[MBZ] C140 Coolant Issues

2008-06-23 Thread Tarek Elshenawy
Changed my coolant today...

Drained the radiator
Drained the block
Citric acid flush
Drained radiator and block again
Flushed with clean water twice

Go to fill it back up to 16,5l capacity...

Add 2 gal Mercedes antifreeze
1 bottle water wetter
Expansion tank is full

Ran engine to operating temp
Heater on max

Topped up with .25 gal clean water
Expansion tank full

Why am I nowhere close to getting 16,5l?

These days, for $5k I'd expect a well maintained car with either
a new head or no signs of leakage. No rust, no rips in the leather,
no peeling clearcoat, full sound shielding under the engine and tranny,
leak free air conditioning, fully functioning cruise and climate
 control...

Other than the weak head, the engine was stout, it's the 90's S class
with the 3.5 engine you want to watch out for.

[MBZ] W140 HVAC

2008-02-21 Thread Tarek Elshenawy
Does anyone know or can anyone verify on their vehicle the pin-out of the
three socket connector on the monovalve (duovalve)? There are four wires
leading to the connector; however I am uncertain as to which wires double
up, not to mention which wire goes to each corresponding pin.

Long story short, the new connector housing and female pins (sockets) are on
the way from the dealership. I just need to know which two wires need to be
soldered together and the order the sockets are placed in the connector.
Thanks in advance.

[MBZ] 1987 300SDL For Sale

2008-01-22 Thread Tarek Elshenawy
All who inquired, here are the details. Asking $4,000. Average NADA retail
$5,250.

1987 Mercedes-Benz 300SDL
VIN: WDBCB25D8HA329743
Mileage: 269,853
Paint Code: 623 [Light Ivory]
Interior Code: 273 [Leather Brazil Brown]

I bought the car as a second owner in March of 2003 with 180,126 miles. The
original owner purchased the car in New Bern, NC and the car has been in
North Carolina ever since.

Aesthetically, the car is in great shape. Being a 'North Carolina native'
the car has no rust whatsoever. The paint is original and in great shape for
its age. The interior is in overall great shape, with the only exception
being the cracks in the leather on the bottom front seat cushions. The dash
has no cracks in it whatsoever; likewise for the Zebrano wood trim, all of
which is in great condition for its age.

Unfortunately in February of 2005, the car was involved in a low speed,
parking lot accident. The only damaged parts were the passenger side
headlight, front bumper, and front passenger side fender. There was
absolutely NO damage to the hood, unibody, suspension or anything inside the
engine compartment. The car was fixed immediately following the accident
with OEM and NOS parts only. This was also my 'golden opportunity' to
retrofit the car with original Bosch European headlights (with working city
lights).

As far as maintenance is concerned, only Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15W-40 has
been used. The coolant, air filter, transmission filter, main fuel filter,
inline fuel filter, brake fluid, power steering fluid, power steering filter
have all been changed at regular intervals using German products and
lubricants when available. This includes exclusive use of Mercedes, Knecht,
Mann and Heingst products.

Regarding the mechanical qualities of the car, the car has an overall tight,
solid feel; rare in a W126 with such mileage. The engine is a strong 603
motor with no problems at all. No need to worry about the infamous OM603.961
cylinder head problem; the cylinder head was replaced with a newer stamped
version purchased from Potomac German Auto. Of course, the trap oxidizer was
long gone before I purchased the car. The engine and IP are leak-free thanks
to new seals. The transmission is in great shape, shifts flawlessly and is
leak-free. The suspension makes for a great ride, as a majority of its
components were replaced before I bought the car.

Everything inside and out of the car is functioning properly. The following
items were recently replaced:

-New thermostat
-New coolant reservoir cap
-6 new glow plugs
-New IP seals
-New ABS wheel sensors (right and left)
-New Michelin MXV-4 tires all around

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me off list and I will
be happy to answer them. I will try to provide pictures as soon as possible.

Regards,

Tarek Elshenawy

I have been trying to get through to this site, but my messages keep coming
back as unable to deliver...

Anyways, I test drove an 87 300SDL yesterday... I was quite dissappointed
at the total lack of throttle response, extreme sluggishness. This car had
no power at all, to the point of being dangerous... this car would not be
able to get out of it's own way in case of an accident.

I am quite familiar with MB diesels... I have had 2 123 body style 300D's
and I currently have an 87 300D that the timing chain broke... so... I'm
searching for another MB diesel.

Are the SDL's that sluggish? I knew that they weren't as quick as the 300D,
but I thought they were only slightly less powered? Was there something
wrong with the car I drove? If this is a representation of the 300SDL, then
I will stick with the 300D.

