It jumped time when I saw it, so the valves would have to be bent. He probably
put it back together then discovered it won’t run because of bent valves.

2024-07-22 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Air suspension can be a pain in the ass and will fail at the most inconvenient
time. But not really hard or complicated to work on. Early models will eat
timing chains and balance shafts. Beyond that not sure about later models. I
mainly deal with the diesels.

[MBZ] 617 oil pan gasket

2024-07-21 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Dropped the pan on the 617 doing the turbo oil drain. Whoever removed pan
before used rtv on it. I had a new pan gasket in stock but thing might be 15
years old. Torqued bolts to spec. Filled with oil, pan leaks badly. Tightened
them down just a bit more and leaks slowed down but still leaks. Assuming the
old gasket is too hard and old to seal. Or, perhaps someone tighten pan too
much in the past and it’s no longer flat? Anyway, do y’all put a light coating
of RTV on both sides of the gasket when installing? Or should they be dry? I
read online folks recommend a light coating but thought I would get the
consensus here for when I order a new gasket and pull the pan again.

Re: [MBZ] Local W108 in MD

2024-07-13 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
What would a reasonable amount to pay for one in decent cosmetic shape that
might need some reasonable mechanical work? I would prefer a 4.5, I think. I
have never had a 108 aside from a few parts cars. I know there is some sort of
issue with hydraulic suspension compensator something or other.

Re: [MBZ] This could be a good deal

2024-07-13 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Even if it’s not covered under warranty it’s easy to clean out. Remove it from
the car. Spray a couple of cans of engine degreaser down it and let it sit for
an hour. Flush with water. Next seal up the openings on one end and turn it up
end to end best you can. Fill it up with a solution of 1:4 muriatic acid and
water. Let sit for an hour. Flush with water and should be good to go.

get away with their pan gasket and maybe even the connector.

These coupes seem to be big money these days.  With the lowish miles and
if it is in good condition, $10k might not be too crazy of a price
especially since it is a 85. I would prefer $8k, but in reality my goal
would be $4k.

Here is what the seller replied when I asked all the requisite questions:

know, John never got to drive it.

I have driven the car from the back yard to the front yard. “

Someone said $5K would be reasonable? I'm not sure how quickly a

Never had a coupe. But I certainly don't want to latch on to

[MBZ] 98 M112 cylinder 6 not firing

2024-06-30 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Got this 98 ready for kid to drive. Did conductor plate, new tires, new water
pump. It was running fine. I drove it a couple of miles and all was well. He
started driving it to work and reported it running weird. Car had been sitting
for a couple of years so I figured fuel filter. Check engine light on for
cylinder 6 misfire. Deactivated cylinders in HHT and yes it’s 6 not firing at
all. Pulling the connector on the coil no difference. I pulled a coil off a
different car and no change. Pulled plug wire while car running and have spark.
I then pulled the plugs and they look really had with hardly any electrode
left. For testing I pulled 2 plugs out of a different car which looked a lot
better, gapped them and no change. Still 6 is not firing at all. I ran it a few
minutes and pulled one of the #6 plugs out and it does not appear wet, which
tells me there is a fuel problem there. Before I pull the entire fuel rail,
anyone ever heard of m112/113 injectors going bad?

Well it has been discussed many times. Couldn’t tell you specifics beyond
people seem to pay way beyond reasonable prices for cars there. It seems like a
crack fueled bidding frenzy.

Heck this was even a news story on the local news, interviewing dealers in the
area. It’s a big deal for sure but these dealers can do a car deal the old
fashioned way. Problem is many of the sales people and managers now days have
no idea how to do it with all the software they are used to using.

[MBZ] 617s suck

2024-06-19 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
I just worked on a 617 for the first time in probably 10-15 years. The agenda
was turbo train tube seal, valve adjustment, oil/filter change, hood release
cable. I finally got the turbo drain tube out after fighting it for 4 hours.
This is nothing short of a whore of a job. Taking apart a 642 for an oil cooler
seals job seems easier. I now remember why the 617 sucks to work on. It’s now
nearly 100 out in the shop and I’m done messing with it.

I’m really trying to be good and sell a bunch of cars before buying more, so I
would not even offer them $200 for it I don’t think.

Re: [MBZ] I stopped by Saturday to look at this -- Certified Pre-Owned 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG® GT

2024-06-17 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
In OK they do not have to charge a doc fee but if they do they have to charge
everyone. In MO the state mandates the max dealer’s can charge. They just
raised it $299 to $599 IIRC. I had a lot of dealers raise their default fees in
desking as soon as they happened. It’s pure padding for the deal basically.
Sales people do not get paid on it. There are a variety of things the sales
people don’t get paid on that the dealers make money on such as the hold back
on new cars as well as whatever the dealer pack which can be different on new
versus used. Hold back is basically bonus money paid on each unit from the
manufacturer. A typical amount is in the $4-800 range. Pack is just a number
that is added to the cost of each deal that the owner/dealer principal comes up
with. This could be anywhere from $8-1200 and is basically added to the cost of
the vehicle subtracted from the gross. This amount goes straight to the owners
pocket which also lowers the commission the dealer pays the sales person on the
deal.

Well that depends. How long was this meeting in total? Only I determine if it
was a Q or not. That is an official designation.
