I carried a Glock 19 daily for many years, and this is the first I'm
hearing of a self-firing one. The only "failure" I'm aware of is the
tendency to go full auto. That happened at the range once. But even then
it was easy to control.

If a trigger catches on any weapon it may fire. Even a pocket pistol
requires a holster to be safe.

I bought one from Costco. I was impressed with the ball bearings, but it
was missing a key. I negotiated a discount because of the key. The plus
was that the company (Gladiator?) was part of Whirlpool, so they sent me a
free key. The minus is that the thickness of the sheet metal is mostly
paint, so dings easily.

I also have an old Craftsman that I found cheap on CL. Good Stuff.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Wood stove

2022-08-27 Thread greg via Mercedes
That being said, I have a traditional style "airtight" stove, IIRC it is
"Earth Stove" brand. It utilizes convection vents on either side, and is
fully lined with firebrick. My home is around 2,700 sq. ft. and has a heat
pump, but I run the stove to supplement the heat during sub-freezing
temps. One time I had forgotten to set the heat pump to heat only, and
when I ran the woodstove the A/C kicked on.

Yes, the glass darkens quickly.

Re: [MBZ] OT doctors

2022-08-10 Thread greg via Mercedes
I think if that were my dr. I would fire him.

My further thoughts: it's a localized supply/demand issue. I have a really
good internist and a super cardiologist. I am sure either one could earn
much more in NY or BOS. The internist's wife is also an MD and they each
work 3 days. The cardio is a triathlete and I'm guessing enjoys the
outdoor opportunities in the PNW. I never have trouble getting my
appointments or meds. My D-I-L on the coast has all sorts of trouble.
She's told her scrips are ready then they don't have any when she arrives.

WRT socialized medicine: I lived in BC for 5 years and paid for (heavily
subsidized) BC Med. It was fine because I retained my US health insurance
and could easily use US services if needed. BC med actually pays for
flights into the US for some emergency services not available there, and
many Canadians pay in the US so they don't have to wait many months for
some procedures. I doubt that anyone who lived under socialized medicine
would want it in the US.

Re: [MBZ] Comfort Level with Older Tires

2022-08-09 Thread greg via Mercedes
I would say that climate conditions are a critical factor. Heat and UV are
the primary enemies. I would think a truck stored outdoors in AZ would age
tires much faster than here in the PNW.

I would certainly inspect closely for signs of heat/sunlight damage.

Re: [MBZ] OT: anyone using an under-counter water filter?

2022-05-29 Thread greg via Mercedes
I just use the filter in the fridge for drinking water and for cooking.
Water for pasta cooking comes out of the tap. The tap water in Vancouver,
WA is pretty good, but the filtered water tastes better. When I cook
pasta, the last 1/3 of the cooking time is in the sauce, infusing the
pasta with the sauce flavor.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Unrestored 1966 AMC Rambler Ambassador 880 - $16,500

2022-05-26 Thread greg via Mercedes
Back in '69-'70 I sold cars at a VW dealer. We had some interesting used
cars come in during the time I was there: a couple of XKEs, some muscle
cars like a chevy 409, GTOs. I drove a Fleetwood Broughm for a while. But
the ONLY car I remember the used car manager getting excited about was a
Rambler Ambassador. I knew nothing about it, but remember being puzzled. I
think we lost money on the Jags, which needed brake work.

[MBZ] W163 Spare Carrier

2022-05-17 Thread greg via Mercedes
Wow!

The carrier came down pretty easily, the safety latch was easily
discovered and released. The spring loaded device holding the tire in
place separated in two when I twisted it with a lever, but reassembled ok
with a light mallet blow.

Getting the carrier back up...NOT so easy! I t slid back easily enough,
pushing forward to get it back so I could drive... NOT. Mallet blows were
laughed off. I tried a ratchet strap, no go. Left the ratchet strap
tension on and grabbed a BFH.

That did the trick.

I had looked at a couple of vids, but the only knowledge I gained from
them was that my '02 ML has no rust underneath, and that is unusual.

If you drive a 163, you will need a BFH onboard if you expect to be able
to change a flat on the road.

My belief is that there is rampant mental illness among some segments of
society. A large part of this mental illness is caused by the severe
cognitive dissonance they experience when their propagandists repeat
falsities until they believe the false is true...but their lying eyes try
to tell them the opposite.

Just my opinion, but I do have a psych degree and several decades of
observation of human behavior under extreme stress.

