWO Teslas a model
S and a 3. The S is leased and about to go back, but daughter owns the 3 so it
stays. Their third car is a Nice 2001 Lexus/ Rav 4 SUV or whatever It is
called. Daughter has driven the model 3 about 60k miles and has replaced some
tires and Tesla just warrantied the 12 volt reg car battery or deep cycle that
powers accessories or something

I think she is the norm, maybe a bit of early adopter.

In the last three years or so I have bought a Kia 2008 mini van for $200 (129k
miles) ... I fixed a few things and have driven it for 3 years About 20k miles
at the cost of fuel and an idler pulley, a few coil packs and a $50 used
alternator. Perfect car

I bought a 2008 Kia accent with 200k like new, clean stick for $350... it took
8 months to sell for $2500

And I have the 2003 sprinter with lift gate that only cost $2800 with free
Pennsylvania

I would say I have never seen cars cheaper in terms of real cost, allowing for
inflation etc

I think these ICE Mercedes cars will be $500 before you know it because no one
will want them

As for Covid, at age 66 Georgia offered me a vaccine which I took, a couple of
weeks ago (Pfizer) and an appointment next week for the second dose. I felt
crappy for at least a week after it ... mostly just tired.

[MBZ] My first car

2021-02-03 Thread Rick Hawkins Java Letterpress Cycles Photon via Mercedes
Folks,

I learned to drive in a 1951 Plymouth about 1970 ... my father bought it new
and I still have it in a field. It had normal theee on the tree manual
transmission. My mother mostly, drove that car until probably almost 1980 ...
she love hated that car.

The first car that I bought was probably another Plymouth that I bought for
parts that ended up in a field. It probably cost $20. T.he first car that I
bought and drove was a 1963 VW bus that started life as a dry cleaner delivery
van. I paid $50 about 1970 and probably spent $50 rebuilding it with mostly
used parts. An airplane mechanic helped me build the first engine. This started
a mini career for Buying VW Cars cheap with bad engines, rebuilding them and
reselling in the 70s and 80s we ran a print shop and VW repair shop ... I
have probably rebuilt 100 vw engines then I switched to Peugeot’s in 1985
and drove and drove and fixed them for almost 20 years until I bought a 300td
which I am barely driving at this point.

[MBZ] Vw experience

2020-12-07 Thread Rick Hawkins Java Letterpress Cycles Photon via Mercedes
Folks,

We had a vw repair shop that started in the same space as my print shop ... the
print shop was the name of the printing and the bug shop was the name of the
vw operation

We ran that from about 1977 to probably the mid 90s but we were done with air
cooled stuff probably by 1990. I drove nothing but VW (busses mostly) from
about 1970 to probably 1985 ... then switched to Peugeot then switched to Benz
... and I think I may be getting close to over 123 Benz ... I like the sprinter
if I can keep up with the rust on mine

[MBZ] TYBEE ISLAND

2020-03-20 Thread Rick Hawkins Java Letterpress Cycles Photon via Mercedes
Folks,

They want to close Tybee Island to residents only but have not ... the beach is
closed

Some bars etc are still open which maybe should not be

Here is the official story

https://www.cityoftybee.org/DocumentCenter/View/2009/Tybee-Emergency-Directive?bidId=

Here is a more complicated version:

City Council - my synopsis - March 18, 2020
FINAL DECISION: All businesses close at 11 pm, except restaurants may sell
take-out food until 2:45 am, if the customer has called in the order. So the
convenience stores and bars will close earlier than they normally do. Effective
on Friday evening. Can be reviewed, but effective at least until April 1st.
Unanimous vote to approve. It was originally 10 pm, but 2 bar owners asked for
11 pm.

No late fees on utility bills. No utility cut-off for "the time being."
Non-emergency City personnel are not working on-site this week.
If you usually go to the fire station for blood pressure checks, those will now
be done outside of the building.
Volunteer fire fighters will not report until further notice.
DPW are disinfecting playgrounds, beach crossovers, and continuing to do
emergency repair work.
Court has been postponed. Campground is at 50% capacity and won't accept any
more campers. No activities at campground.
Residents can still get building permits and inspections. Jan Leviner, Clerk of
Council, will continue to work remotely.
All meetings have been cancelled this week. We'll decide about next week at the
end of this week.
IT department has everyone set up to work remotely.
Dump hours are normal this week. It's a health issue to keep it open.
Mayor Shirley encourages everyone to check the FB and web site pages to stay
current.

City will allow restaurants to have 2 parking places for picking up take-out
orders. They'll use cones and signs.
Mayor Shirley communicated with Carter, Petrie and Watson. Tybee CC asked them
and Gov Kemp to defer sales taxes on businesses for the months of March and
April. It would help all business owners. The City can waive late fees for
upcoming business licenses. They can extend the deadline for another month.
There are already procedures in place to assist residents with late fees, on a
case-by-case basis.
Letter asks for their consideration in allowing a mobile testing unit on Tybee.
Ben Watson is in the health field. Ben reiterated that people should follow the
CDC recommendations.