Actually, he's referring to Goose Creek Auto Werks in Indian Trail. I
usually make a trip to see what they have every time I go to the Ducati
dealership on 74. I brought them a W140 to check out a few months back; they
really know their stuff down there.

I went a couple of weeks ago when I was in Monroe for a meeting, but they
really had nothing. He wants almost $3k for a shitty 280SE 4.5, everything
else was of the W210 variety mostly. He has a few nice parts cars out back.

It's funny Rusty called it Brothers Foreign Car, because the Plowman
brothers used to both run the shop... I think they went their separate ways
and the brother supposedly owns Auto Verks, Inc. on Commonwealth Ave. in
Charlotte. It seems Scott Plowman (Goose Creek) runs a tighter ship though,
as his brother Max Plowman (Auto Verks) employees crackhead mechanics by the
name of P-Wee.

Was in NC last weekend for a family event. I noticed that there was a
used car dealer who seemed to be specialized in Mercedes. He had cars
of all eras back to at least the mid '60s on his lot. The place is on
US-74 near Matthews, I think the actual town is Indian Trail, but
might be wrong about that. It's near the Dale Jarrett Ford
 dealership.

Anyone know of this place? We were on the way out of town, running
really behind schedule, and it was Sunday and the place was closed --
 so I did not stop.

Re: [MBZ] 124, R12 v R134

2007-07-15 Thread Tarek Elshenawy
Like I said before, in the refrigeration cycle, each element plays a vital
role in the COP (coefficient of performance). Although the expansion valve
seems like on of the less significant parts of the system when compared to
the compressor, evaporator and condenser, it plays a main role in the
refrigeration cycle.

As I'm sure you already know the compressor compresses the vapor which is
then turned completely into liquid by removal of all superheated vapor in
the condenser. From there, the liquid refrigerant travels through the
expansion valve, whereby the pressure decreases rapidly causing a sharp
decrease in temperature. During this phase of the thermodynamic cycle,
vaporization of the liquid refrigerant also occurs, resulting in a
liquid-vapor mix which is then passed through the evaporator. When the warm
air passing by the evaporator is cooled, the refrigerant (in a liquid-vapor
state) then evaporates completely into a vapor. From here, the refrigeration
cycle repeats with the compressor where the vapor refrigerant is then
compressed again and turned into liquid (after passing through the
condenser).

Although there is no physical example of an ideal or 'Carnot' cycle, the
refrigeration cycle experiences the most thermodynamic irreversibility of
any thermodynamic cycle (when compared to other power cycles). Thermodynamic
irreversibility occurs in all real thermodynamic cycles and the
refrigeration cycles experiences most of these in the compression phase of
the refrigerant. In addition, frictional losses experienced through the
elements and piping of the system can have a great impact on pressure in the
system, again resulting in slight decreases in efficiency.

What you have to understand here is that the working fluid (refrigerant) is
most effective when in liquid form. Therefore, an expansion valve not
specifically designed for the system could be vaporizing more of the liquid
refrigerant, resulting in a liquid-vapor mixture higher in vapor content.
This means less efficient cooling once the mixture reaches the evaporator.
In addition, due to the fact that the system was originally designed to use
Dichlorodifluoromethane (R12), the thermodynamic cycle could be experiencing
more thermodynamic irreversibility due to the differences in the
thermodynamic properties of both fluids.

It's been a while since my thermodynamics courses, so feel free to check me
on some of this.

cold. The 134 stock system in my 94 E420 also blows ice cold. Got me
to thinking, how did the factory get 134 to blow ice cold, but if you
convert r12 to 134, it doesnt blow as cold. So I thought the evaporator
and condensor must be different. Check the EPC and both are exactly the
same part number. Strange. Only difference is the expansion valve. I
have coverted cars before and used the 134 expansion valve and it still
didnt seem to cool as good as these factory 124's with 134. Anybody got
any idea why the factory got 134 to cool great in a 124 but if you
convert it after the fact it does not?

Re: [MBZ] 300SDL windshield

2007-06-22 Thread Tarek Elshenawy
I recently had my windshield replaced on the 300SDL. The only drawback I can
think of (other than losing the a Diamler-Benz Product sticker) is the
fact that newer windshields, although they provide the bluish tinting above
the AS1 line, do not have the same UV filtered glass as their OEM
counterpart. I guess I will find out soon enough if my flawless, crack free,
20 year old dashboard can take the heat. Pardon the pun...