[MBZ] ***SPAM*** OT: Aluminum Watch

2022-03-19 Thread greg via Mercedes
I have a nice titanium eco-drive chronograph that needs a new movement
that has been waiting for me to get it done. In the meantime, I have been
wearing a nice titanium Invicta quartz chrono. Unfortunately, the crown
pulled out completely during the time change, and I am unable to set the
time. Now I have 2 nice watches needing repair.

Also, apparently I am no longer active enough to keep a self-winder going.

So I needed a cheap beater watch to tide me over while these are sent out
for repair. I came across a Timex MK1 military style quartz chrono on
Amazon for $62. It has an aluminum case. I think there was a time when
aluminum was a fairly exotic material and some watch cases were aluminum,
but they tended to wear out quickly. I like the light weight.

It looked pretty nice for $62, but it was not "Prime". But I noticed there
was one "used" for $38, and that WAS prime. The description stated that
there was damage to the NATO band; but I have a few so was not concerned.

It arrived yesterday, and (as has happened several times before) I was
unable to locate the alleged damage. Pretty nice watch!

[MBZ] WAY OT: "The Repair Shop"

2022-03-11 Thread greg via Mercedes
In a desperate attempt to avoid news media, I have been searching for more
emotionally neutral TV material. I stumbled across a British series that I
believe many of you will enjoy.

In a thatched barn in rural England a bunch of talented restorers have set
up shop to rebuild and restore peoples' old treasures and junk.

It's on Discovery. After watching a few episodes I'm hooked.

I mill my own flour with the Family Grain Mill attachment for my
commercial grade KitchenAid stand mixer. I just ordered a case of hard red
winter wheat from the LDS store, and a 25# bag of rye from Amazon. The
wheat is in cans with a 30 year shelf life. I vacuum seal the rye into
half-gallon mason jars with oxygen eater packets.

I've been doing this for many years and have found no pest problems.

Um...this is the first I've heard of this. Apparently this directive was
issued in '04, and I retired in '08 after 32 years in DOJ and DHS.

>From what I see on the 'netz, the order is about consistency of
credentials; so to be able to confirm identity from looking at
credentials.

I'm not sure how this could be done by phone.

When I was "on the job" I would sometimes ask for their boss's name, then
call the publicly available number and ask to speak to that person.

One time a manager asked me to help a female Interpol agent. My spidey
senses were tingling a little, so I told her I had never seen Interpol
creds and was curious. She was a phony!

I put a neoprene hose onto the nipple to drain directly into recycling

weeks unsuccessfully, I received TWO opportunities within 10 minutes
yesterday. I found an appointment at a county site in an inconvenient

appointment.

I get my first dose on Tues.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Here Is Why Texas Is Dark

2021-02-17 Thread greg via Mercedes
My suspicion is that the "plan" is to use solar/wind in lieu of fossil
backup, but that the fossil backup could not come online because of the
freeze. If the fossil fuel plants had been running, they would not have
frozen.

My guess is that the media and the Js are probably lying that the fossil
fuel was mainly to blame for the TX power outages. Guessing they are lying
is the safest bet, based on their past performance.

Funny that you mention cooking oil! The most recent EVOO I got from Costco
is Italian Olive Oil that has a DOP certification. The quality and flavor
is noticeably better than their previous oils. It has a distinctly
fresher, fruity, peppery flavor. I also notice that the Vinaigrette
dressing I make with it stays liquid in the fridge.

Highly recommended!

Re: [MBZ] Cars kill fish

2020-12-06 Thread greg via Mercedes

IMO there are many factors impacting salmon runs. Logging roads were
placed adjacent to creeks in order to take advantage of the relatively
level runs, multiplying the silting and polluting of the creeks. Loss of
creekside vegetation causes warming of the water, which along with the
silt and pollution decreases the O2 levels.
The defeat of the
Canadian gold mining initiative in Alaska is one bright spot in the fight
to save the salmon.

Re: [MBZ] OT anyone need a deuce-and-a-half?

2020-12-01 Thread greg via Mercedes
In my late teens I had a buddy whose dad was in some sort of vehicle
business, in which this truck was to play a role. One night we borrowed it
for a joyride. I recall him coasting it out of the driveway so we wouldn't
wake anyone.

Being a city kid at the time, I had zero driving experience on any sort of
vehicle, but that was fun.

On my ThinkPads, I just set the preference for "longest battery life" and
leave them plugged in most of the time. The batteries seem to last forever
showing 95-100% charge unless I'm using it somewhere without an outlet. I
get a couple of hours on my W530.