The scheduled March 26, 202

[MBZ] Corona Virus and the price of diesel

2020-01-29 Thread Rick Hawkins Java Letterpress Cycles Photon via Mercedes
Folks

Last Thursday night I rented a Penske 2015 Freightliner 26 foot straight truck.
I was going to rent the same truck from Enterprise, cheaper I think, but they
wouldn’t take my paypal MasterCard also debit card (or cash)! So I went to
Penske.

So I loaded up my dog, Precious and a bunch of equipment moving crap and a
coffee camp stove and a cot and sleeping bag.

We drove up to Charlotte, NC and got there about 1 am. It was a pretty nice
truck with air brakes and 225k miles which seemed a lot for 5 years old. It
drove like a new truck and was really not all that noisy. The radio barely
worked.

We camped in the 37f and stayed warm with the help of some moving blankets on
top of the sleeping bag.

After our coffee, we loaded about 5 letterpresses and an Elrod machine and
probably 1000 lbs of lead $2 a lb for bullets or type. And some type. I
guess we had probably had close to 10k load.

We also stopped at ft mill, SC and looked at some more junk which I will
probably get too.

On the way home to Tybee, Friday night we stopped south of Columbia and bought
a ton of diesel for $1.68/ gal. That freightliner takes about a gallon every 8
or 9 miles.

I was surprised to get that truck as a non CDL renter. Due to the air brakes I
think it is a CDL truck. I let my CDL lapse years ago when they started
requiring medical etc ... I shouldn’t have.

I only saw one weigh station which was closed. I 95 north of Savannah,
northbound REALLY SUCKS it is horribly rough in the right lane ... I did
some left lane riding just to keep some teeth.

If you want to see photos and folly come of my crazy, you can see at Instagram
where I am printerrickthe or on Facebook

[MBZ] Sprinter key

2020-01-18 Thread Rick Hawkins Java Letterpress Cycles Photon via Mercedes
Folks,

According to the sprinter forum with this Zed Bull device, you can clone your
key to an ebay sprinter transponder key blank up to maybe 2008.

https://www.amazon.com/Programmer-Zed-Bull-Transponder-Match-110-240V/dp/B081K2R7K6/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1Q2R32G125KFL&keywords=zed+bull+key+programmer&qid=1579381645&sprefix=Zed+bull%2Caps%2C196&sr=8-2

They are maybe $36 in USA on ebay and $30 from China

I suspect you could do other transponder Benz keys as well as Toyota etc

Here’s my question ... do you have to use the device in conjunction with a PC?

My life is all Mac

This sounds like a good solution to making a number of keys

Thoughts and comments?

[MBZ] Keys Benz content

2020-01-14 Thread Rick Hawkins Java Letterpress Cycles Photon via Mercedes
Folks

I lost the key to my 2007 Kia Sedona. And the remote. I screwed around and
talked to some locksmiths etc who told me a bunch of lies and bullshit Anyway,
with some difficulty I got the key code for free from Kia Country of Savannah
Then I found a nearby locksmith who made me 2 keys for $50 which was too much,
but they fit. These are NOT transponder keys which I does not have. Has anyone
tried to program a $10 remote on a Kia? That is the next project

Now, since I have the 2004 Dodge [sprinter] with only one key, I thought I’d
look into getting a spare for that. I called the stealer in Savannah and they
will happily sell me a switchblade fob and key for get ready for this
$499. But wait, there is more THEN you have to contract with the service Dept
to get that programmed ... I didn’t even bother to get a quote on that. They
lost me at $500 for a key.

Has anyone been here and done that? Either the Kia remote or a sprinter
transponder key?

[MBZ] Dodge mercedes

2019-10-12 Thread Rick Hawkins Java Letterpress Cycles Photon via Mercedes
Folks,

So far, the cheap rusty 377k miles 2004 Dodge Sprinter has been pretty perfect.
I’ve probably driven it close to 2k miles Uses maybe a tiny bit of oil but
that is about it.

I replaced all of the rollers and brackets and the rear latch and the inside
door handle for a total of about $85 with chinese parts, I assume, from ebay
and amazon ... the slider is great now with the exception of the electric lock
which I will mess with.

I bought a $90 torsion rod for the Tommy gate and now it takes about 25 pounds
or less of force to fold it up instead of the previous probably 55 lbs to lift
it from horizontal to vertical. I have moved one 1000 lb press with it and a
bunch of heavy type cabinets

I am very happy with the sprinter

[MBZ] It’s not a Benz but....

2019-10-12 Thread Rick Hawkins Java Letterpress Cycles Photon via Mercedes
Folks,

I just bought a new to me, Yale forklift ... $1250 in Beaufort, SC The seller
is going to haul it over to me at my downtown Savannah warehouse tomorrow. It
is pretty ugly but I think it will buff out. It runs well and there don’t seem
to be any hydraulic leaks. The starter engages and turns over when the battery
is hooked up It is a little 3,000 pound unit and only weighs about 6200 lbs.