If you're in Raleigh, I suggest you check you Classic Performance Auto on

Mercedes repair. I had the tranny in my 90 300E rebuilt by him over 8 years

Let us just hope that they did a good job of it. I had a Chevy tranny
rebuilt to the tune of $1200 (incl r r) and
it didn't last 50K miles before it needed it again. I don't mind paying good

[MBZ] FW: [Banned] 1987 300SDL FOR SALE

2006-12-05 Thread Tarek Elshenawy
In addition to the information provided, I wanted to disclose an issue that
came up when a gentleman recently came to look at the car.

About 4 months ago, the antilock warning light came on while I was driving
the car around town. This occurred shortly after I had a new set brake pads
installed on the front and rear of the car. After that time, the light never
came on again, minus the 'test' illumination when starting the car.

I brought this to the attention of my mechanic, who gave the diagnosis of a
dirty or malfunctioning ABS wheel sensor. This diagnosis is based on the
fact that when starting the car, the ABS light illuminates during the test
and then goes out as it should. If the ABS control unit was the cause of the
warning light illumination, it would stay on the entire time after the
'test' period when starting the car.

In the event of a dirty or malfunctioning wheel sensor, the light will
illuminate during the test and go out as it should; however, during the
course of a drive, the light may illuminate to convey the message of a wheel
sensor failure. This would indicate an ABS unit failure only if after such
an event and after restarting the car, the light stays on indefinitely. This
however is not the case with my car, as the ABS light only illuminates
during the test period during the starting of the car.

Due to my busy schedule and the fact that the light never came on again, I
was waiting until I had time in my schedule to have the sensor cleaned and
checked. The mechanic at Classic Performance Auto has an ABS wheel sensor
tester, but said the sporadic ABS warning light illumination was most likely
due to a dirty contact surface on the sensor, a result of brake dust
contamination during the brake pad change.

As to my surprise, the light came on for the second time while driving when
a gentleman came to look at the car. I am disclosing this as I do not want
to appear to be hiding anything from any potential buyer and I want it to be
known that the ABS light is definitely not a result of a faulty ABS control
unit (which we all know is $$$ to replace).

Tarek Elshenawy

Re: [MBZ] 1987 300SDL PICTURES

2006-12-05 Thread Tarek Elshenawy
First, the car is not a grey market car. The paint and interior codes, which
I included in the original post, are as follows:

Paint Code: 623 [Light Ivory]
Interior Code: 273 [Brazil]

You are correct in that the color combination, especially the leather Brazil
interior is rare. I am unsure as to whether Mercedes even made this color in
MB-Tex. Perhaps this contributes to the color's rareness.

The radio, satellite radio, subwoofer and cell phone cradle are not
permanent installations. I left it this way to ensure a hassle free removal
from the car. This not only includes the mounting of the components, but the
wiring as well. I was as unobtrusive as possible when wiring all of the
components and none of the wiring is linked to any factory source.

Furthermore, the original radio wiring harness is still intact, including
the factory mounted fader switch. If the car is sold, the original Becker
Grand Prix radio will be installed back into the car. The trunk mounted
subwoofer is powered from an independent link wired directly to the battery.
The cell phone cradle is simply a charger, with a cigarette power adapter.
The satellite radio also is powered similarly, with the only wired
connection being the trunk mounted antenna.

In short, none of those components will be sold with the car and none of the
factory wiring was involved in the installation process.

Tarek - what are the paint and interior codes for that SDL? It kind of
looks to me like it may be a gray market (Euro car, as the interior color
seems to be rare).
I have a standard US '83SD, polar white (737) with light tan/palomino (254)
leather, which is fairly common. But it sure would be nice to have that
extra cylinder and 4 more inches or rear seat leg room
I also see a few mods, like radio, phone, audio, antennas. How much
effort/$$ do you think it would take to put it back in original condition?

routinely wash and wax it with the Mother's brand three step
waxing system. This treatment is accompanied by an occasional clay bar
application, keeping the paint in impeccable shape. The interior is in
overall great shape, with the only exception being the one and only crack in
the leather located on the driver's seat. Otherwise, the leather seats in
the car are soft and pliable due to routine cleaning and conditioning using
Lexol brand products (Leatherique is still a little to expensive for me!).
All vinyl surfaces in the car are cared for with Lexol's Vinylex, as any
Mercedes enthusiast knows never to use ArmorAll on their baby. The dash has
no cracks in it whatsoever; likewise for the Zebrano wood trim, all of which
is in perfect condition with vibrant, un-faded color.