[MBZ] Glasses

2019-09-10 Thread Rick Hawkins Java Letterpress Cycles Photon via Mercedes
Folks

I used to buy my reading glasses from the dollar tree ... then they go crappier
and the don’t have my current # which is maybe 3.25+ for reading

I bought 6 great pairs for reading with the spring year pieces that rarely
break from amazon for probably $12 they are good

I use zenni for prescription glasses about $12 including freight for clear
single vision maybe $22 for sunglasses and I got some bifocals for maybe $27
but I hate them

There are my glasses stories

And on mercedes content, the dodge sprinter seems pretty perfect

I’m working on the sliding door, replacing all the rollers when I get them and
may have to get a latch

I removed a huge metal file box attached to the floor between the seats

Now I can walk from the cab through the door in the partition It is much
nicer. I also fixed the partition door latch ... just a crude assembly that had
fallen apart and had to be put back together

But I have already hauled some stuff. The hydraulic gate is good but only 1000
lbs

That is it from tybee island

[MBZ] Rusty sprinters

2019-08-31 Thread Rick Hawkins Java Letterpress Cycles Photon via Mercedes
Folks, I think that Boston $3k sprinter is more rusty than my Mennonite one.
And mine has a tommylift big platform gate that is unfortunately only 1000
pound rated

When I went to remove the Pennsylvania license plate, I got into a nightmare
scenario It was attached with stainless steel machine Phillips headed screws
driven into the probably 1/4 inch thick sealed square tube tommylift bumper and
taillight assembly the factory taillights on mine look to be disabled.
Anyway, the screws wouldn’t come out. I tried the usual abusive tricks like
striking them with a hammer and using a screwdriver and hammer in one of the
slots. Vice grips slid off of them, they were sort of panheaded with little
slope. Finally, I gave in and found the creme brûlée bernzomatic torch and
heated the hell out of them for about five minutes. After another strike with
the hammer, I removed them with some difficulty and a screwdriver

This is why I hate fusty vehicles!

[MBZ] Rick dodge sprinter travels

2019-08-28 Thread Rick Hawkins Java Letterpress Cycles Photon via Mercedes
Folks,

I flew to Philadelphia yesterday and rode an Uber and a train to Lancaster and
picked up the rusty sprinter from my friend. I drove to Winchester, va last
night and slept at a rest area in the back. Today I drove from Winchester to
tybee island and got home about midnight. The sprinter ran perfectly. The ac
was cold and the heat was hot. I drove it about 731 miles and seem to have
gotten about 24 mpg. I ran from about 65 to 70 mph most of the time and a lot
of it was in the mountains and I had no load.

Sprinters are pretty nice. This one has some rust and the back doors are beat
up and rusty and I need to adjust the sliding door, but the car is pretty
tight. Steering, brakes, engine, transmission etc seem to be all perfect.

I like it

[MBZ] 2004 mercedes sprinter

2019-08-26 Thread Rick Hawkins Java Letterpress Cycles Photon via Mercedes
Folks,

I just bought a 2004 mercedes sprinter with 377k miles on the clock and some
Pennsylvania rIt’s, too actually it is a Dodge, but it is allegedly made in
Germany.

What motivated me to buy this one is that it has a hydraulic lift gate on the
back and the price was $2850. Tomorrow evening I’m going to take a $48 flight
from SAV to Philadelphia and then a train to Lancaster, PA where my friend who
is selling me the thing will pick me up. Then I will head back to tybee island.

People seem to love/hate their sprinters and it will be interesting to see how
long this one will run. If I can get 25k miles out of it I will have paid for
it 10x on hauling presses around.

Oh and it supposedly has frigid AC. The compressor was replaced a year ago.
Oil was said to have been changed every 10k with correct spec synthetic and
Transmission had frequent fluid changes.

Wish me luck on this adventure, I’m going Tuesday and hoping to be home
Wednesday night.

[MBZ] Michigan car hoarder

2019-08-11 Thread Rick Hawkins Java Letterpress Cycles Photon via Mercedes
Folks

I have had towns breathing down my neck for the last 45 years

I get hassles from compliance officers even in Athens every couple of years
where I have heavy commercial zoning ( which is now in a bougie trendy area)
and here on tybee island just for having stuff that people might not like to
work on ... and it can take years to sell things at medium market prices

It is a problem

And some reporter would probably make fun of my Allis-Chalmers and Datsun
forklifts too

I am about to turn 65 this year and maybe don’t remember everything

I suspect I bought my 1982 300td probably around 2000 or so

That was after 20 years of driving Peugeots

I do remember that my now 25 year old daughter and I attended a gathering north
of Atlanta when she was a young teenager and met many of you She now lives in
the Bay Area and drives a Tesla model 3 which she prefers over her husbands
model S Tesla She DID drive an 84 300d turbo sedan for about 5 years and
never dinged it. It is rotting in Athens with a leaky transmission shifter rod
on the side of the tranny case. I am living on Tybee Island all the time sans
my divorcing wife

And I have a mess of diesel 123 cars that some of you need to buy