Everything inside and out of the car is functioning properly. All of the
instruments and gadgets inside the car work flawlessly and look great, right
down to the vibrant orange, un-faded gauge needles. The sunroof and antenna
mast work perfectly; recently lubricated with Mercedes sunroof grease and
Hirschmann cleaning pad, respectively. The air conditioning (retrofitted to
R-134a) works perfectly in the blazing North Carolina heat and humidity and
the heat works great on the car as well. The car has been retrofitted with
original Bosch European headlights (with working city lights) and every
single exterior light bulb has been replaced with German wattage bulbs; the
latter of which ensures the functioning cruise control to perform
flawlessly. The car has an overall tight, solid feel; rare in a W126 with
such mileage. In addition, 4 Brand new Michelin MXV-4 Plus tires wrap the
decent condition 15-hole alloy wheels.

Bottom line is I am a Mercedes enthusiast, just like you. I took care of
this car just like an enthusiast would; making sure anything and everything
was done right and in typical Mercedes enthusiast fashion. Everything I
could think of is disclosed here (obviously!); however if you have any
questions, please feel free to email me off list and I will be happy to
answer them. I will try to provide pictures as soon as possible.

Around February of 2005, the car was involved in a low speed accident in a
shopping center. The Mazda MPV, driven by an underinsured Mexican immigrant,
struck the front passenger side of the car at roughly 15MPH. All of the
resulting damage was localized to the section before the front tire on the
passenger side. The SDL sustained minimal damage, with no damage to the
inside of the engine compartment, hood or uni-body. Damaged parts included
the passenger side headlight, front bumper, and front passenger side fender.
With all of the parts assessed at dealer prices and labor rates estimated at
top dollar, the car was deemed a loss by the insurance company. The car was
fixed immediately following the accident and has performed flawlessly ever
since.

As far as maintenance is concerned, every oil change has been done in 3000
mile intervals and only Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15W-40 has been used (with
no snake oil additives). The coolant, air filter, transmission filter, main
fuel filter, inline fuel filter, brake fluid, power steering fluid, power
steering filter have all been changed at regular intervals using German
products and lubricants when available. This includes exclusive use of
Mercedes, Knecht, Mann and Heingst products.

The following maintenance tasks have been performed recently: fuel filter
change (main and inline), transmission filter change and fill, power
steering filter change and fill (with ATF as specified in the book), brake
system flush and bleeding, new thermostat, coolant flush and fill, 6 new
glow plugs.

As far as the mechanical qualities of the car, the engine is a solid
performing 603 motor with no problems at all. The EGR valve has been blocked
by a custom made metal plate and both ARV valves have been disconnected from
the vacuum circuit using a Mercedes 2-way vacuum fitting; a common
performance modification among Mercedes diesel enthusiasts. Of course, the
trap oxidizer was long gone before I purchased the car. The engine uses no
oil as the oil level stays the same for the duration 3000 miles. The engine
leaks no oil except a slight seepage of oil from the bottom seal of the
injection pump.

The transmission is in great shape and shifts flawlessly. The transmission
does not leak any fluid and the filter has been changed at regular
intervals. The kick down switch function works perfect as well

in the new Blu-Ray format for true 1080p resolution. You can see for

Keep in mind that most of the Playstation consoles currently on eBay

60% of which have no Playstation to back the ticket. All of the Gamespot

on eBay for around $4,000 are simply rain checks for units being released

I don't trust any of the folks on _that_ list to identify the car.

Hey Zoltan,
I've had wet (like from dew) Maple leaves sit on my car for a day or 2
and a stain has been left. The only way I can get them off is with wax - so

if you've tried it and wax didn't help - perhaps my stains aren't as
aggresive as yours.

One other things to try - very carefully - is some stuff called Scratch
X by Meguires/ It's meant for light scratchs, swirls as well as oxidation
and blemishes. But be cautious and go slowly because it'll remove the clear

coat - especially if you use a power machine. Of course, there are many less

aggressive rubbing compounds available.

Good luck -

Has anyone had a maple tree drop its various droppings on their automobile
 and had serious stains result?

There are rust-colored stains on my light blue paint. I've tried several
cleaners and such and the stains don't want to budge much. I'm wondering
 if
this is acutally rust somehow being caused by the droppings or if the
 color
 is coincidental.

Would love to know how to get this stuff off my paint so I can say lesson
learned and place a cover over the thing from now forward.

I plan on adding 4 Infinity Kappa 4x6 plate speakers to my SDL. I hear the
front two will need some Dremel trimming, but I'll deal with that later.
Hopefully this will aid my Infinity Kappa Perfect 12 subwoofer and complete
the sound I'm looking for (Dylan sounds amazing with bass).

From my receiver (Blaupunkt Miami CD72) I would like to put in a 2x120 Watt
amplifier and keep the factory fader switch to avoid rewiring the speakers.
The million dollar question: Will the fader switch handle the increased
power?

Tarek

P.S. The Blaupunkt America SR04 SIRIUS satellite unit is a complete piece of
shit. Blaupunkt made good on it though and bought it back from me for what I
paid for it. Hopefully the SIRIUS s50 will be better.

[MBZ] W140

2006-05-11 Thread Tarek Elshenawy
So I know I've seen stuff on the lists about these things having problems,
but never paid attention because I thought ownership was out of the
question. I recently came across a fine specimen, however and wish to be
enlightened about general maintenance and common problems.

The car is a 1995 S420. I remember reading about wiring harness problems...
is this all wiring harnesses? I recall reading an article about how the
wiring for the AC compressor was too short, but starting in 95, they
corrected the problem. Did Mercedes address all wiring problems starting in
95?

My second question is regarding the chassis. Does the 95 S420V designation
constitute an extended wheelbase? I know they made short and long wheelbase
S320's, but were all S420, 500 and 600's the long wheelbase versions?

I also remember reading that the major downfall of all the gasoline W140
models was the transmission. Is this true?

In short, I would just like any information regarding the common problems
and general maintenance for the W140, specifically the S420 if possible.

Thanks in advance.

[MBZ] 87 300SDL

Re: [MBZ] 87 300SDL

2006-03-17 Thread Tarek Elshenawy
See whats funny is one day the antilock light came on. Now when I left the
car with my mechanic, the relay was change due to suspicion stemming from
the car running so rough, etc. So the relay is changed but the antilock
light will still come on every now and then. It lights up and goes out fine
on startup, but randomly during the course of my drive the light will come
on. Once the car is turned off and restarted, the light goes out again.

The car seems to be running a lot better now that the relay was changed, but
occasionally the antilock light still comes on. What could be the problem
besides the relay? The alternator?

If the socket for the relay was dirty it could still be the OVP
system acting up. Or a number of other things, of course! If
the OVP trips it blows the fuse (standard crowbar overvoltage
protection mechanism), so your alternator is not doing that.

Was that cheap one on ebay. Engine runs GREAT. Not sure about the
tranny. Tried to go in reverse, and can get it moving forward after a
while. Going to change the filter etc and see what happens. Body is
trashed. Belonged to a college kid. When I popped open the truck I was
stunned. The pane behind the fuel tank was filled with probably 2 grand
worth of equalizers, crossovers etc. They had nice speakers mounted in
each the front doors(ruined door panels though). Then I looked up the
front seats and noticed there were HUGE 12 woofers installed under each
from seat. Holy cow, never seen anything like that before.

RE: [MBZ] wtf???

2005-07-14 Thread Tarek Elshenawy
The best part about this is that having a hot engine bay is beneficial to
the engine. Anyone who has taken thermodynamics and heat transfer would know
that the hotter an engine runs, the more efficient it is. The only think you
would want to be cold is the air going into the engine because it is more
dense. The whole idea behind this is silly...

For those of you that don't know, I have started an FTP server which serves
over 30GB of Mercedes related content. CD manuals, technical information,
even Mercedes related multimedia content can be found there. This server is
a collection of items gathered over the years of being on Banned, Club and
Diesel lists. I want everyone to know that this server is open to anyone and
everyone. Perhaps Striplin will put a link in the list serv footer so this
information is easily accessible to everyone.

The user name is Diesel and the password is diesel. The host address is
telshena.dyndns.org. You can visit via web browser by going to
ftp://Diesel:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Please make sure of the following: if you are using an FTP client software,
disable passive FTP transfers. If you are using a web browser such as IE,
make sure you have 'folder view enabled for FTP' sites checked and 'use
passive FTP' unchecked in the advanced tab of the internet options.

I know there has been an issue in the past with me not allowing passive FTP
transfers. FYI, this server is behind a NAT firewall and still functions
fully without the use of passive FTP transfers. I understand your pain if
you are a user behind a firewall, however there are other options besides
passive transfers which will still allow you to connect to my server. My
suggestion to those of you in this situation is to enter your firewall
software or router configuration page. Go to the section which deals with
port range forwarding and simply forward ports 20 and 21 to your local IP
address. I would be happy to provide more detailed information on how to do
this, however this information is most easily obtained from the company
website of you firewall software or router.

Thanks and happy downloading.
